How to turn off display while connected to external monitor??

I'm running my macbook into an external monitor, using wireless mouse and keyboard. I want to get full power from my graphics card so would like to know how to turn the macbook screen off while connected to the larger monitor. I have read that simply closing the lid and then waking it with the mouse will work, however wont this activate the screen as well while the lids closed? Any advice would be great!
Thanks
Phil

Hi Philip
here is the link:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300562
And it won't turn the built screen on since macbook has sensor to prevent it turn on while it closed.
Good Luck.

  • How to turn off terminal sevices spaning of multiple monitors on the fly

I have terminal services 2012 installed with all my users accessing it through rdweb.  I have span turned on so that it uses both monitors. This works great and takes care of 99% of my users.
I have a couple of users that have a requirement where they need to be ale to turn off the use of the second monitor so that they can run apps locally.  Is there a way that a user can change the setting on the fly to only use a single monitor rather
then having both used by TS so that they can have their local app up as well as their TS session?
    Please advise
    thanks
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
From your comment, it seems that your user are using multiple monitor with launching the RemoteApp program through a TS Web Access portal. If this is the case then sorry to inform you that there is no way for him\her to turn this functionality off for a particular
    client computer from client side.
But if manually pushed RDP file then client can edit the rdp file and can solve the issue and if the user doesn’t have the enough rights then administrator can also edit his .rdp file by adding “span monitors:i:0” inside the
    RDP file.

  • Photoshop window does not display unless connected to external monitor

I use a MBP connected it to an Apple Cinema Display used as an external monitor (not a dual display) when in my studio.
When I use Adobe Photoshop CS 5 without the monitor the image window does not display on the MBP. If I plug the external monitor in, the window is displayed correctly on the MBP. Photoshop is opening and "displaying" the image window offscreen. Nothing gets it back onscreen, except plugging in the external monitor.
I often use Photoshop away from my studio so this is a big problem. PShop is essentially unusable unless connected to an external monitor.
    Is this a known issue?
    Any workarounds?
    Any ideas?
There is a previous discussion on this topic from January 2012, but it remains open and unanswered. Hoping there are some new ideas. Thanks for the help.

The MacOS still thinks the second display is available and valid -- so Photoshop puts the documents on the last used display and the OS doesn't give any errors.
Once the OS notices the change in display configuration, Photoshop should go back to the main display and force images and dialogs back to the main display.
Applications rely on the OS for the display configuration, and sometimes the OS gets confused or holds onto outdated configurations a bit too long...

  • Firefox turning off display while watching Netflix in fullscreen

While watching Netflix in fullscreen the display will automatically turn off, as if due to inactivity. This was never a problem while using Chrome. I'm using Windows 7 and do have an adblock plugin running in the background. I have already tried uninstalling and re-installing Firefox.
I realise that I could turn this off completely in Windows, but I'd rather switch back to Chrome given the choice between the two.
I did a lot of googling and no one else seems to have had this problem before, so your help would be appreciated!

I've seen a monitor power button on another OEM's AIO. This is also on my wish list It's such a green thing to do. However, it may cause confusion for folks who won't remember which one is the system power button vs the monitor power button leading to a support call (my PC won't resume from Standby or stays at a black/blank screen). I'm sure it can be designed/already designed by someone/somewhere
For the time being, how do you feel about either
    1.  Creating a shortcut to the blank screensaver (C:\Windows\System32\scrnsave.scr) on the desktop and clicking on that to invoke this immediately
    OR
    2.  setting the screensaver to "Blank" and set it for 1 minute
    before you go to bed?
And there's the 3rd option: Just drape a black cover over the screen/unit, but keep the PC's vents unobstructed.

  • Why does my macbook pro 13'' mid 2010 screen turns gray and freezes while connected to external monitor?

Every once in a while my macbook pro just randomly instantaneously freezes and the screen turns gray and it has only done it while connected to a high res 22'' Dell external monitor (so far). Usually when this happens I'm listening to music and I noticed my music continues to play but the keyboard is totally unresponsive forcing me to manually press the start button until the computer force shut's down. Luckily I havnt lost anything yet but I hate having to restart my macbook pro that way...just want to know if its a glitch in the software or if I have a more serious hardware problem. This problem has occured maybe 4 times since I got my macbook last summer 2010 so its not too bad, im just worried cause these computers aint cheap.

    Duquan,
Macs can be picky about the RAM which they use; the “Your computer restarted because of a problem” message typically indicates a RAM problem. Since you have a Mid 2009 model, it should have 1066 MHz RAM installed rather than 1333 MHz RAM. If your RAM was mislabeled, then that might cast some doubt upon the quality control which that RAM manufacturer uses. My suggestion would be to purchase 1066 MHz RAM from a reputable manufacturer.

  • How to turn your imac into just a external monitor

Hi I was told I could use my IMAC 27" late 2009 as a external monitor for my Mac Book Pro I just got.  I bought a thunderbolt cable but it doesnt work.  Is there a command I need to use on the imac to act as a external monitor ?

Hi, not sure a TB cable works or not...
To use an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) or iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) in Target Display mode with another computer as the source:
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort on each computer. The 27-inch iMac will enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer.
Note: If you are connecting two 27-inch iMacs, connect a Mini DisplayPort cable to each computer and press Command + F2 on the 27-inch iMac keyboard that you will use as an external display.
To leave Target Display mode, press Command + F2 on the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac that is in Target Display mode. To return to Target Display mode, press Command + F2 again.

  • MBP sleep while connected to external monitor

I couldn't find the answer to this anywhere: when I have the MBP connected to an external monitor in closed lid mode, is it ok to keep my screen saver/sleep settings, i.e. it'll sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity? Will it wake up as it normally would tapping any external keyboard key?

Yes, that's fine. Once you are in clamshell mode, letting it go to sleep, then pressing a key on the external keyboard will wake it up in clamshell mode again. You won't leave clamshell mode until you disconnect the external display.
    Hope this helps...

  • HT1476 how to turn off sound while iPhone is charging?

The chirp noise is totally annoying.
I leave unread mail in my inbox and so that may be why?
Anyway, it makes more noise than any device I've ever owned, and I'm sure there's a setting I can't see to turn it off.
    But how?

I have to agree this is the most annoying thing about the iPhone.  The chirp when it charges.  I had a situation the other night where my phone was on analog roam (uses a lot of power) and ever couple of minutes it would chirp (assume it was because it found a network, charged, and then went analog and discharged and the cycle repeated!!).
The phone was next to my bed since I use it as an alarm clock.  Basically using the mute switch toatally makes the iPhone usesless as an alarm clock which is why it was next to my bed!  Apple seriously needs to fix this issue.
Dear Apple, please make the battery notification sound user selectable.  Thanks.
