How to unlock my phone and use in a diff country while still in contract
I have a very basic question and am sure many of you will also have it and might have even experienced it.
Q: I have my iPhone on contract, and I need to travel fequently to other countries. I prefer to use a local SIM (connection) whenever I am out of my home country, so I generally carry an additional phone. However, just trying to understand the way out with using my iPhone for the same and why should I be bothered to carry couple of phones always. I am not chucking the contract away and am happy to pay as usual, just that I wanna keep using iphone with different carriers in different countries.
What are the options I have? I know I have to unlock my phone, but who does it? Apple or the carrier?
Also, will unlocking my iphone once in my home country alone will ensure that I will be able to use my iphone wherever I go and use any connection?
So is it always the carrier, as I heard couple of people did it via apple in past. Just trying to be sure before upgrading to iPhone 5

i recently bought a new iphone 4s factory unlocked. in order to avoid sim failures and invalid sim errors or No service errors, Each phone has to be unlocked by connecting it to the Itunes.
Kindly follow the below steps to avoid any SIM card conflicts
iPhone FULL Unlock - How it Works:
-Connect your iphone to itunes without any network sim inside and when connected click on the iphones name.
- Click Restore install latest version of iTunes on your Pc or Mac or click check for updates
- Let itunes Backup your phone and then Flash to the Latest Version.
- Now disconnect phone and reconnect after 10 seconds.
- Now Enter another network simcard that's not the same network its locked on to
- Connect phone to iTunes with not accepted (not valid) simcard
- Wait until iTunes detects the phone
- iTunes will display (Congratulations, Your iPhone is now unlocked)
- Phone Unlocked
- just follow the instructions about activating the Iphone.

NOTE : This is the only FULL LIFE TIME UNLOCK solution for Apple iPhone as the IMEI is registered as UNLOCKED in Apple database.
This solution should be used ONLY THOSE WHO BOUGHT FACTORY UNLOCKED iPHONE 4S.
Your phone will always be unlocked even after each new update of your phone firmware !
All reasons given like bad IMEI series, manufacturing defects etc blah blah are not logical as everything was tested before every sale. -

i had brought a APPLE IPHONE4 from APPLE STORE, MANCHESTER ARNDALE. new cannon street mall.
when i was visiting for purchasing this device the sales team told me that the phone is unlocked and can use all around the world with any other network when i'm trying to use it other network it showed that NO SERVICE(at network issue) and then i made a call 2 apple customer support so the executive told me that this device has been locked with VODAFONE UK network. this was the FAKE commitment of sales team also its a CHEATING i must say that.
i'm very much disapointed and dissatiesfied with the APPLE STORE sales team...

Arndale Centre is one of the largest Malls in Europe and every vendor of iPhones is there
Apple retail in UK ONLY sell unlocked iPhones unless you opt for a contract at a reduced price
not something you can do accidently as in sim free in US

does anyone know of a way to actually tuen the phone bit off and just use the camera and video camera as to not interfere with the planes instruments i.e. no mobile phones allowed.

No one here can help you, nor can/will Apple. Only the carrier the phone is locked to can authorize the phone's official unlocking. So, have your nephew contact the carrier the phone is locked to & request that it be unlocked...that is if the carrier offers unlocking.

It's not going to happen. Even a cursory reading of the forums would have revealed this fact.
Apple can NOT help you. AT&T WILL NOT help you.
Leave your iPhone at home or in airplane mode while you're in India and buy yourself a cheap disposable phone to use while you're in India. I believe AT&T still has a program where they will put your account "on hold" while you are gone for a small fee. -
