How to use fdisk -e in terminal?

My problem is bit complicated, I will try explain this simple as possible.
It started because disk drive random eject, detail on this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13106931#13106931
Now one of my partition didn't mount. I try to fix this using disk utility -repair disk function- and disk warrior, both not succeed. Then I want to try repair it using Ubuntu live cd, but before that, some tutorial that I found in someone blog says I must disable journaling. It success at other 2 partition but the one that I need to repair wasn't return any dialog after about 2 minutes, that made me close Terminal. Disk1s2 is the problem.
My assumption after some googling, my partition table is messed up and need repairing. I found enlightenment when found tesdisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk . Summaries from what I read there, I should able repair it after run test disk to analyze then using pdisk function in terminal to restore or fix the partition.
What is this mean CHS and LBA didn't match? I assume this value is needed to be repaired.
From the explanation on that site, "use pdisk to recreate the Mac partition map using the values given by TestDisk." Then I realized my partition scheme isn't Apple Partition Map. Refer to image screenshoot #1 it written Fdiskpartitonscheme or better known as MBR. Pdisk only support APM, and so far tutorial I found only write about pdisk:
http://perrohunter.com/read/30/repair-a-mac-os-x-hfs-partition-table
CMIIW but fdisk -e, edit function probably able to insert this new values on MBR. I just don't know how to do this.
So is there anyone in that able for *helping me to understand how I could edit this value using fdisk -e?* Please don't refer me to http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/fdisk.8.html . I've read that and still confused.
If possible using step by step explanation, similar with perrohunter pdisk. I'm not really expert with CLI.
Re-format the disk is not solution.
As for now my external drive condition is:
1. Random eject still occur.
2. One partition didn't mount.
3. Diskutil failed to disable journaling. Thus make worrying if fdisk also unable to do the job. But at least I want to give a try.
4. Slow write/read speed even on detected partition.

GPT fdisk (gdisk) will automatically look at the two partition tables and if they aren't the same will offer to fix them. There's ample info on the web about gdisk's options. I wouldn't let fdisk touch a GPT partitioned disk, it's for MBR disks only.
GPT disks do include an MBR, the so-called protective MBR. This is usually configured with four partitions of OS-type codes of EF or EE, IIRC.
Mac OS only uses LBA with hard drives. Internally the hard drive maps those logical block addresses to physical sectors, it's entirely possible mismatches are normal. The drive will take "bad" sectors out of use, keeping the LBA the same, but pointing to a different physical sector from a spare set of sectors.
I haven't seen anybody use CHS or ECHS in years. Not outside of some very specialized or legacy environments. The layout of the blocks on the disk surface aren't conducive to using that model any more (as the numbers of sectors present can vary by the track), and given that most everything after the first or second generation of ATA storage allows LBA. All the low-level driver stuff now tosses block numbers at the disk controller, and the disk controller and the disk map that to the particular physical or virtual geometry and figure out where the data with that address is stored, and returns it. SSD geometry, for instance, is entirely synthetic.
As for the GPT, EFI can find and fix what it considered bogus GPTs, which royally twisted some of the OS code I was working with around online disk volume expansions, and also snarled some stuff around non-GPT aware file systems with the copy of the GPT that is located at the highest LBA addresses. (I haven't checked this with the Apple implementation of EFI, but I've met a number of versions of EFI that do (often silently) repair corrupt GPTs. The EFI folks were probably better served by not silently repairing the GPT but rather tossing some diagnostics, but that's another discussion.)
As for the OP, the fix for a corrupted disk volume structure is to get the data off of the disk (quite possibly with the brute-force dd approach, if there's no current backup), and to then reinitialize and reload the disk volume. The dd gets you a copy of whatever is out there before repairs are attempted.
And to the OP, if you want to learn about the GPT structures, go have a look at the Intel EFI site or the UEFI forum sites. The details on the GPT structures are in the EFI specifications there.

  • How to use string control as terminal window

    Hello All
    I am trying to create a terminal window in my VI and to do this i have a string control and a string indicator.
    I want the user to be able to write a command in the terminal and when hitting enter the control should update, but not before! I would
    like the user to be able to enter multiple commands without having to re-click the control with the mouse, so it has to stay in the
    control window.
    The output from this string control is input to a invoke node to an external motor controller, which replies with a string input to the string indicator.
    Tried to do some event case, but not quite sure how I am going to detect only the enter command.
    Any ideas how to preceed?
    Thanks
    Regards
    Tommy

    Yeah, in your event structure, look for an event of your string control called "key down"...on the left, there are several parameters coming up (char, vkey etc.) where you can use for example the char to look for char=13 (return).
    look here: http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361B-01/lvprop/control_key_down/

    I don't have a font called terminal in my /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/ but
    having Tamsyn there and in the fonts/local means I can use it in TTY and X.
    No that doesn't seem to work, it looks like they are a different format (PSF versus PCF).
    There is this for converting PCF to PSF: http://unix.stackexchange.com/a/21144 (courtesy of...)
    So we should need a utility to do the opposite i guess.
    As always, there are a couple of steps:
    You can use psftools to convert from .psf to .bdf, and from there to .pcf
    ...in theory, anyway
    Both tools are helpfully available

  • How to use Terminal with KeySpan USB serial adaptor cable?

    I own a KeySpan model USA-19HS to use with our MacBookPro when working on clients networking equipment that require serial communication. I have used ZTerm with excellent luck, but it costs, and is yet another application that I dont really want. I would like to know if any one out there has exacing instructions on how to use Terminal with this adaptor. If I could write a file that had, say, the couple most common settings (9600-8-n-1, 57600-8-n-1, et cetera) that I could simply click on, to open a new Terminal window with those settings, then simply close that, and open a new window (apple+n) in order to get back to a default settings terminal window. All feedback is most appreciated.
    Thanks so much, Jason Sjobeck

    Hi, Jason. Welcome to the Discussions.
    You wrote: "All feedback is most appreciated."OK.
    1. Have you considered discussing this with Keyspan Support?
    2. Have you read the section "OSX has Terminal.app - why do I need ZTerm?" on the ZTerm Home Page? That seems to explain why one needs an app like ZTerm.
    3. A quick search of Keyspan's FAQ for your product and terminal doesn't yield much more than how to find the serial ports using Terminal.
    Likewise, this Google search also yields little, and variants of that search of such weren't particularly help either.
    It appears your inquiry seems to be a somewhat esoteric topic.
    4. Apparently, ZTerm X is a bit long in the tooth and there's no Universal Binary for it. It sounds, however, like you've tried it running on your MBP under Rosetta, yes?
    5. In researching alternatives to ZTerm for you, I note the followng:• The comment from "Reverb" on this page suggests C-Kermit or Kermit as a free alternative.
    • This tip on Mac OS X Hints cites Minicom as another option.6. You may want to try your question on the Unix Discussion.
    Good luck!

    how to use IIFL trade terminal on Mac book air

    If you are referring to downloading and installing https://ttweb.indiainfoline.com/trade/Downloads.aspx it appears that is a Windows program and (only a quick look) I don't see that they offer a Mac version. To install a Windows program on a Mac you would first need to buy and install a copy of Windows (e.g. Windows 8). You would install Windows via Bootcamp Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions - Apple Support or via 3rd party software such as http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/

    I'd start here: Terminal 101.  Reading books on UNIX would be helpful too.

  • Where do I go to learn how to use Terminal?

    I need to learn how to use Terminal. I learn best via video tutorials. Wondering if Apple has anything that will help?

    Thanks to you both TeenTitan and leroydouglas.
    As a web designer I decided to make the leap to HTML5 recently and have been collecting TONS of wonderful links to help me get up and running. HTML5 is a monumental leap compared to the transition I had to make from HTML 3.2 to 4 and then from 4 to XHTML 1.0. I was greatly encouraged to find the WebDev community embracing HTML5 Boilerplate and thought life would actually be simpler even when I heard Divya Manian encourage developers to be sure to use Paul Irish's Build Script which comes with HTML5 Boilerplate. As I watched his video, I realize as a Mac user that while there may be an alternative way to work with the Build Script I may not know how to do it properly so I'd best make peace at long last with Terminal. I don't want to run the script on a site and wonder if I didn't use Build Script properly.
    If interested you can learn about HTML5 Boilerplate here.
    Here is the YouTube video I mentioned about the demo for Build Script and its use in Terminal.
    I will definitely bookmark all your links and review them soon.

  • How to use two different versions of Firefox at the same time on Snow Leopard?

    I recently upgraded to Firefox 4.0 on my 27" iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.7.
    Previously, I was using Google's "Page Speed" along with Firebug in Firefox 3.6.15 to optimize images in my web pages, and to find other areas to optimize.
    Page Speed is not yet compatible with Firefox 4.0. I wrote to Google about this some time ago -- no answer yet.
    If I run Firefox 3.6.15 in order to use Page Speed, I run into a few problems afterward when I start using Firefox 4.0 again, since they both use the same "Firefox" folder in my "Application Support" folder.
    How can I set it up so that I can have two separate "Firefox" folders in my "Application Support" folder?
    Or is there an easier way to use two different versions of Firefox simultaneously, even if one has extensions and/or plug-ins installed which are not compatible with the other version?
    Thanks for a great browser!

    Please disregard my question. I just conducted more web search and learned how to use Firefox's profile manager in order to make a separate profile for Firefox 3.6.15.
    You can find instructions on this page:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing%20profiles#os=mac&browser=fx35
    '''A small tip:'''
    If your Firefox app is named anything other than "Firefox" -- say for example "Firefox 3.6.15" -- when you follow the instructions at the above link, make sure you escape the blank space that is before the version number by adding a backward slash before it, when you type the command string in the Terminal. In other words, in that string, you should use this:
    Firefox\ 3.6.15
    I hope that helps someone.

  • How to use the pps function from JCOP?

    Hi
    I'm trying to use the pps function from JCTerminal (JCOP API: [url http://www.cs.ru.nl/~woj/jcopapi/com/ibm/jc/JCTerminal.html#pps(int, int)]pps function ) to connect my client to a virtual card with a specific protocol (T=0).
    But I always got the error: "Protocol and parameter selection not supported by this terminal!"
    I've tried to make an ATR that support both protocol : [url http://smartcard-atr.appspot.com/parse?ATR=3b909580811fc7dc]3B 90 95 80 81 1F C7 DC.
    I really don't know what value to put in the second parameter (baud rate), I've tried with 150000, which is in the range of the ATR but I'm not sure this is correct. And I could't find any example of it.
    I'm also not sure where to put the pps command, the specification say directly after a reset, so I tried this implementation:
    System.out.print("Start");
              readers = TerminalFactory.getDefault().terminals().list(State.CARD_PRESENT);
              //If no readers has a card it ends the process
              if(readers.isEmpty()){
                   System.out.println("\nNo card in the reader...");
                   return;
              System.out.println("\nReader Type: "+readers.get(0).toString());
              term = (PCSCJCTerminal)JCTerminal.getInstance("PCSC", readers.get(0).toString().substring(15));
              term.open();
              System.out.println("\nTerminal opened");
              //Getting the ATR
              atr = new ATR(term.waitForCard(2000));
              try {

              byte[] responsesend = term.send(0,cmdsend,0,cmdsend.length);
              System.out.println("Response data is:" + toHex(responsesend));
              //close terminal
              term.close();
              System.out.println("\nTerminal closed");I've got this output on the console:

    If someone know how to use this function or have any advice to help me to select a specific protocol with Jcop API, please let me know.
    If you you need any more information don't hesitate to ask.

    I'm using a virtual terminal (windows driver), and I don't see how I could turn off the Auto-pps. I've also tried with a real reader and a card and I have the same error.

    I've tried value in the range of the atr (based on this analysis: [url http://smartcard-atr.appspot.com/parse?ATR=3b909580811fc7dc]http://smartcard-atr.appspot.com/parse?ATR=3b909580811fc7dc ). But I don't know if only I value of baud-rate is possible in the range. Anyway I just would like to change the protocol, not the baud-rate.

    I've already tried to call pps function before, after the first reset, or with another reset later and I always got the same thing.
              term = (PCSCJCTerminal)JCTerminal.getInstance("PCSC", readers.get(0).toString().substring(15));
              term.open();
              System.out.println("\nTerminal opened");
              //Getting the ATR
              atr = new ATR(term.waitForCard(2000));
              System.out.println("ATR: "+toHex(atr.getBytes()));
              jcard = new JCard(term,atr,0);
              jcard.reset();
              try {
                   term.pps(JCTerminal.PROTOCOL_T0, (int)312500);
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
              }The same pps is always send after each reset...
