How to use Mac with 2 hard drives?

I have a MacBook Pro that I have been using with one hard drive for 2 years. I am about to install a second hard drive inside of the computer, and I would like to know how use my laptop with these 2 hard drives. The drives I will use will be...
60 GB SSD (primary)
OS
Applications
750 GB HDD (secondary)
iTunes library
Docs, pictures, music, movies, misc.
Everything else
Is this possible? Do I need to simply drag and drop the folders onto the hard drive that I want them in?
Thanks.
-Grant

  • I am a school administrator. I want to know if anyone knows how to use an ipad wireless hard drive as a storage device for individual student work files  that are only accessible to the student or teacher?

I need to use an ipad wireless hard drive as a storage device. I want the student to do work on the iPad , then save it securely on the hard drive, then be able to go back and get the file and continue working on it. Can this be done?

We use google apps for education with the google drive ipad app
The google drive editor is basic.   But it meets our needs.   Students go to the app called "google drive".  They logon and start a document on an iPad and then edit again using almost any device anywhere(home or school): ipad, windows7, mac, android.
We setup each student account with folders for each teacher.  Students can move documents into their teacher folder, and then the teacher can edit in real time with the studnet.   It's like a multi player editor.
There's no quick fix to allow students using ipads to save work, then revise alone or with the help of a teacher.
You could also use skydrive, dropbox, or filebrowser, but the ability of ipad apps to edit and save revisions is spotty.  It depends if that app developer has added support.  You can see your MS Word doc files with those tools, but I don't know if you can edit the DOCX file, then save back to DOCX  files.

  • How to use time capsule as hard drive and connect with existing net gear router

I have a netgear D6300 router, which i use to connect to internet - which is excellent so far for my downloads and games etc for my PS4 and hence am keen to continue using it. I bought the Airport time capsule for wireless storage, and when i set it up, I was advised on setup to connect the TC to my router, and it did what it needed to do.
Now, in order to connect to internet, i need to connect wifi to net gear router, but to access time capsule, i need to change wifi connection to my newly created wifi network with TC.
I want to use TC as a backup storage for my mac (its a 3TB TC), but also, my laptop has only 500gb hard drive which is now half full from downloads, so i want to transfer all my downloads to my TC and use it as an external hard drive, and future downloads to TC - but when i connect to wifi of TC, i can copy my folder on my mac, but not paste it to TC in finder. (the only thing in TC is an image of tmg of my macbook from first backup.).
How do i use TC as an external HD - there wasn't much difference in price of external wifi/wireless HD between non-TC and TC at 3gb, so i just thought i'd go for the airport TC option.
And is it possible to keep connected to wifi internet via net gear router, AND wifi TC - the whole point i bought it (from US shipped to australia on eBay, therefore not able to send back) was to use TC as external large HD via wifi, but keep my net gear router going.
Surely there is a way to not having to flick between wifi connections of TC and net gear internet.
When i'm connected to TC, i can't access internet, only TC.
And I don't really want to connect TC to my router via ethernet cable, as too many cables.
This can't be a difficult situation to manage, but i'm not sure how to do it.
    Thanks

And I don't really want to connect TC to my router via ethernet cable, as too many cables.
Sorry but you have very little choice.
The TC can join to a wireless network.. but it is flakey, poor, slow and highly NOT recommended way to do things.
Nevertheless if you want to give it a try .. here is the method.
How do I setup my time capsule with wireless internet?
You SHOULD, plug the TC into the Netgear and run it in bridge mode.. you set the wireless to create a wireless network.. then when you connect to the TC it will be also connected to the internet and fast.
(if you don't do that you may as well have used a USB drive plugged into the Netgear, as it would be just as good).
TC is not actually designed for mixing Time Machine backups and files.. but if you are just storing downloads that is ok.. but I strongly recommend you use a DMG or sparsebundle to prevent the TM and the data from messing each other.

  • Using Bootcamp with 2 hard drives in MBP

I'm going to install a second hard drive in my laptop. Here is what I have and what I'd like to have...
    My current setup:
    750 GB hard drive
    Partition 1- Everything Mac related
    Partition 2- Windows 7/BOOTCAMP
    The setup I'd like:
60 GB SSD- Mac OS, Mac Applications
    750 GB hard drive
Partition 1- Everything else Mac related
    Partition 2- Windows 7/BOOTCAMP
Can this be done? If bootcamp is already installed on a partition on the 750 GB hard drive, can I just pop the new SSD in, install Mac OS X, and use the previous Mac partition from my larger drive (partition 1) for Mac files? Or will I need to reinstall Windows 7 to get it to work properly with the newly installed Mac OS X?
Thanks a lot for the help!

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.
Having a sufficiently large enough backup drive doesn't prevent this problem but it can help provide a longer period of time before the problem occurs.
If this is something of concern for you then you should opt to use a different type of backup utility and a different backup strategy.

  • Using Itunes with multiple hard drives

I'm a new mac user and have a 250GB external hard drive with two FAT partitions. They appear as two individual drives to my MAC. Each partition has a lot of music. Its more that one of the partitions can hold. I can access and play songs in itunes by accesing them through the file system on the hard drives.
I saw the option to point itunes to an external hard drive in the advanced general preferences tab, but it seems to have a limitation of one location/folder. I can't seem to find a way to make itunes aware of multiple folders which could exist on multiple disk. I'm using Itunes 7.02, on MAC 10.4.8. Is there a way to do this, or is it a limitaiton of itunes?
    Joe

    Jeveland,
    Welcome to Discussions,
Although iTunes only has one 'iTunes Music folder location', the music can be stored at any location and added to the library.
The 'iTunes Music folder location' is the location where iTunes stores ripped CDs and purchased music. It does not tell iTunes where your music is stored.
The locations of your songs are stored in the 'iTunes Library' file.
Read more about the library files here.
Uncheck 'Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to the library' in Preferences>Advanced>General. Then add your music to the library.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using iPod with external Hard Drive connected to laptop

Is there a way to use the iPod video and an external hard drive connected to a Dell Latitude D600 laptop at the same time? I can use one or the other but not both. When both are connected using the usb ports on the back of the laptop, the iPod is not recognized, the message pops up saying unknown device. I do have the laptop connected to the power outlet. I have no problem using both when I am connected to the usb ports on the docking station at work, only when I have the stand alone laptop at home. I am using a 250GB Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 hard drive.
I found an article on CNet that suggested updating the bios and laptop software. I did this and still have the same issue.

You might have a drive letter conflict.
Both USB devices might be trying to use the same drive letter, and they're sort of "fighting" with eachother over who gets the letter assigned.
Try changing the drive letter of one of your devices.
You can use this article as a reference for changing the drive letter.

  • HT201250 How to use time machine external hard drive on other devices

I have an external hard drive which i usually use to back up my macbook pro via time machine but if i put pictures or songs on the external hard drive and connect it to a gaming concole or a pc nothing happens. The concole and pc doesn't recognize the device. Is there anything i can do to make it so i can access files from other devices while still using it for time machine?

The external drive is Mac formatted for Time Machine. Your gaming console and PC won't be able to read its format.
If you are determined to use it for both purposes, you can partition the drive in Disk Utility. Format the PC partition for MS-DOS or whatever is required for your gaming console. You may or may not have sufficient space for both partitions. If you do not you will have to erase your Time Machine backups.

  • How to use G4 as external hard drive?

    Hi,
I'm trying to use my G4 (AGP graphics) as an external hard drive connected to my G5 for storing audio. The G4 has a 300Gb ATA drive installed and would be perfect to put all my iTunes files on freeing up the smaller HD on the G5. Both run OS 10.3.9.
Ethernet allows me to share itunes files but not easily move them from one iTunes library to another.
I have tried slaving them via firewire but the G4 doesn't respond to starting up with the "T" key.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    memjay

    Hi Joe,
    thanks for the link.
I'm actually just trying to use my G4 as a data dump. This works over the ethernet with most files but iTunes and iPhoto are problematic, I supppose this is to prevent people from copying their entire music library to a friend, or vica versa. I would like to use just the g4, not the screen or peripherals, as the iTunes library but add to it and manage it via the g5. Any other ideas?
    thanks,

  • Newbie to MacBook needs help with using Itunes with external hard drive...

I got a MacBook yesterday. I am trying set my Itunes up but having a big problem. When I try to sync music from my external TB hard drive into Itunes, the music is apparently being copied into the laptop HD and is being synced from there, instead of straight from my TB HD. I WANT the music to sync straight from the external HD and NOT being copied in the Mac HD first and then synced like it is doing right now. I don't want to use the Mac's hard drive because I have limited HD space on my Mac and unlimited external capacity. Can anyone help me in setting this up. i've looked for answers but can't seem to find on here. Thanks for all the help. I love this Mac and this is the only real bump I've had. Thanks again.

Turn off the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is set in the iTunes -> Advanced preferences". iTunes will then just link to the tracks on the external drive rather than copying them to the internal. If you also want future imports and purchases to be saved to the external drive, change the location for the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes -> Advanced -> iTunes Music Folder location preference.
    Regards.

  • How to use the same external hard drive for OSX and XP

Hello to all. First off, thanks for all of the helpful comments that have been posted in the discussion board, they have helped me a lot with my problems and curiosities. My question has been touched on in the past, but nothing concrete so I figured I'd ask a bit more specifically.
I recently loaded Windows XP (FAT32)onto my MacBook. Everything is running smoothly, but I was just curious how I could format my external HD so that both operating systems can read it, i.e. I only have 20 GB's partitioned for Windows XP, and i'll be using it to download music and movies. I would like to be able to play these straight from my external rather than use up the disc space. Let me know if anybody can help! Thanks.

Unfortunately, Disk Utility doesn't just move everything around. It has to erase everything, and then resize. I find it a little odd, seeing as other disk utilities can resize everything just fine. Anyway, yes, you will have to erase your drive to reformat it as FAT32. What I usually do is try to copy everything from the drive to free space in the internal drives. I haven't had too much data on my drive yet, so I've been lucky so far. I don't know if you have enough free space on whatever drives you have, but that's probably the best way to do it.
    1) Transfer everything over to a folder on the internal drive
    2) Use Disk Utility to reformat the drive as FAT32
    3) Transfer everything back to the external drive

  • Satellite L350 - how to use free space on hard drive?

    Hi
Wonder if anyone can help please?
We have a Toshiba Satallite L350 with 500gb of HD. Over the past few weeks the laptop has been getting very sluggish ( carried out de frag etc which helped ) however, today I tried to add something to my laptop and was told we have no spare disc space!!!
On looking at the computer it appears I have 2 drives ( C & D ) and the C drive is almost full yet the D drive is nearly empty!! No matter what I try I am unable to transfer anything over to the D drive so it is 'sat there' doing nothing!!! All that is showing on here is the HDD recovery from intiial setup. I never even realised that the 2 drives were there, asuming the 500gb will be used when you need it!
Can someone give me an idea on how / what I need to do to make use of this extra 250gb of HD and enable me to use the laptop to it's full potential?
    Many thanks
    Mark / Hereford / UK

    Hi
First of all the second partition (D) contains the recovery files and this is needed to create a recovery disk and to recover the notebook using HDD recovery option.
But this should be explained in user manual.
However, I dont see any reason why you should not be able to move some files like mp3, videos, or pictures to the D partition. This should be possible.
Of course its not possible to move an installed programs if you have installed such program on C partition.
In such case you would need to uninstall such software and would need to install it again on D partition.
Nevertheless you could also increase the volume of C partition by shrinking the D partition and adding the free space to C.
To do that, you need some 3rd party partitions software.
I could recommend you usage of Gparted software. its freeware and can be downloaded from internet. Google for that.
Additionally you could clean the system to get rid of some temporal stored files.
CCleaner is a good freeware tool which cleans the system.

  • How to synchronize itunes with the hard-drive's directories ?

    Hi everyone,
I'm new at iTunes and iPod.
I'm used to put all my mp3 files in the same folder. I add every weeks some new mp3 files.
How to tell to iTunes to synchronize and get the new files in the music folder ?
In the same way, i try to refresh the ide3 tags from my mp3 files.
I use Tag&Rename software. But it seems that itunes doesn't xant to see the ide3 tags modifications ?
How to tell him to refresh in its own library the newly updated tags ?
    thx for your answers

I got the same problem. The only thing which worked for me was moving with my files too, onto the harddisk.
Start/MyDocuments/rightklick on it/ change the location to your external HD and hit enter.

  • [SOLVED] Dual boot windows 7 and arch Linux with seperate hard drives

Ok so I'm stuck trying to get my computer to dual boot windows 7 and arch. They are installed on different hard drives and I have grub 2 as the boot loader. I can't find any tutorials on how to do it with seperate hard drives I know how to do it if they are on the same hard drive. Also I want windows on the "first" hard drive how do I check to see which one it considers the first?

Not from the BIOS. He would need to physically open up the computer and switch the cables between them (or add another drive).
There's no actual performance increase in changing this order. Performance increase is when you have the partitions as close to the beginning of a HDD as possible, where the platters spin faster (basic mechanics, not to be confused with CD/DVD, which are being written from the inside-out to prevent errors after extended usage), and it especially doesn't apply to SSDs whatsoever.
You may be right about that. I remember I had to do this a while back but I probably switched the cables. It also messed up the drive mapping in Windows 98 if I remember correctly.
