How to use serial instruments as a displayer or indicator

Is there any way that I can display reading from serial ports evevy other 30 seconds? Just like I get reading from DAQ board. Now I am using serial.vi, but each time I have to send command to get the updated reading. Is there any way this can be done automatically?
thanks and happy holliday.

Here is a little vi that allows you to specify your interval. It works for logging data etc.

  • How to use Extech Instruments model 407123 with Labview 7.1

I am pretty new to Labview.  With the help of this forum I was able to configure my DAQpad 6020E with my Labview 7.1.
Now I am looking at using an Extech Instruments Hot Wire Thermo-Anemometer (407123) in my experiment and running it through Labview.  Based on my research, I was led to believe that I should use the Instrument Assistant I/O and NI-Visa, but I am having a lot of difficulties.  First off, the Thermo-anemometer is wired for RS232 and I have it connected to an RS232 to USB converter, which is then plugged into my computer.  I have the driver for the converter.  When I plug the thermo-anemometer into my computer, MAX reads it as a serial port and it is listed as COM3.  MAX claims that the device is working properly.  However, when I run Labview's Instrument Assistant I/O, and tell it to read data I get a bff0015 error and it says that the device timed out.  I have tried changing the time and I still get the same error.  I am assuming this means that Labview and my device are not communicating.
I have seen some mention of instrumentation drivers, but I haven't been able to find any for my particular device.  I am assuming that is the root of my problem, and that if I had an instrument driver to run my device in Labview that it would work properly.  So here are my questions.
    1)  What do I need to take data from a third party thermo-anemometer in Labview?
    2)  Am I correct in thinking I need some sort of instrument driver?  And if so, where could I find one (I have already searched for one and did not find it)?
    3)  Is it possible and practical to take data through Labview from a DAQpad and a third party instrument at the same time?
    4)  Are there any guides or tutorials I could use that may show me how to accomplish what I'm trying to do?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I've been trying numerous things to get this to work, and I've had little luck in getting exactly what I want.  I have been able to get data from some example VI's designed for serial read, and I was able to tweak them some, but this data seems to be only able to be saved to a .txt file.  I want the data from my anemometer to be read along with the time it was read and stored in a spreadsheet.
Instrument I/O Assistant appears to have exactly what I need to do this, but I can't get it to work.  I keep getting the bff0015 error, which is that the device timed out before the operation completed.  I don't understand why it is doing this, or how to stop it, because I am able to get data from the device otherwise.  In fact, following these steps I can see the exact data I want:
    1.  Open Instrument I/O Assistant
    2.  On "Select Instrument" I select the correct port and then click "properties"
    3.  At the top corner of the window I click "Open VISA Session"
    4.  Once there, I go to the "Basic I/O" tab.  Within that tab I click the "Read" tab.
Please see attached screenshots if you want to see what I'm talking about below.
At this point I can read the data from my device.  The default count value is 1024 bits.  If I click "execute" the device is read and I can read the data in the textbox that says "buffer."  However, my device only makes one 16-bit reading every 1.6 seconds, so I have to let the device sit for some time before it can fill the buffer up with 1024 bits.  If I don't, the reading takes place, I can see all of my data in the buffer, but the "Return Count" value on the screen is something significantly less than the "Count" value.  This makes sense because the buffer did not have time to fill.  Needless to say, the "Return Value" says "bff0015" which means it would return the time-out error.
If I wait for the full time for the buffer to fill, OR if I change the "count" value to something significantly lower, say... 32 bits, the buffer "fills" much faster, the "return count" count is correct, and the "return value" reads "3FFF0006" which I assume is a standard code meaning everything went correctly.  I also notice that if I wait long enough, the buffer will continue to fill, and I can click "Execute" many times rapidly and get readings instantly.  I can tell that the program is just reading data stored in the buffer when it doesn't take a second to perform the reading, and if I continue to click "Execute" rapidly, I will eventually expend the data stored in the buffer and I will start to see the "fresh" readings again.
So here is my question.  How do I lower the expected "count" value in the actual "Instrument I/O Assistant"?  I can do it in the "Open VISA session" under properties, but the only thing I can change in the Instrument I/O Assistant is the timeout value, but even when I set the value to 5 minutes, I still get the time out error.  What else can I do?

  • How to use 'studio instruments' in Main Stage 3

    Hi,
I just bought Main Stage 3 today, and I am wondering how to select the studio instruments for example 'brass' that are files under 'patches library/audio/studio instruments/brass'. I have been through the manual, but I did not see anything.
Do I need to create a new lay out first to be able to play one of those brass instruments ?
I am able to play some instruments that are filed under  'patch library/instrument/'
Hopefully someone can answer my question.
    Thank you

What do you mean by it is not accepted?  Do you get any error message?  If so post it here.  Also tell us where did you buy the upgrade from?
The typical process to install an upgrade is to make sure you have a CD and a valid serial number for the upgrade product and also make sure the product you are upgrading from (in your case CS 5.5) is either already installed on the system or you have a serial number handy to enter when you are asked to enter while you are installing the new product.  Apart from this, installation is still the same like any other products.

  • How to use Serial/Parallel Port/DAQ card of a PC to run a SPI communication?

    Hi, dear all,
I am looking for a method to send 10-bit word data to AD8403 Digital Potentiometer from PC’s Serial/Parallel Port or DAQ card.
Is it possible to implement such a communication with LabVIEW?
Are thee ready VIs for this application?

There are some vi's that should work for you for the parallel port. However it has been communicated that with windows after 98 it's a little bit more complex...
I add a llb I downloaded from this forum a while ago that should perfectly fit your need (if you get it to work :-)

  • How to use REFNUM to communicate between Tab Control Indicator panel and subVI without explicit connections?

Hi! One of my test programs needs to show many readings on the fron panel. I used a 4 page Tab Control to separate
different catagory readings and put them in the clusters. If I connect these indicator clusters to the subVI by refnum explicitly, the program runs too slow. So I am trying to make the subVI communicate with the front panel without explicite refnum connection. So far, the subVI can communicate with the clusters on the front panel but not on the Tab Controls. Is anyone can give me some ideas how to communicate/pass the data to the clustes on the
    Tab Control? Thanks,

    Hi Qian,
If I understand the question correctly; you want to know if there is some other way to access the controls on the tab control without actually using a refnum from the VI that has the controls.
To answer this question I would say that LabVIEW is a very powerful programming language and one of the very cool features is that it gives you access to all the controls on a VI into another VI without actually passing any data between them.
The best way to do this would be using VI Server. The functions that you need to call would be Open VI reference to open a reference to your VI having all the controls. Then use a combination of Invoke nodes and Property node get access to the controls on the front panel of your VI.
Do let me know if you have further questions.

  • I'm new to the LabView. How do I pass data from VI configured using Serial (CMTS using CLI commands to set Parameters ) to VI configured using GPIB(vector signal analyzer ) to measure such as RF frequency or power on the instrument? Thanks

I'm new to the LabView. How do I pass data from VI configured using Serial (CMTS using CLI commands to set Parameters ) to VI configured using GPIB(vector signal analyzer ) to measure such as RF frequency or power on the instrument?
I just want to set something on the front panel that will execute the Serial parameters first and then pass these settings to vector signal analyzer
    Thanks
    Phong

    You transfer data with wires.
Frankly, I'm a little confused by your question. I can't think of any reason why you would want to pass serial parameters (i.e. baud rate, parity) to a GPIB instrument. Please explain with further detail and attach the code.

  • How to use hex delimiters in Instrument IO assistant?

I have a device on the serial port that sends packetized data delimited by 0x02 (stx in ascii). I can't figure out how to tell the instrument IO assistant to use hex delimiters. I've tried /2, /02, 0x02 but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?
    David

It is not possible specify hex delimiters in IO Assistant. Instruments that transmit ascii usually use visible characters for delimiters and binary transmissions usually do not have any delimiters. If there is no way to configure the device to switch the delimiter to a visible character or to eliminate it, then you will need to write the code to parse the data yourself.

  • How do I pragmmatically determine what comm ports my serial instruments are on?

I am building a test stand that incorporates 5 serial instruments; 2 digital loads and 3 power supplies. I can use my PC's device manager to figure out which comm port each device is on and set the VISA Resource Name so everything runs as expected. All is well at this point. The problem comes in when an instrument's USB connection is unplugged and replugged, at which point the system may renumber the port assignments; the result is that my program errors out, I have to figure out what port everything is on all over again, and change the VISA Resource Name for all of my instruments. While this is a minor annoyance for me as the developer, this would make the program unusable by the user.
While "don't ever unplug an instrument" is a sensible answer, the fact is that these things happen from time to time - like for calibration - so I want the program to work regardless of instruments being unplugged.
Is there a way to have the vi automatically identify what port each instrument is on?

I've used a USB connected barcode scanner that appears as a COM port. If it is left connected to the same USB port the COM port remains constant but if it is disconnected and then put back into a different port the COM port changes. This sounds similar to your problem so I'll share how I solved things for my application.
The scanner I use accepts commands and will respond with a known string when I send a character 'I' via the serial connection. Using this I can see if the scanner is connected to the expected COM port (default port is stored in an ini file).
If this fails I create an array of possible serial ports by trying to open COM1 and checking for an error. If this does not generate an error I add it to an array. Next I try the same with COM2, COM3 up to COM16 (for example). This gives me a list of COM ports I can open.
I then iterate through the array trying for a response and stopping either when I get the expected response and continuing with the application or if the device is not found by the time I get to the end of the array I show the appropriate error condition to the operator.
If your instruments can return some kind of ID that will allow you to identify them as mentioned in another reply then this method could be used. Your 3 power supplies and 2 digital loads would need to be able to return a unique identifier otherwise you wouldn't be able to tell them apart and I think you'd possibly run in to problems.

    Kevin,
I've used Measurement Studio - Tools for Visual Basic and Tools for Visual C++ (ActiveX component) for instrument control.
I've used both the VISA and non VISA versions and they are pretty straight forward to use for GPIB, Serial or VXI.

    Hi Jay,
Be aware that "Freeze Header Rows" and "Freeze Header Columns" apply only to rows and columns that are Header rows or Header columns. You can have up to five Header rows, Five Header Columns (and five Footer rows) on a Numbers Table.
"Header rows" is a special designation. Besides being able to be frozen, Header and Footer rows are not included in formulas referencing whole columns, making it possible to place formulas such as =SUM(B) at the top (or bottom) of column B without causing a self-reference error, These designated rows are also not included in sorts of the rows in a table.

  • How to use Terminal with KeySpan USB serial adaptor cable?

I own a KeySpan model USA-19HS to use with our MacBookPro when working on clients networking equipment that require serial communication. I have used ZTerm with excellent luck, but it costs, and is yet another application that I dont really want. I would like to know if any one out there has exacing instructions on how to use Terminal with this adaptor. If I could write a file that had, say, the couple most common settings (9600-8-n-1, 57600-8-n-1, et cetera) that I could simply click on, to open a new Terminal window with those settings, then simply close that, and open a new window (apple+n) in order to get back to a default settings terminal window. All feedback is most appreciated.
    Thanks so much, Jason Sjobeck

Hi, Jason. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "All feedback is most appreciated."OK.
    1. Have you considered discussing this with Keyspan Support?
    2. Have you read the section "OSX has Terminal.app - why do I need ZTerm?" on the ZTerm Home Page? That seems to explain why one needs an app like ZTerm.
    3. A quick search of Keyspan's FAQ for your product and terminal doesn't yield much more than how to find the serial ports using Terminal.
Likewise, this Google search also yields little, and variants of that search of such weren't particularly help either.
It appears your inquiry seems to be a somewhat esoteric topic.
    4. Apparently, ZTerm X is a bit long in the tooth and there's no Universal Binary for it. It sounds, however, like you've tried it running on your MBP under Rosetta, yes?
    5. In researching alternatives to ZTerm for you, I note the followng:• The comment from "Reverb" on this page suggests C-Kermit or Kermit as a free alternative.
    • This tip on Mac OS X Hints cites Minicom as another option.6. You may want to try your question on the Unix Discussion.
