HOWTO: get those files back from FileVault

Hi,
An update of OS X on my MacBook became unstable, and I was no longer able to get to a login screen. Panic rising ....
My files (read: my research from the past two months) were locked with FileVault. (I now would recommend against keeping FileVault on most of the time.) So when I put the MacBook in target disk mode using another Mac, I saw absolutely nothing in my home directory. Panic rising ....
I call up AppleCare, and they were very helpful and polite, but after a few hours they did not see a way around the problem. Panic maximum! Begin doomsday plan-making for life after loss of precious data.
Eventually, after about 24 hours of fretting and wishing I could have those two months of my life back, I tried the following absurdly simple instructions. For this, you need is your troubled Mac, an untroubled Mac, and a FireWire cable. (If you don't have these items, my experience is that the people at the Mac store will probably let you use theirs for at least a little while ...)
1. Startup your troubled Mac in single-user mode. (Hold command-s immediately after pressing the power on, till you see a black screen with tons of text.) This will take you into a text-y environment.
(If you are afraid of text-y environments, don't worry: things are set up so you can't do much harm unless you're really trying.)
2. Type "mount -uw /" at the prompt (without the quotation marks, of course).
3. If nothing particularly dramatic happens (e.g., it thinks for a bit and then gives you another prompt, that means there's still hope.
4. Type "cd /Users".
5. Type "ls".
6. You should see all the users, and maybe a few directories called ".username" or the like.
7. Look in your home directory for a file called "yourusername.sparseimage" ("cd yourusername"; "ls").
8. If it ain't there (and I guess it probably won't be), look in the directory called ".yourusername" ("cd ../.yourusername"; "ls"). If it's there, you are in pretty good shape.
9. If not, keep looking though all those directories till you find it. If you can't find it this way, that's probably a bad sign. Let me assume instead that you did find it, in a directory called "somewhere".
(Let me point out that if you like text-y environments, you might be inclined to try to mount the spareimage in single-user mode by piping your password in. This doesn't seem to work, and I don't really know why not.)
10. Now type "reboot". When the machine reboots, press and hold the t key till you see the floating symbol. This enters you into target disk mode. Use your FireWire cable to hook your machine up to your working Mac.
10. On your untroubled Mac, the volume for your troubled machine will be named something like "Macintosh HD 1", to distinguish it from the hard disk of the non-defunct computer. Whatever the name is, remember it! Let's call it "DefunctVolumeName".
11. Open the volume in Finder.
12. Now look to see if your directory "somewhere" shows up in Finder under "Users". If it does, great! It probably won't, though, and that's OK!
13. If you're like me, you found "yourusername.sparseimage" in a directory called ".yourusername", which Finder doesn't show you. That's because it's a secret. Whatever the name of the folder was, click on "Go" and then on "Go to Folder..."
14. In the window, type "/Volumes/DefunctVolumeName/Users/somewhere", using the information you learned from the above experiments.
15. Out of nowhere, your hidden folder appears, hopefully containing the sparseimage file you found when you were tooling around in Single-user mode.
16. Open that sparseimage file. The machine will ask you for a password, and you should type it. The machine will warn you of instability as a result of mounting that sparseimage file, but, hey, do you want your files or not?
17. Get those files off!
18. Say thanks to your favorite deity.
When you write it out this way, it doesn't look like a particularly clever trick, but this one stupefied me, the techies at the Mac Store, and the folks on AppleCare.
I hope this helps someone!!!

If you also backed up to your computer - you can restore from that backup - to retrieve the files. As far as I know- that should have no bearing on deleting them from iCloud - they should still be in that backup.
If you used iOS file sharing with your computer - and saved the files to your computer - you can retrieve them from there.
if the only place that the files were saved to was iCloud, I know of no way to get them back.

For iTunes purchased music you might be able to re-download it via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage on your computer's iTunes. For music from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs) then unless you had subscribed to iTunes Match and uploaded it to it from your computer then no, it won't be stored anywhere

  • How can I get specific files back from my Time Machine backup?

I wanted to make a fresh install on my MacBook Pro, in order to only have Java 8 instead of any older Java versions. So far so good. But now I want to get specific files/libraries from my external backup (USB):
    One Parallels Virtual Machine
    My old mail
    My iPhoto Library
I don't need any settings for these, since I can easily configure them again.
I already used the Migration Assistent to restore all apps.
How can I get specific data back from the backup without restoring all stuff that I don't want anymore?
I'm now working on a new account on the fresh system, called 'Admin'. My old account was called 'Hans' (or 'hans') and I'd like to create such an account again for all my tasks.

I'm now working on a new account on the fresh system, called 'Admin'. My old account was called 'Hans' (or 'hans') and I'd like to create such an account again for all my tasks.
You will want to add the same User account(s) which hold the data you want to restore. So you will want to add a User account of 'Hans or hans'. Check your Time Machine back up drive to see how the User account is labeled (Hans or hans). Navigate to the Users folder and see how it's labeled.
You can then use your Time Machine back up drive and navigate to the User Home folder to copy its data over (e.g. contents from Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, etc.). Repeat for other Users.

My storage was getting low on my iCloud, so I decided to delete my files from numbers and pages on my iPhone and delete the apps on my phone because i  did not really use it on my phone.  When I got to work and clicked on pages and numbers on my iPad the files were gone. • Installed new SSD. How do I get my files back from Time Machine?

Hi all, if you take the time to read my issue, thanks a lot. I appreciate any help you can offer, and sorry if anything is unclear...
The 1tb drive eventually failed on my 2009 27", quad core i7 imac. I had USB backup using time machine to an external 2 tb disk.
Repair guy took my mac to his shop, and installed a new samsung 1tb SSD.
He had trouble reinstalling from my time machine backup - so he's just installing Yosemite (I was using 10.8.x?) and giving it back to me with a fresh install of Yosemite.
When he tried to use time machine to restore my system to how it was, he started the process, and it said that it would take 13 hours, so he left it overnight.
When he returned, he found a white screen with a frozen mouse pointer. He did a hard reboot, and then could not access the drive at all - the system would not allow him to read the drive and he had to take the drive out, reformat from another mac, and then install Yosemite again.
Now he has suggested that I simply drag and drop all my folders from the USB time machine backup into my computer, and seems to think this will get things back to how they were. I'm not sure that it works like that though...I'd expect certain applications need to be installed, settings changed, permissions granted, passwords entered...that kind of thing.
Now I have a choice - whether to
    A) reinstall my applications one at a time, and then copy the data from my backup drive.
    B) manually drag and drop all the files from the most recent backup folder into the "computer" folder. (This was his suggestion)
    C) attempt some kind of migration using the Migration assistant.  (I believe this is what the guy tried- he started it off, it said "13 hours remaining) he left it running overnight, and came back to a static white screen with frozen mouse, he powered down, then when he switched it back on, the screen did not load any OS (not sure whether it had booted into some kind of BIOS, but he said it was so unresponsive that he had to remove the drive and reformat it from another computer).
    D) Try some other application for intelligently restoring my apps and data from the Time Machine backup.
To be honest, my main concern is screwing things up badly! I'm veering towards reinstalling my apps, even if it means fixing up preference settings and typing in codes etc... I would rather take a slow and steady approach rather than a "risk having to take it back to the shop/take it apart" approach.
Also, is migration different from restoring from time-machine?
Perhaps you could advise me? Many thanks

Restart the computer and hold the Command & R keys.
Thanks - I didn't know how to do that!
I did that, and it went through the steps for restoring from the time machine backup. I didn't click on "restore" just yet... My concern is that when the guy in the shop tried that, it resulted in the serious failure that required the drive to be removed and formatted from another computer.
I'm wondering what might have caused that - is it possible that the external drive had a failure, or (more likely) that the drive caddy it sits in briefly lost power or something?
Also, can you tell me if simply drag-dropping the files from the time-machine backup would result in everything returning to its initial state? Or is that (as I suspect) a bad idea?
Right now I have a fresh Yosemite install which works. I'd rather have that, and slowly restore my files and apps manually than risk getting the same result as the guy in the shop. Do you think that restoring from the restore partition is worth trying again?

  • Can you download all of your iTunes match account onto your computer?  I screwed up my iPod that had the entire library on it and the computer that had the hard copies of the files on it blew a hard drive.  I need to get the files back from iTunes Match.

Can you recover/download all of your iTunes Match account onto your computer?  I synced the iPod that I had the entire library on to a new computer and lost almost all of my music.  The old computer that had the library on it blew a hard drive and I can't sync the iPod back to the old computer.  Everything is in iTunes Match, but can I load it onto my computer, so I can get it back on my classic iPod?

If you had iTunes Match before all this happened, yes. Just log in, activate iTM and download the music. If you did not have iTunes Match prior to these incidents, no, it can not help you.
You should also be doing regular backups of your personal data to an extnal HDD. If you had a backup hue could simply restore it.

  • HT201272 It doesn't make sense if I want to re-download previous purchases it is because I no longer have the pc used at the time or it has been reformatted Somehow I lost my earlier purchases in 2006 -07-08 how can get those files back?

How can I re-download previous purchases  2006-07 if I do not have the same PC?
    Thanks

The ability to redownload past purchases is tied up to your iTunes account, not your computer. I don't know how far back in time Apple will have kept your purchase history. Presumably they now aim to keep it indefinitely but that may not have been the case in the past when you were only entitled to a single download.

  • How to get offline files back open?

How do I get my files back from being "offline" in my multitrack session? I by mistake closed a few files and now when I open them again in my media browser they still show as "offline" and cant' seem to get them back open to work with them again.  I didn't delete anytying, why are they still showing offline ifI opened up the original file I used again?

Once you've got the file(s) back into the file area with the session file, go to Clip>Link Media. Or if there are a lot of original files, Link All Media.

  • Suddenly getting "unsupported image fomat" on RAW files that have been working perfectly.  How do I fix it and can I get those images back?

I am suddenly getting "unsupported image file" for RAW images that have been working just fine.  How do I fix this and how do I get those images back?  Version 3.4.5, Canon 7D, everything up to date and no updates since files were loaded into Aperture.

Would it help to buy a separate external hard drive for Aperture?
That would be by far the best solution. And it would make the backup easier. You could include the "Aperture" drive in your Time Machine backup. With the original files stored on your Time Machine volume there is no way that Time Machine could back them up.
Use Disk Utility to format the new drive "MacOS X Extended (Journaled)".
Set the "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" flag. (select the drive in the Finder, use "File > Get Info ⌘I)
In the "Get Info" panel your drive should look like this:

  • WHAT SHOULD I DO MORE TO GET  MY FILES BACK IN THE FCP FORMAT ?

    A ROUND-ABOUT PROBLEM
RECENTLY I GRADUATED FROM. FCE AND FCE HD. I DECIDED TO INSTALL FCP 5. I HAVE POWER BOOK G4 V10.4.8, PROCESSOR 1.5 GHZ PC SDRAM WITH INTERNAL MEM 80 DISK STORAGE AND 1 GB DDR SDRAM. I ALSO HAVE AN EXTERNAL LaCIE WITH 200 CAPACITY.
IN THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING FCP, THE STUPID THING I DID WAS TO CHANGE NAME OF THE MEDIA FILE, AND THIS ACTION CAUSED ALL MY FILES GO OFFLINE. THE OPTIONS GIVEN TO ME BY THE RECONNECT FILLES TABLE BOX TO GET BACK MY FILES ARE:I TRIED TO USE BOTH BUT WITH NO SUCCESS.
I WOULD BE GRATGEFUL TO ANY ONES WHO COULD HELP ME RECOVER MY FILES WITHOUT GOING INTO THE PAIN OF CAPTURING THEM FROM TAPE.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE THE PATIENCE PLEASE READ MOR BELOW. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
WHEN I TRY I GET A WARNING WHICH SAYS:
THE FILE FORMAT OF THIS PROJECT IS FROM AN EARLIER VERSION. WOULD YOU LIKE TO UPDATE THIS PROJECT?
NOTE: ONCE SAVED, THIS FILE CANNOT BE OPENED BY PREVIOUS VERSION. TO AVOID OVERWRITING THE ORIGINAL PROJECT FILE , YOU CAN CHOOSE SAVE PROJECT AS FROM THE FILE MENU WHEN PROJECT UPDATING IS COMPLET
WHEN I SAY YES, ANOTHER BOX APPEARS: UPDATE PROJECT. IT SAYS THE FOLLOWING:
THIS PROJECT CONTAINS ONE OR MORE SEQUENCES WHICH THIS VERSION OF FINAL PRODUCT PRO CAN RENDER WITH MOTION TAP QUALITY(NAMELY SCALIBG, ROTATION, ETC). PLEASE CHOSE A SCALING QUALITY TO USE (“FASTEST” RECOMMENDED IS THE QUALITY LEVEL 4.5.
NEW QUALIT Y CHICKED INSIDE THE BOX ARE: BEST, NORMAL, FASTEST OR LINEAR . THE UNCHECKED LITTLE BOX READS: REMOVE EXISTING FILES (THIS ACTION IN NOT UNDOABLE
WHEN I PRESS OK “OFFLINE FILES” BOX APPEARS AND SAYS:
SOME OF THE MEDIA OF YOUR PROJECT REFERENCES EITHER CHANGED, MOVED, OR GONE AWAY.YOU CAN EITHER RECONNECT THESE FILES , OR CONTINUE WITH THEM BEING OFFLINE. BELOW THIS SAYS AS FOLLOWS:
FORGET FILES. BELOW THAT THERE IS AN UNCHED BOX WHICH SAYS: MEDIA FILES 69 OFFLINE
WHEN I PRESS CONNECT INSTEAD OF CONTINUE , THE RECONNECT FILLES BOX OPENS AND 69 OFFLINES FILES APPEAR. IN THIS RECONNECT FILES BOX THERE ARE 2 SECTIONS
THE 1ST SECTION HAS A LITTLE UNCHECKED SKIP FILE BOX AND ANOTHER LITTLE CHECKED BOX WHICH READS: SEARCH SINGLE LOCATION. WHEN I OPEN IT TWO OPTIONS ARE GIVEN AS FOLLOWS:
MACINTOSH HD: USERS WITH MY NAME AND DOCUMENT
LaCILE:FINAL CUT PRO DOCUMENTS; AUTO SAVE VAULT WITH THE TITLE OF MY FILE
WHEN I PRESS RECONNECT I GET THE FALLOWING PATH :
    MY NAME.>MACINTOSH HD >APTS FCT 5 >GRAY FILES
WHEN I CHANGE THE SHOW BOX TO REVEAL FILES .I GET OFFLINE
WHEN I ADD RESEACH, IT TAKES ME TO THE A CHOOSE A FOLDER WITH THE FOLLOWING PATH:
MY NAME>LACIE DISK>FINAL CUT DOCUMENT >FOLDER >GRAY FILES WHICH CANNOT BE RVEALD., AND WHICH I CANNOT CHOOSE. IT GOES ON AND ON IN A CIRCLE WITHOUT HELPING ME TO GET MY FILES IN FCP FORMQAT.
WHAT SHOULD I DO MORE TO GET MY FILES BACK IN THE FCP FORMAT WITHOUT BEING STUCK TO OFFLINE FILES FOR EVER? YOUR STEP BY STEP TO WALK ME THROUGH TO REESTABLISH MY FILES WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

    A round-about problem
I thank you all for your very kind replies. I have rewritten my issue in lower case as suggested by all of you. I hope I will be helped.
Recently, I thought I had graduated from final cut express and final cut express HD when . I decided to install final cut pro. Perhaps a wishfull thinking!
I have a power book g4 v 10.4.8, processor 1.5 ghz sdram with internal memory of 80 storage disk and 1 gb ddr sdram. I also have an external LaCie with a 200 storage capacity.
In the process of installing final cut pro, I stupidly changed the name of the media file. Maybe this action caused all my clips, video and audio, files go offline. The options given to me by the Reconnect Files Table , to get my files back, are : Single Search Location and Search.
I tried and tried both with no success. I would be grateful to any ones who might be able to help me to recover my clips without going through the pain of recapturing them from the tape. There are several tapes to be recaptured.
Now, for those of you who may have the patience, please read more below to see what I have gone through.
When I try to get to the files, I get the first warning: “The file of this project is from an earlier version. Would like to update this project?” And then it continues: “Note, once saved, this file cannot be opened by previous version. To avoid overwriting the original project file , you can choose Save Project As from the File Menue when the project updating is complete”. (It was at this point where I changed the files names formatted by the previous versions).
When I say Yes, another box appears: Update Project. It reads as follows:
“This project contains one or more sequences which this version of Final Cut Pro can render with Motion Tap (i.e. scalable, rotation, etc). Please choose a scalable quality (“fastest” recommended is the quality level 4.5. New Quality checked inside the little Box are: Best. Normal Fastest or linear." I choose Normal. The unchecked little Box reads: "Remove existing files ( this action is not undoable, it says”.
(By the way, in my project no sequences, have been set up as yet; they are all clips inside the bins with red slash in all clips).
When I press OK, “Offline Clips” Box opens and says the following:
“Some of the media of your project references either changed, moved, or gone away. You can either Reconnect these files, or Continue with them being Offline”. Below this it continues:
“Forget files.” Below that there is an unchecked box which says: “Media Files 69 Offline”.
When I press Connect instead of Continue, the Reconnect Files Box opens with 69 Offline files. In this Reconnect Files Box there are two sections’
The first section has a little unchecked Skip Files Box and another little checked Box which reads: “Search Single Location”.
When I open it, two paths are given to recover my files:
My name>LaCie> Final Cut Document>Folder>Gray files which cannot be revealed, and which I cannot open. I go on and onl ike a checken without a head in a circle without being able to get to the files off Offline.
I have the same problem with the second path: My name>Macintosh HD>FCP 5>gray files.
What should I do more to get my clip files back in the FCP format without being stuck to Offline files for ever?
I am new to this field and enjoy what I am doing. I am old, and sometime my head goes off. Your expert step by step walking me through to reestablish my file linkage with Media would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all and have a nice holiday. Faruk Sabet

  • My last computer crashed and it had all my songs and i got a new ipod how do i get those songs back

ok so my last computer crashed and it had all my songs and that day i got a new ipod how do i get those songs back thast i paid for?

If the songs are not on an iPod or a computer (didn't you have a backup of your computer files?) you are probably out of luck since you only get one download of music from the iTunes store and it is up to you to back them up.  However, the Itunes store may allow a redownload if you explain what happened.  Go to the following and select the appropriate topic to contact them.

For creating a User agent, I created one profile in Fire fox. But while i am deleting the Profile, i clicked on the button 'Delete Files'. Now i want those files. Can you please tell me from where can i get those files?
    Please revert back to
    [email protected]

Yes, the places.sqlite has been copied. I don't see any specific instructions in the "restoring to a different locaton" directions on how to open the new profile, though. Step 7 just says to paste the contents of the backed up file to the new profile (in this case, I've copied them over the default profile created when I first downloaded firefox). This overwrote the existing files. Then it says to Start Firefox. Which I did with no old bookmarks showing up. That's why I posted here - am I missing a step once I open Firefox to make it look at the new profile information?
