HP 2510p - May Need New System Board
An attempt was made to dock the notebook while the power connector was connected to the laptop.
It connected but was out of alignment with the dock. Now when power is tuned on, the front LED’s all come on, after ~ 15 seconds the disc drive LED goes out and nothing else happens. The display never comes on. Could this burn out the system board and the processor? I can get a new system board, they were shipped with one of three CPU speeds; are the CPU’s interchangeable to any of the boards or do the boards have to be replaced with same that is in the system?

Time Machine Issue with new system board.
OK MAC Fans here is an issue that I discovered with Time Machine (TM).
First I have a 17” MacBookPro that has two 1TB external HDs and a 30” monitor attached to it.
Something happened to my system and the system board had to be replaced.
The Mac was sent to TX and a new system board was put in it and the very latest OS (10.5.2) was installed on the hard drive.
The Apple store added my profile so you think everything would be good?
Wrong!
None of my applications made it through.
But I was thinking let just use Time Machine to restore them. WRONG in a way.
The first thing I did when I got home was set up TM. I pointed TM to the external HD that has all of the previous backup files and TM wanted to backup the system. During the backup I notice that TM created a new directory for the backup files.
The name of the directory was the name of my MAC. The old directory was also the name of my MAC but with the new OS software release it was stated that you could not use any special characters when naming your MAC or TM may not recognize your backup files (there is a note on this under support).
The new name is FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 the old name was Firstname Lastname’s MacBookPro 17”. TM created a new directory named FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 and this was the only files that are visible in TM.
I deleted the new directory and renamed my MAC back to the old name and TM created a NEW directory with the old name. Now there were 2 directories with the same “old” name. I can not get TM to use the old directory and display the old backup files.
I was able to drag and drop the files and applications I needed from the previous backup folders back to where I needed them to be so all is not lost but I can not restore files from TM.
Also I renamed my MAC back to FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 and TM automatically changed the name of the new directory to the new name.
I tried to drag old backup folders from the old TM directory to the new TM directory but received an error that the files can not be modified.
The only thing that I can think is that when the system board was replaced TM got confused and did not recognize it as the same system. So now I am starting my backup history all over again. The old backup files are good, the only thing is that I have to drag and drop items I want from those folders to the location I want. I can not use the old backup files in TM.
Dose any one have a magic pill (red or blue) I can take to make the old files visible in TM?I decided not to worry about the syncing my TM. I was just at the Apple store and they have decided to replace my MacBookPro. I am going to start my backups on the new system all over again. I know I can drag and drop files that I want from the old files to the new system if I want and that will be go enough.

My imac G5 was revving up quite a bit and acted like I was downloading something all the time. I thought it might just need the fans to be cleaned but I took it into the genius bar and was told that they guy "thinks" that I need a new logic board but isn't positive and would I like to look at the new imacs. ( I love looking at the new imacs but it's not in my budget). He said it would cost close to $800.00 to repair my imac. I edit video on it and it's also become the family computer. Any suggestions? Do I put the money into replacing the logic board? Do I put money into expanding the memory on my macbook pro that only has 2 gb of memory?Has it been shutting down unexpectedly?
There was a repair extension program for some of these iMacs which suffered from defective capacitors on the Logic Board and the Power Supply. It's been closed since Dec. 08, but I've heard of people appealing to Apple Customer Service anyway and getting the repairs covered. First you should open the computer and determine if the capacitors on the Logic Board are swelling or leaking at all. If so, you might be able to convince Apple to do the repairs. 1-800-275-2273. If at first you get turned down, ask to speak to a higher level rep.
Tell them how unfair you think it is that those who had the problem before the program closed were covered, and it was just your bad luck that your computer lasted a bit longer. You can also say that had you opened it up earlier, you probably would have seen the bad capacitor issue developing before the program closed. They are numerous little cylinders about 3/4 inch tall. The tops should be perfectly flat. No brownish gunk. Inspect it very carefully.You won't be able to look inside the Power Supply easily, though. If your iMac is not an iSight, it's very easy to open up. Just three screws at the bottom. Have a look here for illustrated instructions for your model. If it is an iSight, probably best not to try; a bit too complicated. Or you might just call the repair service and ask exactly why they thought it needed a new Logic Board. Did they see bad capacitors?

I replaced the system board in this T510 but I cannot update the machine type. The cursor starts to the right of the hyphen and will not move to the left, just allows me to enter 3 characters. How do I get around this? I have tried 2 different BIOS disks, the first of which is the latest dated 21 Dec 2011.

The machine type is only 3 characters. 2672-KHU: 2672 would be the model. KHU would be the type.

Zero boot capablity, tried to solve: may need new board.
Background:
A few weeks ago my comp had issues starting with flickering lights on boot. Sometimes it didnt boot at all. However, if it was already on, nothing out-of-the-ordinary happened.
i had no idea what was happening, so i just left it and after coming back later, it booted fine. This has happened about three times, and now it has refused to boot for several days.
I tested my PSU using the guidelines on the OCZ forums, and it seems to work.
Current Situation:
However, when everything is plugged in, everything refuses to start. nothing except flickering of power lights.
Even when the computer is off, the power light can flicker, so i leave it unplugged.
If anyone has any ideas about what to try next, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, I'm looking for a cheap board with these things:
socket LGA 775
1 or 2x PCI-E
(Intel & Nvidia compatability)
must be RAID configurable
I'm willing to buy used, but would definitely require a reputable dealer.

EVGA 8800 GTS 640mbI would suggest that you test the system barebone and if possible with a lower end of graphics card to see if power is really the issue first.

I've got a Compaq Presario CQ61-411WM laptop on which the touchpad & all 3 USB ports are dead. I suspect there's a problem with the system board that's causing both issues - possibly a bad (BGA) connection on the Southbridge chip? The weird thing is that the keyboard works fine.
Before I invest in a new system board, and info or advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks!Thanks. Yes, I've already tried booting from a couple different "live cd's", and still no go on the touchpad or USB ports. It's definitely a hardware issue, so I'm gonna go ahead and try a new system board.
It's an Intel-based board, so the Southbridge chip handles all the hardware I/O (USB, IRQ assignments, DMA, etc). The only thing that mystifies me is the fact that the keyboard and SATA devices work fine. Go figure...
Once I get the new board, I'll post the results here.
Hopefully I won't have any issues related to HP's infamous "System Board OOA" error messages after the board swap. -

I also had similar issue couple of months back when I was trying to access a remote URL from a Windows service when the site does not exists in the server where service resides.
You cannot access a remote url (even though it is SharePoint server and also in same network ) from server object model.
SPSite can look in the current server only. here what is happening is SPSite will look for this in the current server DB and it is not finding this errror.
So please dont use ServerObject model for accessing remote sites. You can use Client Object model for the code /requirement you have stated above.
I wasted lot of time in finding a work around to make to work. It did not. So look for other options.

Ethernet port dead- new logic board needed?
The ethernet port on my 2010 iMac 21.5" died after a storm last week, so I brought it to the Apple store to have it checked out. They said it needs a new logic board since the port is connected to it, which will cost around $700. I can't see spending that much money to fix it, anyone have an ideas on where I could sell it for parts? The guy I spoke to at the store said to give it a shot
Is your wireless still working? You could connect your Mac over Wi-Fi instead, if you still wanted to use the Mac, that is. Or use a USB Ethernet adapter. Apple sells one for $50 that was primarily for the Macbook Air, but will work with any recent mac. But if you already have Wi-Fi, then I'd try that. And if you don't have Wi-Fi, it still may be useful to try Wi-Fi first because even if the Mac's Wi-Fi doesn't work, you can still attach other computers or devices like iPads or iPhones, etc. Whereas it would be a waste to buy the USB ethernet adapter only to find out that the USB ports on your Mac were also affected by the storm.
Otherwise, as usual, you can always sell on eBay & Craigslist. -
Do I need to deactivate my CS5 Student install to install on new system?
We have a Student download of Adobe CS5 on our system and through editing HD we decided that yes, our system won't cut it for long. So we are building a powerhouse replacement.
The question is, how do we install on the new system? We downloaded a large set of zip files used to install. There was no CD involved and we don't have paperwork. It was done through my wife's university and they don't seem to know. (and yes, it was done legally and properly)
I don't see a deactivate button anywhere in the menus, but maybe I am not looking hard enough or in the right place.
We don't wantto find out that, oh boy, CS5 was great, but we can't move it over to the new system because we didn't do something we were supposed to.
Thanks.I have never deactivated, but I do know from reading before I bought (I work at a University) that the CS5 education version is exactly the same as the commercial version (except for the price and 2-step registration process) so Hunt's advice on how to deactivate should be the same
Also, making step-by-step backups during a new install or major program addition makes it easy to go back a step if something doesn't work
This backup and then restore is, of course, only to the same computer with a new drive (or the same drive as long as you don't mind writing over everything) since doing a restore to a new computer won't work due to Windows and many programs having activation information that is keyed to your hardware (which is why Windows will force you to RE-Activate if you change very much hardware)

Image runs off of a bootable CD via Linux (the Zip you download includes a program to make the bootable CD) and it reads EVERYTHING on the drive, even the hidden registration information, so everything is restored when needed... and you may restore the image to a brand new drive in case of a crash, and not have to re-install anything
Please note that I own no part of Image, and I don't get a referral fee (that is just a plain web link) but I use the program and it has saved me a LOT of trouble when I had a hard drive die... and I was able to restore everything and not have to re-install or re-activate a single program, from Windows on up -
Keys 5-9 no longer work after water damage. Do I need a new logic board?
I had the smallest amount of water on my fingers when I typed something on my keyboard and now keys 5-9 no longer work. Will I need a whole new logic board for this? I've been into two Apple stores and both say I need to book an appointment online. I've been online and tried to book in at three different Apole stores within my area and I just get 'there are no slots available' how am I supposed to get this fixed if I can't book a session to see some!?! Sort it out Apply, it's why your products cost so bl**dy much isn't it!?
thanks, but I really don't think its the logic board since I can still plug in head phones and i can hear movies, etc.
also when i don't have my magicJack plugged in to make calls they now give you a magictalk dial pad to make calls and when i plug in the headphones again i can talk through the speakers and be heard and I can hear them too. Is there something I can used to maybe pull out the connection. I think it thinks the headphones are plugged in all the time. -
I can't find the serial number for my mac after getting a new logic board on recall for my macbook pro.
You can open System Profiler and see if it contains your serial number.
Or have the computer near a previous connected Wifi or on a Ethernet cable to your router.
Reboot holding the D key down for like what would appear to be 10 minutes until Hardware Test appears on the screen.
You can run a test if you wish.
There is a pane at the top if selected will give you your new serial number.
You also can use Terminal
You can quickly retrieve any Macs serial number via the command line by using the following command string:
system_profiler |grep "r (system)"
The command results will look something like this:
$ system_profiler |grep "r (system)"
Serial Number (system): C24E1322XXXX
If that fails you can give them your MAC address which is unique to each machine and there are records at Apple with it.
Open Utilities > Terminal. Copy, paste and press enter:
For your computers Ethernet (wired) MAC address: ifconfig en0 | grep ether
For your computers Airport (wireless) MAC address: ifconfig en1 | grep ether -

Hello. I just upgraded to Lion OS X 10.7.3. I was previously running 10.5.7 which included the ENTOURAGE application. how do I retrieve needed information from this application that no longer runs on this new system?
The file you'll be looking for that has most of what you're looking for - messages, address book, etc. is the Entourage Database. The verison of Microsoft Office I run (on Lion) is Office 2008. By default the Entourage Database for this verison is at user/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity/Database. That folder (Main Identitty) also has your rules, signatures, and such. You'll have to recover this file from whatever backup you have. If you have a different version of Entourage, the file location will be a little diffferent.

If it is a retail version ,then you need to deactivate it and uninstall it as well from your old computer and then you can install it back on the new computer.
If it a subscription based software ,then you just need to deactivate it and you can operate the same on your new computer by entering in your credentials .
