  • Observation made with USB mics and Audition CC on OSX and Windows

    Hi all,
I have Audition CC installed on both my desktop (running Windows 7 pro x64) and my Macbook air (OSX Mavericks).
I noticed that when I use my USB microphone (Audio Technica AT2020) on the desktop, with latency set as low as possible, there is still a slight bit of lag when monitoring.
On the other hand, when I use the USB microphone with the Macbook Air, with i/o buffering at 32 samples [and sometimes higher], I get what seems like zero lag when monitoring.
Does this have to do with hardware or drivers differences between both machines?
    Thanks!

    Yeah.
One of the big drawbacks with most USB microphones is that most don't provide any monitoring--they rely on you using whatever is built into your computer.  (There are a few USB mics that do include monitoring but they're fairly rare.)
In most cases, this'll just be whatever sound card is installed in the computer--and the standard ones on most PCs are a 65 cent chip designed for the simplest of playback duties and Skype calls, not recording.  This would mean that the only way to monitor is for your signal to do a round trip via the computer which inevitably introduces some latency even with very low buffer settings.
Once you get to more specialist audio interfaces (even fairly basic ones) they have a feature called "direct hardware monitoring" which lets you create a monitor mix in the interface itself before the signal even goes into the computer.  I'm not a Mac user but I have to assume that the audio hardware in your Apple provides some form of direct monitoring without the "round trip".

  • USB Mic no longer works with Skype after 7.1 updat...

Using a USB headset with skype, worked with previous versions, works with other programs. I can hear people talk but they can't hear me! Skype detects the mic just fine but when I talk nobody can hear me.
I have tried updating drivers, re-installing skype, I have tried deleting my profile/preferences from the skype folder on my PC and starting from scratch, tried restarting my computer, re-installing my headset drivers, and tried restarting or re-plugging in my mic. Nothing works. Skype simply doesn't use my mic properly in the new version, previous versions did not have this problem, as I said mic works fine in all other programs.

Hi pa.elimination, Can you please reproduce the issue and provide logs as described in this link https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12321/how-do-i-create-log-files under Skype for Windows Desktop and attach it to your post?
This will help us investigate and solve the problem you are experiencing.
Can you also try with the 7.0 version to see if that version solves your issue?

  • Mic won't work with Skype on Windows installed using BootCamp Assistant?

I recently purchased a 17" MacBook Pro in Australia. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate and updates as well using BootCamp Assistant. Everything works fine in Windows except when I downloaded and logged in to Skype and video-called one of my friends.
I could see my friend and he could see me, but we couldn't hear each other. I beleive there is a problem with the built-in mic, which Windows doesn't recognize or doesn't have the driver for it installed. If it's a driver problem, can anyone tell me which specific driver to download? It'd make things so much easier!
    Please help!
    Thanks.

Did you download and install the drivers? You need to download the drivers then install them from within Windows. See the Boot Camp Installation Guide. http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf
Also search these forums for links to the audio drivers from the manufacturers's site.

  • TC 3TB Model A1409 compatibility with OS X 10.9.4

I have a TC 3TB model A1409.  I have 2 OS X 10.7.5 machines and 2 OS X 10.9.4 machines.  The 10.7.5 machines back up to the TC fine using Time Machine.  The OS X 10.9.4 have stopped working, wire or wirelessly.  All are on the same network.  What is the issue?  Will a new TC fix it?  Will a new TC work with my 10.7.5 machines?

The older Gen4 TC is perfectly fine with any OS. The problem is Mavericks network is up the creek.
Often a simple reboot will refresh everything.. or a full network restart which should be done in correct order. modem.. TC.. clients with a couple of min for each device to boot between them.
When Apple changed to Mavericks they changed from AFP to SMB as the default network protocol. This I think has led them into a world even more bug filled than in earlier OS.
Please try the following to get your Gen4 working again.
    1. Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Ensure all computers have ipv6 set to link-local only. Eg for wireless
Do the same for ethernet if you use it. IPv6 is now vital to OS to work with the TC.
    3. SMB naming rules are much tighter.. so please use new names when you go through the setup in airport utility.
    eg TC name.. TCgen4
    eg TC wireless name. TCwifi
    4. In Mavericks manually mount the TC disk in finder.
Use Go in the top menu, Connect to Server.
    type in
AFP://TCgen4.local (replace with whatever name you use, local is the default domain and will not change).
OR even better use the TC IP address. You can do this if the TC is the main router or you setup with static IP.
AFP://10.0.1.1 (that is the default IP.. replace with whatever IP your TC is on).
Store the disk password in the keychain. This should help to keep the TC running and available.. although the occasional reboot might still be necessary.

  • What usb auto switch is compatible with OSX and Windows for sharing the same printer

I just bought a new iMac for myself to replace my old Dell PC.  My husband still has his PC with Windows Vista and our work stations are set up to share the same MFC with a Belkin auto switch.   Unfortunately that software is not compatible with my OSX and I am having trouble searching for another auto switch that is compatible with both computer operating systems.  Can anyone recommend one to me?

Hmmm, we bought a brand new V300 from Epson and hooked it up it didn't work. We went through all the steps, downloaded all the drivers, and after several days of frustration, it still did not work so we returned it.
Apple hasn't been able to give us technical advice, Epson couldn't help. The only scanners sold locally are the printer/scanner combos.
I was looking at the Fujitso ScanSnap 1500M earlier tonight... am wondering if I can get by with this scanner since most of my scanning nowadays has to do with business documents. It sure would be nice to organize clutter and the text said something about compatible with the "cloud" as well.
I use my iPad all the time to show galleries & collectors the quality of my paintings... type up proposals, etc. Thanks for letting me know about it's compatibility with my iPad, iPhone and Mac.
Thank you for your input, AppleMan1958. you are wonderful.

  • How to charge your Palm Centro via 64-bit Windows, with a USB cable

Here is a way to recharge your Palm Centro on your 64-bit Windows computer, through a USB cable.  But first, a few brief explanatory notes...
Note 1:  I have successfully used this method to charge my Palm Centro from my 64-bit Windows 7 computer.  This method probably works for other Palm devices and other 64-bit Windows versions (XP and Vist)...  but I haven't tested this on any other configurations.  Others may feel free to post their successes or failures with their setups.
Note 2:  This method will NOT allow you to HotSync your Palm to the computer via USB.  All it does is let you charge your Palm via USB.  If you need to HotSync your Palm, and you have 64-bit Windows, you have to use Bluetooth or some other method.  To learn how to use Bluetooth to sync, search for "bluetooth sync 64-bit" or something like that on this forum.
Note 3:  If you're wondering why someone would need to use this method - why not just plug the phone into a wall outlet, right? - it's because the Centro's charging jack can get messed up.  Mine has not worked properly for the last several months
Note 4:  I will not be posting any follow-ups to this message.  This is my first (and only) post here...  I'm posting here because I am very grateful to this forum: It is here that I learned how (and why) to sync my Centro to my computer via Bluetooth, because Palm doesn't support 64-bit Windows. This is my way of saying "thank you"!  I'm not trying to be harsh by not following up...  it's just that I won't be checking this thread, and I don't want anyone to have bad feelings if they ask questions and I don't respond.  I'll be as thorough as I can in this one posting, though.
Note 5:  I cannot claim credit for actually discovering this solution.  I found it after HOURS of looking online... it was on some obscure website.  Unfortunately, I can't remember where I found the original solution, so I can't credit the discoverer here.  However, I have done my best to provide much more detailed instructions here.
Note 6:  Lastly, Palm should support 64-bit Windows.  Period.  Some of you may say, "It's not Palm's fault - the company that makes the Palm OS is Access, and it's Access's fault for not supporting 64-bit Windows."  Well, this may be true, but Access has stated that Palm has not requested a 64-bit driver.  (In fact, you can call Access and ask them directly.)  And if Palm doesn't ask (and pay) for it, Access sure isn't going to create one on its own.  I used to LOVE Palm devices...  I've used Palms for 12 years now, and for most of that time, I heartily recommended Palms to all my friends.  But, between this problem and the other problems I've had with my current Centro and my previous Treo, I'm done with Palm.  No more for me.
OK, here's how to charge your Palm (finally!)
    1)  If you haven't done so already, install the latest version of Palm Desktop / HotSync on your computer.  You can get this at palm.com, under the "support" section.  (Actually, I'm not sure if this is necessary, but I already had done this.)
    2)  As you're installing the software on your computer, toward the end of the process, do not actually sync your Palm to your computer.  Just cancel or whatever you have to do to avoid that step.  (Remember, the whole point here is that Palm does not have a driver compatible with 64-bit Windows, so you won't be able to sync via USB.)
    3)  If you don't already have it, get the PocketTunes application (also known as "pTunes") on your Palm device.  If you have to install the software, you may need to do so wirelessly or via a 32-bit Windows computer (because, again, Palm doesn't support 64-bit Windows).
    4)  Connect the Palm USB cable to your computer.  If you are using a desktop, plug into the USB ports on the BACK of your computer.  These ports are directly powered, whereas the ports on the front of your desktop may not be.  You'll want as much juice as possible to charge your Palm.
    5)  Connect the Palm USB cable to your Palm.
    6)  Turn on the Palm device, and open the PocketTunes application on your Palm.
    7)  PocketTunes will try to connect to Windows Media Player (on your desktop).  Tell your desktop to connect to Windows Media Player.  (You can save time by telling your desktop to do this automatically.)  When PocketTunes connects with Windows Media Player, you'll have a power connection via USB.
    8)  PocketTunes will eventually show that it is "Idle" on the Palm.
    9)  To confirm whether the Palm is charging, look for the charging light (on the Centro, it's on the upper left) to turn solid red.  You can also hit the home button on the Palm to see the battery / charging status.  To get the charging working, you may have to exit PocketTunes and come back into it a few times before the charging light comes on.  I have no idea why you have to do this; I just know what I wind up doing sometimes.  You don't have to unplug and replug the phone from the USB cable, or turn the phone off and on.  Just leave PocketTunes and come back to PocketTunes.
    10)  If you exit the PocketTunes application on the Palm, the Palm will still charge - but you'll get the constant and annoying "no driver" noise from Windows.  To avoid that sound, just keep the Palm on PocketTunes while you have the Palm plugged into the USB cable.
    11)  You can close Windows Media Player on the desktop once you have the Palm charging.
    12)  Once you have this set up properly, you can speed up the process by setting the HotSync cable button to PocketTunes - after all, that button no longer needs to be set up to HotSync via USB cable.
When you have everything set up, here's what you would be doing on a regular basis:
-- Plug USB cable (which is already plugged into your computer) into Palm
-- Hit HotSync button on cable --> This starts PocketTunes --> PocketTunes automatically opens Windows Media Player on the computer
-- See if charging light turns solid red --> If not, exit PocketTunes, then hit HotSync button on cable to start PocketTunes again
-- Repeat until charging light turns solid red (success!)
-- Once the Palm is charging, close Windows Media Player on desktop
Best of luck to all who need this!

Why do you want to create your own driver instead of what comes with the device? If you go that route, you need all of the low level USB RAW protocol from the vendor. Did you get that? Yoe are wasting your time if you don't have that. Is the driver from the vendor documented? If it's a USB connection, how does that connection show up in windows device manager?

  • Macmini 2012, Mountain Lion, Logitech C600 webcam USB Mic...

    OK.
So I got the new macmini 2012(base model). Got 10.8.2 on it and a webcam Logitech C600.
Everything works fine (no additional drivers needed). The problem comes when sometimes (randomly) the mic stops working. It is a USB mic integrated in the webcam. I am thinking it has something to do when the monitor goes to sleep, but still cannot find the reason. It sometimes happen after fresh restart. When I disconnect and reconnect the webcam it goes ok. Any ideas?

BDAqua is right Hristokirev. I solved this problem myself with this issue before. Coz I also have a C600. Also if your C600 video display resolution is crap, go to quicktime player then go to movie recording and click on high recording quality on it so you can manually adjust the resolution. So yeah when I first plug this camera it didn't had a 720p quality feature, but its just that you have to manually change the settings in it itself.

  • T60 USB Mice has random disconnect, needs to be plugged back in

We have a bunch of T60's here, and we use Lenovo USB mice with them. What happens is, at any given moment, the mouse will stop working. The user just unplugs and plugs the mouse back in (Port Rep or directly into machine). This usually works, but sometimes requires the mouse to be swapped out. Then that old mouse will work somewhere else.
It's a very weird problem, and was wondering if anyone has a solution? I did some reading up and found other people with this problem, didn't find much of a solution though.
    Any help appreciated, thanks.

Try setting usb in bios - config - usb  to always on or powered and in device manager remove the tick on usb hubs allowing windows to turn them off.

  • Kernel Panic when using Garageband with Blue Snowball USB mic

    *HI ALL,*
*I purchased Mac Pro recently about 3 weeks ago. I am on the latest updates including the recent firmware update. However whenever I use garageband with external USB mic(Blue Snowball) my Kernel Panics and OS freezes and forces me to Power On again. It happened 20 times so far in few hours.*
*I opened garageband first time today after bought this external mic from apple store. I did not use garageband without this mic plugged into USB, I only used garageband with MIC plugged in and in couple of minutes to 5 minutes of using garageband the Kernel Panic occurs. Need your help please. Here is the message I get after login again which I reported consistently to Apple. Any immediate help is appreciated. I use iMove, iPhoto and other apps without any problem. Harddisk verification went o.k.*

Seems to be a lot of crashiness with USB Audio in 10.5.2 - let's hope we see a patch soon

  • How to record a USB mic and a guitar at the same time?

I have an Audio-Technia AT-2020 USB mic and an Ovation acoustic/electric guitar. I wanted to record both of them at the same time, so i plugged the mic into the USB port (duh!) and the guitar into the 1/8" port on the computer (with a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and a male/male headphone cable). However, when i went to select the inputs for the diffrent tracks, it was either one or the other. My question is, do you need an audio interface to be able to do multitrack recording? If so, could I use a USB hub, 1/8" to USB adapter, and plug both the guitar and mic to fool the computer into thinking i have an audio interface? I would rather not spend money on an audio interface ($200) and a new mic ($120) when i already have something that could work!
Thanks to anyone who can help!

create an aggregate device from the mic and line-IN:

Aggregate devices are setup in the Audio/Midi setup of OSX Utilities, (Not in Logic). It gives you a way of having for than one audio i/o device. Once you have set up your aggregated devices in Audio/Midi, when you start Logic you will need to go into Audio preferences and choose the Aggregate device.

  • IMovie 10.0.5 crashes into millions of colored pixels when I add v/o narrative using Pages to read script from and using a USB mic attached to my iMac. I am running Mavericks OS X10.9.4

Hi, I have been editing a project for a week and over the past 2 days iMovie 10.0.5 has crashed into millions of colored pixels about 6 times. I am working on a 27" iMac running OS X 10.9.4 with 6GB of Ram, plenty of space on start up disc (217 GB's)  The crash seems to coincide with any effort to use an external USB mic plugged in to record a narrative. I can record the voice over but a few minutes later I get some awful audio scrubbing sounds and then it pixelates. Why is this happening and how can I work around this to record a voiceover please? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm nervous to continue if my work is going to ultimately be lost. My project is currently about seventeen mins and includes, video clips from 2 different cameras (both Canon) a music track from iTunes and some still images (jpegs.)

    Thanks Erik,
If nothing else, this huge list of updates and fixes, shows clearly that the Logic Dev team is working hard on fixing and improving LPX to a major degree.... and from the list of fixes done.. show they do read the bug reports submitted!
    As an aside....
I recall how all the 'naysayers' prior to LPX (and in some cases, since...)  were proclaiming how Logic was dead, the team was being disbanded, we won't see any further development, the Dev team doesn't listen or care... and so on....... I wonder where those people are now?

  • Output sound distortion when USB Mic Connected

    Hi everyone,
Really appreciate anyone’s help on this sound distortion problem.
I have been using the new 2014 iMac 27' for last 8 Months, bought Brand New, and recently updated to Yosemite. Everything worked fine including recording, until this update.
I'm using Blue Yeti USB Mic for recording, and few days after the update I was trying to record in GarageBand and the output sound (via headphone connected to USB MIc) started to distort and then suddenly dropped the bitrate/ sound and I could only hear some clicks. I reinstalled the GargeBand, still its the same distortion happens. The sound gets back to normal, only for few seconds, after I unplug the USB cable from the Mic device. And I tried changing the bit rate and again sounds starts to drop after few sec. This happens only when I connect the Blue Yeti USB Mic and sound output from the Mic itself. Same thing happens with iTunes as well. Output sound from Internal mic and speakers are working fine as normal.
I tried connecting the USB Mic to my Windows laptop and its working fine with the Cubase 5 without any problem. So the problem is with the output sound, when external Mic connected.
I don’t know the solution for this. Have checked on every single blog/ thread, sill couldn’t find the answer I’m looking for, to fix this.

Nope. The larger buffer didn't work. What did work was running a cord out of the 1/4-inch jack from the direct box to a 1/4-to-1/8-inch adapter and then into the mic/line-in jack on my computer. I set GarageBand to use the built-in line-in and had no static problems. It's a stopgap until this gets fixed.
