HP Computer Lockup

Hey,
I have a HP envy desktop pc. Everything was great and fine until now. This morning i tried to boot it and it would go through everything ( HP loading screen) but when it got to the part were It would load windows 8, it just gives me a black screen with my cursor that I can move. I have tried restarting it multiple times and have blown through all air vents. I have also removed all USBs ( I only kept in mouse and keyboard USB) and it still has the same problem! Please help!

Hello 14rshanahan,
I understand that you are not getting anything on your display when the computer boots.
Check to make sure that you only have two cables going to the back of the monitor.
One for the power and one for the display.
What you are explaining to typical of two display cables being connected.
Let me know how everything goes.

Problem: computer lockup after a while of non-use
i discovered the problem very quickly and would like to let you know that the problem lies in the “screen saver “ program that comes loaded on the Mini Mac:
i used the “SHELL” and as set after an hour it would come on , but has difficulty getting out of it once a keyboard or mouse is touched. A corrective update must be written to remedy this issue

I have never performed a backup with video files, as I don't have any.
Nevertheless, based on the way the PSE Organizer works, I am relatively certain that the tags for videos are included in the backup (as well as the tags for photos). I'm also relatively certain that both photos and videos are included in the backup. (Note: I am referring to backups made via the Organizer command File->Backup Catalog)
But the only way to know for sure is to cross your fingers and try it.
Best to start a new thread since your question has nothing to do with the original topic (will a new computer fix the problem)

  • Computer Lockup

Whenever I turn on my computer with windows, the computer just locks up at the login screen. Even with a fresh Windows install, it will still freeze.  After troubleshooting, it seems to have something to do with the burning software (Roxio AND Nero both seem to freeze the computer) and the SCSI drivers.
Is anyone else having this problem and know how to fix it?
    update*
apparently it may NOT be burning software because i have uninstalled all of them and i am still getting the lockup at the login
I do know it has SOMETHING to do with windows because it works perfectly fine under linux

the first startup works so i load the drivers - still works on the boot
then i install applications (photoshop, antivirus, etc.) - and then it stops working
awkward thing is, i had it working for a year, and then it suddenly started freezing about 2 weeks ago without any changes whatsoever.....
and i can get in SOMETIMES (about 50%) or use safemode
"the first startup works so i load the drivers - still works on the boot
then i install applications (photoshop, antivirus, etc.) - and then it stops working"
seems that happend several times you must already know the answer or almost. try rolling back(uninstall last installed app.) and see what caused it. or make new clear installation and test after each software installed. i have suspect Raxio....
also can be everythink else.. like PSU, overheating, memory problem, mistyped bios parameter causing instability and so on...

  • Computer lockups 3d games

Anyone having any problems with lockups in 3d games only?
I've been watching the board concerning the 780 and 790 chipset board problems, specifically the problems with these chipsets playing video.  I'm trying to figure out if my problem is related somehow.  I updated the bios to 1.2 in my P7N Diamond and the problem did seem to lessen, but not go away.
I'm an Oblivion fan at the moment, and the game will play fine at a 1152x864 resolution with a very rare lockup.  If I up the resolution to 1440x900 a lockup is guarenteed within a fairly short time span, anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour.  Temperature is not a problem, video card at 60 degrees max, case temperature at 45 degrees at load.  Video card(s) is/are not a problem as I have tested them both in another system.  Currently only running a single video card.  Power supply runs fine in a second box.  Memory tests fine using Memtest.  Before the bios upgrade even this resolution didn't run well.
I'm thinking a beta bios?  Any opinions?  Specific hardware should be in my signature.

Still getting locks in 3d games.  If I'm quick, as soon as the game locks up, I can ctrl alt del to Task Manager and kill the game off to get back to Windows.  If I wait more than a few seconds, it will lock the whole computer up.  Windows is solid, or at least, I haven't experienced any problems with simple Internet browsing, email, and the like.
Initially I set up 5-5-5-15 at 2.1 volts but left it at the Auto setting of 800Mhz.  I've just tried 5-5-5-18 at 800Mhz and it lasted a little longer.  Would setting this to 'Manual' but leaving it unchanged of 800 have any affect?
To verify I am setting the proper parameters in BIOS, these are my current timings.  Cas Latency (CL) 5, tRCD 5, tRP 5, tRAS 15 (18), tRRD 5, Memory Timing 2T.  All other settings are set to 'Auto'.
Any advice would be welcome.   I'm out of things to try really.

  • Network connection loss/Computer lockups

    Hi,
This is the setup i have:
Cable modem -> Airport Dual Band II -> Netgear gigabit switch which has multiple computers, VoIP phone, Apple TV and a 2nd Airport acting as a repeater.
My computer locks up or freezes randomly and I am trying to see where the issue can be, the netgear switch or the airport connected to the cable modem. Has any one experienced similar issues?
would it be better if I plugged the modem into the netgear and then plug everything else in to that switch instead?
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussions!
    Questions and a comment.
The 2nd Airport acting as a "repeater"...is this plugged into the Netgear ethernet switch, or is the device extending your network using wireless?
Is the 2nd Airport being used for wireless only? Which device is this?
+would it be better if I plugged the modem into the netgear and then plug everything else in to that switch instead+
No, that won't work. Your router must be the device connected to the modem with the switch coming after the router.

  • Computer Lockups

Ok well I can't quite figure out whats making my compute lock up. Now I'm running Ubuntu Linux and I've installed the lastest drivers (100.14.11) and it does it in any OS I install. I have Kubuntu installed also as a back up. Now I'm thinking its my video card but I don't have another video card to test it out with. So is there anyway I can test the card? Also I've looked into getting a new card I'm stuck between two cards.  One is a MSI 8600GTS and the other is a MSI X2600XT

Can you help me out. i don't know which one is better or not. I know the GDDR4 is going to be a big thing and the 512 is going to be another one. I'm just looking for something powerful enough to run any of the games out there with some good nut for under $200.

I don't know if it locks up under windows as I don't run windows. Its never locked up before under linux though. I'll try to ping it from another computer. I don't know SSh is?
BTW which card is better? Just so I can order one when I get the money.

  • T23 Screen and computer lockup

Have a T23 and after a while the screen locks up and fades away, but nothing works.Turned unit on side with only power cord, and it seem to run longer before it crashed. If I put it in normal position it crashed immediately, but on the side with dvd down it worked longer.        I removed all the FRUS and reinstalled one at a time, but could not isolate the problem to a particular FRU.  I noticed when I could see the fan that it started at startup but after a while was stopped.   It can be replaced but is it supposed to run all the time cooling the system or does it start and stop.   I do have a two fan chill pad underneath but even that and an external fan blowing on the corner with the chip does not seem to help.
    Any advice?

To address your last statement first... the fan operation you describe at power up is normal. It should start spinning when the system is turned on and then stop within 15 seconds or so. If the T23 runs longer with the fan exhaust port up (Ultrabay side down), that could imply that cooling efficiency is the remedy, but it could also be that it relives stress on the motherboard in that position. My guess would be that there's an intermittent connection somewhere in the motherboard.
When you say that the system "crashes", does that mean that you only lose the video or does the system actually power down?

  • Bad keyboard causing random lockups and not allowing booting up?

Will a bad keyboard, or keyboard port, make a computer lockup and keep it from rebooting?
I have a slimline s3200n that has been having random lockups.  When I try to reboot it, it gets stuck at the startup screen (the one where you get the F9, F10, etc options).  I can hit F9 for hours and the computer does nothing.  I have to do another hard shutdown and if I wait for a little bit the computer will start back up again.  Will work fine, then randomly lockup and go through the cycle again.
I tried to run the Hardware diagnostic utility but it gave me an error, didnt write down the exact error, but it was a timeout error while gathering hardware information.
I am using the keyboard that came with the computer and I do not have another keyboard to use for a test.

I have this exact same issue, and am wondering what to do. I have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and am using 10.4.11 as software. I have a Dell monitor. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • Ms 6378 ver 3.0 or what / lock up Athlon XP 1800

     :O
I too have a MS-6378 notherboard. Version 3.0. I am running a Athlon 1800 XP with 256 MB ram. I have a problem that my computer lockup everyonce in a while. Sometimes I could be surfing the net or the next just typing a letter on word. I know I can not play any games because that is a automatic lock up. I tried to uninstall the on board graphics and install my Nvida TNT 64 Pro. No way computer lock up on boot up. For those of you thast are having video problems, can you see the first screen at all. If you can make sure you go in to your bios and change the video to AGP. Yes I know that you don't have a AGP slot but MSI considers that on board video junk a AGP graphics card, I guess. Any way MSI says on their page realease for the ms-6378 that only Version 2.1 supports Athlon 1800 XP cpu's. My book says the one I have does. What gives?????? I amn tired of frequent lock ups. I has nothing to do with heat. It can lock on boot up or sometimes after 12 hours of sitting here. SOme please help me. If anyone needs help let me know. May I hqave been through that as well and can help.

Hey buddy, I have a similiar problem with my computer.  What happens is that my CPU overheats extremely bad and locks up.  I don't know what's happening.  My computer is a MSI board, not sure which since I sold it already with a T-Bird 800.  It say in the bios that the heat is as high as 55 C or 110 F.  I been using my system for 2 years now (sometimes I leave it on 24/7), and it just suddenly happened one day.  I know it doesn't have anything to do with my CPU or FAN, cause I replaced both of those (I also use termal grease).  I was using Windows XP, than I switched back to Windows 98 SE, same thing happen.  Sometimes I just want to boot up and it will lock up.  I would format and it would lock up half way too.  If anyone knows whats happened to my computer, please let me know! Thanks.

  • ITunes wont open, cant uninstall, cant upgrade, cant reinstall. please help

recently, itunes decided not to open. no error message, no computer lockup, just not open. so when i tried to reinstall via add/remove programs, the installer opened, and acted normal, said it was validating install, then when it got to removing old program, it froze and a windowsey-looking error message popped up saying that "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavaliable" "click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'itunes.msi' in the box below" [dropdown+browse button]. the dropdown lists 2 file paths one being in the temp files in mydox and the other being in some application cache files in some system folder. neither works.
please help! im stuck! i have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, repairing, downloading the most recent and trying to install that, and even downloading an older version, and i all get the same error message.

a windowsey-looking error message popped up saying that "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavaliable" "click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'itunes.msi' in the box below" [dropdown+browse button]. the dropdown lists 2 file paths one being in the temp files in mydox and the other being in some application cache files in some system folder. neither works.
with those symptoms, let's try the following procedure.
first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
next, use the the following document as a guide for manual removal of leftover itunes and quicktime program files:

now try another itunes install. does it go through properly this time?

  • V 7.02 still horrible

Well, the description states that this new version corrects several of the issues in 7 and 7.1 hmmmmm. Not true for me at all. Upon first installing the update, the same computer lockup occurs while iTunes checks for gapless playback, usually by song 28. After rebooting and retrying I managed to stop gapless playback. Again, a crash for no apparent reason. Reboot again, now the whole thing freezes. Menus wont open, songs will play if opened outside of iTunes, but you can not stop them or open any menus, or even quit the program. Tried to reinstall, and the same thing all over again. C'mon Apple, could you fix this for real like soon?

It does not even get to the gapless playback thing. Right upon opening nothing responds. Scrollbars/menus look normal, but are unclickable.
okay. let's try an experiment aimed at working out if this is a systemwide thing, or if it is associated with a specific user account on the PC. the experiment is not a cure in itself, but it can give us a heads-up on possible causes/treatments of the issue.
    here's the experiment.
head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.
now log out of the old account and log into the new account.
does itunes launch properly (without the subsequent freeze) from inside the new account?

  • Getting Apple's "Midi Network" to work

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro computer to work as a wonderful "slave computer". Basically, because I extensively use the "CPU & Memory hog" Kontakt/Kontakt Player programs, I purchased the new MacBook Pro to divide the work load. So far, it's proven to do this nicely! The MacBook Pro is a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB's of SDRAM running on Leopard 10.5.4. I have an external hard disk drive which houses all of the instrumental sound libraries. The external hard disk drive is connected to the MacBook Pro using an eSATA connector. The audio device used is a new MOTU 828 MK3.
My older Mac Pro workstation is noted below. Please note that I have not upgraded the older Mac Pro workstation to Leopard YET. Although I do plan on upgrading the operating system, things are working quite fine using 10.4.11. I use M-Audio's Keystation Pro 88, connected to the older Mac Pro workstation, as the midi controller.
    The issue. . .
I can't get the Apple Midi Network to work between the two Apple computers. They both seem to see each other, but midi information does not seem to be transferred between the two computers.
At present, I have both networked via a NETGEAR 8 Port 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Switch. This is so that I can have access to the Internet. Now, I am able to transfer files between the two computers. Both computers seem to "see" each other using this network method.
For the MacBook Pro, I am using a CAT6 ethernet cable. I think that this is also true for the older Mac Pro workstation.
I believe that I am configuring the "Midi Network" function correctly. I can see it via the Logic Pro 8.02 program (in the Environment).
Finally. . . I am able to use Music Lab's MidiOverLan CP3 between the two Apple computers!! This is solid! Why, though, am I NOT able to get Apple's "Midi Network" to work?? Am I misunderstanding its function?? Does it not work when one computer is operating under Leopard and the other (older) computer is using the older version?? Could it be the CAT 6 cables?? The NETGEAR switch??
At present, I am happy using the MidiOverLan CP3 program to communicate midi information between the two computers. It would be nice to be able to correctly use Apple's own software, though. (Maybe it's user error??)
    Thank you in advance.
    Ted

Several months ago, I DID get this feature to work...And I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly what I did. It took several attempts. I linked my intel and PPC mactogether.
The problem was, there was too much of delay to make this a useful feature for realtime recording. I was trying to play a virtual instrument, that was a PPC plug-in while recording on a newer macpro..
If you were willing to create 'scratch' tracks one computer, using native Logic plugins, until you had all the midi data right. and then wanted to port midi over to the 2nd computer, and create a more detailed sound to port back into your 2nd computer, it CAN be done. but like I said the delay was too much..(I couldn't get it to be a realtime feature)
There was a 'delay adjustment' feature, in the midi, but I couldn't get that to be useful. If you have plug-ins that you absolutely can't live without, you can try this, but I found it to be too much trouble, and there were some computer lockups involved.

  • IMac display doesn't turn back on after sleep

This is a new problem on my two-year old iMac, and didn't happen before. What is happening with my iMac is that when it goes to sleep and the display turns off, the display doesn't turn back on when I move the mouse, press the keys or the power button.
It happens only after around 12 hours or so of inactivity, it seems. I have to reboot the iMac to force the display to turn back on. I think it is display issue, not the computer lockup because I checked which logs were written in /var/log - system.log was being written until I rebooted the iMac. However, I didn't see any information in there around the same time that I tried to turn the iMac back on.
Any ideas on how to debug the issue.

    Hi dailyjoe
    1. Reset your SMC exactly as instructed in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
    2. It would be normal for you to have to startup your iMac if it lost power while in sleep mode, look at the box "Start up automatically after a power failure" in the Energy Saver preference.
I have always left the box for "Start up automatically after a power failure" unchecked and do occasionally find the iMac is shutdown because the power has gone off. I would suggest leaving the box unchecked, it's better than having the iMac going off & restarting multiple times if you are having bad weather or power issues.

  • Lookout 6.5 Modbus Serial Problem

    Hi
I have a Lookout 6.5 system that has been running properly for well over a year. Normally we usually experience a computer lockup (Usually Windows is Frozen) and have to reboot the computer 2 or 3 times a year. But recently we are having a problem where all of the modbus secondary units are giving us an error the says cannot communicate with the modbus secondary ETC. We get this error message for all of our RTU's except the local MODBUS controller which is a Zetron 1700. When this happens we get the red X's on all of the I/O points in our process and everything in the field stays at its current state. This has happened at least 6 times in the last month!
To try and narrow down the problem I have had my customer power cycle the MODBUS controller and the radio and that does not fix the problem. When the MODBUS controller is power cycled we can see the controller is getting responses from all of the external RTU's but Lookout still does not see the data. I have also had them shut down Lookout and then restart Lookout and this also does not fix the problem. The only fix seems to be to restart the computer and then everything comes back up running properly. Because we can see what time the problem occurred I can then go into the Windows Event Viewer and look for any problems around the time when the problem started. But there is absolutely no events that would indicate a problem in either the System or Applications Event Logs?
The system is running Lookout 6.5 build 49153 on Windows 7 64 Bit. The serial connection is using a USB to RS-232 converter. Any help you can give me in troubleshooting this issue would be greatly appreciated. I need to get this resolved ASAP because the process is running a city's fresh water system and so far we have overflowed the tank several times and one time we got dangerously low because of this issue.
    Thank You
    Rob

I can say that your experience is not the normal.  Having installed Lookout hundreds (literally) of times on machines from Windows 98 to Windows Server 2008 R2 & 7, I have not experienced this problem.
Best of luck in the future,
    Mike

There are no known issues between ur mobo and ur gfx card. Issues like these are moere chipset related then brand related.
Problem seems to be PSU related, an older 350w PSU will be unable to supply enough juice on 12v to feed a power hungry P4. Check the ammount of amps it delivers on the 12v rail(s). According to Intel specs u need at least 20 amps on 12v.
I don't think it's bios related. Bios issues rarely expose themselves in instabtable behavure.
Don't think it's Dx9 related, cus ur rig also freezes without using Dx9 extensions, eg surfing the internet.
The driver version u use is a decend one, and shouldn't cause the problems that you encounter.
I put my money on the PSU as trouble causer.
Good luck and keep us informed on ur progress.
