HP Pavilion a6110n Startup Problems, Fan Runs Full Tilt and then Shuts Down

We are currently running into an issue where our computer, when we try to power it on, turns on briefly with the fan running at full tilt. After a few seconds, the computer then shuts down and everything turns off. When the monitor is connected, we never do see anything show up there. We opened up the case and cleaned out the fan and the cooling unit completely, and then we even completely removed and then reconnected the unit. Still, the computer continues to do the same thing. Does this sound like a bad sensor? Like the computer thinks it is overheating and just shuts itself down?
Thanks for any help. We tried some of the advice we found on here, like stated above, and seem to have run out of options.

It is the same for the desktop or notebook. The one blink means that you are having an issue with the CPU, unfortunately. At this point if you are in warranty give HP Total Care a call at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or visit the link below if you are outside North America.

hi, re my fans, this issue is about 1 week old and the machine is behaving normally. However...the bottom of the machine is quite hot (but it has always been quite warm) and I do have my battery settings in preferences set to high performance (uses more memory.) Also, I often stream video thru Firefox while working on medium/large Photoshop Docs as well as leaving ITunes or Preview open in the background. Also, I leave my MacBook on continually...it's 3 years old...should I be concerned? Is this issue indicitive of a battery problem or Sudden Computer Death Syndrome?

Sleeping G5 often makes fans run full blast and machine unresponsive

the only thing new lately is that I installed Leopard 10.5.3 on my dual 2.0 GHz G5 tower.
I usually sleep my machine all the time
now it's a crapshoot whenever I sleep it whether or not it will go to sleep normally, or freeze in a state of screenless unresponsiveness with the fans running on full blast with no way to stop except a hard shut down or power kill
other than this the machine is literally working just fine. Never interferes with my work.
I don't know if this is 10.5.3 related or not, but I do wonder.
I started up from an applecare disc and did a full diagnostic and everything checked out
I guess I'll have to test Tiger sometime again but that'll be a pain because I'm already addicted to Leopard
I just hope this old faithful tower isn't going dead on me. and I wish there was some official word if this was just a 10.5 thingy

I believe I have solved this problem for now.
I opened up my G5 and used compressed air to blow out all the months of dust buildup in the machine.
I re-seated every single removable component inside (RAM, PCI cards, graphics card, etc)
I also pushed the PMU reset button once and then put the machine back together.
I proceeded to sleep it and wake it up about 5 times in a row, and it didn't exhibit the blowing fans problem and the light was "snoring" as it normally should in sleep mode.
A few days later, the machine hung up after being put to sleep AGAIN with the fans kicking up and the light on my cinema display staying one dim level without the "snoring."
This time I disconnected my Belkin USB hub and I have not seen the problem resurface since.
The interesting thing is that cleaning out the machine and resetting the PMU sure seemed to help.
So maybe it was a combination of things that were the culprits.
I also wonder if I can ever use this perfectly good and only 1 year old Belkin USB 2.0 hub ever again.
My father uses the same model on 10.5.4 as well on his MacPro without any problems. I am on a G5.
I wonder if there's a firmware on the Belkin USB hub that could be in need of upgrading or if I simply cannot use this hub w/ this computer anymore.
(luckily I don't need it urgently right now)
I will report back if the problem happens again, but for now, since the computer has been sleeping totally fine for days now since removing the USB hub, I am marking this question as answered and hope that this info can help other people.
If anyone has anything to add to this thread or knows about the specifics I've discussed above, please feel free to respond more.

Fans running full blast and CPU

I have a late 2003, early 2004 dual 2.0 ghz G5,1 gig ram running OS x 10.4.7. Everything has been fine up until a few weeks ago the fans started running at full speed when the system was on, no variation, just full speed. I ran the hardware test disc and I get the following error, 28 seconds into the test,----2SAM/1/3:CPU B AD 7417 AD4 post/2176/0---
I have talked to a service centre close by and they have told me that the CPU is bad and needs replacemwnt to correct the fan problem. Everything runs normally as it used to, sleep, wake, all function fine. Do I need a new CPU or is their something else causing the problem??

This is after the system has been running for the better part of an hour with the room temp. at 65 degrees Fahenheight. Programs running at the same time that these temperatures where taken are as follows-- Quark express, Garage Band, Aperature, MS word, Illustrator 10,Firefox, Filemaker Pro. With all those programs running activity monitor for CPU reads as follows--
% user--3.5
% system--2.0
% nice--O
% idle---94.5
System memory shows as having 330 mb free at the same time
Fan speed is a constant " turbo" sound, no variation in speed or sound, very loud.
It would seem that as you have suggested that I am getting a false reading from the Apple Hardware test as all readings seem to OK.What do you suggest that I try to do to bring the fan speed down to a normal level? It would seem that the dual CPU's are OK and that something else is causing the problem?? Would you agree? Appreciate any help that you can suggest.

Windows running very slow and doesnt shut down peoperly

I have to manually press the on/Off button to shut off the computer.
also everything seems to load very slow including windows when I start up my computer.
Is there some free software out there that I can download that might help fix my issue or maybe something I can try to help speed up my computer. I have already run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware / SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition / disc cleanup /defrag.

MacBook is running very slowly and keeps shutting down

My computer is painfully slow and keeps telling me that my Finder has paused. It often does this when I have multiple web pages open or when I'm using more than one application. I only use Office, Preview and Firefox or Safari - depending on which is faster that day so it's limited what I can do. It also regularly brings down a dark screen over the top of whatever I'm doing telling me to shut off my computer. There is no obvious pattern to it but sometimes it happens repeatedly so I can't use my Mac at all. I thought it might be a memory issue, but that is listed as OK. I read elsewhere that it could be that I need to update my software so I did this and deleted the cookies but there is no difference. Can anyone suggest what I can do to stop this happening?

Several well-known troublemakers exist with that Mac but it is premature to do anything else until you fix its hardware.
Back up your Mac, if you have not already done so. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.

G5 start up problem: stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength

hi, i'm new to discussions, so i hope this question and my technical knowledge and descriptions will be OK: problem: G5 20" stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength..
so far i've tried but did not work:
- power off by pressing the button for 5 secs,
- checked all cables connections etc, take out the power cable try again, etc.
- removed all USB connections, re-did
- tried to use it as 'target drive' connected to my macbook by firewire
- tried to start up and keeping C key pressed
- tried to start up with 'shift' key pressed
- tried to start up with command, options, P and R keys pressed,
- i had an additional RAM, i've taken it out and tried again, no luck
- i've put in Mac OS X install disc1, no luck, and now disc is inside my iMac, can't take it out
any recommendations? thank you!

You may not actually have a bad processor. On the Dual G5's it's not uncommon after a few years for dust and corrosion to build up between the processors and their sockets. You can fairly easily remove the processors and clean the connections yourself if you're at all handy. Basically, snap off the heatsink covers, loosen a few screws and the processor and heatsink come out as a unit.
Clean the contacts on the processors (carefully). And clean the sockets. Be sure to put the same processor in the same place or you'll have issues.
I used 90% isopropol alcohol to clean mine last year. Let it air dry and blew both the socket and the cpu off after with canned air. That done, I reinstalled the processors, buckled everything up and no more "bad" processor... The machine worked perfectly from then on and I assume it still does today. Don't know, someone stole it last month:(...

Fan runs full speed at start up

HP Pavilion p6-2037cb purchased 1/19/12. Windows 7. There is no error message.
When I turn the computer on after it has been off all night the fan runs full speed. This happened a few times in the first month. The first time it stopped itself after a few minutes. Then I learned to stop it by simply restarting the computer. This still works, but what used to happen a couple times a month, has happened twice in two days so I worry the problem is getting worse.
It never happens when I am using the computer because I do nothing that requires a lot of cpu's or causes heating. I just surf the web and do email. No games or videos or TV.
If it is a fan connection problem I would like to know the nearest repair service. I would rather bring it in than ship it. But I can't find a list of authorized warranty repair service centers. I followed links on HP Support Assistant but got sent to a site that does not list Pavilions.
I need to know why the fan runs full speed at start up and where to get it fixed near where I live.

Fans running full speed after hard drive replacement

I have a 24" aluminum iMac (iMac7,1) which had a hard drive failure. I replaced the hard drive myself and all went well. However, now my fans are running full speed. This appears to be because of a problem with detecting my temperature sensors now. During the install I only touched two temp. sensors, the hard drive sensor and the LCD sensor. I made special care to make sure I got the sensors back in place.
Using iStat Pro the only temp. sensors I have readings for are the Hard Drive and Power Supply. I am missing ambient, optical drive, CPU, and display. Out of those the only one out of the missing ones I touched are the display one. I have since gone back into the machine to ensure the LCD temp. sensor was fully connected and to ensure the HD one was connected (although that one is working).
What is really strange is the ambient sensor appears to be a diode on the main board so I really don't see a way I could have messed that one up. Also, I didn't touch the CPU sensor (didn't even see it), nor did I touch the optical sensor.
Anyway I have tried:
PRAM reset
SMC reset
went back into the box to make sure all temp sensors where in place.
I am out of troubleshooting ideas. Can anyone provide additional insight?

Besides for the fan noise the machine is running like a champ. The new hard drive seems to be fine, actually my machine boots up faster now than it ever did (faster drive I suppose). I ran disk utility and did a verify on the new disk and it didn't detect any problems.
The fans run at full speed immediately at power-on (maybe a one second pause). I first noticed it when I booted up from the startup disk to do a time machine restore. So yes, it occurs when booting from a system disk.
I have been unable to run Apple Hardware Test, I saw this step in some google searching and Apple docs but I don't seem to have AHT on any disk. I have tried putting the Snow Leopard disk in and holding "d" at boot time to no affect. I did some further reading and found that AHT may only be included on disks that come with the machine. I am going to try to dig up my Tiger disks and see if I can get AHT to run from there (10.4 was the factory installed OS when I bought my iMac).
I am also considering trying to re-install SMC firmware (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2368). Even though it will be the same version at least I know the SMC reset has taken place.
Since the fans run full speed right at start up that suggests to me that it is a physical hardware problem (i.e. something wrong with the sensors) or a firmware issue. I am leaning toward firmware.

CPU fan running full speed after 15 minutes

My 3 month old iMac 24" has just started having fan problems.
Before I went away on a training course, it was working fine. Left it switched off at the outlet for 3 days, now the CPU fan runs full speed after the iMac has been switched on for 15 to 20 minutes.
CPU temp is 24C, CPU heatsink is 28C. Ambient is 17C. CPU fan is 3600rpm. Other fans are normal.
CPU usage is less that 10%. Only Safari is running.
I've tried resetting the SMC - left all plugs disconnected for 15 minutes, reconnected mains power for 15 minutes, reconnected USB, then switched on.
Still the same - OK for 15 minutes, then CPU fan runs full speed.
Anything else that I can try?

I tried again, following your instructions exactly. It seemed to work, running normally for about an hour.
I left all the USB devices unplugged, except for the keyboard and mouse.
I then shut the iMac down, but left the mains power turned on at the wall. When I switched it on again 2 hours later, all was OK for 15 minutes, then the CPU fan ran at full speed.
Shutting down for a few seconds fixes it for another 15 minutes.
I'm wondering if it's a software problem, although I haven't loaded any apps recently, apart from a few monitoring programs since this problem appeared.
Last night I left it running the extended hardware test for a couple of hours, and the fans were fine.
One thing that I noticed yesterday was that the "GPU" temperature readings in iStat were all missing (just "-" displayed) for a couple of seconds when I clicked on Dashboard. Is there a way to keep iStat open while I'm using the iMac?
I think I'll try booting XP and see what happens.

Random Overheating/Fans Running Full Blast

Ever since I received my Early 2008 Mac Pro a couple of months ago, it would randomly begin blowing the fans at full blast and continue to do so no matter which OS I boot to, Mac OS X, Windows, or even Linux discs. iStat Pro reads that my Northbridge is running at 249º F, which is completely ridiculous, since all of the internal components to the machine are running very cool. This Northbridge sensor is appearing to throw the fans into overdrive. It sounds like I'm working next to a vacuum cleaner. It's very loud and irritating to work next to.
Unfortunately for me, I don't live near an Apple store, or have the means to get to one. Apple also will not let me send in my machine. About a month ago I had the chance to drop my machine off at an Apple store, but the geniuses were very confused about the problem. 2 Weeks later I received a phone call explaining that my problem was fixed. They never explained to me how the problem was fixed. I had a friend drive out to the Apple store and pick up my machine for me, but when I turned it back on, it still ran full blast. Nothing was different.
I came back from work one day and to my surprise the machine was completely silent. It has been randomly going from full blast fan speed to normal fan speed ever since, fixing itself every few days. I have 0% CPU usage at all times, yet the machine thinks it's overheating.
So now I ask you, Apple Discussions Board members, what can I do to resolve this annoyance? I have:
Reset PRAM
Reinstalled Mac OS X
Unplugged the computer for days on end
Swapped Hard Drives
Taken RAM out
Tried SMCFanControl
Taken out that little CR2032 battery on the mainboard
And no luck. Help is appreciated!

Yesterday I popped in my disc and did an Apple Hardware Test. It passed with flying colors after hanging up and appearing frozen for 10 minutes. Found that little button behind riser A and pushed it for 5 seconds, rebooted a few times, unfortunately it did not work.
Also where is the Apple Hardware Monitor? Are you sure you don't mean Activity monitor? I couldn't find where the temperature/fan readings are in Activity Monitor.
The fans turned off, however, today when my computer woke up from sleep mode. They were off for about ten minutes when all of a sudden the fans kicked on full blast. This was strange because the computer would usually gradually increase over a 15 second period... not immediately. So now it's still stuck here, making noise :\

Fans run full speed when using Parallels

I have Parallels installed on my MacBook but the problems is, whenever I run Windows XP, the fans run at full speed. I try not to run too many programs but nothing seems to help.
Any suggestions?

I think that it's normal that the fans run full speed when you use Parallels. It also means that your MacBook's thermal paste was applied well.
Runing Windows XP in Parallels is a CPU intensive task and it takes a lot of power to run it. As a consequence the CPU get hot and the heat is transfered to the cooler, where the temp sensors sense it and make the fans run faster.
It's normal.
I bet your MB doesn't get as hot as some do...

Spinning beach ball of death after crash with fans running full speed

I recently put my machine to sleep - came in the next morning to find it running all fans at full speed and frozen. Did a hard reset (power button in for 5 seconds waited 15 secs and then power on. It rebooted after a long re-boot period. Since then it has slowed down. Many apps take an age to open. Many freeze and there is the infamous SBoD. I have rebuilt permissions, installed 10.5.8 combo, done a permission repair from a separate firewire disk, run onyx - which at time never ends and has to be aborted. Activity monitor shows no exceptional activity when the SBoD is running. I had significant issues until last December when i did a clean rebuild and installation of leopard and put all essential software in from clean install disks - all in all had a pristine machine which was working perfectly until the week before last when the full fan and freeze crash occurred. I notice that it speeded up after the 10.5.8 combo install and permission rebuild from external disk but gradually slows down and gets increasingly unstable requiring forced reboots more and more often. I have no hacks or other background processes other than Virus Barrier 6 which ran perfectly before the crash.

As expected after running well at about 11:40 Mail slowed down and the SBoD started.

Classic makes fans run full speed

I think this is new. When I run Classic my fans run full speed (10.4.8 G5 iMac 20") with any of the kid's games. I've done the SMU reset, blown dust from vents, tried different power settings. I think blowing out the dust reduced fan use in OS X, but not in classic.
Thermograph data suggests the fans are behaving appropriately, so I think the system is running hotter than in the past. Anyone have other ideas? Anyone else seeing this classic behavior?

I discovered that going back to Classic from one user to the other make a large use of CPU (80 to 90%) thus rising the temperature and conversly the fan...
If you open classic in one enironnment that's not true. Check it with Acivity Monitor.

Satellite A300D - Fan running very loud and notebook is getting very hot

I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction as what to do with the overheating problem i currently have with my A300D. I have had the laptop for under a year so it is still under warrenty but i am not sure where to go or what to do in order to repair it.
The problem: Around two months ago I noticed the fan running very loud and also the laptop becoming very hot. Now it runs so hot the laptop switches itself off completly. The heat being fanned out of the laptop is so hot! burns your my infact.
Has any one any advice they could offer me.

The notebook should be cleaned every 3-4 months and I do this every 3 months. Every time I do it Im wondering how much dust comes out and after this procedure the notebook is a lot of cooler.
