  • DVD-RAM drive not detected

    Hello :]
I recently bought an old Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) off of eBay. The only problem I am having with it is that the optical drive is not detected entirely (and isn't shown in System Profiler). I am pretty sure that the current drive is the original DVD-RAM one.
    Thanks :]

    Hi, sburton0 -
The lights indicate the drives are receiving proper power; the optical drive's external button will open the tray regardless of whether the Mac 'sees' the drive.
Since the Zip drive is also not shown in System Profiler, that could indicate an issue with the built-in controller for that bus.
However, it is not unusual for a cable to work loose when a machine is moved around and jostled, as can happen a lot during shipment and related movement. Check the data cable where it connects to the main logic board - unplug it and re-insert it, making sure it is well seated. Do this with the machine powered down, of course, and avoid touching anything on the main logic board.
It is possible for the data cable to get pinched inside the machine when the side panel/door is closed - if this cuts into the cable, it can cause a short or interruption. Make sure that has not happened.
In theory one of the jumpers on the optical or Zip drive (if either uses jumpers) may have become dislodged, altering the config of the drives' addresses such that the Mac can't read them. This is a remote possibility - once inserted, a jumper is not easily worked loose.
If it does appear that the built-in controller for that ATA bus has failed, a PCI ATA card should work as a replacement; the alternative is to replace the main logic board, which is far more expensive.

  • Optical Drive Not Detected

    Hey all,
I'm running Arch x86_64 with Gnome, fresh install, and for some reason my optical drive isn't detected.  I know the drive works, as I can boot to cd's and the likes, however, the drive doesn't automount, and in fact isn't detected at all (so it seems to me, at least) within the session.
I could really use some help, and will gladly provide any information needed.  Thanks in advance!

I don't know anything about automounting, but Arch doesn't provide /dev/cdrom links anymore, just /dev/sr0 - maybe that's the problem? Have you tried mounting manually using /dev/sr0 as the device?
    What's the output of
    cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info

  • Why is my optical drive not detected by the computer. hp dv5-1132us

the optical drive on my hp dv5-1132us is not being detected by the computer, how can i fix it?

    Try this Microsoft autofix:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
You can also try the manual fix described in the same post.
If this does not work you have to start thinking hardware. You can test whether the drive is working, independent of Windows, by trying to boot from the drive with a bootable disk.

  • DVD-ROM drive not detected in WinXP

If you need to know my system specs, they're in my signature. Anyways...
For the past month, I've been struggling to get my new AMD64 up and running. First the processor was bad, then the board, AMD had sent the wrong processor (I bought an Athlon64 2800+, they had sent back an Athlon XP 2800+, which would have made me angry had they not upgraded me to 3000+ for the mixup :D).
Finally got my computer back and everything seemed to work, then I started having problems (a random device would lose power during regular operation, forcing me to reboot and have another problem). Went out, bought a new case with a 500w PSU. Gutted my old case, put all the stuff in the new case, turned it on, things were fine. I was able to load WinXP onto an SATA drive I bought with no problems.
After WinXP was finally installed (and I got all my stuff from the PATA HDD :P), I went to update all the drivers and such when I noticed that there was NO CD-ROM drive. I'm not sure what it could be; it's the only thing on the primary IDE channel and it's set as the Master, and it worked fine to actually install Windows XP, so I'm not all too sure why it's not showing up.
If you guys have any ideas on how I can make it show up, I'd be most appreciated.

I've tried all that, but it didn't do anything.
See, here's the thing: The BIOS can see the drive just fine; I can boot from and install WinXP just fine. Once the installation is finished, however, I can't see the drive in Windows anymore...it's almost like it's not there anymore. I checked the connections of the IDE cable, and even took out my 40GB drive to put the DVD-ROM on the 2nd IDE channel and that doesn't work. I can confidently say that both IDE cables work properly since the BIOS can always find the drives that are connected to it, and Windows was able to see the hard disk regardless of what IDE channel it was on. Nothing has worked though.
I am getting desperate at this point; I have 3 other computers that I need to work on, but before I can do that I need a working PC of my own. I'll take any ideas you guys can give me. :(

  • CD/DVD optical drive pavilion dv6815nr

My computer does not show a CD/DVD optical drive in its device manager anymore. I can't update or roll back the drive because it says I do not have one. Has anyone had this problem?

Yes, lots of people. It is common with Vista but can happen with XP.
    AutoFix
Above is a link to a Microsoft site which has an automatic fix link. I have actually had better luck with the manual registry edit also described in the article. In fact, I just successfully did this about 20 minutes ago to a Sony Vaio I am working on. Good luck and post back with questions.

  • DVD optical drive no longer works with Windows under bootcamp or parallels

For some strange reason, the DVD optical drive- Optiarc 5680 on my 27" iMac, no longer works anymore with Windows under Parallels or Bootcamp. It used to work perfectly fine before, but now it just shows up with a yellow exclamation mark under Device Manager and Code 39 "Windows cannot load the device driver..."
The DVD drive continues to still work fine with OSX. But it won't work anymore under Windows via Parallels or bootcamp, despite trying to uninstall the optical device drivers, update, reinstall, etc. Anybody else experiencing this or have any ideas?

Finally found the solution for anybody else who runs into this problem. It was solved by doing a registry mod in Windows from this site:
    http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
described in “My CD drives have vanished (from Explorer, Device Manager, etc.)”
After applying the registry changes the DVD optical drive worked instantly again with Windows....sigh...guess I can't blame the Mac on this one.

  • How do I disable my dvd optical drive on my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion)?

    Hey,
I have dvd stuck in my optical drive and it keeps on making a noise-non stop. I've tried everything to remove it, ATM cards, rebooting whilst holding mouse key and eject botton, terminal command etc etc.-nothing works! I'm stuck in North Africa with no Apple services available anywhere close by.
I don't really use the dvd drive that much anyway so I would like to just disable my dvd optical drive all together. I saw that it is possible on Snow Leopard and Lion but the option to go to /Library/Extensions and removing (IODVDStorageFamily.kext) and removing it is not available on Mountain Lion.
    Help please!

Light source. Straightened paper-clip. Insert straight (no wiggling around) to find the mechanical eject hole on the edge of the DVD drive.
Hold the MBP trackpad down during a cold reboot. I know you said you used a mouse like this.
    In Terminal, type drutil eject
Try ejecting the DVD with the MBP flipped upside down. Sometimes all you need is gravity. If the credit card didn't pry it up off the drive spindle, maybe this will.
Because of your location, you may not have the tools to take the MBP apart and remove the DVD drive.

What is the best and reasonably priced external cd/dvd optical drive for an Imac 21.5 inches from late 2009?

A lot of people have a Mac where the superdrive has been taken out to be replaced with a harddisk. Try to find a friend who has done that, give him a beer and take the superdrive, then buy a superdrive container from OWC or another for  afew dollars and put it in there. This slimdrive container has a USB connector. There you go.

It appears that you did not understand the post that I made.
If you purchase a high end notebook that has a chipset with sata controllers that support SATA3 then SATA3 devices will run at SATA3 bandwidth. Your notebook is not one that does.
It would not matter which brand you chose.
If you decided to economize and purchase a mainstream notebook, then the issue would still be the same.
Notebooks are not created equally. It is the same with desktop PCs.
That is why each manufacturer has a tiered structure to accomodate the economic means of the target market.
    1) Entry level (basic chipset and CPU)  $
    2) Mainstream (mid level chipset and mainstream CPU)  $$
    3) High end.  (high end chipset and high performance CPU, wifi adapter and even SSD hard disks)  $$$

  • USB DVD Optical Drives

    Dear Forum:
(This is my first submission, so please forgive me if I don't do it correctly.)
A few months ago, I purchased a HP ENVY 23-k110 Desktop.  I did not know at the time of purchase that it did not have a DVD Optical Drive, so I purchased a USB External DVD Combo Drive Writer and it did not work - it just spun around for a few seconds while the green light flashed a few times.  Nothing happened on the screen.  I tried and re-tried to get it to work without results.
Thinking the drive was defective, I returned it and bought another combo drive of a different brand and, to my disappointment, I could not get this to unit to work either.  Again, nothing happened on the screen.  By now, I figured that either I was doing something wrong or maybe there was something wrong with my computer.  Out of frustration, I decided to get yet another, more expensive unit.  However, after following the instructions for this new, third combo drive, I could still not get it to work and I was becoming angry!  As was the case with the previous tries, nothing appeared on the screen.
If anyone has ideas or suggestions for me to get this USB External Combo Drive to function, I will be grateful!  Thank you for your time and help!  ~ Max

Is the computer recognizing other USB devices through those ports?
If not, try resetting your USB controllers.
(Instructions from the Microsoft Support Forum)
To disable and re-enable the USB controllers, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
Note If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, and then use the Start Search box.
Type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. Device Manager opens.
    Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Note You might have to scroll down the list to find this item.
Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click Uninstall to remove it.
Repeat step 4 for each USB controller that is listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.
Check the USB device to see whether it is working.
I work on behalf of HP (But this isn't my job)

  • CD/DVD Optical Drive problems

I've had lots of problems with my CD/DVD optical drive. Took it to the Genius Bar last month and had it replaced under warranty. Has worked fine with DVDs since. NOW, however, I have a CD in the drive -- stuck -- not registering on the desktop and inaccessible.
    1) Any suggestions how to get it out? (Why not the good old days of Apple when a bent paper clip was the ultimate tool?) I've tried Shutting Down, Restarting, with and without Command key down. Nothing ejects it.
    2) Any thoughts -- might it be the brand of CD or just a faulty mechanism?
    I'd really appreciate any help!
    Thanks, CLW

Depress the mouse button at startup and it should eject. If that doesn't work, post back for more suggestions.
