If you can run it under chrome, you have java installed.
There was some malware that exploited an older version of Java (not javascript) running in a Browser. Since few people use it Apple turned off Java by default in the Safari Browser.
If you need it for something, just turn it back on in Safari preferences (inside Safari). After a few months of non-use, you may find it has turned itself off again.

Since August 2012 updates for Java (and especially Java Runtime Environment, which is what you actually need) must now be downloaded direct from Oracle:

  • Launching a Java Installer as an administrator / root user

    My Usecase:
I have a java installer that does installation of my software on OSX 10.9. I need to configure my software in such a way that if a non-admin user launches this, it asks for an Administrator credentials, and when the user provides administrator credentials the software continues to install required files. This software packages some files that are laid out in administrator controlled folders. Essentially i want the java installer to run with elevated privileges.
What I have done so far:
The application that launches this java installer is written in Objective C. I have followed the https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/samplecode/EvenBetterAuthorizationSample /Introduction/Intro.html link and created a helper tool that is installed with the SMJobBless API. I am then connecting to the helper tool via XPC and then passing it a command that will launch the java command. The helper tool launches the java command successfully, but the launched installer is not running with elevated privileges? It inherits the privileges of the user who is logged on to the system. If an non-admin is running, then the launched installer runs with privileges of the non-admin user.
Can someone please guide me on this?

The power of Java added to the graphics capabilities of Flash might make Java developers salivate but it also might make pure Flash programmers dump in their pants.
The daunting thing about learning Java (to many lightweight language developers) is that it does involve quite a lot more technical knowledge, in particular knowledge of OO, exception handling and so on. Creating an intuitive and friendly interface for authoring good Java code without getting your hands dirty is the big challenge.
One possible solution is to use an intermediate scripting language to handle the lightweight operations typical to Flash while allowing the meatier Java goodies to be included in external classes. This script can be translated as the file is compiled, along with the graphical stuff.
The biggest obstacle to any new Java based graphics project would be acceptance and the facility for Flash programmers to migrate to it.
The trick is to keep end users happy with a format that looks good, runs relatively fast and downloads quite quickly while keeping developers happy with a format that is easy to author, easy to learn but still powerfull. A Java web multimedia package might lose out slightly on performance when compared to Flash but the flexibility and potential power is a very tasty carrot indeed.

  • Windows 8.1 Installation On Mac - Got a Problem

Windows 8.1 Installation On Mac - Got a Problem
    Hi everyone,
I'v researched a lot about installing Win on Mac but I still got a problem when everything seems to be fine.
I got a Macbook Pro Retina, Late 2013 with OSX Mavericks and Bootcamp 5 installed on. And for installing windows, I already got an empty 8GB USB Drive formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32). And I've prepared Windows 8.1 ISO in my Downloads folder.
During my last effort, I opened Bootcamp Assist and then Chose the options: "Create Windows 7 or later version installation disk" and "Download the latest windows support software from Apple". Then I chose my Windows 8.1 ISO location and my destination. When it finished ,I was expecting it to run windows setup. But it closed and nothing happened
When I opened BootCamp again, only the first two options were available as before and "Install or remove Windows 7 or later" wasn't.
Now ,what do I have to do exactly? (NOTE: I'm not a professional. So please answer in a simple way. )
Should I restart the Mac and Hold OPTION while booting to run Windows setup? I was thinking about it but I thought I might screw it up all. So I decided to ask it here to be sure.
Any help will be appreciated by heart!

    Hi Alcatrax,
I would recommend following the steps in this link in order to help you complete your installation of Boot Camp:
Boot Camp Help: Install Windows on your Mac
    https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#apdecf0e4b6-b472-438d-881e-57c230b 1c250
    Prepare your Mac for Windows
Boot Camp Assistant helps prepare your Mac for Windows by creating a new partition for Windows and then starting the Windows installer. Optionally, you can install Windows using an external USB drive that contains a Windows ISO image downloaded from Microsoft and Windows support software.
Important: If you’re using a portable computer, connect the power adapter before continuing.
Insert an external drive into the USB port on your Mac and keep it inserted while you install Windows and Windows support software.
Open Boot Camp Assistant, located in the Other folder in Launchpad.
Select the option to install Windows, select other options you need, then click Continue.
Here are the other options you can choose:
If you want to install Windows from an external USB drive and you have a Windows ISO image, select the option to copy the image to an external USB drive. If this option isn’t available, your Mac doesn’t support installing Windows from an external USB drive.
If you haven’t already downloaded the Windows support software for your Mac, select the option to download it. In a later step, you’ll install the Windows support software on your Windows partition.
Follow the onscreen instructions for the options you selected.
When you’re asked to create a Windows partition, specify a partition size. If you have multiple hard drives in your computer, you can select a different hard drive and create a single partition on that drive, so that the drive is solely used for Windows.
Note: You can’t resize the partition later.
If you need help determining the best size for your Windows partition, refer to your Windows installer documentation. For Windows 8, create a partition that is at least 30 GB.
In a later step, you’ll format the Windows partition.
If you are using an installation disc for the 64-bit version of Windows, insert it into the optical drive in your Mac or the external optical drive. Otherwise, keep the external USB drive with the 64-bit version of Windows inserted.
    Click Install.
Boot Camp Assistant creates the Windows partition, restarts your Mac, then opens the Windows installer.
Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!
    Regards,
    Braden

  • BI Java Installation: Clarification Needed!

I'm wondering if someone could help clear this up for me:
We have installed NW2004s SPS08 on Solaris with only the usage type EP (AS Java/EP). Awhile back I was tasked with connecting our BW ABAP system to our Portal ("Integration into the Portal" - transaction SPRO etc).
After starting this task I noticed I was missing things that the instructions were telling me to configure; i.e. Items that were related to BI that weren't in the Portal such as certain roles, the BI Repository Manager etc.
Reading around, it seemed like I need to install the BI usage type.
I have now been tasked with another installation of the Portal (NW2004s SR1 this time), but am trying to head off the problems I'm experiencing trying to connect the Portal to our BW ABAP system. This will be a Java only installation. I've read that BI-Java requires EP and AS Java, and that if I install the BI-Java usage type, EP and AS-Java will be installed automatically.
My question is, if I do the BI-Java installation and it automatically installs EP/AS-Java, will the Portal still act the same way as it does in my EP/AS-Java only installation I already have? We have many plans to use the Portal as an entry point for all of our backend systems, so if the Portal's capabilities are not what we see already (in our first installation of just EP/AS-Java) then we will have problems.
Any clarification is greatly appreciated and I will award points accordingly.
    THANKS!
    Beau.

I think that's what I needed to know.
I was actually wondering about DI as well. Our developers are having problems deploying .EAR files to our original EP-only install. They can deploy .PAR files with no problems, but .EAR files always error out. Maybe having DI will solve this problem as well? I'm a little concerned about the hardware capacity of this box with having BI, EP and DI all installed on it. I had contacted SAP about installing DI a while back and basically they had told me to install it on a seperate server, by itself. We're running a Sun Enterprise 420R, 4G of memory and a 450 mhz processor for this new installation. Do you think this box is capable of handle EP, BI and DI (AS-JAVA)?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Is there any way to create an installer for Mac OS and Linux OS once a stand alone application is created?

Is there any way to create an installer for Mac OS and Linux OS once a stand alone application is created?  I have created an executable application that I want to distribute to Mac and Linux users (different applications were created in the respective OS).  I was wondering if there is any way to create an installer?  I think there probably isn't...  If the user were to simply download the Labview Run-time Engine from ni.com would they be able to run the application or is it more complicated than that?
Thanks so much for your time.

I think Shane tried to say, that it is on the Mac OS X installation DVD, NOT the LabVIEW for Mac OS X installation medium. And that could very well have changed in recent Mac OS X versions as well. They used to have Xcode on it too, but that seems gone as well.

  • Running a Java Applet on Mac OS browser

I'm having trouble getting my Java Applet to work properly on the Mac OS version of IE5. Basicaly, the app fails to appear. Are there any do's and don'ts regarding the running of Java Applets on Mac Browsers?
I read somewhere that you can't send parameters through to the Applet. Is that true? I'm not trying to do this and it's still doesn't work.
    Any help would be appreciated.

If anyone can help me with this problem I would be greatful.

  • Installation on Mac was a mess

I am receiving messages every day encouraging me to update Thunderbird on my Mac but I'm really concerned to do it. A few weeks ago I did indeed do an update (31.3.0) and it was such a stuffup that I'm currently very wary of any new ones. The problem on the last update was that it wouldn't download emails (hello!) and it took me two full days to sort out, basically trashing the new update and installing an older one, then tweaking it to get me email archives back. Has anyone done the latest 31.4.0 installation on Mac and not been screwed up?

20 Million people dd the upgrade V2 to V3 a few had a problem, asking if anyone else has done an upgrade successfully is akin to asking if anyone else breaths. Yes they have, and no they had no issues. Does that do anything for you. No it does not.
Does the Yosemite update work for everyone? No it does not.
The past issue you describe sounds like an anti virus/ Firewall issue. Unfortunately I do not have a crystal ball to look into your past to determine what the issue was, but all I can say almost certainly is that as you never determined what the issue was you have not fixed it. v Next update you do the issue will return, and no fault of the software.

I tried to install Java on my MAC but unfortunately the download of the software always meets the same problem... It asks me to be under mac OS X 10.7 but my computer does not propose me update. What should i do ?
    Thank you

Note: Java 1.6 for Leopard is 64 bit only, but for Snow Leopard it is available for both 32 and 64 bit.

Since August 2012 updates for Java (and especially Java Runtime Environment, which is what you actually need) must now be downloaded direct from Oracle:

However, if you need the Jave 6 JRE and plug-in, MadMAC0 has posted at

Apple has also posted (Oct 22/12) the approved solution for restoring the Java 6 plug-in:

Interesting article here on why Apple removed Mac browsers’ ability to run Jave Applets:
