My laptop is making a clicking noise and I think it's coming from the hard drive.  I uploaded audio of the clicking to: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15528211/Memo.m4a.  Is this a normal sound or an indication of a problem?  Thanks in adance.

That is a hard drive clicking. It sounds kind of intermittent like it might be just the hard drive safety system parking the read head on the drive. Do you get a sustained click when you try to boot up? Have you tried the hard drive health test in the BIOS? Just tap F10 as you power up and go into the setup/bios and look for the hard drive self-test and run the long form version and see what you get.
Here is the Service Manual, which is always a good thing to have:

  • Problem with my iPod classic 160gb - making funny noises, and no download

Hi, At the same point every time i try to put music on my ipod classic 160gb, it begins to make a funny noise, and itunes and the ipod freezes. I have to disconnect it unproperly, and the message "The ipod disk could not be read from or written to", but my old music still remains. So i tried to restore the ipod on my macbook, but i still have the problem.
This is the 4th Ipod classic 160gb i have had, and there has been a harddisk problem with all of them, so this could be the problem, but the funny click-clack sound is new to this one.
Anybody in here have experience with such kind of problems?
Hope to get the problem solved soon.
    Oliver Nash, DK.

Unfortunately, when a hard drive starts clicking that means it's going bad. The mechanism is having trouble reading the drive. Since the iPod is mostly just a harddrive and a battery I have a feeling that this is your problem.
    watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMm6c3fr-fU
about 25ss in is where the clicking starts. If it sounds like that, but softer and more muffled since it is a smaller drive that is being enclosed then I think you might be SOL. Maybe if you're iPod is still under warranty you can get a credit and go for a touch and avoid moving parts all together?

  • TS1382 my ipod classic is making weird ticking noises

My ipod classic keeps turning on and off by itself, and is making weird ticking noises. What do I do!?

The ticking noise is the sound of the hard drive being started up and the stopped. This is normal.
What do you mean by "turning on and off by itself"? Do you mean the ticking noises (which is normal) or do you mean the display turns on and off, or do you mean the music turns on and off?

  • New iPod Classic 80gb Making weird clicking/grinding noise

I recently (2 days ago) purchased an Apple iPod 80gb and I noticed that when I go from the main menu to videos, or music, or anything else the iPod makes a weird clicking noise.
It comes from the iPod itself and it's loud enough to hear without putting your ear to it.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or if I should have it serviced?

Some "clicking" noise is normal - it's the hard drive spinning up and being read. However, it shouldn't be very loud (though, of course, loud is subjective). Now, if it is "grinding", that could be a problem. Does it stop after a couple of seconds after you change menus or start a song or video?
If you're concerned, exchange it (now's the time when it's new). Better that, than worry that your iPod may die any day.

My computer was working fine, But when I tried to write a message back to a friend on facebook, Every time I made a Key Stroke I would hear a clicking sound come from my computer and nothing would be typed on my computer, I have tried everything I could
think of to fix this problem but nothing has worked, When I hold down the Key after it clicks a second time it will type the letter out on the screen, But I can not write messages like that, it would take me an hour just to right a few words, I am using Windows
    8.1 Pro.
    Any Suggestions???

This may happen if Filter Keys are on.
Open Control Panel > Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use
Here scroll down to "Turn on Filter Keys" option
    De-select "Turn on Filter Keys"
Select the "Apply" button and "OK"

Recently my mac has been making a clicking noise and will not stop, it is extremely irritating. It is coming from the center of the computer, like where the screen connects to the keypad. any idea what is going on or how to stop it?

Possibly the hard drive is failing. Make a backup ASAP.

  • HT1363 ipod making clicking noise and won't work

Ipod making clicking noise and won't work. Display see apple store. We live in a rural area so one is not close!

OK, I have the 30G w/video and it does that too. I've had it a year with no problems. My husband went on the treadmill with it a couple days ago and after a few songs it froze. I did the whole regime of toggling and pressing menu/select button, I put in on my Bose speaker/charger and it switched to very low battery warning. When I took it off to move to computer it said to connect to computer and use restore (in a few languages). I connected and it recognized it and I did restore and after a few minutes screen came up saying it could NOT restore. Then ipod was unrecognized and then ipod screen gave me the very sad little ipod picture with the support web site. At that point it began making the clicking nose - morris code does describe it but I was invisioning a little nano sprite in there with a chisel!!So, same as you, I go there and it's like a maze trying to find help!! Of course my warranty was up exactly 6 weeks ago!! I tried linking through all the stuff like finding a service provider in my area, contact the "knowledge base" etc., and I can't get anyone! Now what are we gonna do?

  • My iPod Classic 160GB is recognized by computer, and goes through sync process, but still has old stuff...

My iPod Classic 160GB is recognized by computer, and goes through sync process, but still has old stuff...
I feel like there must be an issue with the library location, but I don't know how to correct that.  My Dad recently wiped my computer and deleted Windows XP and installed Windows 7.  I don't know what he did, but my iTunes library is still intact it seems. However, I've added quite a few podcasts that I'd like to sync to my iPod.  When I connect it, it goes through the sync process, but ends quickly and says its safe to disconnect.  None of the new podcasts are on there though.
Also, there was something really wrong with my iTunes account.  When I went to buy something from the store, it wouldn't accept my password, and when I went to reset it, it wouldn't recognize my birthdate and month (I had the correct username).  I ended up creating a new account and purchasing a song.  This time, it did sync the new song onto my iPod, but not the podcasts I'm trying to sync.
As far as the library location, is there anything particular that has to be included in that library in order for it to be recognized by iTunes when you sync?  Awhile back (before my Dad worked on my computer), I had changed the folder location to my external hard drive, but in researching, I saw that I still had in another drive some folders with music that is currently on my iPod.  So it looks like I have some stuff on two different drives... Maybe this has something to do with it not syncing right?
I did check, and my Firewall doesn't have iTunes blocked.
As you can see, I'm not very experienced with all of this... Sorry for the confusion.  If you are interested in helping me and have any questions, please let me know.
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me... I desperately want to be able to listen to my podcasts, as I'm a stay-at-home Mom of 4 little ones, and the podcasts are kind of an "escape" for me when the children are napping or playing. :-)
Thank you in advance for your help!

Oh my goodness!!  I am absolutely thrilled right now B-rock!!  I don't know how I missed it, but when I went back to change the setting like you mentioned, I noticed that the very top box that says "Sync Podcasts" wasn't checked!  I have no idea why... But my heart started to race when I checked that box and all of a sudden it started syncing all my podcasts!!  It's gonna take a long time (I have 385 of them!), but I am just so happy you helped me with this problem.  Thank you SO much!
