HT1423 Is it ok to install 2 memories of 2GB plus 2 of 4GB? (iMac, 21.5-inch, Mid 2011))

I mean, with any kind of future effects...
What about Apple Memories vs/ Kingstom ones for mac. Any advice?
Thanks,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can do it without any problem. 2x2 GB and 2x4 GB are valid. I recommend you to buy the RAM in OWC or Crucial in order to prevent compatibility problems and make sure that you buy the correct memory type for your computer

I've no idea why it has stopped working, but you could reset it:

The Mac SuperDrive built into your Mac is the Optical drive.
    1. Insert your Windows DVD in Optical drive. Disconnect any external storage.
    2. Insert a USB2 Flash drive. This will be used to hold the BC drivers.
    3. Start BCA. Check the options to download software and Install Windows. You do not need to download Windows. The BCA will download the BC drivers to the USB.
    4. Partition your drive.

The file seems to create the CD/DVD/Image and USB just fine. So I used this only to create a CD image which I then wrote on a blank CD which seems to work fine. Also, I played around a bit and had some partial success in booting the partition. I've updated my original opening post with the new findings.
Whew!! what a waste of time! Never want to do all of this again .

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Installing 10.6.8 partition on 10.8 iMac (mid 2011)

Hello.  I have recently bought a previous generation iMac, 21.5 inch mid 2011, 2.8gHz, i7 (special build), 8GB memory.  It was apparently a refurb, and purchased by the first owner around Oct 2012.
It came with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 installed, and I have updated to 10.8.3.  However, I'd much rather be using 10.6.8!  I have a lot of archived files on CD going way back to OS 8.1, and the fact that 10.8.3 can no longer read these backups was the final straw: that and the lack of Rosetta.
According to the 'original OS' stated on a couple of support sites, this configuration was indeed first issued with 10.6.8, but if I try to restart from the 10.6.3 universal installer DVD I just get a blank screen and a series of bleeps.  Does this mean that there has been a firmware change/upgrade that prevents 10.6 running, or could it just be that it needs a 10.6.8 install disc (if such a thing exists...)?
In an ideal world, I'd like to partition the internal drive and have both 10.6.8 and 10.8.x bootable.  I believe that the Parallels/10.6.8 Server route is another option, but it starts to get expensive...
Any workarounds would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Martin.

At the expense of repeating myself....
Yes, when the mid-2011 iMac's came out, they were shipped with Snow Leopard and a 10.6.7 install disk.  Shortly after they were introduced, Apple came out with Lion, 10.5, and subsequent iMac's were shipped with that.  If you bought a mid-2011 iMac from the refurb store, as I did a couple of months ago, it was shipped with Mountain Lion.  BUT, there have been NO fiirmware changes to the hardware that prevent the machines from running Snow Leopard.  As I stated earlier in this thread, I used an older MacMini running SL to clone a 10.6.8 hard drive and then used that to successfully clone 10.6.8 onto my iMac and it runs with no problems.  AND, Apple keeps track of the machines they sell - what software was shipped with what serial number.  So, if you bought an early release iMac new that came with Snow Leopard, you may be able to obtain replacement Snow Leopard restore disks for it.  BUT, if you bought a machine after the release of Lion, or a machine from the refurb store that shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, you CANNOT get a SL restore disk from Apple.  Trust me on this, I tried.  I spent a LOT of time, both through emails and on the phone, with AppleCare personnel.  If you don't have a 10.6.7 restore disk, the only way to get SL on one of these machines is with a clone from another SL machine.

  • Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed on MacBook Pro 8,2 (15 inch, Late 2011)

    Hi Everyone,
For the second time now, I have to bring my Macbook Pro 8,2 (macbookpro8,2, 15 inch, late 2011) running Mountain Lion back to the Genius Bar due to a unrecognized Wi-Fi Airport adapter. The computer was purchased in March of 2012.
The problem started as I was watching 'The Daily Show" online, when suddenly, I lost connection. I clicked on the wi-fi adapter icon on the top menu bar, and saw that no access points were available when there normally were over 20, including mine in the house. I went into the network settings under system preferences and saw that the wi-fi card was off (although it was just on and still showed the full-signal indicator in the menu bar), and attempted to click the button to turn it back on with no response. All other options were either greyed-out or displayed no information. The Hardware tab didn't even display and the mac address suddenly became all zeros.
I rebooted the computer, only to discover the wi-fi indicator on the menu bar displaying no signal. Upon clicking on the icon, the dreaded "Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed" was displayed. I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM with no success. I also rand the Hardware Troubleshooter ( Option - D upon bootup ) which neither saw the communications device nor reported finding any problem.
I brought it to the Genius Bar, and they ended up replacing BOTH the Logic Board, Wi-Fi adapter, and connection cable between the wi-fi adapter and logic board on July 23, 2012.
Now, it's October 10, 2012, and last night, as I was working through a VPN tunnel on the terminal on one of our remote servers, the SAME THING happened AGAIN! The connection was dropped, same scenario as above, and upon bootup I was greeted with the  "Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed" message again.
The hardware magically disappeard with no mention of this in the Console, as far as I can tell. The Console mentions the loss of connection and inability to contact DNS, but nothing relating to hardware.
For the record, the bluetooth continued to function both times I've had this issue. The first time this happened, I was running Lion and now I'm running Mountain Lion.
So apparently there is something really wrong with either the physical enclosure causing a short somehow, the quality of the Broadcom chip on this wi-fi device, or there's some type of software/power causing the chip to short out.
My compouter is as protected as can be - it's in a Speck plastic housing with a keyboard cover, which was purchased after the first incident, I use it on a hard flat plastic laptop tablet at home, and carry it around in a Timbuk2 Laptop bag. It also has never been dropped.
What's the problem here? Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks and all the best of luck and success solving your own computer problems

Sorry for the late reply. I had a bad experience with the Apple Store and the 'Genius' Bar where I live. However, in the end, I received my MacBook Pro back from repair and everything is working.
Like I said in my previous post, the first time the Wi-Fi broke, I was using Lion. The mother (Logic) board was replaced as well as the Wi-Fi card.
The second time it broke, I was using Mountain Lion. Booting up the Recovery partition and Snow Leopard (new install) did not solve the issue. The Apple Store confirmed that the Wi-Fi card was broken through various testing, which I observed.
Since the attenna wires for the Wi-Fi run through the display, we decided the next logical step was to replace the Wi-Fi card and the display. The reasoning is that there could have been a short or cross connection in the attenna wiring that was causing the Wi-Fi cards to short-out/burn-out. The Bluetooth continued to work in both cases the Wi-Fi failed, meaning that it was unlikely a cable problem.
Since the display and wi-fi have been replaced (20121025), I've had no problems. The wi-fi card is working.
I'm glad the kext file solution has worked for you. I've seen posts on this solution; however, after determining that this was indeed a hardware failure (by using Recovery console, booting from Snow Leopard, and using Hardware Troubleshooter (it didn't even see the Wi-Fi) ), I didn't bother with fiddling with the kext (driver) files. Besides, this hardware is supposed to be designed to work with the OS without any problems whatsoever. Shame on Apple if they don't ship proper drivers for their hardware!

  • Is it possible to boot to a Windows 7 install DVD from an external USB drive on current iMacs?

On the iMac I'm currently using, a mid-2007 24-inch, it's impossible to boot into a Windows install DVD from an external drive: I can hold down option on boot, and all my hard drives come up, but if the Windows disc is in my external DVD drive, it won't show up. I'll soon be upgrading to a late 2012 iMac, and I'd like to be able to install Windows 7 for a boot camp partition. Since that iMac has no built in drive, I'd like to know if using an external DVD drive will work on that model. I'd like to do that, seems easier than messing around with disk images. But we'll see...

You can use an external optical drive to install Windows without any problem with a Late 2012 iMac.
The reason that you couldn't install Windows from an external optical drive on the 2007 iMac is that it has got an internal SuperDrive, so Apple only allows you to use it to install Windows on your iMac

  • My Mid-2011 Macbook Air becomes extremely hot when installing apps from the Mac App Store and when deleting apps

My Mid-2011 Macbook Air 13-inch (OSX 10.8.1 Mountain Lion) becomes hot to the touch when trying to delete large documents, watching videos after waking it from sleep-mode and when installing applications from the Mac App Store. This has also been happening with OSX Lion before I upgraded it to Mountain Lion.

I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. What needed to be done the day that you set up the new Mac was go into the Mac App Store (MAS), sign into your iTunes/MAS Apple ID, go to the Purchases pane and Accept the iLife apps that would have been there in a special section. That would have sent you Mac's unique identifier code to Apple's servers and verified that this Mac was eligible for the bundled iLife suite and then registered these apps into your MAS account.
You might try going to  ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist, delete the adption plist, restart the Mac and then go to the Purchaes pane and see if you can Accept the apps into your account.

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Air won't boot after installing Little Snitch 3. Grey Screen.

    Hi all
I think the answer is probably that my SSD is toast but here's the symptoms in case anyone else has experienced this.
I installed Adobe Lightroom and also got round to upgrading my Little Snitch license and finally putting it on my 11" Air (mid 2011, latest version of Lion) as I use the computer more often than my Pro. After restarting as LS requires I was met with the grey Apple logo screen with no spinning gear. I forced a shut down and started again, again the logo screen, no spinning gear. I tried booting in to safe mode and got only a grey screen, then I tried booting in to recovery mode and got the Apple Logo again. I also tried cmd + C and alt/option with an external DVD drive and Snow Leopard with no luck
Then I tried a SMC reset, after that I started up and only got the Logo again. I reset the PRAM and the main effect of that was to reset the system volume to max so now I can hear the POST chime but also since the PRAM reset I get only the grey screen and no further. I tried to boot from a USB Lion recovery but only the grey screen. I have also tried booting with cmd +S with no luck either. Internet recovery doesn't work either.
The keyboard seems to be completely unresponsive, the caps lock key doesn't light up at all and I've a feeling that it's either something as simple as a problem with the keyboard or the SSD is kaput. I think that Little Snitch is a coincidence as there's nothing like this anywhere on the web as far as I can tell with Google and there doesn't appear to be anything on these forums that quite matches, especially the part about not being able to use and alternative boot method.
Anyone out there got any ideas?
    Cheers
    John

Hi and thank you for your response.
The fans only kick in when the machine freezes.
I updated from Snow Leopard to Lion using the App Store. The install was successful and worked for about 30 mins then the unresponsive behavior started. Once I rebooted, I received the issue previously stated above (i.e., the trackpad and keyboard is unresponsive).
I've also tried booting using the Option key and choosing the Recovery Mode. Once in Recovery Mode the same crash happens  (i.e., the trackpad and keyboard is unresponsive)

  • 13 in macbook pro (early to mid 2011) : after the update, computer freezes with spinning wheel every 30 seconds first with safari and now with all the applications. I don't have any programs installed and still had good enough memory on the RAM.

After the update of my 13 in mac book pro (early to mid 2011) , it freezes every 30 seconds with the spinning wheel and now it just freezes. Ive never had this problem until I recently updated. Also, I just checked now for available update ( which there was one), the update would process till the last step and it shows it cannot be expanded? Now my computer wont even restart (just have a grey screen with a cursor). Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on with my computer?
I also checked the memory and it showed available memory was over 1.5 GB. I dont have any programms installed and do not have backup yet ( dont really need it anyways)
Problems: first with spinning wheel every 30 seconds and now whole computer just freezes when I restart, it only shows grey screen after the starting sound or it takes about 8 to 10 minutes to restart.
This ALL happened right after the update with google chrome crashing. I know my apple care plan expired so I cant even go to genius bar. Do you guys know how much it would cost to get it fixed ? Or any recommendations I can do to fix this?

  • MBA13(mid 2011) Wi-fi: No Hardware installed

    Hi Community and Apple Support!
I bought MBA 13'' mid 2011 about 3 weeks ago in Houston,TX. Today in the morning, after reboot i cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network, because i see wi-fi icon disabled and it is shows: "Wi-Fi: No hardware installed". My MBA running on 10.7.3 MacOs.
    I've already tried:
    1). Remove all setting for network;
    2). Reset SMC
    3). Reset PRAM;
    4). Boot in Windows via Bootcamp (wifi adapter cannot be found as well);
    5). Rebooted about 10-15 times;
6). Run Wi-Fi diagnistics and it is hanged up.
I live in Ukraine, so there is no Apple Store in my country.
Please help me to fix this problem.
    Thank you!
    Alex

Restart the Mac but uncheck "Reopen windows when logging back in" in the dialog box.

  • (MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011) Wi-Fi: No hardware installed...

The Wi-Fi hardware irregularly connects to the network. Once the WiFi is disconnected, it cannot be reconnected unless restart or shutdown. I restart or shutdown to "refresh" the scenario but the problem has grown more frequent. I can connect to the network through Ethernet and when Wi-Fi functions. I really need the Wi-Fi to function to make use of this computer  at home and at work. Aside from going to a Genius Bar, what else can be done to troubleshoot a rogue Wi-Fi hardware connection?
    Thanks!
    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    OSX 10.9.5

    Reset PRAM.
Reset SMC (but no visual indication of reset).
The Wi-Fi is able to turn on and off (improved).
A day goes by with good connection.
Wi-Fi is now disconnecting realiably within 60 min of restart, no ability to toggle on and off after disconnection.
Hardware remains displayed as installed (improved).
The problem is still present. Could this be a hardware issue? I do not have AppleCare and hope to resolve this independently from Apple. Anymore troubleshooting suggestions are much appreciated.
    Thank You!
