HT201250 I just had a new hard drive installed in my iMac.  Migration manager cannot see my external Time Machine hard drive to restore the files and applications.  The drive is operational in Finder

I cannot seem to migrate the full time machine backup from an external hard drive back to the new hard drive.  Finder sees the drive and files.  When I use Migration managers, it only sees the computer hard drive after I select the time machine option to restore the files.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
With what OS X version did you make the backup? If it was the same as the version you are using now, you don't have to use Migration Assistant to restore the backup. Instead, there's a safer and better method, but you will lose all the changes you have made since the last time you made the backup.
Just hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery. Then, select the option to restore a Time Machine backup, and follow its steps. Also, you will be able to select the backup you want to restore

I had a repair done at the apple store where the replaced my hard drive and copied my other hard drive over to the new one.  Everything is fine except the time machine wont reconnect to my old file and is trying create a new file but not there is not enough space for both files files? Do I need to do something to have it continue to update my old file instead of recreating a new one?

Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups.  Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.

  • Time Machine only shows the current copy of the file I am trying to restore. There is none of the time machine backup histories shown. I am running OSX 10.7.5. I see the backup files on my external Time Machine hard drive. Help

Time Machine only shows the current copy of the file I am trying to restore. There is none of the time machine backup histories shown. I am running OSX 10.7.5. I see the backup files on my external Time Machine hard drive in the Backups.backupdb folder.
Time Machine does show the history of my Macintosh HD, but when I try to navigate to the folder I wish to restore the backup history disappears. I've been searching for answers and I have not found one that works for me.

  • My MacBook w/ OSX 10.6.8 cannot access my external Time Machine Backup USB Drive.  It says it is a Read Only drive.  When I went to change permissions I found all pernissions were listed as "Custom" and I could not reset them to "Read Write".  Any help!

This can be done easily with ethernet.
    Please follow the instructions strictly.
To make it easier I want you to do this overnight so you can turn off all your current connection to the internet.
Just go to the airport fan in to the top right and turn airport off.
Get ethernet cable and connect the laptop to the TC lan port.. ie <-> ones.
Press and hold the reset on the TC for about 10sec. until the front led flashes rapidly.
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup and change the wireless to off. (so other people around you cannot join your network of one).
Ignore all the errors.. they won't stop the backup working.
Go to the TM and reselect the backup target disk as the TC.
It should start after 2min and run through to completion.
That is it.. for a backup of many GB it might take a few hours.. so make sure the laptop has power plugged in and the sleep is off.. (on early ones I think this is needed but I am a late arrival to the scene).. sleep doesn't affect later OS.

  • After installing mountain lion, can i back up all my files from external time machine hard drive if i did the back up under Lion?

Hi. Want to find out before installing new Mountain Lion if I will be able to restore all my files (music, documents....) from my external hird drive if the back up was done under Lion. Or it is better to simply copy everything, altough it would be good to keep iTunes, contacts etc as well as they are at the moment. Could someone please tell me how to do it so I can go on with it and will not have to struggle after the installation? Many thanks.

You can do this. If you did an OS X Mountain Lion clean install, it will ask you to restore a backup, so connect a Time Machine disk and restore that

  • If I have backed-up my Macbook while using Time Machine with Mavericks, can I erase my drive, install Snow Leopard, then re-load my Mavericks backup from Time Machine?

Hi there. This is my first time using this community, so thanks for reading. It pretty much says it all up there on the top. I backed up my computer with Time Machine while using Mavericks OS. For the sake of optimizing my computer and giving it a fresh start, I want to erase my drive and re-boot it with Snow Leopard, which I have a disc for. Once all that is done and I have a "brand-new" computer, will I be able to reload my Time Machine back-up?? Thanks!!

  • Time Machine hard drive back-up. Is it gone?

    Hi,
I just bought a My Book 3T to backup my macbook pro 2009 (OS X). It asked (and I agreed) if it would be my Time Machine and I agreed. I didn't realize that Time Machine would actually erase files if the hard drive gets too full. I don't need this as I already have Blackblaze to provide backup in this form. I just need a hard drive to keep my files safe there so I can erase them from the mac which is running out of space (this would be backed up less often, but also backed up on Blackblaze).
Sooo... AFTER installing time machine and backing up the whole thing I went and did a partition on the hard drive so I could use it as time machine in 1 T, clone in 1T and keep the other 1 T for future use.
Obviously I did so successfully because I can no longer see the time machine drive. My question is is it gone or is it saved somewhere using up space in the hard drive? Can I now safely back up as Time Machine and Clone in those compartments?
    Thx

If you partitioned using the normal disk utility you will have deleted your old TM backup. You will now need to start a new one.

  • HT201250 i would like to use time machine but also back up other file to my external drive?

I just got a WD T3 external hard drive and I would like to use time machine but also back up other files that to the drive.  Can anyone help me out.
    Thanks Mark

You would need to go to your Applications folder>Utilities>Disk Utility> and there create Two Partitions on your external hard drive, naming them differently.  Then you could go back to your desktop, open the dock, right click on the Time Machine icon and select "Open Time Machine Preferences". In there select the external hard drive Partition that you want to use for TM.  The other external drive partition will be available for other uses.
    Hope this helps

  • HT3258 after   transferring data from old mac to new mac, I can't see the transfer files and application on new mac.?

How can I see the      data and application that I transferred from Old Mac to New Mac?
Transfer of all the files and application was successful but I can't see it on the New Mac.
    Help.

    Thanks for your reply
    I did reboot the system.
    still can't see new user.
One thing though when the system finished transferring the files
at the end a message came up
" 2013-09-11 04:18:05 +0000 Paul Nirwan could not be created.
I did the transfer two times, same thing. first time I used the WiFi
and second time from my back up disk with USB connection, using Migration Assistant.
Second time also said that Paul'Mac already exist, Paul'Mac 2 created.
How can I get rid of first data trasnferred?
It will be using too much space on hard drive if Ileave it therre.

  • I just had a new hard drive installed. After loading everything back on my computer from external drive, i came to the "select wireless network screen. I've misplaced the WEP password for my internet. Is there anyway to find it on another computer?

i just had a new hard drive installed. After loading everything back on my computer from external drive, i came to the "select wireless network screen. I've misplaced the WEP password for my internet. Is there anyway to find it on another computer?

Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2.

  • I had a new hard drive installed on my IMac.  Now I am trying to find my photos on time machine to restore on Iphoto.  How do you do this?

Hi, I never use TM, but...
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imaging something not being covered there.

  • My Macbook Pro has just had a new hard drive put in it but i still need to install snow leopard without a disk?

My Macbook pro has just had a new 500gb hard drive in it and osx snow leopard had not been put on it because i never got a disk when i bought it. It still comes up with the grey screen with the flashing folder which i think would be normal because there is nothing on the hard drive. How do i install OSX Snow Leopard back on it the cheapest way possible?
    Thanks

You might be in a bind. While is is normal for new Macs that shipped with Lion to omit a system installation DVD, yours was running Snow Leopard. Apple included a system installation CD or DVD for every computer that shipped with every computer through Snow Leopard. Lion was installed on every machine built starting about August 2011, ending the DVD era.
Apparently your computer had been sitting in someone's inventory for a while, but that's no excuse for them to have removed the DVD from its box.
Try booting Lion Internet Recovery. Read this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
I suspect Lion Recovery may not work since "your computer's eligibility for Lion will be verified with Apple" and you appear not to have purchased it.
Please let me know what happens when you attempt to boot Lion Recovery.

  • I just had a new hard drive installed on my iMac

i just had a new hard drive installed on my iMac (due to the Seagate replacement program) i was able to migrate my back up(i think) but its now acting like a new computer and i can't get past the registration screen. I filled everything out but the "continue" button won't highlight and let me cxontinue.

Ah the mac wants to play games..
Ok, You should be able to click on continue twice so to skip it.
What version is the OS you restored? Or did you just perform Migration Assistant on it?

  • IMac, just had repaired new Harddrive erase deverything, wheres my iPhoto n all those apps, i know the gone from hard drive but i thought they would transfer from my phone

iMac, just had repaired new Harddrive erase deverything, wheres my iPhoto n all those apps, i know the gone from hard drive but i thought they would transfer from my phone? HELP ?

Those Apps would not transfer from your iPhone because the iPhone apps are iOS 5 based and the iMac apps are OSX based.  They are not the same Apps.  You will need to transfer the OSX based apps over from your external hardware backup you have kept up, Or you can reinstall the OSX based apps from their original DVD's.
    Hope this helps
