HT201250 I'm using a back-up drive because I need more space.

I have set up time machine, but it keeps saying that it will delete old backups?
If, for example, I wanted to delete my entire iphoto album because it is taking up too much room, will it still be there? Because, with the fact that it updates hourly and states that it will 'delete old back-ups' does that mean that at one point, the 'old back-up' that contains all my photos could disappear? Really need help here!! I'm finding it difficult to explain so if you need more explanation, then please let me know!!

Backups are extra copies of original files, in case there's a problem with the originals.
They are not extra space for the "overflow" that won't fit on your internal HD.
That's true of all backup apps, but since Time Machine does automatically delete things, you should never delete originals intentionally.  Depending on when backups are run, the backup copies may be deleted in as little as 24 hours, or kept for as long as there's room on the backup drive.
For best results, you need another external HD to copy the "overflow" files to, then delete from your Mac's HD.
And have Time Machine back up both your Mac's internal HD and the storage drive.
Be sure to format a storage drive for a Mac, so Time Machine can back it up, per #1 in Using Disk Utility.
To have it backed-up by Time Machine, remove it from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options, by selecting it and clicking the minus sign.
Most files can be just dragged to the storage drive via the Finder.

Apple intentional, use a powered USB hub instead.

How do I remove recovered photos (used photorec to recover lost photos) to have more space in my macbook pro HD?

    Hello there, Shrid.
The following Knowledge Base article reviews how to Sync photos:
    iTunes: Syncing photos
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You will just sync to the new computer. Keep in mind:
    Additional Information
Syncing photos with your device will create an iPod photo cache.
Syncing photos can only happen from one computer or user account at a time. Syncing photos with a different computer or user replaces the photos on the device.
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
Email them from the device to yourself.
Copy them from the emails to your computer.
On iPhone and iPod touch using iOS 5 and iOS 6, all synced photos will appear in a unified category called photo library. Photos are not duplicated; this is a way to view all synced albums in one place. You can also tap a specific album beneath photo library to view individual albums.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro D.

Can external hard drive be hooked up via USB and accessed through atv?
Not without voiding the warranty. No publicly available device is officially supported by that USB port.

    Hello Willlig
If iTunes media is taking up a good majority of space on your computer, you can move it by following the steps in the article below.

  • Can't do back up, says I need more space but i excluded everything

Hi there, I recently had some issues with my iMac. It had a 500GB HD and I was using external 1TB for my backups. I had to do an Archive and install so I had the shop put in a 2TB and transfer over my stuff. So alls good. I had just under 500 GB and I was still able to use my time machine as a backup drive. But I later transferred over a load of movies and files that brings my drive to about 1.5 TB. However in time machine pref I excluded most of these files so it is well under 1 TB for sure if not around the 500 - 600 GB mark. However when I try to o a back up it says "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.57 TB but only 534.56 GB are available" But I exlcuded everything big, when I go to options it tallys up saying in order to do a full back 306.9 GB is required. Any thoughts how to make this thing work cause I hate to not have backups and I don't feel like buying a 2TB external drive. Thanks for any help in advance.

First, never use your TM backup drive to store other files. If you must use a single drive for both storage and backup, then partition the drive with one of those partitions devoted exclusively to TM. That volume should be at least twice the size of your boot volume.
About TM "Backup Drive is Full" Alert
TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

  • Process "deskjet" is using up over 1GB of RAM and over 60GB of VRAM after an hour or so of use. ALSO, "Your startup disk has no more space" error.

The blowers will kick on and I get the: "Your mac os x startup disk has no more space available for application memory." with a list of running apps that aren't going over anything abnormal (Chrome, Finder, Activity Monitor). Quitting any of the applications that appear the dialog continues to pop up. Performance doesn't appear to suffer but the computer definitely acts like it's busy with only a few applications open, however force quitting deskjet slows down the blowers (fans).
I have 20GB remaining on my boot drive. I have also lived several months with less than 5GB remaining and have never seen this error from Mac OS X 10 - 10.8. The only thing different between then and now is the boot drive is a SSD.
I focus on the printer drivers because that's something I can't find anywhere else through Google or Discussion searches. The "startup disk" error has some hits that I have yet to go through completely, although initial results show that it may be a vague bug/leak with SSDs.
(Edit: After clearing up another GB or so and 10 minutes of "deskjet" being killed, it's the longest I've gone without the dialog popping up. Although once I restart that driver will go out of control again).
-Less than a month old clean installation of Mountain Lion 10.8.2
    -Early 2008 MBP
    -SSD bootdrive
    -500GB secondary HDD
    -4GB RAM
-Permissions have been repaired just yesterday.
-SMC and PRAM reset as well, although it won't hurt to do it again when I get back home.

  • Using external back up drive

Is there an app that allows me to use my existing seagate freeagent 1 TB external harddrive as a backup I can sync with?
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    J

sync with in what regard, what use.
You can use same as a time machine backup, or an external data archive, etc.
you can have it connected to the back of the NEWEST airport extreme as TM backup.
    More specifics needed.
You can use your hard drive as a backup or archive in many ways as mentioned here:

  • I need more space to make my windows 7 partition. Can I make that partition on a USB flash drive so I can use it when I want and still have my full ssd when I don't? Do you guys know of any ways to do this?

I am considering buying a 128 gb MacBook air and I will need to make a windows partition. I would like to be able to use all of my ssd do I was wondering if I could put my windows partition on a small USB flash drive to use when I want to. Do you know if any programs or techniques capable of this?

Csound1 What Ive been trying to explain is that I have been running bootcamp, I open the app where the first screen is the introduction, i hit continue, the first time I select "download the latest windows support software fromm Apple" then I return and instead select "Install Windows 7." Then hit continue. The third screen is where I "Create a Partition for Windows" I set Windows to 80 gigs then hit INSTALL. As stated before Bootcamp cannot find the install drivers saying "The installer disc could not be found." My windows software is on a USB drive not a disc, I tried using a virtual disc reader to make it appear that the windows software was running on a disc, still no luck. What I would like to know is how to install windows on bootcamp.

  • When using Outlook 11 in a OSX Lion, how can I relocate the email folders and contacts to my hard drive. Not as a backup, but to receive all my incoming emails and new contacts directly to my external hard drive? I need that space in my mac internal HD.

Can somebody help me please? I will very much appreciate it!!!

The files that weren't inside the media folder on the original machine need to be copied over to exactly the same paths as they had on the source machine. See this thread for an ongoing discussion of a similar problem. See also this post on migrating the iTunes library.

  • My I Phone is a 4 s, and I came with 5 mb of I cloud storage, my phone won't back up because I needed more storage or delete data. What data am I supposed to deleted? I have dumped everything off my phone, so I'm not sure what it is trying to back up.

I have an i phone 4s, It comes with 5 mb of free i cloud back up. It has not been able to back up, due to not enough storage, it saying I need to delete data, what data? I have dumped everything so I am confused.. I buckled an bought 10 more mb and it is backing up right now for like another 23 hours...what exactly is it backing up since I dumped all pics, and texts messages? How can I prevent this in the future? oh I only have like 2 mb of music onn there as well..and it was saying I still had 5 mb avaliable to use on the cloud last night..I'm so confused...

Is it saying that there is not enough free space to backup to your computer?  If so, make sure you have enough available hard drive space to back up your iPhone.  If you do, a backup file on your computer is corrupted.  The best way to resolve this problem is:
NOTE: This method will erase any and all backups iTunes has made of your iPhone from your computer. It should not erase the data on your iPhone, just the backup files that iTunes creates on your computer.
Launch iTunes, Go to iTunes>Preferences, then click on the Devices tab, select all of the backups made of your iPhone.  Then click "Delete Backup...".

  • I need more space on my drive

I am running out of space on my system drive.  I'd like to move all video, audio and photos to an new 1 TB external drive.  Some questions:
Should I buy a Firewire 800 or USB 2.0 drive?
Can anyone point me to instructions on how to move FCPX events and projects to the new drive?  Is it as simple as just moving those folders to the new drive?
How does FCPX know where to find the new files?
Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

In addition to Tom's comments, if you're getting into video editing, get the biggest and fastest external HD you can afford. In other words, bigger than you think you need. You'll soon fill it up.
If your work is important, you really need a second drive to back up to. Hard drives fail from time to time, unfortunately.

  • HT3986 I'm having trouble partitioning my hard drive, I'm attempting to do this from the recovery drive because it's more convenient.  But when it gets about halfway through the process, there's an error message saying that it's having trouble unmounting

Just realized that the title was limited anyways, I'm in the recovery drive on my macbook pro, trying to partition my macbook with another user (not windows, just another user) with only like 10GB.  It goes fine until it's about halfway done with the process, where it freaks out and tells me that it can't unmount the harddrive. Any suggestions?

    Hi, BDAqua,
Nice to hear from you. You helped me with another recent question. Thank you.
The external case is Other World Computing's Mercury Elite Pro with Oxford chip set. Drive is an Hitachi deskstar 500 Gigabyte disk (I'll dig around for exact specs, if needed).
Weird thing is that the drive (partitioned into two disks, one boot, one for files) shows up in the Finder and in Disk Utility, but not in System Profiler. It's not visible at all there (not under Firewire, by which method it is connected, nor anywhere else). I can access its files, though, via Finder.
    Very strange.
