I am thinking about buying my wife a IPHONE 5C , She has a IPAD . My question is I have always bought from Apple Store before this. I am with Verizon for other phones and Hotspot. It seems like I come out ahead by buying from Verizon as far as minimum GB
I would still like to use Genius Bar and group sessions at Apple store . Can a person do this if you buy from Verison ?

If you haven't purchased your iPhone then yes, you can. Be sure to mention that you want AppleCare+. If they don't know anything about it, leave the store and order through Apple's website. Some of those VZW salespeople are anything but geniuses...

Sorry, without knowing the Apple ID/Password that was originally used to activate this phone, then there is no way to re-activate it, as you've found out.
Apple can't/won't help you. Your choice is to get this info, or you simply won't be able to re-activate this phone.

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.

In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. Your question has been answered. Jailbreaking cannot be discussed here. If you buy a phone locked to a carrier, it would be down to them to unlock it, and that's very unlikely if you've only just got the phone. Locked phones are "cheap" for a reason - you're signing up for a contract and that subsidises the cost of the phone.

And AppleCare isn't one of the "accessories" Verizon seems to let you order with the phone. So wouldn't this mean it's impossible to order it from Verizon and get AppleCare?

It's all very confusing to me, I need some answers from experienced customers.

I already checked. I purchased my iPhone 3G on the launch date back in July '08. I've paid the bill the day my bill was issued, days ahead of its due date, and for some reason, even through it's magic 8-ball wisdom, said I was not eligible for and upgrade. Not till Dec. of this year at least.

Under the out of warranty replacement program, you get an iPhone identical to the one you are replacing...same color, same storage capacity, locked to the same carrier if it is carrier specific. You will have to activate it for use with Verizon just like it was done with the old iPhone.

First, you're not talking to Apple here -- we're users just like you who try to help others, Apple employees rarely participate.
If you bought an iPhone from Best Buy 6 months ago it was locked to a particular carrier. You cannot unlock such a phone -- the only way to get an unlocked iPhone is to buy an officially unlocked one, but that's not what you have.

In Australia, with a post-paid account I can have my carrier unlock the phone for free so I can use the phone on a pre-paid account in the States when I am there.
My carrier here gets paid regardless as I am on a 24-month contract.
