HT202234 Suspicious spyware alert telling me to call (877)6901356 is this legitimate? (supposedly from safari)

The other day I clicked on a seemingly innocuous page, it was the first option when I typed in something researching for my history paper (it was something to do with slavery in brazil). Anyhow an alert came up saying spyware may be active on my computer and my personal details are in danger etc and sited my IP address.
It told me to phone (877)6901256 and it would not close, I ended up having to restart my computer to get rid of the alert. I then googled the number and found nothing about it. Has anyone else had this before or can anyone shed any light on whether this is some sort of scam or whether it is a legitimate message from safari that there may be some malicious spyware active on my computer?
Any help much appreciated.

This is malware scam. Do not click on any links or call any telephone numbers. If they persist:

In that case, you should consider your computer to have been compromised. The people who had control are scammers, and they may have done all manner of things, including installing keyloggers or leaving back doors into your system. The only possible way to fix this is to erase the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch. See:
How to reinstall Mac OS X from scratch
If you gave them a credit card number as well, you should report this to your credit card company.

I received an alert supposedly from Safari about 2 viruses which should be removed and was given a phone number to call.  Is this legitimate?

No. Do not phone them. You will find them trying to sell you expensive and useless (and probably dangerous) virus removal software. There are no viruses in the wild (i.e. outside laboratories) affecting Macs.

  • When my husband calls my iPad it makes no noise to alert me he's calling

When my husband calls my iPad from his it makes no noise to alert me he's calling.

This has been reported from time to time by others.  Is the email address she is calling also the e mail adres of any other device?  Are you sharing an e mail address?   ( assuming you have volume turned up, and not muted)
You might get a second e mail address (gmail works good). And use that dress as an additional 'recieve at' adres in settings for face time.  See if that wakes up you pad.

  • I can't get skype to alert me of incoming calls/videos/messages on my apple device

I can't get skype to alert me of incoming calls/videos/messages on my apple device, unless I have the app open in front of me.I have tried to contact different microsoft help desks. I have checked all my settings and have looked at all the help forums available and now am turning to you.Isn't it possible to be notified of incomming calls/videos/messages when my phone is in standby mode? Any help?

I'll assume you have allowed notifications from Skype turned on both in the device settings and in the app settings.
The only other thing I can suggest is checking that the conversations have not been muted by the app (go into the conversation, tap ..., tap notifications and make sure notifications are on) as the iPad version has a nasty habit of doing this without warning.

  • Getting warnings from safari about spyware and adware ?

My iMac just popped up a screen while i was in pintrest and froze . It had on it a warning about spyware and possible adware, virus in my computer.
It also read to call a 1-888 number to rectify this issue. This also stated it was from safari (windows)
    Has anybody experienced this?

What do you think of this Adwaremedic? It is saying that my firefox has a problem and that I should turn off my com and reboot
It sounds like AdwareMedic probably found a variant of Conduit (aka Trovi, aka SearchProtect) on your computer, in which case it will give you a warning that Firefox may have been compromised. This is a generic warning, and it will be given whether you have Firefox installed or not. (That's something I've been meaning to change, but haven't gotten around to it yet.)
As for why it's telling you to reboot, some of the items that were removed must require a reboot in order to fully disable and remove them. If AdwareMedic tells you to reboot after removing adware, you should do so. Choose Restart from the Apple menu.

I received an email from Verizon telling me that my account is locked and to click on a link Verizon/security to unlock it.  Is this a legitimate email from Verizon.  How can I find out what this means?  My phone is working.

I have never heard of that before, if Verizon Wireless would do anything with your account they would be calling you (removed). In my opinion you should disregard the email.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

First, I would recommend repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility.
If that doesn't fix the problem, there's a very dangerous command you can execute in the Terminal.  This is very hazardous, because a simple typo can result in very drastic consequences.  I have seen people erase their entire hard drive by putting a space in the wrong place!  So, please follow the directions I'm going to give you very carefully!
Open the Terminal, which is found in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.  In the Terminal, enter the following:
    sudo rm -f
Make sure to put a space after the "-f"!  Then, drag the troublesome file from the Finder and drop it on the Terminal window.  That should insert the path to the file in the command.  Then go back to the Terminal and press return.  You will be asked for your password, and when you type it, nothing will be shown as a security measure.  Press return again after entering your password.  The file should be deleted.

Since you don’t allow emails any more – I suspect because of the numerous complaints with your service and the way you treat people that you don’t want documented, I am calling and I want this call recorded for future reference.
I have been a long time faithful customer of vzw and although the past year I have been late on payments many times and really couldn’t afford your exorbitant prices for services lots of other companies offer sometimes three times cheaper than what you charge, I have hung in there trying my best to meet my obligations.
This month has been no exception. You don’t know the background; the whole story of people’s lives. I know you could care less because all you care about is the profit-the money that comes in.
I was told when I agreed to pay my bill on the third per the recorded message that I had 14 days to pay…you cut me off anyway. The phones are not the tissue; your suspending my service means I cannot work. I may lose my job…how do you justify that? In any case? The least you could do would be to keep 4986 on and cut the phones off. But no. You refuse to compromise and meet the basic needs of your customer. What does that say about your company? I tried to call back on three separate occasions to tell you I couldn’t pay because of unexpected expenses but couldn’t get out of the automated system…sadly couldn’t get to a real person which also speaks volumes to me.
All this tells me this is a company I don’t wish to be affiliated with any more. As soon as I can, I will discontinue service with you…I know you could care less. I will honor the remaining portion of the contract but that’s it. You don’t deserve my business. I am a good, hardworking person who, at the sacrifice of myself and my needs, always pays her bills…albeit late at times. I realize others tell you stories and lies to justify themselves. That’s not me. If you knew what I had been through the last 7 yrs you would marvel that I am  still on my feet…don’t judge too quickly. You could be wrong…and in my eyes you are by doing this to me.
God will see us through this extremely scary time of that I have no doubt. No thanks to your company and lack of understanding and mercy. I am doing the best I can. Sadly you are not.
See I have choices. MANY choices of providers for services you offer. I don’t have to be treated like this. I don’t have to succumb to your coldness and callousness. I intend to choose better (and cheaper). If your company doesn’t get the “people factor” back you will be sorry.

Problem here is you admit you cannot afford the service.
And you want to blame Verizon for losing a job because you have no cell phone.
If your job depends on that phone I would pay it on time every time if you need a job to pay your bill.
No other service is going to treat you any different. And if you cannot afford Verizon's monthly invoice how are you going to afford new devices, activation fees, possible security deposits on any other cellular carrier? You can't.
Also if you made an arraignment to pay and then decide you cannot do so, why should Verizon extend you service or credit, or why is it you want to use the service and data and not pay for it as agreed.
Get a prepay phone. Its evident the cost is too high for you to afford on post pay.
    Good Luck
