HT203254 NVIDIA failure

It appears that my Macbook Pro was manufactured in august 2007.
Serial number: W87340ZAX91
I bought it on e-bay in april 2011.
The original receipt was thrown away when normal warranty expired, nobody was aware at the time of the NVIDIA issue to come.
Can I still benefit from a repair free of charge as described below? Thanks
"Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within four years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty."
Thanks

Not sure - we're just users here - but you could always ask about Apple's flat rate repair pricing. For less than $350, you'd have a 'like new' computer.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • HT203254 nVIDIA chip failures and Macbooks

    All
I bought a macbook in 2009 (aluminium) and the logic board failed and was replaced in 2010.  It has failed again and I have been quoted £300 for a repair.
Does the free logic board replacement initiative (because of NVIDIA chip issues) cover my laptop which is less than 3 years old as I obviously have the same/similar problem?  I can only find references to macbook pros.
    Regards

As fellow users all we can to is refer to the announced coverage, which doesn't add to what you already know.  Logically one would think coverage would extend to a replacement board if it uses the same chip set as the ones being replaced...logic does not always work in business, though.  Best answer would come from Apple, press the issue with your history.  Try contacting the Apple UK, since you talk about cost in pounds, and see what they say.  The overall Apple contact information is: http://www.apple.com/contact if the UK source doesn't help.

  • HT203254 NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

The official Apple program regarding the Graphics Display: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT has ended since December 7th 2012
Today, February 19th  2013 I still have that same problem, and don't know what I can do.
    I have a MacBook Pro.
Anyone has any ideas? Apple, do you think it's normal to end a program like this when you still have users with the same problem?

Only Apple know how much it will cost but from what I have read there are 2 options, that is IF Apple will even fix it now.
    1) To replace the Logic board is somewhere around $400 if done locally at an Apple store.
    2) It can be sent to an Apple Repair Facility/Depot and be completely refurbished for something like $320. Unless they find more damage then that $320 will cover.
But since the system is now 5 years old (Not from date of purchase but Model years) Apple stops all support for system 5 years old and older. Only an Apple store and or the facility/depot would know if your system is to old for them to fix it or not.
    Good Luck & Best Wishes.

    Thank you Shootist007,
I'll take care of it on my own then. That ***** since Apple had an official program.
It will cost me no less than 250 usd I presume.

  • Regarding nvidia failure in laptop

hiii i am also suffering from the nvidia problem of hp laptop but they don't have any step which give any satisfaction to us i apply to all those customers who are facing this problem we can make a community and sue against the hp in consumer forum..........

While HP and other laptop OEM's are caught up in it all the problem is really down to Nvidia or rather their designs and TSMC manufacturing yields of G94 GPU's. On the other hand some laptops have their GPU's die due to poor BGA soldering. In the case of Nvidia it's more the fact that the layer of silicon of which the G94 GPU is made may seperate thus fail.
Sony was also at blame some years ago with failing memory slots soldering in their GRX and GRT series laptops.

  • HT203254 NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors

How much does this repair cost now that Apple is no longer covering the expense?

the GPU is soldered on the logic board. you would need to buy a new logic board.

  • [GAVE UP] Failure to initialize graphics device [Thinkpad 530W,Nvidia]

    Hello,
I fail to use `nvidia` as graphics driver for my xorg on a Thinkpad 530W laptop using Nvidia Quadro 2000M and intel graphics card. Using instead `intel` or `vesa` work. This following logs are with optimus enabled, but I tried the same things with only the nvidia graphics card enabled in the bios and I also fail to load the nvidia driver.
    I followed the advice at
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … IA_Optimus
for xorg not to be confused by the presense of two graphics cards.
Do you have any ideas how I get the nvidia card to run? Should I try Bumblebee? But can this even help if already only the nvidia card by itself makes problem? Do you need any more information?
    Thanks, for any advice,
    Holger
This is a fresh install on a new laptop and I am new to Arch (but with Linux for a long time).

I decided to use nouveau instead of nvidia and now I got my external an internal display working.

  • Nvidia 8600 GPU failure no longer covered?

Is anyone else getting denied for coverage on Nvidia GPU failures? I went into the Apple Store today, and they confirmed a Nvidia failure, but said it was not covered anymore. Does anyone else get confirmation, but no coverage, eventhough they got $200 million from Nvidia?

There are many comments about the NVIDIA GPU issue and Apple not replacing the GPU.  I will say I had good success in getting Apple to replace mine in my Macbook Pro. When my computer suddenly would not fully turn on, I researched the issue to find out the possible reasons and then somewhat dawdled in taking it in. It was 2 weeks past the 4-year GPU warranty window. But I had had problems for some time preceding when it wouldn't fully turn on, such as geo designs appearing on the screen and the screen going dark, and those issues did occur at least a month or more before my warranty ended. I had no idea what those issues meant and simply ignored them until the computer wouldn't fully turn on.
The good folks at The Apple store in Austin initially said no luck; yes it's the GPU but it's two weeks past the warranty. But then they kindly relented because clearly the symptoms I described to them that occurred during the warranty were caused by the faulty GPU. How would I know this was the issue?  They replaced the logic board at no cost. I've seen comments here that a Genius said the problem was the logic board, not the GPU, and therefore Apple would not make the repair. I was told by my Genius that the GPU is partof the logic board, and therefore the logic board needed replacing. This was a $526 repair that I was grateful Apple took care of. I would not have made the repair and would have gone out and bought a new non-Apple computer with a warranty.
When I got my computer back, I checked it before I left the Apple store and it was running slow. I ended up paying Apple to replace the hard drive, so ultimately I did pay for an Apple repair. But I'm a happy rather than disappointed Apple customer because of the free GPU repair. Happy, devoted customers has made Apple a great company, and it should be worth it to the company to fix the faulty GPUs that are close to warranty to keep customers and keep them happy.

  • T61p & the Nvidia Problem......

So I've been wanting a thinkpad for awhile now..... I finally purchased one on ebay yesterday; a  t61p... But, RIGHT after I paid for it, I started finding stuff out about the Nvidia failure problems.... and of course the one I got has a NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (& I thought I was getting one with a nicer gpu than the others I was considering in the same price range)........ This is such a disappointment. I was so excited about finally getting a thinkpad.. Do you think I should just resell it right away, and get one with a intel GPU instead??   I know that if I keep the one with the nvidia gpu, it will fail sooner or later, and I don't have the money to buy another one......  This one that I got, isn't under warranty as far as I know.. And Lenovo still isn't replacing them without warranties, right? ...I've heard of a few cases of them replacing some that weren't under warranty any longer, but that is rare from what I understand........Which isn't fair.. if one person gets a replacement, everyone should.

    To the Lenovo community:
I have a T61 with the nVidia quadro 140M graphics card.  Yesterday, I was surfing the internet when the screen suddenly froze and there was a tint of yellow.  I was not using the laptop's LCD display; I was using an external monitor.  Thinking that the laptop had froze, I powered the computer off and turned it back on.
I noticed the splash screen was garbled and fuzzy.  After watching Vista load (the green bar that scrolls from left to right), there was no further image.  I powered off my laptop.  Thinking the VGA-out port was broken, I disconnected my laptop from my external monitor to see it that was the case.  However, when I turned my laptop back on, I could not even see the Thinkpad splash screen.  All I saw was a three inch bar of blue on the far left, a three inch bar of red in the middle, and lots of vertical lines flickering.  I suspected the graphics card was broken.
I called the Lenovo support center in Atlanta where the customer rep told me it was not the graphics card but instead that the LCD cable and display on the laptop was broken and needed to be repaired.  Since I was out of warranty, it would cost $750.  I told him that with that kind of money I could buy a new laptop...
I had a feeling that it was the graphics card and not the LCD cable and display.  I continued turning it on and off to see what would happen.  The native LCD display could not display anything, but via the VGA-out to my external monitor, I could see things.  The "best" result I could get was to get into the ThinkVantage Rescue and Discovery program (via the blue button during startup).  But even in this state the whole screen was riddled with blue patches.  Additionally, during startup, after the Thinkpad splash screen I would see the whole screen covered with strange symbols.  For instance, smiley faces, the male sign (circle and arrow), and "wv" all over the screen.
I now suspected the nVidia quadro 140M, with the overheating issue, was at fault.  Furthermore, I had read online (using another computer), board messages on this website about similar problems.
I turned the computer off and let it cool down overnight.  Sure enough, this morning, when I powered it back on, the display was normal.  This meant that it was not the LCD cable/display at fault. The native LCD display was normal, and the display on the external monitor was normal.  However, after 15 minutes, the screen freezes, the colors change, and then the display goes black and the computer restarts.
I called the Lenovo support center where the rep who took my call agreed that it was a graphics card problem.  However to fix it would be $570... I asked him if there was any other recourse because the graphics card did not break because of overuse, but failed from being poorly manufactured by nVidia. This is a problem that the company publicly acknowledged. I was informed that there was no other method to remedy the situation.
I am severely disappointed in the recent turn of events.  Aside from the graphics card, the T61 I own is perfectly fine and I do not want to abandon it.  Furthermore, I was disappointed that I was first told that it was a LCD cable/display problem when it clearly was not.  Have other members with this problem found a satisfying solution from Lenovo?  Is there anything else I can do to fix this issue?
Fortunately, my data is still fine, but I had chosen a Thinkpad for my most recent laptop because I had read that it was superior to other laptop brands (and thus, I did not elect to renew my warranty).  While in hindsight I would most certainly have extended my warranty, this recent experience has soured the reputation of Lenovo in my eyes.

  • MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4) Failure To Open

I cannot turn on My MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4) When I took it to a technician he said he needs Bios for my MacBook Pro. Where can i get it? Please help

First suggestion is to never go back to that Technician, he knows nothing about Apple computers.
Mac computers do not use a BIOS, they use a Firmware, EFI, and there is no way to get into it.
You can get a Firmware reinstall disc, CD, from Apple for your system but I seriously doubt that is why your system is  not booting.
From the type of Intel CPU installed in your system it is more then likely a late 2007 or early 2008 model that is more then likely one of these described in this article.

  • Another nvidia problem

I know that there are few topics about nvidia failures after upgrade, but I think my problem is somewhat different and weird.
I was using nvidia-beta driver for some time (really old one, older than current nvidia stable) and recently I updated to nvidia stable package. But Xorg freezes with black screen after start.

The only solution I think is to manually edit PKGBUILD and install the old one working driver.

    Dont be feeling too embarrassed
We've all taken the step of "lets learn something" by subscribing first to Linux and then to Arch.
It can be quite a steep learning curve but there are plenty of folks here happy to help, especially as your question was formed in a good way.
Mainly you tried to help yourself by researching the manual and forums first then, when stuck, clearly stated your problem, what steps you've taken so far and any error messages chucked out by the system. And you were courteous enough to come back and say you sorted it, despite any (unwarranted)  feelings you may look a bit of a berk.

oh and btw, welcome to Arch and the Arch community

My macbook pro won't turn on. I press the power button and the little light on the bottom goes white only while I hold it down, the second i don't it goes off. When I do hold it down for a few seconds first it will be solid for like 3 seconds then start flickering

Hi, I have an Early 2008 Macbook Pro and I used it this morning but two hours later, I found it off. When I push the power button, the white light briefly comes on but it doesn't sound like it's starting up. When I hold the power button down, the white light comes on solid for about 5 seconds, then flashes rapidly. During this time I can hear the DVD drive and other components kick on, but once the rapid flashing stops, all power is lost again
The problem: Mac will not turn on.
    1. If I hit the power button it is trying to start working (white light is blinking, HDD rotating, CD noise and so on), but gets shutdown as soon as I release my finger from the power button.
    2. The maximum "Working" time is about 5 secs. During this time fans are working, white light is lighting, HDD working, CD does its usual noise. At the last two seconds white light starts flickering.
    3. If I remove all memory slots it is working as usual!!!, I mean working without pressing a powerbutton constantly... and asking for a memory of course.
How it happened: well, it is usual thing then you are in hurry. Accidentally I hit restart. I didnt want mac to load again, so I did a force shutdown (5 secs an a power button). Thats it.
What I tried to do: I did all those "shaman" hotkeys to restart SMC. I spent a day!!! by driving around my city and asking Apple providers to fix it with no luck.
What I am planing to do:
    1. I have an Apple service center here in the Tallinn who are ready to do some diagnostics. The only thing is - I dont trust them my HDD. So I am gonna clone my hard drive data somethere before they get my mac in their hands.
    2. As soon as diagnistics is done I will get a price offer to fix it. It definitely wont be a cheap, since my mac is year and two months old (funny, two months and you are screwed).
    3. If it will be too expencive I gonna do DIY repair.
What I would like to say to the Apple: please investigate that problem. The motherboard is definitely working. I can not fix it myself with no necessary equipments here, so I have to do expensive motherboard logic purchase.

    Hi rightturn,
    Thanks for replying.
I am still not sure about the success story. According to the http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/MacBookProvideofailure.html topic and comments you have to have "chime" sound and numlock (or capslock ???) button to work. Those two are the main criterias to pass the nvidia failure test.
Another thing is the USB which is should be powered on as well.
As you could see on the youtube video this macbook does not have chime, and keyboard seems does not work too.
So... will see what happens next after the weekends I am gonna call them for an updates.

  • MacBook Pro Exchange and Repair Extension Programs

    Hi:
I have a MacBook Pro Early 2008, and I think my laptop problem is the Nvidia Card. My laptop doesn't start. I can't hear the chime at startup, but I can hear the DVD and the HD spinning, and the fans working. I phoned the nearest Apple mervice and they said me that it is imperative that my computer is running so they can perform the test that determines whether the problem of my computer is covered by the Exchange and Repair Extension Programs "or distorted video no video issues". I have told them that's impossible, because the  logic board defect causes a impossibility to boot the laptop.
Can anyone tell me if it's true that the Apple Service says to me? How they intend I start my laptop?
    Thanks in advance.
    (Sorry for my english)

Thanks a lot for your reply.
    But...
Why are you so sure that the Nvidia failure does not prevent the computer start-up. The laptop has worked flawlessly so far.
In some forums I read that the cause of the boot failure is just the defective nvidia board. First I had some screen flickering problems, and the latest  problems are screen blackouts, this seems that the boot failure is the last symptom of a defective board.
In any case, I find it's a kind of surreal nightmare that Apple launch a replacement program, and deny coverage for units that have been rendered useless because the problem that justifies the replacement program. Doesn't have Apple the serial numbers of the units that can be affected by a problem that Nvidia recognize?
    Anyway, thanks again

  • MacBook Pro Blank Screen (Built - in & External) - continued

This thread is a continuation of [MacBook Pro Blank Screen (Built - in & External)|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1478474]. The thread was getting too long and some browsers were timing out.
    Thank you,
    Apple Discussions Staff

I brought mine into the Apple Store last night. I had not left it for service last time as I had not cleared it of some confidential client data. This time, I encountered a much more knowledgeable Genius who seemed to have heard of the Nvidia problem.
So, my MBPro is on its way to the depot. It will apparently be $310 total, flat fee, supposedly ready within a week.
I do expect Apple will do the right thing eventually and extend warranties for the defective Nvidia subsystem. However, I can't wait until they do. I need my Macbook Pro to be functional.
    Again, my strong advice...
*At the first hint you are getting this problem, turn on screen sharing.*
If you have this specific Nvidia problem, you will still be able to access the machine remotely, which can be incredibly valuable in terms of saving data before you send it for repair. When you hand it over, you will initial a statement saying you have backed up your data and Apple is not responsible if the machine is wiped during repairs. Set up screen sharing so you can operate the machine during the Nvidia failure.

  • Gaming in Bootcamp gets slower

    Hi there,
i experienced this with Bioshock, Crysis and lately with Crysis Warhead: After playing for about an hour the framarate drops noticable. After quitting and restarting after 3-5 minutes the framerate is back to normal. I use Vista64 in Bootcamp for gaming on a MBP 2.6 with 4GB RAM and a 320GB HDD. Has anyone experienced somthing similar or has a solution to this?
    thanks in advance.

this is a problem a have too!
but it doesn't happen via boot camp but under osx, with doom and quake4.
I thought was a doom problem but last night I tried quake4 and is the same!
after half hour of gaming I need to restart otherwise I can't play anymore.
this is strange and not OS related.
Is this due to nVidia firmware that slows down card clock to avoid the famous nVidia failures?

  • Motherboard for T61

I have a T61, 6465-CTO with a bad motherboard. The motherboard that is listed for this unit is the 42W7651 having the Intel GM965 chip. I would like to replace it with a 43Y9048 motherboard with the Nvidia video. (I can buy this board for about $100 less!) I believe this is possible. Are there any pitfalls to watch out for? Would the Centrino duo CPU I now have be compatible with this board and would the display be compatible? Thanks for your help.

    Hi andysz,
    Welcome to the Lenovo forum.
I'd suggest having a look at the T61 Hardware Maintenance Manual. I think the heatsink/fan (HSF) assembly is probably different for the Nvidia vs. the Intel system board. If you're buying just the system board itself (usually the case), the HSF from your Intel board might not work with the Nvidia one.
But before you spend any more time on your project, I'd encourage you to Google "nvidia failure" or similar. There are many threads such as this one on NBR about problems with the generation of Nvidia GPUs used in the T61 (everywhere they were used, not just in ThinkPads.)
If you need a faster GPU than the Intel one on your old system board, I'd recommend looking for a new laptop rather than putting an older Nvidia in your T61.
OTOH maybe you're aware of the potential for trouble and have a reason for wanting the Nvidia anyway?
    Best regards,
    Frank
