  • My mac mini hard drive crashed. I replaced it but now not all applications work. How do I fix this?

When my mac mini (late 2009) hard drive crashed I installed a new one. During the process I used migration assistant to bring in my time machine backup. When finished I did not have all applications...iPhoto, CC Cleaner, Chrome, and most importantly Reunion all failed to load. I have since manuay fixed Chrome and CC Cleaner but still do not have Renion or the OSX iPhoto and other apple OSX applications working. Can someone help or driect me to the right forum?

Restore failed to provide all the applications and data. Took the mini to Apple genius today. They reinstalled OSX (same as I had done) then confirmed that the applications were not backed up to time machine...they will be in the future. After reloading each individual application they now work as expected and all the data seems to have been restored. Except the Reunion files which were near and dear. These are gone forever. Somehow, perhaps through my negligence, the 'GED' files were not stored in a "Reunion" folder and were not backed up...much like the apps. Now I'm trying to recover the files from the crashed drive.

  • Can I sync from iPad to a Mac as hard drive crashed and data lost

My iMac hard drive crashed and the data cannot be recovered. Can I sync the iTunes data on my iPad or iPhone back onto the new hard drive?

You should be able to recover data that is in the backup. That does not included some items like music. See the following for what is in the backup:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4079
First in iTunes preferences check the box for prevent automatic syncing when a device is connected.
They connect your iPod to the computer and transfer iTunes purchases to the computer. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
Then right click on the iPad listed under Devices in the left hand side and click on "Back Up". After backup is complete I think you will have to restore the iPad from backup to complete the process of using your iPad to the "new" computer.

  • Mac mini hard drive crashed. The ecovery drive only offers to reinstall mavericks on the recovery drive. Doesn't see the hard drive. What can I do?

Hi, I have a mid-2011 with Mavericks installed. It crashed. I can boot into recovery mode. And it shows me the name of the hard drive and the recovery partition. When I boot back to the hard drive, it gives the grey screen and a long progress bar. WHen the progress bar eventually fills up, the computer just shuts down. In recovery mode, Disk Utility says the hard disk cannot be repaired.
But when I try to re-install Mavericks from the Recovery Partition, it only shows the recovery partition as the destination, not the rest of the computer.
    Not sure what to do.
Thanks if anyone has any advice.
    J

Thank you very much for the reply.
Indeed, Disk Utility can't even erase and reformat the drive. It's toast.
This is very disappointing. Second Mac Mini I've had go out this year. First seems to be a logic board issue. Now the hard drive on the newer machine.
At least I was able to use Disk Drill to get photos and other important files off the Mini. I had a Time Capsule, but last year, it too died (just a few months out of warranty).
One further question, if you don't mind. If I'm just going to replace the HD on the mini, I'm not sure why one would do this step that you suggested: "get a new HD, put it in an enclosure or use another method that allows the HD to be connect to the Min. Then boot to the recovery partition and install Mavericks on the new HD."
Also, maybe I can replace the drive on the mini myself. Maybe get an SSD for it? They seem more reliable.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer me.

  • Stream back to mac post hard drive crash?

The hard drive on my work MacBook Pro crashed a week ago. I have some movie files, and photo files on the apple tv from the old one. Unfortunately, I had not backed up these files yet, so don't have them on my new hard drive.
I'm afraid to sync my new itunes library to the apple tv for fear of it deleting all files on it. Will that happen, or will the files sync back onto my new hard drive?
    Thanks.

You are indeed correct to be cautious about carrying out a sync, syncing to your new computer will erase the contents of the tv. If the files are valuable to you (photos, home movies etc) and you are willing to void the warranty on the tv you could remove the HDD to do so. If you are not at all comfortable with such actions, consider taking the tv to a data recovery specialist who has some experience with macs.

  • Clone Mac Book hard drive onto Mac Mini

    Hi All,
I own a 2009 MacBook Pro and have very recently bought a Mac Mini.
I would like to clone the MacBook Pro's hard drive onto the Mac Mini, so that, when switching it on, the Mini is an exact replicate of the MacBook Pro, including all content, software and other bits.
I own an external hard drive that is large enough to contain all of the MacBook Pro's data.
Could someone help me in describing the detailed procedure for me to clone the drive as desired?
    Thank you.

Unfortunately, this will not work as you won't be able to boot the Mini because Macs cannot boot from an OS version older than what they came with (I assume the Mini is running Mountain Lion or mavericks?). You can, however, transfer your files, etc.
FWIW, please update your profile: you are not running iOS on the Mini as iOS is for iDevices, not computers.

  • I want to partition my Mac Book hard drive into 3 Partitions

I am running Mac 10.4.9 and want to partition my machine, I guess I can use the Mac OS install CD
I have with me, can some one provide some instructions on how this can be done.

why is partitioning not supported for Tiger.
Good question, but all I can say is that built in Disk handling & repair has always been quite limited on Macs.
Mac OS install disks come with a disk utility which can do the job, but I found none.
Not sure what you found none of!? Disk Utility is on the Install Disk...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
But you still don't want to partition it if possible, and those two APPs means there is absolutely no need to.

  • Render Files Are Being Saved onto My Mac Book Hard Drive...?

    Hi All -
So, I was highly curious as to why I have such little disk space on the hard drive on my Mac Book Pro and discovered that there is a file called "Render Files" on my hard drive which contains an enormous amount of video footage from movies I've edited in FCP.
I don't understand why these files are going into my hard drive...? I have an external My Book connected to my computer. In FCP under System Settings, on the Scratch Book tab, Video Capture, Video Render and Audio Render are all checked off and to the right of this my My Book is listed. So I thought everything would be going into my My Book external drive.
However, I looked into My Book and noticed that there is a file that says Capture Scratch that seems to have all of the captured footage of these movies. So, I'm thoroughly confused as to what this "Render Files" file is doing on my hard drive and how can I just get all video footage to automatically store on my external My Book drive. I'm afraid that if I delete the files in the "Render Files" that I'm going to create a real disaster.
Any advice or clarification on this would be most appreciated.
    Thanks so much!

    Hi -
Couple of options for you to consider:
Open the Render Folder that you have found on your internal hard drive and sort the files by date. Are the files recent / from the current project that you are working on?
If they are then I would go to
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
download Preference Manager and trash your preferences. This will cause you to lose your current preferences, favorites, etc., which you will have to manually reset - but often clears up strange behavior in FCP. I would then go back and reset my Scratch Disk settings to the external drive.
Is there at Render Files folder on your external drive? Open that and sort be date and see if your current project render files are there.
If they are, that would mean the render files you found on your internal drive are from projects prior to you assigning the files to your external drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac Book Hard Drive upgrade

What will be a good brand or what brand does apple use for a late 2008 Mac Book Pro I wanted to update the one on my computer with a 500 GB. HD since it has a 320 GB HD.
Second question can I use the 320 GB HD from my Mac Book Pro and update my Mac mini with it?

were you looking for the 5400rpm or 7200rpm?
I have the 500gb, 7200 seagate which has worked fine. no clicking or anything. temp wise, I think it's much cooler than the 250gb factory Hitachi that I replaced.
if you have an Intel Mini, the old MBP drive will work fine as an upgrade.

  • How to remove and destroy Mac Book hard drive

I have an old MacBook no longer working, won't even fire up.  I wish to dispose of it but even though it is not working I would like to make sure everything on it is wiped.  So I guess I need to remove the hard drive and smash it? How do I remove it?

I would remove the cover and find the drive..... I have not done that myself, so I have no detailed suggestion.

  • My hard drive crashed. Should I replace it myself?

My last question posted about an hour ago helped me realize my hard drive on my mid-2009 13" MBP died. So now the question, should I just replace the hard drive myself? I am fairly comfortable around computers and have opened the computer and replaced the memory in the past without issue. The steps to replace the actual drive seem quite straight forward. The issue I have is how to restore the operating system and information. I have Time Capsule with a USB drive attached to it. All of my data is either backed up to the Time Capsule or the attached drive. I realize there are applications I will need to probably hand install and I am fine with that. But how do I check or know that my Time Capsule backup is sufficient to restore the OS? I have restored information and files from it previously but never an OS. I have never done a formal backup that I know of. Any advice?
Additionally, if you do think I can do this on my own then any recommendations on a hard drive would be appreciated. It appears that Other World Computing has SSD drives for a reasonable price.
    Thanks

    Hi Scottadel,
Other World Computing is an excellent choice for a replacement HD. They also have instructional videos, and if they're not enough you can go to iFixit.com for very detailed photos and step-by-step instructions. Make sure you have a clean place to work. An hour of uninterrupted time will be more than enough. An empty egg carton makes a good receptacle for tiny screws.
Once you install the HD, boot OS X Recovery, select the new disk and format it. This may not be necessary if you buy one already formatted for OS X.
As far as replacing your data, if you already have a Time Machine backup, restoring your hard disk's contents is very easy. Boot OS X Recovery and select "Restore from Time Machine backup". You can select from any number of complete backups, but usually you will want the most recent one. Time Machine will restore your entire hard disk as if nothing ever happened.
To ensure the restoration doesn't take a very long time, connect the MBP to the Time Capsule with Ethernet.
