Fix 'Recovery' slider & add 'Color Correction' slider to Tone Curve

My requests:
1.) Please change the behavior of the 'Recovery' slider so that it attacks very-blown-out-highlights more rigorously than less-blown-out-highlights.
2.) Please add a 'Color Correction' slider to the Tone Curve that is analogous to the 'Color Correction' slider built into the 'Shadows/Highlights' tool in Adobe Photoshop & Apple Aperture.
To more clearly understand what I'm asking for, let me compare Aperture vs. LR's handling of Highlight Recovery, and why I prefer how Aperture recovers my highlights with its Shadows/Highlights tool vs. how LR recovers my highlights with the 'Recovery' slider OR Tone Curve.
1.) Aperture's 'Shadows/Highlights' tool recovers highlights by attacking the brightest parts of the highlights more harshly than the lesser bright parts of the highlights (th extent of luminosities attacked is adjustable using the 'High Tonal Width' slider). LR's "Recovery' tool doesn't seem to, among highlights, preferentially attack the brighter parts of the highlights over the less bright highlights. In fact, sometimes it leaves THE brightest parts of my image nearly untouched! I've posted an image below that shows this.
2.) Aperture's 'Highlights' tool recovers highlights WHILE maintaining color saturation (you can control the extent to which this saturation is maintained using the 'Color Correction' slider under Advanced settings fo the Shadows/Highlights tool). LR's 'Highlights' within the Tone Curve desaturates colors as highlights are 'recovered' by bringing 'Highlights' down. Again, I've posted an image below that shows this.
Here is an image that clearly shows the different behaviors of Aperture's Shadows/Highlights tool vs. LR's Recovery tool vs. LR's 'Highlights' slider within the Tone Curve:

I believe that LR's 'Recovery' slider has much room for improvement (i.e. attack the blown-out highlights more harshly than the less-blown-out highlights), and the addition, to LR's Tone Curve, of a similar 'Color Correction' slider as Aperture's & PS CS3's very own 'Shadows/Highlights' tools have, would be very welcome.
Thank you for your consideration,
Rishi

Funny thing is, LR just seems unwilling to touch (255,255,255) blown-out highlights. In all my test images with a blown-out sun, LR leaves the sun at (255,255,255) after all combinations of exposure, recovery, and Tone Curve manipulations. Whereas Aperture will bring it down to something like (128,128,128). Which seems more logical, to me, if one is trying to darken the image or darken highlights... right?
Also, if you look at the Seattle & Mt. Rainier image, no matter what I try, LR will not get rid of that brighter 'halo' to the upper left of Mt. Rainier. It just won't! 'Recovery' ends up highlighting just that bubble, and decreasing the Highlights in the Tone Curve just turns it into a grey, desaturated, halo. I'm telling, it just won't get rid of that halo! It has a love affair with it! :)
Aperture immediately gets rid of it with its Highlight slider, and Photoshop's 'Shadows/Highlights' tool also gets rid of it after a bit of manipulations/tweaking.
Now, I try to avoid Aperture at all costs, but, for all these images, seems like I need to use Aperture as my 'external editor' just to fix the highlights!
Any suggestions are very much welcome & appreciated.

  • FCE not exporting color corrections (help please)

I see there are some really experienced Final Cut folks here. Anyone care to help with this glitch?
I've imported AVCHD footage from a Canon Vixia in 1920x1080. I edit it in Final Cut Express. I add Color Correction and Brightness / Contrast Filters. Then I export it as regular Quicktime (no compression). For some reason the brightness changes get exported but the color correction changes do not. I have tried rendering the footage before export. No change. It only exports brightness edits.
    How can I fix this?
    thank you for your help!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
What are your sequence settings? Are you seeing the color changes in your canvas before export?

  • Color correction like in Aperture

    Hi
Im using Aperture for my photos, and there is a nice preset in Adjustment -> Presets -> Quick fix, which makes the color correction for us.
Is there such option in FCP X ?
Im not good in color correction so i would like to use feature like this.
    Thank you

I don't care for it but you could try the balance color function under the magic wand in the toolbar.

  • Losing Mask when color correcting

I am trying to isolate a certain color, so I applied a mask in Motion because I get a much better/easier mask there. I bring it back in to FCP and add color correction, no problem. But the second I try to limit the effect it is gone. It is like that makes the alpha go away or something. Any thoughts to why this is happening and any suggestions?
    Thanks as always
    Shawn

Ok, let me try this again.
On track one I have a clip that is black and white.
On track two I have the same clip that I have put a mask on in Motion. Which is over an object that I want to isolate the color which in this case is orange.
I add a color correction filter to clip 2, then I clip on the limit effect triangle in color correction and use the dropper to select the orange from my clip.
At the point the mask immediately disappears. That is about as clear as I can make it.
All I want to know is why this is happening and a possible work aroound. Color might be the be solution for this down the road, but would like to figure this problem out for now if possible.

  • Lost color temperature slider

With so many keyboard commands I was playing around and lost the color temperature slider in the adjustments panel. I was setting all my indoor flash shots to 4,400K and I tried a couple new keyboard commands and poof, it's gone.
Any idea how to get it back?
    Thanks,
    Jeffrey

Hit the Plus menu at the top of the adjustment panel and choose White Balance.
When selected, click the Gear icon next to White Balance and select Add to Default Set

  • I need the LR equivalent of the PS red slider in color balance

For some reason all my studio portraits need the red slider in PS to go down 6-10 points.  But I cannot figure out how to reproduce that in LR.  I've tried the camera calibration but it doesn't seem the same.  This is a HUGE problem for me.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm runing lr4 and cs6.  Thanks.

I just wish wish wish that LR had color balance sliders like PS.
As Tom Rockwell already mentioned the RGB Tone Curves will provide very similar capability PS's Color Balance sliders. Go to the Tone Curve, click on the small icon in the lower right corner of the panel, and select the 'Red' Channel. To emulate the "midtone" Red/ Cyan Color Balance slider grab the curve at the 50% point and lower it to decrease red midtones.
That said I would agree with Web Weaver that your White Balance is off for your studio lighting setup and suggest using the White Balance Sliders for correcting it. You can then save it as a Develop Preset using only White Balance and perhaps Camera Calibration 'Profile' settings checked. Using a white balance card or ColorChecker Passport (above) will give you much more accurate results.

  • How to change color of slider-thumb?

    Hi,

  • Why Levels mid-point slider and Exposure Gamma Correction slider not the same?

Both the mid-point slider in Levels and the Gamma Correction slider in Exposure adjustment appear to modify Gamma.  They even use the same numeric scale.
When Gamma <= 1, both sliders appear to produce the same results (confirmed with a couple of random sample settings and using the Difference blend mode).
When Gamma > 1, however, the results are very different.  Levels produces more what one would expect in terms of moving the Gamma curve without moving the white and black points but the Exposure Gamma Correction slider seems to do something very different, either moving the black point or applying a very different curve the produces much brighter tones in the dark shadows.
Can anyone explain why and how these two adjustments produce different results?
Is this a bug with the Exposure adjustment?
By the way, in my limited tests of this I was just using a standard RGB file in 16-bit mode - nothing fancy like 32-bit or LAB or anything like that.  Also, Photoshop CS6 Extended.  Both 32- and 64-bit versions show the same behavior.
    Thanks.

The differing gamma adjustment results also occur in the OS X version of Ps 13.0.1
The situation is worse than you realize, Dennis. Test with a linear grayscale gradient in 16-bit or 8-bit RGB mode instead of arbitrary images. Remember to view at 100% zoom for an accurate display.
Gamma adjustments of less than 1 performed by Levels adjustment layer and Exposure adjustment layer do differ but to a less obvious extent than when the adjustment is greater than 1. Differences can be seen in histograms, and low level differences when differencing layers can be made more obvious by adding an Exposure adjustment layer with the exposure increased.
You'll get further different results by using the gamma adjustment in the "Exposure and Gamma" method of Image > Adjustment > HDR Toning. Notice that the gamma value there has to be specified as the inverse of that in Levels and Exposure.
I haven't bothered to calculate which, if any, of the three gamma adjustment controls gives correct results because that is Adobe's responsibility.
It's quite ridiculous that a common routine giving consistent and correct results isn't being used for all these gamma adjustments. Code re-use makes software more robust, simpler to test, simpler to correct, leaner and overall easier to manage. But what do I know.

  • How to add a Title (slide? screen?) BEFORE the video track

    Hello,
I'm very new to Adobe Premiere Pro and I'm trying to figure out how to add a title to my project but I don't want the title on the start of the video in the sequence. I'd like to add it to a black screen, maybe with some transition effects, that will play prior to the video starting. Do I need to create a black image in CS and add it as a still and just add the title to the still which I can position before the video/audio track A starts?
I'm hoping that there's something I can do right within Premiere that will give me a place to put the title before my video starts. I didn't see an option to add a blank slide or something to that effect that I can add title to.
    thanks for your assistance!
The more I learn the more excited I get, this software is great.

Thanks for the link.. like I said in my post, I'm brand new to the software and I've been watching and following guides for hours. Time is not on my side, I have a project that must be done by the end of this week and I have very limited time after work.
So when I have the head at the begining of my main track and click INSERT in the source monitor window it inserts a duplicate of the entire video so I have TWO videos in my sequence. This is clearly not what I'm wanting so I'm assuming that there's something I'm missing. I've searched google but don't see anything.
I'm just looking to add a black, blank screen that I can add a title to before my video begins. I realize this may be rudamentary to season vets but as I said, I'm very new and trying to learn this all quickly and I would really appreciate if someone could point me directly to some information about it. I'm not afraid to read and learn, hell I love it, but I'm pressed for time so someone just telling me, "go learn the software" with a link to a huge FAQ, doesn't really help me.
I've already learned a ton from some great guides but I have yet to have anyone indicate how to add extra footage (be it a still or blank video) directly from Premiere Pro.
Thank you all for your time!
EDIT: I think I figured it out... I just bumped the start of the main track up about 10 seconds and I added new item "Black Screen" right in front of it. I will add the title to this. Thanks all.

  • Add Chart to Slide using Automator

    Keynote 08 version 4.0.3
    Automator version 2.0.2 (160)
I am creating a Keynote presentation with Automator, and I am trying to add a chart to a slide and am encountering an error.
Here are the following steps to reproduce the error.
    1) Start Automator and create a Custom workflow
    2) Drag "Make New Keynote Presentation" to workflow
    ___a) Change Theme to Black
    ___b) Change Width to 1024
    ___c) Change Height to 768
    3) Drag "Add Slide to Keynote Presentation" to workflow
    4) Drag "Get Specified Text" to workflow (I will talk more about this action more later)
    5) Drag "Add Chart to Slide"
___a) Change Chart Type to Area 2D (this is the default for me)
___b) Change Chart Group to Column (this is default for me)
___c) Change Slide to 1 (this is the default for me)
    5) Press the Run button on Automator
The error I get is the following:
"Keynote got an error: Invalid key form. (459482768)"
No matter what data I put in step 4 "Get Specified Text" I get an error. The description of "Add Chart to Slide" says the input is a two dimensional array of chart labels and data. What format should this two dimensional array be in? I have tried many different combinations and all have an error.
Has anybody tried to "Add Chart to Slide" and had it work?

It's often necessary to delete the album art from an mp3 track before adding to a slideshow.
If using Apple files, it's possible to make an MP3 in iTunes.

  • Add keyframes color-correcting a clip

I'm using Final Cut Pro 10.1.4 on an iMac with Yosemite 10.10.1.
When I try adding multiple sequential color corrections in a single clip, there is no way to add keyframes to each correction.
In the video inspector the add keyframe symbol does not appear.
In the show video animation window, if I clik "control k" the keyframe symbol does appear,  but if I add more than 1 keyframe only the last one is active, so I can only correct the entire clip.
Is there any way to add more than 1 sequential correction  using keyframes, instead of cutting che clip into multiple segment and correcting each one of them?

I have an RGB Channel Mixer that can be keyframed.
First, I recommend turning on Video Scopes (RGB Parade) and turning off the Color board for the title (you do not want to accidentally color grade the title).
RGB Channel Mixer is a title effect, so just drag it over the region you need to color "mix". You can use this effect in conjunction with the color board for the storyline clip. (Do not color correct the channel mixer!
You can toggle the view with the channel mixer selected — type 'v'.
You can download it here: RGB Channel Mixer
It won't hurt to try it and if you don't like it - just delete it. (It's still a bit of an experiment at this point.)
The effect works by mixing the red, green and blue channels separately against a black background solid. The Amount values use opacity to change the mix. The Boost values are different. They add a little "gain" in the channel. There's a subtle difference between the two. Contrast and Brightness controls are added to help with the lack of range assist (shadow, mids, highlights).

  • How do i add a  blank slide

How do i add a blank slide and text?

    In the slide show album
As Frank said,   only you have to pick a slideshow Theme that will allow it (Classic, Ken Burns).  For example, in the "Places" theme these options to insert blank slides will be grayed out (in Aperture 3.4.3), since this theme creates its own titles based on the locations. Switching between themes will not help. Title slides inserted using another theme will simply be removed.
With "Places" or "Reflections" the cogwheel menu will look like this: You'll have nearly no control about the slide transitions at all:
To add blank slides to a slideshow these themes, create images with a solid black or white background by adjusting new versions of your images or creating them in an external editor.

Is the resolution of your powerpoint presentation and Captivate Project same, make sure it is same, else, it would rescale it to fit on the sldie, rescaling might detoriate the quality.
