Doublechecking. Have you tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

  • IPod has been detected, but coudl not be identified properly? Help!

I'm trying to put songs on my mom's new iPod. It has never been used before, and it is an iPod 5th generation nano. I'm using Windows XP.
Every time I connect it to iTunes, it says "An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod and try again."
I've disconnected and reconnected it about 15 times now, restarted the iPod, deleted and reinstalled iTunes, restarted the computer, and it still says the same thing.
    What can I do?

    Anyone?

  • ITunes message: an ipod has been detected but could not be identified properly.

For some reason my ipod nano 7th generation will not connect to iTunes anymore. It comes up on my computer but iTunes will not "identify" it. I have tried resetting my ipod and unistalling iTunes then reinstalling and following the help intructions online. Anyone know how to fix this? Cheers.

I recently began receiving this message when i try to sync my ipod to itunes:  " an ipod has been detected but it could not be identified properly."   Never had this problem before.  Have tried all troubleshooting suggestions.

  • How come when i connect my nano to my computer it says in itunes "an ipod has been detected but could not be itentified properly"?

whenever i connect my ipod nano to my computer, itunes gives me a pop-up that says, "an ipod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect then reconnect the ipod, then try again." when i do that, i get the same pop-up. beneath the pop-up stated before it also says "If the problem persists, uninstall Itunes, then install Itunes again." but after doing that, it still will not read my ipod and scan it in.

Does the Apple ID on the iPod match the Apple ID on iTunes?

  • Upgraded to 11.1.4.62.  Now iTunes is saying "An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly.  Disconnect then reconnect ..."  I removed iTunes and reinstalled.  I stopped and started the service.  I reset the iPod.  When I put it in disk

I upgraded to 11.1.14.62 this morning.  Not iTunes is saying "An iPod had been detected but could not be identified properly".  I unlugged/replugged in.  I reset the iPod, I removed iTunes and reinstalled.  I'ver tried three different cables.
When I put the iPod in disk mode it shows up briefly as a disk then goes away.
    Any ideas?

Hi there  - I've spoken with Apple and here is their response (worked for me). You need to uninstall not only iTunes, but also (in this order):
    1) iTunes
    2) Apple Software Update
    3) Apple Mobile Device Support
    4) Bonjour
    5) Apple Application Support
    Then you restart your computer.
Then you install the latest version of iTunes (which will reinstall all those things you uninstalled).
Then you restart your computer again.
Mine is working perfectly again now.
I hope it works for you,
    Carmen.

  • The answer has been found for "ipod nano has been detected but can not be identified properly."

After MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS of troubleshooting this problem (for days) another poster fixed her problem in a discussion she had started.  It immdeiately fixed mine too.  Instead of only uninstalling iTunes, uninstall EVERY Apple program on your computer.  Go to Control Panel/Add-Remove programs.  In the list of programs, click the "Publisher" column at the top to sort by publisher name.  Then uninstall ALL of the Apple programs, including Bonjour, Application Support, Apple Applcation Support, etc. (They will all come back when you reinstall iTunes.)
Restart your computer, then reinstall iTunes.  Like magic my Nano was repsonding like the good old days.  It is happily staying connected and charging right now.
    Please pass it on!

I have tried everythng on the help page on apple

I'm having the same problem. It's either the computer of a corrupted download of iTunes. I connected the nano to another computer and it recognized it immediately. I have the current version on both so I suspect it's a corrupted iTunes download.

Ever since having to replace my hard drive on my laptop and also the operating system, I cannot get my ipod to work with my laptop.  I continually get this message.  I have tried every troubleshooting procedure repeatedly and also have tried all the posts on the support communities.  Can anyone help?

Nevermind that first part as I forgot that nothing shows up for the Nano at all in Device Manager,
The 2nd half of my reply still applies:
Otherwise, try uninstalling all USB root controlllers from your system, rebooting your PC, and reconnecting your Nano. This root controller drivers will automatically be re-installed upon reboot.

Holding down the lower volume and sleep buttons at least launches iTunes (I have the latest version) and I get a "Waiting for iPod" message and a progress bar which doesn't show any progress, and then after about a minute I get the unknown error message.

    Hi LJ Zinkand,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like iTunes gives an error about the iPod. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • A new ipod has been detected but cannot be identified. [drivers?]

Yes -that again- the reason I'm making a new post is that this is the second time an ipod hasn't worked with me, I would like to know if there's something I can do to my system or whatever to repair it. Here's the situation.
    - Just so ya know, I use Vista on a laptop [unfortunatley]
    - Previously [as in yesterday] I had an ipod touch, it was stuck in recovery mode and nothing [and I mean nothing] worked to recover it, it wasn't being recognized at all. This problem occured when I installed Itunes 9.
    - Today I bought myself a brand new iPod Nano (5th Gen) for several reasons [not just to do with the itouch breaking, I was sick to death of the thing in general], took it home and connected it. 'A new ipod has been detected but cannot be identified' yadda yadda.
    - I tried everything, I have also downgraded my itunes back to 8, still the same message!! Argh! Here's the thing (that I think might be causing the problem) when I open Device Manager and go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers, there is no apple/ipod recognized. There is a 'USB Mass Storage Device' whch has an error symbol next to it, I've tired updating/reinstalling it etc and it doesn't work ):
    - Is there anything anyone can do? I'm so sick of ipods breaking on me. Just so you guys know, I'm not completley computer savvy so i'll need precise instructions, thanks so much to anyone who can help me.

This is how it's displayed: http://i50.tinypic.com/nd7vk7.jpg
And this is what happens when I click properties and 'search for solutions': http://i47.tinypic.com/2iu3vrc.jpg (the box disappears after that, apparently having done nothing, when I search online for software it informs me my computer already has the best/latest installed)
    I use a Toshiba Satelite L350-170, my Vista is a 32-bit Thankyou!
