HT5622 Why, in the name of all that is good and Holy, can I not make my iCloud email address my Apple ID?

I want to ELIMINATE Google. From my life. I don't need their mail, I don't need their maps. I don't need their productivity software, I don't need their apps. I don't want them crawling all my data when I search the web. I don't need their browser, I don't need their OS. I don't need their videos, I don't need their chat.
But guess what? My old Google email is my iCloud ID! F me right? So now I would have to reactivate my old Yahoo! account (imposible?) or create a new one (NOT) or add a new email to my personal website service (since my email for that is already another Apple/iCloud ID) because I can't use my iCloud.com email address as my Apple/iCloud ID. WHAT GIVES? Is it some sort of security thing? It doesn't make any sense! Has anyone else had this problem? Is this the reality, or am I missing something?

Hi Powers,
Yeah, sorry about that.... Here's the scoop:
If, when you go to Manage your Apple ID, the Apple ID and the Primary email address
are on two separate lines, then you are good to go - just change the email address (that is how my old one is).
However, if it has the Apple ID/Primary email address both in the same box, you will  have to change it. So, if that is the case, your best bet is to get a new email address from whatever service you wish, then Edit your old Google Apple ID to the new email address. That will change the corresponding iCloud address at the same time, so you are basically only "updating" your Apple ID with a new valid email address.
Sorry about any confusion. My primary Apple ID is my @me.com one, and my other one is super old, so that is why it probably has the Primary email address as a separate field from the Apple ID.
Hope that this all makes sense. Post back if you have questions!
Cheers,
GB
P.S., I hope you don't want to kill me now....

  • Why in the name of all that is holy is Apple dropping iDisk?

I rely upon my iDisk to work on docs at home and at work from different machines.    I do not have an iOS 5 device.  iCloud support tells me that I need to open it from an iOS device before I can see it from a mac.
What am I missing.  iDisk is a seamless and very useful tool.   This will drive me away fromi0S devices.  I already turned in my old iPhone due to it's ATT handicap.  I am so bloody irritated with this iCloud/iDisk FAIL that I will refuse to purchase another iOS device.
    Buh-bye

I doubt you care about my needs or feelings either. We don't know each other. Why should we? I come here to answer people's technical questions - not provide therapy or a shoulder to cry on.
My internet connection is plenty fast enough thanks. I never said anything about speed of internet.
You clearly don't understand how iDisk syncs files, and how its (vastly superior) competitors do - so you are in no position to say who the reaps benefits of which service.
If you are happy waiting around while iDisk re-uploads and then downloads the whole of a file, every single time you only change one tiny bit of it, then you obviously have more time to waste than me. If you're happy in the knowledge that iDisk does not maintain any backups of the files you upload to it, and has no mechanism for reverting back to a older version in the event of a upload error, or perhaps a mistake you made in the file then you obviously don't value your data as much as me.
iDisk's competitors offer such things and much more, making them faster, more reliable and trustworthy in the process. If iDisk was so great, why would Apple discontinue it? And why did Apple try to buy one of iDisk's main competitors?
Still, if you're content with sub-standard services, again, its a free world and your choice. Just don't say nobody alerted you to the existence of better services.
Oh, and by the way... not buying another iOS device changes nothing for you. You'll still need to find an alternative service to sync your files between your home and work computers - iOS devices have nothing to do with that process.

  • My I Phone keeps sayins "no sims Card" in the upper left hand corner of the phone, what does that mean? And I can't connect to WI-FI right now, WhY?

My I Phone 5 is saying "no Sims" card in the upper left hand cornor of the phone, what does that mean? And I can't get connected to Wi-Fi, why not???

If the Wi-Fi diagnostics are okay then check your own Wi-Fi router to find out how many clients are connected. The number of clients may not matter but how much data Hogging is going on. If you have multiple computer Services accounts active Wi-Fi cannot handle that much. Examples would be two people playing World of Warcraft, Two people watching a Netflix movie or AppleTV movie, One person Downloading iTunes movies or music at the same time. That accounts for a lot of Wi-Fi usage.

  • I have a problem. My Apple ID is not my icloud email address my Apple ID is my msn account, but I need to reset the password for my icloud email because I can't remember what it is. How do I do that?

I have a problem. My Apple ID is not my iCloud email, my msn is my Apple ID, but I need to reset the password for my icloud email address because I can't remember what it is. How can do I reset my iCloud emaill password when it's not my Apple ID??

Your iCloud and @icloud.com login ID is an Apple ID. Go to http://appleid.apple.com and sign in with the ID you use to sign into iCloud (you can check this by going to http://www.icloud.com and signing in there).
Click 'Password & Security' in the sidebar and you will be able to change the password.
    HOWEVER
Before you do this you must turn off 'Find My iPhone/iPad/iMac' if you have it enabled on any of your devices, otherwise you will land yourself in difficulties.

  • Why can't I use my iCloud Email Address as my Apple ID?

Why won't Apple allow us to use their own @icloud.com domain for an Apple ID. This has upset me since the inception of MobileMe; it makes perfect sense that many people would prefer to use their iCloud email address as there Apple ID. We've all had MobileMe since day one, which is now iCloud; it's been several years, and I still can't do it. Having to frequently log in with an individual Apple ID & Individual iCloud account creates so much confusion, especially with my wife and parents.
I know this is an age old complaint, but it doesn't make it any less relevant. Is there a special way to change my existing Apple ID to my existing iCloud email address? If not, then why won't Apple allow it?
Please don't refer me to this article Change your Apple ID.

  • HT1918 Why can't I use my icloud email address for my iTunes account

Tired of the cox communications inability to imap emails, going to dump it completely want to use the icloud email address I have, why can't I change my apple id to that email address

"Well, then I want to be able to merge that one and the one my purchases are on..."
This is exactly what I want to do but don't think I can:
    I noticed the following :
If you attempt to create an Apple ID which is the same as your @icloud email address from the online facility, it does not allow you (can't use an Apple associated email address as your Apple ID). However - if you start a fresh device - such as a new iPhone, iPad (must be mobile it seems), and then create an iCloud account and Apple ID from the prompts when setting up the mobile device, it IS possible to have your Apple ID and @iCloud email address as the same. I know because I just did it!
Unfortunately for me, the result I got above is not for one of my own ID's but a friends, and I would VERY much like to do the same - my current Apple ID is a completely different email address from my iCloud account. Trying to get them the same in my situation is a major bother - I think that if I wipe a device (such as an iPhone5 that is mine) and try to setup as I did my friend's device, then I will get a conflict because the iCloud email I have ALREADY exists. This is my worry and I will not attempt this until I get the new iPad 4 soon to test this.
There is an inconsistency here between the two methods of creating Apple ID's and iCloud accounts.
Overall in my opinion, the Apple ID system as currently available from Apple is not designed very well, and should be addressed.
    Best wishes -

  • Why can't I use my icloud email for my apple ID?

I want to get rid of my old email address and only use icloud but Apple ID says I cannot use my icloud email address. Why would they offer icloud email if a user cannot use it as their primary address?

You can use iCloud as your primary email, just keep the other as a backup.
It really isn't a good idea to rely on just one email address in case you get an unexpected problem, for example:

  • Why are the songs in my iphone playlists grey and I can't move them.

Why are the songs in my iPhone playlists grayed out.  I am unable to move and organize them.  I just downloaded some audio books from Audible and I cannot moved them to a playlist on my iPhone either.  What step am I missing?

    margielm2 wrote:
So, if I haven't made any albums, I can't move pictures in the main window of the Organizer?
Yes, you can't. The default order in the main window is based on date, ascending or descending when you are in the standard 'thumbnail view'. If you are in 'folder' view, with your folders shown in the left panel, you are shown the pictures in alphabetical order of the file names.
    I haven't created albums yet.
I have so many pictures. I wanted to put all the pictures for each album next to each other so I can find them easily.
It's not difficult to create albums and 'drag' pictures in it. When an album is selected, you can move your pictures around in any order in the main window panel.
Albums are one way of grouping and ordering pictures. You should try to use keywords to organize and retrieve your pictures.

  • Can I have my new iCloud email address be the default instead of my Apple ID?

My apple ID is based on an old @mac.com account that no longer works. My new iCloud account has given me a new @me.com account but I can't use it as the default and all email going out from iPhone apps, i.e.: news articles, etc., is being sent from the @mac.com account and bouncing from the server. I can switch the "from"line so that it goes through the working account, but I have to do it every time I send something. Is there a way to permanently set the new @me.com address as the default or do I need to open a new iCloud account?

Thanks for your answer, but perhaps I didn't make myself clear. What I would like to do is change my default email address for iCloud from the old @mac.com address that does not work anymore to the new @me.com that Apple has issued me, or even a gmail account. Why does the iCloud account have to be linked to an email address that no longer works?

  • HT5621 Why can't I use my iCloud email address as an Apple ID?

I am totally bewildered! I have taken the plunge to leave Gmail, my primary email address and move to iCloud. The first thing I tried to do, was change my Apple ID email address. To my astonishment, while it allows gmail.com, it does not allow its own icloud.com. This means that I either, have to keep on with gmail as my primary address or create another one eg sky.com. What is going on? I simply want to migrate from gmail to icloud and Apple trip me up at the first fence. Any idea, what I can do? Why won't Apple, accept it's own email address?

When you start from scratch you can create an @icloud.com address and use it as your ID, but though it seems illogical you can't do what you ask. I don't know whether this is a technical issue.
However, I would suggest that having your published email address as your login is poor security. This used to be the case with MobileMe and there were quite a number of complaints from people who had found themselves locked out of their account because some idiot had tried to sign into their account several times without knowing the password. They then had to change the password in the ID and all their devices, and a couple of weeks later it would happen again.
This sort of nonsense sometimes arose through mis-typing, and sometimes because some idiot would become convinced that he owned the address and would keep trying to log in with it.
Of course, someone who knew your email address and felt malicious could render your account useless by keeping on doing this. I know all this sounds a bit extreme, and it is moderately unlikely, but these things do happen.
For best security, I would suggest creating a new free address somewhere with a garbage username which can't be guessed and is unlikely to be arrived at by accident. I know it's less convenient that logging in with your @icloud.com address, but you might like to think about the security issue here.

  • Why can't I change my primary email address in Apple ID?

  • Why can't I use my iCloud email as my Apple ID's primary email?

I want to use my iCloud email as my primary email address so that I can recieve purchase receipts on this email without having to repurchase all my apps and have to juggle two IDs. Apple seems to not want to let me do this. Is there anything I can do? Setting my iCloud as a secondary email doesn't help.

  • Why can't you use your iCloud email address for your Apple ID?

Why can't an iCloud.com email address be used to create an Apple ID?  Is iCloud email not to be used as a primary email?

You can if you create an new Apple ID at the time you create the iCloud account, and choose to create a new @icloud.com email address as your primary email address when creating the ID.  See Imp68's post here for an example of how you would do this on a Mac: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22283348#22283348.
You could not use your existing @icloud.com email address as it is already an alias for your existing iCloud ID; you would have to create a new one.

  • HT201342 Why can you not use your iCloud account as your apple ID?

    ??

This answer is probably the most popular one on the forum.  But apparently, this is a view not shared by virtually anyone else in the industry.  You can pretty much point to the same risks at stake for Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, or what-have-you.  No one else requires you to use a primary account other than their own.
The predicament you mentioned could easily be resolved by requiring multiple contact numbers and addresses, which Apple kind of does already.
My thinking is there's either something more 'sinister' at play, or Apple just haven't really took the time to think about this issue.

  • In the name of all that's holy

    I have a 12" PowerBook G4.
It had been behaving erratically, starting with not being able to start it up (hangs at apple both with and without the spinner).
So, I tried to back-up my data using target disk mode, but it repeatedly locked up when trying to transfer data. I figured there was a disk problem.
I ran both Disk Utility (from a Tiger installation disk) and DiskWarrior (3.0.3), neither of which would run because of disk malfunction.
Finally, I tried zeroing the drive and reinstalling Tiger (given up on my data at this point) in addition to reseting the SMC, the nvram, and the pram -- and lo and behold -- I'm still stuck at the grey apple (no spinner).
I unfortunately do not have a copy of the Apple Hardware Check, but I'm curious if anyone knows of anything else I might try in the meantime.
    thank you!

    an update:
so, TechTool Pro (4.5.1) is running a surface scan. all other hardware tests have passed.
already though, with the surface scan, 45 bad blocks have been found out of about 45,000 scanned. also, it's going absurdly slow. it's taken about 25 minutes to scan the 45,000 blocks (out of 150,000,000).
does this mean something to someone?
