.htaccess files still a problem?

Several months ago I learned that my .htaccess file, which I used to redirect users to a custom 404 page, was conflicting with InContext Editing. Adobe advised me to disable my .htaccess file. (See original discussion.) Has Adobe made any changes to InContext Editing that will allow me to re-enable my .htaccess file? Or is this considered a permanent conflict that can never be fixed?
I would like to use my .htaccess file again!

A general ruleof thumb about error pages... They should be a page that looks and feels like your regular pages in the rest of the site. They should have an explanation stating that the page they requested doesn't exist.
More importantly, it should give the visitor the oportunity to find the page they are looking for. Often I supply a sitemap of sorts. You should also provide a means for them to report the error, if they think they got to the page by entering a valid address. (for example, they bookmarked a page that has been moved or deleted). This will give you the opportunity to correct that through a mod_rewrite 301 as I demonstrate here... How to Redirect a Web Page | 301 redirect
Whatever you do... DON'T USE the <META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="0; URL=....>.... that throws them to another page and breaks the "BACK" button.
Example of an error page:
<div id="404message">
        <h1>Sorry</h1>
<h2>We could not find the page you requested</h2>
<p>You found a page that no longer exists or
              has been moved.</p>
<p>If this is an eror on our part. <a href="/contact/"
              title="Contact">Contact Us</a> and we'll fix it.</p>
<h3>Meanwhile, you may try looking over any one of these pages:</h3>
            <p><a href="http://www.yoursite.com/" title="Home">Home</a></p>
            <p><a href="./page2/" title="Description">Page 2</a></p>
            <p><a href="./page3/" title="Description">Page 3</a></p>
            <p><a href="./page4/" title="Description">Page 4</a></p>

  • Read other posts - still cannot see .htaccess files in DW CS4

Hi - I don't know if it's me or what, but I've read other posts and still cannot figure out why I cannot see .htaccess files through DW CS4.  It says to go to VIEW but I do not have or see this option.
    Here are some screenshots:
and of course the folder where you cannot see the .htaccess file

Mac OS 10.4 and earlier (and *nix systems in general) treat file names with a period in front as telling the file system that that particular file is supposed to be hidden. And thus it won't show up under the normal file system views. But the file is still there. To see it, open up Terminal and type:
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
Relaunch Finder and now you should be able to see every invisble file on your machine. To return to default, go back to Terminal and type:
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
and relaunch Finder and everything should be back to normal.
Or you can use one of the many utility apps out there that allow you to make these kinds of changes. (Cocktail comes to mind - http://www.maintain.se/cocktail).
Of course you can also build a workflow such as yours as well...  :-)

Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

I still have problems with getting my website online. I have defined my server. Then I did the test and there was a connection via FTP. I put my files on the external server and there is a connection with the external server. But when I check to see my website online (with Firefox, Explorer, Chrome browser) I always get the message 'Forbidden, You don't have permission to access / on this server.' Can somebody help me please? I have to get my website online..Thank you!

    Hello Els,
it's well known, that in all these cases you describe I'm not a friend of a detailed Troubleshooting (I see Nancy#s smile already).
To be able to be independent in all this things It is one of the reasons why I prefer an external FTP program. The difficulties with which you have to fight encourage me in this opinion, not least because we always search for experts, we don't charge a "jack of all trades".
To manage several websites or to upload my files and sometimes for the opposite way, for a necessary download from my server or to use a "a site-wide synch", I'm using FileZilla. It simply looks easier for me to keep track of all operations precisely and generate or reflect easily the desired tree structure.
Above all, FileZilla has a feature (translation from my German FileZilla) called "compare file list". Here it's possible to use file size or modification time as a criterion. There is also the possibility to "hide identical files", so that only these files which you want to redact remain visible.
And even if it means you have to install a new program, I am convinced that there is an advantage. Here is the link to get it and where you can read informations about how it works:
    http://filezilla-project.org/ and http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Tutorial#Using_the_site_manager
Mac: Mac OS X (Use: Show additional download options)
    http://filezilla-project.org/download.php
Of course, you also need all the access data to reach your server and for MIME issues, you should contact your web host/provider.
    Good luck!
    Hans-Günter
    P.S.
Since I use two screens, the whole thing became even more comfortable.

  • Still having problems: "File Import Failure"

    Hi All,
I am still having problems transferring clips to Time Line or Project window of CS4 or PPro1.5. I could copy all clips from the Sony Clip Browser(SXS Memory Card Reader) to HardDrive(not C:\drive). But when I drag clips from Hard Drive to Project Window, it says "File Import Failure" and file format (.MP4)not supported. The file shows like this:
    J:\test1\20100306210847\BPAV\CLPR\Test01\Test01.MP4
I really would appreciate if anyone could help me from the basics..I was trying this for the last 2weeks..I have uninstalled AdobeCS4 and installed PPro1.5. Still no difference.
My machine is a Dell 2.8GHz, 2GB DDR2RAM, plenty of internal and external HDD spaces.
Hope some one out there might help me with step by step procedure to get it going...
I don't know what to do now..
    Thx...Pushpa

    Hi Harm
The BPAV folder is in HDD connected  externally via USB2. I will transfer it to D:\ drive which is internal and it's SATA drive. will give it a try. Thx for ur input for my dumb queries..I am so frustrated now..
    Ur help much appreciated.

  • Mod Rewrite & .htaccess File on a Mac (Leopard)

I just copied all my websites over from my PC to my Mac and
    discovered
that my .htaccess files (originally created in Notepad)
    vanished...or
have simply become invisible. So what program do most people
    use to
create .htaccess files on a Mac? Do I need to track down my
    Notepad
version and delete it, or do they actually disappear on a
    Mac?
Also, I've read that mod rewrite doesn't work a Mac unless
    you enable
it. Actually, I assume that isn't true for Leopard, as I
    checked several
pages on my CMS, and they seemed to be working.
Still, I'm wondering what other surprises might be in store
    for me. Can
anyone else who has migrated their websites from a PC to a
    Mac tell me
    what obstacles you ran into?
I recently upgraded to Leopard and MAMP Pro and just
    installed Adobe
    Creative Suite, Web Premium.
    Thanks.

    Thanks.

Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps.
Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard drive at a Mac Authorized Repair.
Short history of repair and my Final Cut Pro installation:
    1. Macbook Pro stopped working, sendt it for repair. Had the Final Cut Pro installed,
    2. Desided to try a MiniMac and recovered my backup with Time Machine, got the Final Cut Pro working.
    3. Got my Macbook Pro back from repair, did backup on this one as well. But this time only the files not the Applications.
    4. Removed the files as mentioned in HT5149. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found.
    5. When I try to install Final Cut Pro from App Store, it downloads the application as planned. But after download it won´t show in the Application folder nor in the downloads folder, nor will it start an installation prosess. If I pause the installation in App Store, I can see the Final Cut Pro icon in my Dock. (But, as mentioned, after installation it won´t show neither here or in the Applications folder).
Any suggestions on what I should try now?
Thanks for any reply, I´m in deep water here...

Sounds like there is a file you're not getting.  Never do a removal manually.  It's so time consuming and a pain.  There's a very easy and fast way to do this, safely, properly.
Get the free "Final Cut Remover" app from Digital Rebellion (dot com), use this to remove FCP X.
    Reboot the Mac.
    Download from scratch.
If you're not seeing FCP X in your app folder, run Disk Utility to Repair all drives.
If that doesn't help, try running Disk Warrior from Altsoft to repair the directories on all drives.

  • How to find and edit an .htaccess file?

I trying to set up a podcast/blog in WordPress, and I need to edit an .htaccess file.
I use Fetch as my FTP client to access my web site's hosting account, and I can see that there's an .htaccess file there. I need to get it and add a couple lines of code to it to do a URL redirect.
When I use Fetch to "Get" it, it appears to download okay, but then I can't see it on my desktop or doing a search. I just downloaded EasyFind, on the advice given in another thread, but now I'm wondering, even if I can find the thing, whether I'm going to be able to edit it.
    Anybody got experience with this?
    Dave

After I posted my inquiry, I solved the problem. Here it is, step-by-step, for somebody wanting a simple solution:
    1. Download EasyFind from this location: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11706
    2. Launch EasyFind; make sure the option to show hidden files is checked on; and then search for .htaccess. It should show up in a list of all hidden files in wherever you're looking (Desktop or wherever).
    3. I double-clicked on .htaccess in EasyFind, and this opened the file in TextEdit. I edited the .htaccess file by adding the command info I needed (in my case, a redirect command). Then I did a simple "Save" command (not Save As...). This saved the edited version as .htaccess (hidden).
    4. I launched Fetch, and clicked "Put." In the Put dialog box, there's an option to show hidden files. When I checked that on, there was .htaccess, visible in the list. I selected that and FTPed it to my web server account.
    5. I tested the redirect, and it worked like a charm!
Thanks very much to Matt Baya for talking me through some of this, including how to change the .htaccess to do my redirect.

  • Help! File in use problem when using Swing app

Hi. I got a program that is pretty much a JFileChooser that prints to standard output the path of the file that I've chosen. If I invoke the DOS command:
java JFileChooserDemo, I will get the following as expected from the program:
"You chose a file named: C:\MyJava\Book.xls".
But if I invoke the following DOS command:
java JFileChooserDemo > output.txt, the file "output.txt" contains the following:
    "GetModuleHandleA succeed
    LoadLibrary returns baaa0000
You chose a file named: C:\MyJava\Book.xls"
So, if I try to open the file or try to modify "output.txt", I get an error message stating that the file is in use.
What's weird is that, I THINK if I have a program that DOES'NT use Swing or anything GUI-related and prints to standard output with the DOS "> outfile" command, I won't get this problem. So in other words, I can duplicate this problem with a sample Swing application that prints to standard output. Try it yourself.
In my original program, it does have an event handler that closes the JFileChooser and its container and exits the system via "System.exit(0);", but for some reason, something still has "locked" the output.txt file. I even did the ctr+alt+del and can't find anything that would lock the output.txt file. What's even weirder is that if I run the application again, but output to a different file like "output2.txt", this file is not locked, but the "output.txt" file still is. output2.txt also don't have contain the
    "GetModuleHandleA succeed
    LoadLibrary returns baaa0000" message.
The only way I know of that would "unlock" output.txt is to re-boot my computer.
So it seems I have to modify my program somehow because it appears the OS still thinks output.txt file is still in use.
Someone may think why would I invoke the java interpreter with the DOS "> outfile" command. Well, the reason being, I got a different version of the program that executes a query and I want it to create a delimited text file that contains the resultset of the query, so that I can then import it to Access, Excel, or whatever. But, because of this problem, I can't modify the query result without having to either run the application again and created another file name with the same result or re-boot. Of course, this would be silly.
Any help in how I can modify my program or any GUI-program so that if I invoke the DOS "> outfile" command, the outfile won't be "locked" would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. If you want my program, you can e-mail me or run any sample program from the Swing Tutorial that prints to standard output and just add the " > outfile" to the java interpreter command.

Does anyone still have problems with Premier Pro on Maverick? and is there any known fix?

I know OSX 10.9 Mavericks introduced a power saving feature called App Nap which is meant to slow down applications that it determins are inactive (or when minimized). This would mostly likely cause problems if you're dynamically linking After Effects comps to your timeline or sometimes exporting to Media Encoder.
Try disabling App Nap for all your Adobe App files...
    Go to your Applications folder
Go into individual Adobe app folders (ie. Adobe Premiere Pro CC)
Right-click on the Adobe app file (ie. Adobe Premiere Pro CC.app) and select Get Info
When the info window opens up, add a checkmark beside "Prevent App Nap"
    Restart the application
This fixed all my performance issues.

  • After saving a htaccess file, why the text is on one line

    hello all,
I am a webmaster and some time I have to setup a htaccess file (.txt file)When I edit it with Textedith, I make a modification and I save it. Nothing works.
When I open the same file with a PC, all the text is in one line. of course it will not work.
Can some one tell me why the file is not saved in the format when I open it, so it saved in one line?

TextEdit isn't the best choice for editing configuration files, since it doesn't use Unix line endings -
I thought TextEdit did use Unix line endings (LF). The reason it is all one line on a PC is that PC's do not, and thus will only display new lines if line endings are Windows format (CR + LF).
I don't think there should be any problem editing config files with TextEdit, but TextWranger is better, and it also easily handles file names that begin with a dot.

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
