Html & flash question

It is possible to embed a flash .swf inside an html web page.
Is it possible to embed an html file, such as a long text file, into a flash .swf space, such as a blank movie clip box?
Is there an alternative way to stick giant text files into a flash style document?

I definitely discovered this yesterday. Bold and Italic work, but break, paragraph, A HREF, and Headers didn't. With so many restrictions it seems the htmltext option is worthless (kind of like a new Itouch on a camping trip).
Related question:
Is there a special protocol, in actionscript that allows Youtube videos to be embedded (rather than creating a hotlink to a new html page with the standard youtube embedding technique) ?
Almost related question:
I used this format:
clicke2.onRelease = function(){
    getURL("http://www.google.com", "_blank");
for a winamp/mp3 radio station button, with the goal of doing something vaguely similar to shoutcast for a more specific list of internet radio stations, as shown below:
clicke4.onRelease = function(){
    getURL("http://www.sky.fm/mp3/classical.pls", "_blank");
this opens a blank html document and plays in winamp. I tried this:
clicke4.onRelease = function(){
     getURL("http://www.sky.fm/mp3/classical.pls", "_self");
but it did the same thing - opening a blank page along with the winamp. Opening the winamp is the goal, opening a blank page is not. Is there a way to not open the blank page?

  • JAVA 5.15 / HTML/ FLASH 5/ WIN98 SE questions

I'm a green Java 5.15 /HTML /Flash 5 user, with a PIII 450MgHz computer, using Win 98 SE. Whew! Now that the important preliminaries are out of the way, here are my problems:
    1) Most programs I've installed, have indicated where they will install and they add menu (and submenu) items in the Start Menu. Java 5 (update 15) did not. Why?
    2) The Java does not come with a compiler/decompiler/editor. Is there an all-in-one that I can download? Do I need a compiler to produce an executable which will run on any OS/Browser platform?
    3) When I run the VERIFY INSTALLATION, only the first part is successful (Duke); and then only skewed, because it tells me that I have Win XP installed!! :-) LOL.. The second part of the result shows me a red X, indicating some applet failure. I guess this verification is meant for latest Java 6-update 9, right?
    4) Is Java 5.15 compatible with HTML and Flash 5? In other words, can I write a simple initialize/increment variable routine in Java, and have it interface properly with the HTML that embeds my Flash 5? The goal is to load my Flash files at a particular frame in the movie, depending on the value of the variable (set in Java).
    Sincerely,
    Jakob

    Dear Inryii,
    2) Yes, I do have some rudimentary knowledge of Java and programming in general. Are you suggesting a text editor like Notepad? I would prefer a Java editor which could show me syntax errors. Any suggestions?
    3) What is there not to understand about the link: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp ?? You just click on the VERIFY INSTALLATION button to see if the Java you just installed, did so correctly. In my case, the Java installed itself (with the automatic install wizard) in a manner that I am not used to. The bottom line is that the verification was only partly correct because it was checking for Java 6 update 9 on a minimum OS of Win2000. I have Win98 SE.
    4) Again, what is so mysterious about Java 5.15 being compatible with HTML and Flash 5? In a nutshell, here is what I want to do: Initialize a numeric variable in Java, and either have Flash use this variable on the Home page, or load the Home page from the beginning. When a certain page is called, increment this variable in Java and again, either pass this variable to Flash, or load Flash at a particular frame. Is this possible?

  • PLEASE HELP- flashing question mark in folder

    Hi everyone,
last night I was just on my macbook as usual and suddenly it froze, so I turned it off. When i went to turn it back on, all that appeared was a flashing question mark in a folder.
I have tried all the suggestions on this page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042 , but none of them worked because it didn't even recognise/find the harddrive in the disk utility section. I don't have apple care ($419 is a lot of money for a student!) but I only bought the macbook about 6 months ago, so it is still within warranty. What should I do now?
Any help is much much appreciated!
    Melissa

    Melissa,
I just had the same exact problem last night too. I called the apple technical service number and nothing they did helped because the hard drive wasn't found. I even got a fire wire cable and tried to hook my MacBook up to another Mac and tried the target disk mode hoping I could pull off data that I needed, but the other mac couldn't find the disk either. I'm kind of worried about losing some of my data. If you could let me know if you find any solution that would be awesome! I plan on going to the apple store this weekend to get it looked at.

  • Flashing question mark at start up (details in post)

Problem: Flashing question mark at startup.
System: iBook G4 running OS X version 10.3.something.
Details: The machine froze on waking up when I opened it last night. I held down the power key to turn it off, then powered it up again and got a flashing question mark superimposed on a small blue folder icon.
    Further details:
    (1) I tried to start the iBook up in Firewire target mode to copy my data to another machine. Holding down the T key at startup brings up the Firewire screensaver, but the iBook drive does not appear on the host machine's desktop.
    (2) I can start the iBook from CD: I cannot find the CDs that came with the machine at the moment, but I can boot from a OS X 10.3 install CD that I have laying around.
    (3) The hard drive is not visible to Disk Utility: When I boot from the OS X 10.3 install CD and then start Disk Utility, my hard drive is not visible to Disk Utility.
    (4) Zapping PRAM does not help: I held down option-apple-P-R and restarted, letting the iBook chime four times for good measure. I still get the flashing question mark and the hard drive is still not visible to Disk Utility.
    (5) The hard drive is visible in single-user mode: I powered down again and held down apple-S while powering up. I am now in single-user mode. My hard drive is visible and all of the files I have inspected seem to be just fine. I have not done anything except cd into various directories, use ls to list the files in the directories, and use cat and more to display the contents of various text files.
Questions: Obviously what I would like is to be up and running as quickly as possible. But more importantly, I don't want to do anything that would muck up the data on my hard drive.
    (1) Is there any way to manually back up the data to a removable device while in single-user mode?
    (2) I have not done anything with fsck yet. Should I? What are the risks/benefits of using fsck?
    (3) Just for curiosity's sake: Why is the hard disk visible in single-user mode but not to Disk Utility?
    (4) What are your suggestions for what to do next? I am still in single-user mode and am happy to stay there while I wait for advice.
    Thanks,
    RJH

The following link is about backup:
    http://homepage.mac.com/lee_cullens/Bx3.html
    (1) Is there any way to manually back up the data to a removable device while in single-user mode?
Yes. If you have an external backup drive you can copy your files while in single-user mode. There are several available tools you can use: cp, rcp, rsync, and diskutil. These utilities may require knowing the Unix device names and paths. You can use the df command to obtain that information. Use the commandline "man cmd" to obtain the Unix help on the particular "cmd", e.g., man rcp.
    (2) I have not done anything with fsck yet. Should I? What are the risks/benefits of using fsck?
Fsck is simply a form of Disk Utility that can repair a startup volume when in single-user mode. One of the above references explains how to use fsck to repair the disk. Note that if fsck returns anything other than "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK", you should re-run fsck until the preceding message is received. If you re-run fsck more than 5 or 6 times without getting the OK message, then fsck is not able to fully repair the drive.
If you have other disk repair tools like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro, you should try to repair the drive with them. Both tools can perform repairs that neither Disk Utility nor fsck can.
Of course all the above is contingent on the drive actually being functional. If the drive has failed you may not have any success.

  • I got this flashing question mark, i did some research into this and found out that the hard drive is the cause

i recently found my ibook and decided to see if it would still turn on. it did but i got this flashing question mark, i did some research into this and found out that the hard drive is the cause. so i opened it up replaced the hard drive and closed it up, booted from the disc and crossed my fingers but it did not pick up the hard drive. i thought it might not have been installed properly, so i opened it up to check the connections to make shure they were secure and closed it back up but now it wont even boot from the disc. so dose anyone know whats wrong with it because i really don't just want throw it away if its a simple fix. please if anyone know i would greatly appreciate it.

There often were more than one build of Apple computer per model number designation...
In the instance of iBook (white dualUSB) there appear to be two with number A-1007.
And both of these were 14-inch display models.
    •iBook G3/800 14-Inch (32 VRAM - Tr) 800 MHz PowerPC 750fx (G3)

Either of these may be able to run a system no later than OS X Tiger 10.4.11.
So a system install disc set could be used to troubleshoot, install, restore &
prepare a replacement hard drive for a new system.
Not certain what the issues are behind your situation, there may be more than
meets the eye. Some models of iBook were more prone to hardware problems
and as they age, fewer opportunities to affordably repair them exist.
Good luck in resolving the iBook G3 issues...!

  • Flashing Question mark on start up?

So when I try to start up my PPC G5, I hear the start up tone, and then it goes straight to a grey screen with a flashing question mark. I followed all the steps on Apple's website to resolve this, I held option and started up, and all that came up were two buttons, one looked like a circle with an arrow at the end of it and the other was a straight arrow, also I couldn't move the mouse past a certain point on the screen, so the mouse was responding, it just couldn't move past maybe an inch on the left side of the screen. I tried restarting with the mouse and keyboard unplugged too, no dice. Then finally I decided to just re-install the leopard operating system. I put the disc in, go through all the steps, and when it asks me where i want to install Mac OS X, there's nothing to select. Where an icon for the hard drive should be it is just blank. I tried clicking the blank space to refresh it and nothing happened. Also, I read online that usually waiting fixes it, I left it on overnight and still nothing has popped up. Also, I've already tried resetting the PRAM, and nothing happened. If anybody can help me fix this it would be greatly appreciated. Either how to install Leopard again or how to start it up without the flashing question mark. Thanks!

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Unique "flash question folder" problem, doesn't boost from either HD/drive

Hello, I am pretending to be a Mac expert to my friends (Please don't laugh at me, Cornelius, Douglas, Duane or others). One of my friends went to me with a iBook G3 with a classic flashing question folder on screen. I promised her I would fix it next day. But now I am stucked on it. I thought it would just be an OS issue. It seems it is more complicated than that. I tried to install 10.4 from DVD, by restarting while holding down "C" key. It did not boost from there. Fine, it might just be an optical drive problem. I dived into the book, replace the HD with a known-good one having OS installed. The book still won't boost. Fine, it might be the a bad connection between HD/drive to the mother board. So I threw in a good signal cable. Nothing I have done really helped the boosting issue. I think I have to bring the same non-working book back to her on Tues or Wed. So embarrassed. Maybe you guys can help me out? Thank you.

There is an article on the flashing question mark that might be helpful:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042
It sounds like you might already have done more than was necessary, but it should be possible to get back in business. I'm not the one to advise you, as I am not all that experienced myself. But the more knowledgeable memebers of the forum should be able to help.
One thing--do you have all of the original install discs? If you don't, see if you can get them from your friend. You will probably need to have them on hand. Often people have to hunt for these, so you might be able to stall for a little more time while you get some answers from the forum. Also, the install discs will contain the Apple Hardware Test, which you can run and look for hardware problems.
Also, identify the iBook model more completely. Here's the article to find that out:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88039
Posting more detail will help others to advise you.
    Good luck!

  • Forwarded pictures turn into little squares with flashing question mark

Occasionally someone forwards me some email with supposed picture attachments but the pictures don't forward and are represented by little squares with flashing question marks.
    Any idea what causes this?
(I use Mac mail and Safari).
    -Louise

There are a few things that cause this, I've found.
Sometimes it's because the email includes images in a format that Mail doesn't like, but it can also be because the attached graphics had their names changed (or were deleted completely) by an outgoing- or incoming-mail virus scanner, or because the graphics weren't really included in the email, but were really just HTML links to images stored on a web site somewhere, and the site has gone down or moved the images.
You can usually tell which has happened by looking at the message's attachments. If there aren't any attachments, then either they've been deleted or stripped from the message, or the message points to dead Internet links.
If there are attached files, you can look at them to see if they have names that look funny (e.g., many virus programs add the word "DEFANGED" to file names), and might have been changed. Also see if they come up with the right icon (Picture icon saying JPEG, GIF, BMP, or PNG, usually). If they're just plain white generic file icons, then they might be something that your computer can't read.

  • Flashing Question Mark in 10.4.11

How does one go about obtaining the 10.4.11 startup disk while traveling, to resolve the flashing question mark issue? Can it be downloaded? Is there a temporary workaround I can use until I am back in the same city as my install disk?
I have access to other people's install disk, but they are from Macs with 10.5.7.

    ? Can it be downloaded?
    Nope, sorry.
    Is there a temporary workaround...
Possibly, try a Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Put this one in FW Target Mode…

Use Disk Utility on the other Mac to attemp a Disk Repair with Disk Utility.
I have access to other people's install disk, but they are from Macs with 10.5.7.
May or may not work if it's a Gray Machine speic Disc.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert that Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

  • Help PowerBook 150 not Run disket flash Question mark System 7.5.3 - 18 parts.

PowerBook 150 not Run disket flash Question mark System 7.5.3 - 18 parts.  Please Help !!!

    Hi,
First of all, in order to verify whether the 7.5.3 system software files are of the type earlier downloadable from Apple (with one large image file split onto floppy-sized segments), could you confirm that the first of the eighteen files has a file name with ".smi" at the end (before .bin or .hqx), and that the remaining seventeen files each include ".part"? The US version had totally nineteen files (one. smi and eighteen .part), but as I indicated above, this was different depending on language version.
If the PowerBook 150 is empty (without an operating system), you will need a startup floppy. Do you have access to a Disk Tools floppy for the PB 150? A Network Access Disk 7.5 floppy would be useful under all circumstances, and can be used as an alternative startup disk (and the system folder could be copied to the hard disk, and would then act as a temporary system). The problem today is that Apple's older software downloads list, which contained the Network Access Disk 7.5, does not appear to be available any more.
If you have the NAD 7.5 file already, the normal way of creating a bootable floppy was via a utility called Disk Copy (on another Macintosh computer with a built-in floppy drive). Disk Copy 6.3.3 can still be downloaded (https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1262). The Make a Floppy command under the Utilities menu is used to create properly sector-copied floppy disks. Please note that the Disk Copy utility is not needed or used to mount a self-mounting image (.smi).
There were special methods allowing an NAD 7.5 floppy to be made through a Windows PC as well (using a Windows version of StuffIt/Aladdin Expander and a utility such as WinImage).
It is also possible to obtain a version of StuffIt Expander for the PB 150 through a PC (but the PowerBook would need at least a temporary operating system first). With access to an older Windows PC (capable of running a DOS program) with a floppy drive, you may want to try the following: Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB diskette via FORMAT A: in DOS or the "full" formatting option under Windows. Download the MACDISK.EXE file from http://rrzs42.uni-regensburg.de/Macintosh/files/macftp.html . Run this MACDISK.EXE (DOS) program on the Windows PC. Follow the instructions on screen. The result will be a Mac-formatted (sic!) floppy that could be moved to and used with the PB 150. This floppy contains a StuffIt Expander installer. Once installed, drag downloaded .bin files onto the StuffIt Expander program icon to decode them.

  • TS1440 Flashing question mark, cancel, apple, and folder symbol.

My computer has been acting weird for the longest time, I used to have a done of room on it and one day it disappeared. So I started deleting stuff off of it, big apps and what not so I could have more space, I would gain little bit of space but then a second later it goes back to "Zero KG" so I'm thinking I should restart my computer.. So I turn it off, then turn it on, and flashing symbols come up. After multiple times of turning it on and off, I put in my startup disk, but I can't get past the choosing the start up disk because it says I have zero KG on the disk.. So I take the disc out and it goes back to the flashing question mark/apple/folder symbol..

    Hello,
Try holding the Option key at startup to see if you can boot off the Install Disc to repair the drive, or the c key.
    "Try Disk Utility

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
We need to clear some really big files off of it, like Movies, or I suspect some huge logs from something going wrong. 0 KB on the drive can ruin many files on there.

  • Flashing question  mark at boot

so it seems my hard drive won't mount... flashing question mark instead of booting.
I've read the discussions, which seem to lead to either a bad HD or logic board...
I've run both disk warrior and tech tool -- both show that the hard drive is okay -- disk warrior re-built the directory, which showed all the data where it was supposed to be... nevertheless, after running both, still the dreaded Q mark
(incidentally, or perhaps not so, all the tech tool tests were passed except the "surface scan"...?)
But the symptoms for a logic board issue that are outlined in these discussions (i.e., bad video or other display issues) were not problems prior to the failure. The only issue that presaged the crash was a recurring error box (over about two days) which i'd never seen before (and the content of which was somewhat cryptic and the text of which, I regret, I can't really recall)... the box was the full width of the screen, and in alarming all caps offered three buttons, side by side, which were in essence a quit option, a re-try, and a third ... sorry, I know that sounds lame, but it's the best I remember on that matter.
wrt that error box, the other salient (or perhaps not) point was that the box remained through a force quit of all apps, and even a relaunch of the finder...
thanks for any insight... for me, a $600 repair bill is simply not in the cards.

    The "flashing question mark" at startup is not all that uncommon a topic;
and it usually has some cures depending on exactly what caused it.
Apple Support documents about it are in the online archive and there also
may be some reference to this in a Mac's Help viewer.
"A Flashing Question Mark appears when..."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042
"...The possible causes and solutions for this symptom appear in the order
that you should try them. If any step resolves the issue, you don't need to
    continue to the next one..."
Since you mentioned another screen with dialog box on it, that
may have been related to a "kernel panic" and that is covered
    here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
With some more general -and lengthy- information about ways of
"kernel panic" resolution does continues over at a different site, here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Sometimes, if you don't see a different dialog box (like you said
you saw, prompting restart, etc) you could go into the System
Preference panel in the OS and be sure your Startup Disk is
selected in the so named panel. Occasionally that can cause
a minor error in which the computer later can't see the boot
volume on the hard drive. - Routine system maintenance helps
to keep on top of system health (and familiarity) ahead of time.

  • A flashing question mark on startup

My Mini is displaying a flashing question mark after startup. How do I fix it?

The flashing question mark indicates that your Mini cannot find a valid startup disk. Restart with the Install disk in place and hold down the C key and the Mini will start up from the CD. Repair the Mini's hard disk using Disk Utility on the Install CD (Look under the Apple menu).
