HTML rowspans and colspans...good or bad?

Okay, so I gathered pretty early on that the layout mode in
Dreamweaver was messy...however I never really understood why.
My HTML theory was learned through Dreamweaver not old school
hard coding.
Then I found a nice little posting on the use of Spans:
http://apptools.com/rants/spans.php
I believe this is the major flaw in the use of the Layout
mode, am I correct in this summation?
The poster suggests using nested Tables to securely lock down
the width and height of your tables/cells.
My question is, which poses the greater problems: having Rows
explode or Columns? I always thought HTML likes to "grow"
horizontally if it needs to, and that height could be "locked" down
fairly easily.
Secondly, should the merge/split cell feature in standard
mode be avoided as well? I gather this introduces the same issues
with Rowspan and Colspan.
So finally, is it ever wise to use Rowspan and Colspan? One
can overdue it with nested tables as well I imagine?

Yes.

That's incorrect. Table height is invalid HTML - always has
been.

Yes, unless it's used very sparingly to accomplish a specific
task.
> So finally, is it ever wise to use Rowspan and Colspan?
I could say no, but there are times were merging adjacent
cells can be
useful. However, I generally say this -
Instead of merging cells horizontally, terminate your table
and start a new
one. Instead of splitting cells horizontally/vertically, nest
a new table
with the desired structure.

  • Column header customization using rowspan and colspan

    Hi,
    I want to implement customized column header using rowspan and colspan.
    This can be done in html easily but not sure how I can implement in HTML DB.
    Anybody has idea?
    Thanks in advance,
    <table border="1">
    <!-- begin header -->
    <tr>
    <td rowspan="2">COL1</td>
    <td rowspan="2">COL2</td>
    <td rowspan="2">COL3</td>
    <td colspan="3">COL4</td>
    <td colspan="3">COL5</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td>COL4-1</td>
    <td>COL4-2</td>
    <td>COL4-3</td>
    <td>COL5-1</td>
    <td>COL5-2</td>
    <td>COL5-3</td>
    </tr>
    <!-- begin data -->
    <tr>
    <td>VALUE1</td>
    <td>VALUE2</td>
    <td>VALUE3</td>
    <td>VALUE4-1</td>
    <td>VALUE4-2</td>
    <td>VALUE4-3</td>
    <td>VALUE5-1</td>
    <td>VALUE5-2</td>
    <td>VALUE5-3</td>
    </tr>
    </table>

    Thanks Raj,
    you'd want to do this kind of formatting from your report template. we have a technote out on report templates at...
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/notes/technote_htmldb_format.html
    ...and, so you know, you'd want to enter your custom col header html into the "Before Rows" field of your template definition screen (kinda like step 8 that's above Figure 5 in the technote).
    hope this helps,
    raj

  • Rowspan and Colspan with h:datTable

    Hi,
    How to apply Rowspan in h:dataTable so that I can merge some of the columns in one row.
    I couldn't find any implementation of rowspan and colspan with h:dataTable.
    KP

    Why would you want to do that? the data table repeating every row, so if you combine 2 columns on 1 row, then it'll combine them all for all row. I think what you want is for gridpanel. This is not possible right now I think, but you can use plan old html for this. Mixing Html and JSF to get what you want.

  • Specifying rowspan and colspan in XML

    Hi All,
    My aim is to transform a XML file which contains description about input( text, button, checkbox etc) tags, rowspan, colspan, maxfield size etc into HTML tags.
    How should I specify all these attributes rowspan, colspan, maxfield size in XML to transform it into HTML.
    Which parser is going to do all these things?
    Thanks and Regards
    Vinay

    I would suggest using XSLT to transform XML into HTML.

  • Placing a PDF file in an InDesign Doc and PDF again for a vendor- Good or Bad?

    Current debate in the graphics department is
    Is it good or bad to place a PDF (general Press Quality) into an InDesign document and then creating a new PDF file with print vendor settings from that document?
    My thought is that you in some cases are double compressing, lower dpi images getting compressed, RGB color mode images okay on layout but now are converted to CMYK and shift in the PDF.
    Are there other issues and if so what are they.
    Also is there an easy way to check ppi, color mode and compression of an acrobat PDF? I mean other than doing a preflight and searching into each image folder twenty levels deep. FlightCheck and Enfocus are not options,
    too many vendors and not enough time.
    Thank you all in advance for your words of wisdom.

    Dov, I just got off the phone with a trusted professional in the Prepress field at a quite reputable print house, and he said "Dov is the guru of PDFs, ask him this...Will the InDesign CS3 preflight see the characteristics of a PDF (color mode, dpi(ppi), compression) if the original placed PDF is created as a pdf .X4 (1.7)? Ask him also if you were to use one form of compression (say lossless) in the original PDF, and then another form(say lossy) in the vendor PDF would it hold both or convert the first PDF compression to the second form?"
    Any other responses are also welcomed.

  • HT2105 When you get a apple receipt for itunes songs and you paid with a itunes gift card do they charge you or give you store credit what's store credit is it good or bad or does it charge you if you have a free account with no credit cards at all is it

    When you get a apple receipt for itunes songs and you paid with a itunes gift card do they charge you or give you store credit what's store credit is it good or bad or does it charge you if you have a free account with no credit cards at all is it bad?

    iTunes credits are, for example, if you download a song from the store and it's found to be corrupt - if the track can't be fixed then iTunes support will tend to give you a song credit for a free download.
    When you purchase music from the store then any credits that you have will be used first, then any balance that you have (e.g. from iTunes gift cards or allowances), and any remaining amount will be taken from your credit card.

    Why do videos look so bad in QuickTime X and look good in everything else?
    Any way around this or is this something apple needs to fix?

    OK, videos!
    What kind of videos?
    Have you tried using Quicktime Player 7?
    Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
    Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
    Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".

  • The difference between system restore and last good known configuration

    hi,
    what is the difference between system restore  and last good known configuration.
    in which situation you use system restore ,and in which situation you use last good known configuration.
    very short answer wil be enough.
    thanks
    johan
    h.david

    Last Known Good Configuration deals only with Starting Windows eg. a bad registry or incorrect driver is preventing Windows to start.It recovers the registry settings of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet
    While System Restore uses restore points to return your system files and settings to an earlier point in time without affecting personal files. Restore points are created automatically every week, and just before significant system events, such as the installation
    of a program or device driver. You can also create a restore point manually.You can undone system restore but there is no such option in Last Known Good Configuration.
    Last Known Good Configuration is disabled in Windows 8 or,Windows 8.1 by default.
    Try using Last Known Good Configuration if you can't start Windows, but it started correctly the last time you turned on the computer.
    Try using System Restore to return the system to an earlier point in time when things worked correctly.

  • Is this good or bad in terms of battery life?

    So I have a question, my usage is 1 hour, 11 minutes; standby is 13 hours, 29 minutes. This is since the last full charge on my iphone4s and now the battery is at 68%. Is this good or bad, and the thing is when I used certain apps like words with friends even for 2-3mins I actually noticed the battery life going down 2%, and I know that because I have the option for showing the battery percentage switched to on. It's frustating that I'm doing the simplest task like going through settings and the battery is draining so quickly. Does anyone have and suggestions about increasing the battery life?

    The short battery life is an issue of iOS5 that should be fixed with the next updates. ( also hope that Apple would fix it fast)

    Both HTML docs and links dragged from Firefox now fail -- error msg: THERE WAS A PROBLEM SENDING THE COMMAND TO THE PROGRAM -- last night, I had no problem: both types worked fine -- I never shut my HP laptop down -- now I'm afraid to -- I won't even close my Firefox browser -- maybe a TSR is continuing to wreak havoc with my system -- please help soon.

    If what you see is substantially different, though, I'd be interested in seeing it. (I can't e-mail you, though, as I don't know your e-mail address. You can find mine, though, by looking at the contact link at the bottom of any page on my site, listed in my profile here.)
    This is not a feature in adblock, I view it as a bug.
    I agree, it should not be doing that.
    My suspicion is that AdBlock works by adding this code to every page you view, thus rendering the advertising elements invisible. However, in the case of OWA, it must be inserting that code in a bad place, where it shows up in the message. Mail servers will be prone to rejecting such a message, probably because some of the strings that code uses to identify these ads might look malicious. There's nothing that I can see in that code that's actually malicious, though... just a bunch of CSS conditions that make matching elements invisible.

  • What is a good download broadband speed. Mine is 4.17mb/s. Is that good or bad?

    What is a good download speed. Mine is 4.17mb/s is this good or bad?

    It's average. Do you have cable or DSL? I'm moving into an apartment that has cable speeds of up to 20 megabits per second. Cable speeds do vary and, at the low end, run around 5 megabits per second.
    So - cable or DSL. If cable, call your local ISP and see if they have a package with higher Internet speeds.

  • Plsss help me: how to set default values in html:file and html:radio

    Hai,
    To set default value to text box i use the following code. It works well.
    <html:text property="modifyserverdesc" value="<%= serverDesc%>" styleClass="text" size="38"/>But for file i use the code
    <html:file styleClass="file" property="modifyserverimgfile" value="<%= serverImage%>" size="40"/>It doesn't display value. What is problem here?
    how to set default selection in <html:radio>.

    No it won't help.
    You can't set a value into an <input type="file"> control at all. The user has to put values in themselves.
    The reason behind this is security. If the programmer could put any value they liked in there, you could upload any file at all from a users computer without their intervention. eg C:\windows\system32\passwords.txt
    Bottom line: you can't put a default value into the input type="file" control.
    And a good thing too ;-)
