HTTP or HTTPS?

I'm a little confused on selecting HTTP or HTTPS..............................I understand one is secured but how should my set up be?
Web Access
Access Server
HTTP (HyperText Transport Protocol) is
the communications protocol used to connect to servers
on the World Wide Web. HTTPS uses SSL (Secured Socket
Layer) to encrypt data transmitted for higher security.
Select
HTTP or HTTPS. The default selection is HTTP.
Wireless Access Web
If you are using the Router in
a public domain where you are giving wireless access
to your guests, you can disable wireless access to the
Router’s web-based utility. You will only be able to access
the web-based utility via a wired connection if you disable
the setting. Keep the default,
Enable, to enable wireless
access to the Router’s web-based utility, or select
Disable
to disable wireless access to the utility.
Remote Router Access
Remote Management
To access the Router remotely,
from outside the network, select
Enable.
Management Port
Enter the port number that will be
open to outside access. You will need to enter the Router’s
password when accessing the Router this way, as usual.
Use https
To require the use of HTTPS for remote access,
select this feature.

My take on this is to use https where ever you can, keeping in mind that it has to be supported on both ends, both the client and server ends.  But especially for remote administration of the router, that should definitely only be done via https.

  • URL Rewrite Rule: HTTP to HTTPS Not Working

Here is my problem. I cannot get HTTP to HTTPS redirect to work using the URL Rewrite module. I am using version 2, by the way, which I understand is the latest version. I've also enabled the "Proxy Server" and Application Request Routing"
    features.
I've trolled through the Internet for 2 days now for solutions to my problem, including the ones provided by the TechNet forums and by MVP Scott Forsyth. I've tried over 30 solutions, and none have resolved my issue. Granted some of the solutions I've tried
may have been repeats of others. After trying so many, I have had a hard time discerning the differences. Does it really matter, for instance if the pattern match for the {HTTPS} input is specified as
"^off$" or just "off"? I see this discrepancy (among others) everywhere. It seems like there are so many variations out there. It is quite confusing for the uninitiated and the newbies like myself to the
URL Rewrite technology. I have enabled and consulted my "Failed Request Tracing Rules" logs but cannot make any sense of the cryptic information it is providing.
I just cannot get my reverse proxy server to redirect http requests from the Internet to https to my internal web server. When a user specifies "https://server1.xxxxx.com". he is able to access the internal server via the reverse proxy (IIS) server.
But when he specifies "http://server1.xxxxx.com" he receives "Server Error 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed."
At this point I am at my wits end, and am even considering configuring the protocol translation on our firewall. But this not my preference as it presents another layer of complexity, and device to troubleshoot later on. Below I've pasted my entire web.config
file with my most current version of the rule in question (in bold) for your review. I started to paste just the specific rule, but thought you might need to see the entire file in case something else may be conflicting with the rule.
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • SERVER.XML re-write problem when changing HTTP to HTTPS

    Hello,
I am using SUN ONE App server and had a problem with turning SSL on in order to use HTTPS.
What I did was that in GUI I selected a http listener under my instance and checked SSL/TLS Settings. I clicked Apply Changes button and I got a message saying that there wa a problem with XML-DOM. I checked my server.xml and found that its size was 0. It seems that it stopped re-writing it when it met the problem.
An interesting thing is that when I created an additional http listener with SSL at a different port, there was no problem.
It seems that the problem occurs only when I tried to change HTTP to HTTPS.
Is there anyone who can tell me why this happens?
I will appreciate any answers or comments.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Is your Implementation Class is still the same (as the old one), when you changed the pre-fix.
Just double click on the Implementation class and check whether the methods are still implemented or not.
    Thanks, Advay

  • What is the correct way to set a web application to use HTTP or HTTPS?

In the past I've always created an HTTP web application as the default zone. Then extended the web app, creating a new IIS website on port 443 and enabled SSL. This seems to have worked fine, but I recently read an article stating that it is not good to
extend a web app unless absolutely necessary. So can someone tell me what the proper way is to configure a single web application to work with HTTP and HTTPS?

Extending the web application to support both HTTP and HTTPS is a perfectly good method and in fact is the only way to have a web application support both so what you've done is fine.
If the web application will only use HTTPS, you can set this up when you first create the web application. Specify port 443 and the SSL option (and ensure the URL has an https://) when creating the web application. You'll need to install the certificate
in IIS once the web application has been created.

  • Web Dynpro application - HTTP or HTTPs

    Hi all,
when is a web dynpro application called over http and when over https.
I have a web dynpro application (SICF - Logon Standard - not SSL) but the application is sometimes triggered with HTTPS.
How can i find this out?
    regards

So If SSL is configured and installend on your System,
you can call your wd-application through HTTPS (beside HTTP) as well.
But if you enable SSL in SICF on the Logon,
only HTTPS will work, HTTP will not work anymore.

  • Redirect service from http to https, session is lost

I have setup two web sites using NT 4.0 IIS so that both
              "http://nossl/mybeanbeans" and "https://ssltest/mybeanbeans"
can execute the commerce server mybuybeans example.
              Then I modify the shoppingCartDetail.jsp and commandAssembler.jsp
(files attached) hoping that when I click the "Checkout" button
on the Shopping Cart screen, it will redirect the service from
              http to https.
The URL is redirected to "https" but it depicts the welcome page
instead of showing the Order Check Out page.
              Previous session information is lost.
              Can anyone help me?

the problem is when the cookie is exchanged between the browser
and the app server IE treats request coming from http://bc.com:7001
and http://bc.com:7002 as one and the same : so the browser maintains
the same session but netscape treats this as responses coming from two
different servers and hence u lost the session.
I assume u are having this problem with netscape and not IE.
the solution is set this property in the weblogic.properties file
              weblogic.httpd.session.cookie.domain=.bc.com

  • I oocasionally get an error msg "The connection was interrupted" with some reasons. Usually a reload works but sometimes I need to change the https to http to get the load.

The error msg states the site may be tempo unavailable or that I have a network problem; even trying to open a new tab will give me the same error. When I attempt to load my own website I get the "unsafe site" msg but switching to http from https allows my site to load. I can open a tab in Firefox ten times without a problem and then I'll get "The connection was interrupted" msg. I did a complete delete and reload of Firefox but the issue remains.

    see if this is helpful:

  • PORTAL ACCESS  THROUGH HTTP and HTTPS BOTH

    Hi,
Is it possible to make the portal listen on both http and https ports at the same time? What is the required configuration for the same?
Please let me know for any other details.
    Any input is highly appreciated.
    regards,
    Chandra

    Hello Chandra,
you can activate SSL in the J2EE engine and then you have both Protocolls avaliable. The documentaiton can be found at <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/f1/2de3be0382df45a398d3f9fb86a36a/frameset.htm">Configuring the Use of SSL on the SAP J2EE Engine</a>.

  • Help !!  its urgent !!! HTTPS to HTTP switching in weblogic App server !!

    Hi,
I am using servlets in Weblogic Server environemt. My client (browser based) switches
from HTTPS to HTTP and vice versa while accessing different servlets.
In IE application works fine but when using Netscape it fails in many parts .
I have read that there is a fix for Netscape , it goes like this
" Question : When a Netscape browser starts a session with WebLogic Server on an
HTTP page and then moves to an HTTPS page, a new session is created. How can I preserve
the session while switching to or from HTTPS?
Answer : The cookie WebLogic Server sends includes the port number. When the Netscape
browser sees a cookie with a different port number, it assumes the destination is
a different server, so it does not return the cookie to WebLogic Server. The way
to prevent this is to specify the domain name that WebLogic Server writes in the
cookie with the weblogic.httpd.session.cookie.domain property. For example:
    weblogic.httpd.session.cookie.domain=.mydomain.com "
I have tried this also by giving different versions of the above mentioned line in
    weblogic.properties file
    i) weblogic.httpd.session.cookie.domain=.myServerName
where myServerName is name of the machine in which Weblogic App server is running

Which ports are you using for HTTP and HTTPS?

Is the browser talking directly to WLS or going through another web server (and the
weblogic plug-in)? In the URLs being used from the browser, do you always uss the full
machine name (e.g., mymachine.mydomain.com) or are you trying to use just the hostname
(e.g., mymachine) or the IP address?

Answer : The cookie WebLogic Server sends includes the port number. When the Netscape
browser sees a cookie with a different port number, it assumes the destination is
a different server, so it does not return the cookie to WebLogic Server. The way
to prevent this is to specify the domain name that WebLogic Server writes in the
cookie with the weblogic.httpd.session.cookie.domain property. For example:
    weblogic.httpd.session.cookie.domain=.mydomain.com "
I have tried this also by giving different versions of the above mentioned line in
    weblogic.properties file
    i) weblogic.httpd.session.cookie.domain=.myServerName
where myServerName is name of the machine in which Weblogic App server is running

    try
    weblogic.httpd.session.cookie.domain=.myDomainName
where myDomainName is something like india.techspan.com, make sure you don't put
in the name of your machine. WLS doesn't care about that in this property.

    Hi,
I am using servlets in Weblogic Server environemt. My client (browser
    based) switches
from HTTPS to HTTP and vice versa while accessing different servlets.
In IE application works fine but when using Netscape it fails in many parts
I have read that there is a fix for Netscape , it goes like this

You may first contact your receiver partner for the HTTP version they support. There is a mismatch somewhere.
