HVX200 -- Mixed Timeline - Converting 720p30 -- 720p24

Shouting out to the PROs for this one. Just completed a shoot with the HVX200. Goal was to shoot all takes using 720p24 (not 24pn) mode (DVCPROHD of course). Turns out that the camera reset it's shoot settings when turned off so several of our takes ended up being shot at 720p30.
I'm working sequences individually (the 720p24's and the 720p30's) but need to assemble them back for final show. Knowing that I cannot placed mixed time-code based nests on a master 720p24 timeline, I figured the best way was to copy/paste my individuals into the master and then just re-render the "bad" 720p30's on the master timeline.
But as I expected, I get some strobing with that 720p30 footage on the 720p24 timeline.
Looking for some helpful hints in minimizing that "damage" of strobing. (frame rate conversion utilities, etc.)
Thinking of sending the 720p30 stuff to After Effects to do the conversion but kind of a hassle.
My thanks for all positive suggestions.
cheers

Okay, now you've got me thinking. My editing timebase is 23.98 but yes footage is 24p running at 59.94.
I let Final Cut determine my sequence settings upon dropping the first clip on to the sequence (the "do you want final cut to change sequence settings to match footage dialogue" box), and just began editing from there.
When viewing my sequence settings on the different sequences
my 720p24 stuff reads with the DVCPROHD720p60 with editing time base of 23.98
my 720p30 stuff reads with the DVCPROHD720p60 with editing time base of 29.97
This is a timebase thing isn't it. I shouldn't let FCP choose my timebase right?
Am I tracking your statement correctly?
Should I be editing either of my two different format(s) footage in a DVCPROHD720P60 Timeline wiht an editing time base of 59.94?
sheesh, am I a pain in the _____?

  • Media Managing to Prores for 5d clips on mixed timeline

Hi, I have a largish project (1TB footage) whitch is mainly SD but I have some 5d & Sony Ex footage.  The majorety of the timeline is SD but there is a little 5D/Ex whitch is native footage and has to render (it is a SD timeline).  Is there a way of converting the 5D/Ex clips I have used in situe (i.e. not having to convert the clip and redo cut).  I know I could just convert the whole timeline into prores but this is a feature doc and would take a long time and use a lot of disk space.  Also I am not ready to media manage for grading/sound edit (it is still a rough cut).
The reason I ask is I know this can be done with Avid if I consolidate.
    Any ideas?
    Ben

Move the clips you want to convert to their own video track.  Duplicate your sequence, delete the SD footage and media manage what's left.  Then replace the original tracks with the Mediamanaged tracks.

  • Mixing Timeline Sequence Settings

    Hey all,
I have this sitcom that I've filmed. Episodes 1-4 are shot with a Sony HDRFX7. And then for Episode 5 (finale) we filmed it with a different camera. JVC HD something.
Problem is, our opening title theme song clip is made up of clips from episodes 1-4. (works fine in those episodes)/
But the same clip show must be used in episode 5 (with clips from episode 1-4). But the timeline sequence settings are different now. So the opening theme got all messed up when i copied it into the episode 5 timeline.
Is there anyway to fix this issue? I haven't tried manually fixing it. But is there anyway to have two different sequence settings? Or any other suggestions?

Please provide detailed sequence settings AND footage settings... (in this case two footage settings). select your footage, hit command-9.

  • HDV timeline convert to SD

I have a movie on a timeline with HDV settings. Want to turn it into SD. How can I do that quickly and efficiently?

The quickiest way is to create a new sequence with SD settings (Apple Pro Res 422 NTSC or PAL for example) and then to edit (overwrite) your HDV Timeline in the new sd sequence.
FCP will warn you that the clip settings and the sequence settings do not match and will ask you if you want to change the sequence settings (SD) to match the clip settings (HDV), of course, you don't want...

  • Working Two Formats, one Timeline: DVPro 50 and DV HD

I am working with two formats and trying to make this process as smooth as possible, and it almost is in FCP 6.0. We haven't had too many issues, but there are issues non-the-less. So here is the background:
We have been doing a cooking show for 3 years now, the past two have been shot with DVPro 50, this year was shot with the Panasonic HPX 2000 (Cam A) and Panasonic HVX -200 (Cam B) using 720p 24pn. Both were shot in 16x9.
So, when we set up the master timelines, we've been using the DVCPRO HD-720p 24 Easy Setup as our default setup, so everything goes smoothly for the most part, except sometimes the footage which is shot with the DVCPRO 50 footage becomes choppy and uncooperative. The reason being (I Think??) is because this footage is shot in 29.97, then pulled down to 23.97, if that's right, then that might be the problem.
    My questions are:
    1) What, if anything can I do to smooth this workflow, so I don't come across these problems so frequently?
    2) Should I try to recapture the DVCPRO 50 footage in another setting?
I think that's it, all help is greatly appreciated, and thanks.

See that's the thing, I thought that FCP 6 would handle a lot of the mixed footage converting, and it has, some of the times. When I place the footage into the FCP 6 timeline it usually brings everything up to where it should be in the timeline, and that's where I thought I could handle the frame rate conversion.
Even though, we originally shot the DVCPRO 50 footage at 23.97 it still has to go through the frame rate pulldown to get from 29.97, and FCP usually handles that pulldown. But why is it only handling it some of the times?

  • When I insert photos into Premiere Elements timeline they become pixilated.  Has anyone a remedy?

The photos I insert into the timeline in Elements become pixilated.  They looked fine in the organiser.  Has anyone a remedy to this problem please?

    Judie Sutton
    Thanks for the additional information.
If rendering the Timeline content of those photos does not resolve the photo pixelation issue as per SG's question, then please read on.
    a. Do you have a mixed Timeline of photos and video? If so, what is the format of the video and how many of these
2799 x 3500 photos are included? Do you get photo pixelation whether you have 1 or many of these photos on the Timeline?
    b. What happens to the Edit area monitor view of one of these photos if you right click the Edit area monitor, select Playback Quality, and then compare the choices of Automatic vs Highest Quality? If you right click the Edit area monitor and select Magnification, do you find the Magnification set at the default "Fit"?
    c. Have the photos been edited in Photoshop before being imported in Premiere Elements. If so, what was the extent of the Photoshop editing including effects applied and color profile?
More later depending on your results and follow up.
    Thanks.

  • Transpose PS Channel mixer values to LR

I use presets of channel mixer for converting images to gray. The presets I have are based on RGB Values. How can I transpose that to the 8 channels on LR ?
In addition to transposing from 3 to 8 channels, I see that moving 3 channels to 0% make a black photo. When all sliders on LR are moved to -100%, the gray shades of original photo are not modified.
    thank you for your help.

You should try it and see the effect I am describing for yourself. Noise reduction is not helpful. When channel mixing is done correctly there is no need for noise reduction. The high-res sliders in Lightroom and ACR, though, do not do channel mixing. They operate on specific hues and can't be used as an equivalent to channel mixing no matter how you move them around.

  • Accessing document class function within timeline

Hi have a very simple question,
(Bear with me I'm still quite new to as3 and some of my terminology may not be solid)
I want to access a function that is within my document class when a movie clip on the timeline has played to a specific point (being the end).
I have already been able to call another function from the document class at the top/root level (it is called to initialize all clips and buttons when you click on the "enter" button on the splash screen.
Problem is that I cannot call another function (in the document class) from a movie clip within a movie clip on the timeline. Is there an easy way to do this? I have considered writing a separate class for the movie clip and then adding it onto the movie clip (using the property panel). I don't really want to do it this way because I am already using a base class on that movie clip and 3 others that use a set of generic functions.

    >>I want to access a function that is within my document class when a  movie clip on the timeline has played to a specific point (being the  end).
Your document class should add a listener to the clip and the clip should dispatch an event when it's complete. You could dispatch your own event or use one of Flash's like Event.COMPLETE. Something like:
    in clip
    dispatchEvent(new Event(Event.COMPLETE));
    and in your doc class
    clipOnTimeline.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, classMethod);
    >>I have already been able to call another function  from the document class at the top/root level (it is called to  initialize all clips and buttons when you click on the "enter" button on  the splash screen.
You really should avoid mixing timeline and document class code. Better would be for your doc class to add a listener to the button and call a method within the class when it's clicked.

  • Convert internal audio member from wav to mp3 or swa

    Hi
i have lots of audio files in wav format. they are already appear as cast members. now i need to convert them to mp3 or swa. the audio have cue points.
how can i see the type file of the audio member?
what i should do to convert those members to mp3 oe swa?
should i export wav and then import it as mp3? if so how wxcatly?
those members are wav, cuz in external editor i can see its wav.
the reason i need to compress is that i need to  play it over the internet.
im using director 11.5 in xp.
    please help
    Shay

If you are using cue points, then don't use MP3.  MP3s do not have cue points, so they will be removed.  In older versions of Director, there was an option to convert wav files to swa under the Xtras menu.  For some reason, that was removed from Director 11.  So, if it is a requirement that you use swa, then Have a look for an older version of Director (Dir MX 2004 or earlier) which can do the conversion.
In D11.5, you can use the new audio mixer to convert the files to mp4.  I'm not sure if that will work for you, but it is worth a try.

  • Will this work? 24 mix with HVX

I want to shoot 720 24pn on the HVX
Than work on a 24 fps timeline using the
    HV20-
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306389
DVX- F6 ADV Mode for pulldown
Just need to know if this is a usable set up. Or should I skip it and shoot 60 across the board and not deal with a pulldown.
    Thanks

If you are going to mix HDV and DVCPRO HD, you'd really be better off getting a capture card and capturing the HV20 footage as DVCPRO HD right off oft he camera. Decklink has the HD Extreme for only $1000, and it can do this for you.
Because that little article shows you how to get 24p off of that camera from a 29.97 stream...it says NOTHING about getting it out of HDV and into DVCPRO HD.
Or are you hoping that the FCP 6 mixed timeline will work for this?
    TEST TEST TEST!!!
The only way to know if things work. TEST before you commit.

  • Is 1080 at 24 the same as 1080p24?

    Hi,
I'm a little confused. I'm trying to output a 720p24 HDV project for viewing on an HDCAM deck that only handles 1080i, but WILL do 24fps. I need to use Compressor to recompress it, and I'm only finding 24 fps settings when talking about 1080p, not 1080i. Is this the same?
    Thanks

Kona 3 is the only card that will cross-convert from 720p24 to 1080p24 (or PsF24)
PsF=Progressive Segmented Frame. This is Sony's implementation of progressive frames. It is the method in which a progressive frame is recorded to tape.
With a decklink card you would need to paste your sequence into a 1080p24 timeline and render it, then output at 1080p24 to HDCAM.
Frame rates: When most people talk about 24p what they really mean is 23.976 which is abbreviated to 23.98. 23.98 is compatible with NTSC in that when you add 3:2 pulldown you get 29.97. It is intended for footage that will stay in a digital realm. (Experts, I know I'm oversimplifying) True 24p is just that, video that runs at 24 fps. The Sony Cine Alta line of products support this frame rate. It is generally intended for porjects that will end up on film. However 23.98 can easily be transferred to film as well. Confused yet? It's a beast to wrap your head around. Just know that unless you shot with high end camera (I'm talking about an F23, a Viper, etc) your 24fps footage is really running at 23.98fps.
So the ultimate question becomes are you on the West Side or are you closer to the Valley and is it worth it to spend the money to do this right? If it is worth it to do this right then I would suggest going to West Post Digital in Santa Monica or Alpha Dogs in Burbank to do your layoff.
Take a self contained QT that matches your sequence settings to either of these places and they will know what to do.

  • DVCPRO HD for Web Use

    Hi Guys,
Were filming our promo video using the HVX200 and are recording at 720p24. Once we have finished it we have to deliver it in a variety of formats. One of these will be for our website.
Now if this is a simple procedure please do forgive my ignorance. But how can we get the 16.9 ratio DVCPRO HD Footage to a 16.9 'web-ready' quicktime movie. Do we use compressor's presets or is there another way of doing this?
Your help will be very much appreciated!

    Dual 2.3Ghz PowerMac G5, 1.5 Ghz Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    It is very simple...
When you have finished cutting you video, put in and out points on the timeline where you want it to start and finish.
    Then go File>Export>Using Quicktime Conversion.
Then click on 'options', in the video box click settings, for compression type use H.264, for frame rate just put auto, Data Rate auto, Compressor, depending on the size you like, I suggest low because you can get a small file with still alot of quality. Then click OK.
Then click "size" choose 'custom' and put in your dimensions (maybe 640x360 for a large and 320x180 if you want a small version) then click OK
In sound box click settings, for format choos 'AAC' then leave everything else the same. click OK.
Then make sure "prepare for internet streaming is 'checked'" choose where you wish to save it to and export.
This is the best way to keep the highquality and have it on the web. To view it you need Quicktime 7, which is a free program so this shouldn't be a problem

  • Dvcpro hd frame rate convertor

i shot 720p at 60fps but it plays normal in my sequence and i can't convert it to slow motion in my timeline using dvcpro hd frame rate convertor. the option isn't greyed out but does nothing when is select it. am i doing something wrong?

My timeline is ALSO 720p24 with most of my footage at 23.98. I have footage shot 60p that I can either cut in and render so that it matches the 24p look, OR I can use the DVCPRO HD frame rate converter and slow it down 2.5 times to make excellent slow motion.
It works. BUT...as I was saying, there is a bug in which for some reason it might NOT work in the current project you have. JUST THE CONVERSION. What I do is make a new project, drag the file to convert into that...convert it, drag it back and use it. Then all is well.

  • Max Resolution for a QuickTime Movie?

I have made a QT movie and am trying to get it to play on my Apple TV.
I have set the resolution for 1280x720, but iTunes will not sync this to the Apple TV because it says the file is incompatible with Apple TV. I thought Apple TV supported 720p.
Can anyone please advise on the maximum resolution I can set for the QT to be viewable on my Apple TV?
    Thanks in advance.

I have a bunch of 720p30 home videos that I converted to 720p24 and 540p30 to compare.
What did you use for conversion? Did it have a frame "blend" option and if so, did you use it. Many applications (like QT) use a simple drop/add frame algorithm when changing frame rates.

  • How to use TextFormat on multiple frames

I must be missing something, but how on earth do I make it so
that I can set TextFormats for the whole movie and not just the
    frame the actionscript is on.
My movie is basically a video with cuepoints that trigger
different keyframes that display text appropriate to what the
person featured in the video is talking about. In other words it's
like a powerpoint presentation that's run by an FLV file. Almost
all of the blocks of text I'll be displaying are bulleted lists and
since, for some odd reason, bulleted lists aren't available using
the standard Flash GUI text formating tools I need to apply them
via ActionScript. All the ActionScript is in its own keyframe at
the beginning of the movie timeline. I've setup my text formating
    code like this:
    var bulletlist:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
    bulletlist.bullet = true;
    bulletlist_field.setTextFormat(bulletlist);
While I have successfully applied this to a box of text on
the first frame of the movie, I haven't be able to apply it to text
on any other keyframe. So from what I can tell, I have to reference
the above TextFormat actionscript for every frame I need to use it
on, and since I can't have duplicate TextFormat values, that means
I'd have to create a new instance with a new name for each frame.
This seems rather inefficient and frankly ridiculous consider that
the other ActionScript that I wrote seems to apply to the whole
movie. And what's the point of using ActionScript to format text if
you have to redo it for every *******' keyframe? Is there some
function that I'm missing somewhere to allow me to use one set of
TextFormat code on multiple frames or is this simply a dysfunction
    of Flash and/or ActionScript 3.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Craig Grummitt - Why so it is. Thanks for pointing that out.
But my point still remains: You can change the defaultTextFormat
property before you assign the text property or you can use
setTextFormat() after you have assigned the text property. That one
is a property and the other is a method just makes it more likely
that somebody will over look one or the other!
fallenturtle - part of the issue is that really great
typographic stuff is tough and most people can't even use the
simple tools that we have. For use with CS4 and Flash 10 publishing
they are coming out with a far more complex Text Layout Framework.
As best I can tell it is insanely complex and I'm guessing most
people will never use it....but who knows.
Additionally you are trying to do one of the more difficult
things: mix timeline with code. That always gets tricky. If you
were just using code you could create one textformat instance and
apply it to all your code-created text fields. But since each
timeline created clip is a new one you will need to apply the
    formatting by hand.
Or you could just have one timeline created text field that
went across all your frames and then change its properties with
code everytime you needed to change it.
