Hyperlink in Table of Contents

Hi.
I can make page numbers in TOC to act like a hyperlink (Inspector//Document Inspector/TOC/ tick "Make Page Numbers Links"), but is it possible to make the whole paragraph in TOC to become a hyperlink? It's much easier to click on paragraph.
Thanks
Miran

Thank you both Fruhulda and Peter. In meantime I learned that once exported to pdf, TOC hyperlinks works. And that's exactly what I wanted.

Miran

  • Word to PDF does not keep hyperlinks in Table of Contents ?

I have used my free trial of Adobe CreatePDF before purchasing the annual subscription.
I was surprised to see that the PDF document did not keep the clickable hyperlinks that Word uses in a Table of Contents. As this is the exact same behaviour as the "Save as PDF ..." option that I have natively available on my computer I don't see the point of paying a subscription to the service. Or am I doing something wrong?
    MAC OS X Lion (10.7.2)
    Office for Mac 2011
150-page .doc document with Section, Chapter, and various Heading Styles defined
    WORD automatically-built Table of Contents
In the WORD document, the page numbers in the Table of Contents are hyperlinks to the concerned page
Convert WORD to PDF using "Save as PDF ..." option in the "Print..." dialog box
====> Table of Contents hyperlinks are not preserved (the page numbers are no longer clickable)
Convert WORD to PDF using Adobe CreatePDF
====> Table of Contents hyperlinks are not preserved (the page numbers are no longer clickable)
Am I missing something or is this the way it is intended (not) to work?
P.S.: I know that, on the MAC, I can use Preview to manipulate the PDF document I obtain through "Print..." > "Save as PDF...". One of the things I can do is to select the page numbers in the Table of Contents and add a 'link' to each. But this is a VERY cumbersome process. Actually, I have to create a link for each page number, one at a time, on a table of contents that may consist of in excess of 50 entries. As I have a collection of 50-odd documents and am on a schedule of distributing new versions every two weeks or so, this procedure is completely unusable. Hence my search for a (paid) service that converts my documents while preserving the hyperlinks of the Word-created Table of Contents. Either I am doing something wrong or such service does simply not exist ...

    Good day fgrexsg,
You are correct in that the workflow you described will not produce links in the resulting PDF files.  The steps that Lori outlined work great if you're working on Office for Windows in terms of getting the links to work when converting using the CreatePDF service.
In order to make this work on the Mac, you'll have to take a few extra steps within Office first.
You're going to have to repeat this step for each item in your TOC.  While this will be time-consuming for a 150-page document, it will work.
Within your TOC, highlight the entire entry listing (e.g. Topic 1.........3)
Once the entire line is highlighted, choose Insert > Hyperlink
Click 'Document' to select a location within the current document.
Under the 'Anchor' option, either type in the Heading/Sub-heading (must be exact) of the page you want the hyperlink to attach to or click 'Locate' and find the proper Heading/Sub-heading within the structure.
As I said, this will probably be time-consuming on such a large document, but it will work.
Unfortunately Office for Mac just simply isn't as full-featured as its Windows counterpart.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
    Kind regards,
    David

  • Add Hyperlink to table cell content dynamically

    Hello,
I have a xdp form created in Livecycle designer. We populate a table by dynamically merging XML to this xdp form uing livecycle FormServices.
    For example:
    the XML:
    <data>
    <person>
         <name> George</name>
         <age>11</age>
    </person>
    <person>
         <name> John</name>
         <age>30</age>
    </person>
    </data>
    populated in table of pdf:
    Name
    Age
    George
    11
    John
    30
How do I add the hyper link to "George", "John" programmatically, so it can be link to some other URL.
    Thanks,
    Joanna

So my table is like this:
    Product
    Price
    Apples
    1.29
    Oranges
    2.49
    Grapes
    1.99
and my XML is like this:
    <
    Product ProductType="Apples">
    <URL>www.apples.com</URL>
    <Price>1.29</Price>
    </Product>
    <
    Product ProductType="Oranges">
    <URL>www.oranges.com</URL>
    <Price>2.49</Price>
    </Product>
    <
    Product ProductType="Grapes">
    <URL>www.grapes.com</URL>
    <Price>1.99</Price>
    </Product>
What I want to do is populate the table from the XML file, and make the URL element be linked from the product name (Apples for instance) at runtime  when I fill the table.  Any ideas?

  • Table of Contents retains hyperlinks but Table of Figures/Tables does not

I am beyond frustrated with this strange problem. I am converting a thesis from word to PDF, and I need to retain all bookmarks and hyperlinks in my Table of Contents, Table of Figures, and Table of Tables.
When I convert over (with all accesibility options selected, as well as bookmarking options), I am able to get my bookmarks to convert over AND hyperlinks for the table of contents.
However, no matter what I do, the hyperlinks in the Table of Figures/tables will not move over. What is different about those? What can I do to get them to link? It is a very long document, so doing the hyperlinks by hand would be incredibly tedious.
    Any advice/help?
    I'm using Acrobat Pro.

You will need to script the Word object.  Look in the repository for examples of using Word from PowerShell.
    Here too:http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2010/06/24/hey-scripting-guy-how-can-i-use-windows-powershell-to-add-hyperlinks-to-a-word-document.aspx
You will need to become proficient in PowerShell as well as learning the MSWord object model.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Table of Contents Hyperlinks

OK, so I've read the Adobe blog at http://blogs.adobe.com/acrolaw/2011/03/ensuring-that-word-tocs-create-hyperlinks-in-acroba t/ regarding how to ensure that the hyperlinks in a Word document's table of contents (I've enabled hyperlinks in the TofC as a default), and done everything the blogger recommended.  And I still cannot get hyperlinks to appear in pdfs I make using the Create PDF command in Word.  Any help out there?
I'm using Word 2007 and Acrobat Professional version 9.

It might be that the links are not enabled.  On the Word ribbon, go to the Acrobat tab and click on Preferences. In the Settings tab, make sure that there is a check mark for Add Links.

  • Table of Contents links and hyperlinks lose accuracy in FP past 5 pages?

I've come up dry searching for any mention of this bug
    anywhere.
We've got Word documents that have a table of contents (TOC
created dynamically in word, using the standard "Heading" style
method.) When we convert these to Flashpaper SWFs, about 50% of the
TOC links don't work - they go sort of nearby spots in the
document, but bring you to a spot off by half a page or more. The
links to spots in the first 4-5 pages work ok, but TOC links that
go deeper into the doc - from 5 to 20 pages in - those are off by a
half page to a page. The working TOC links in Word or in PDF
versions of the doc take you directly to the right spot.
The "outline" option in flashpaper also fails - the outline
links past 5 pages or so are innacurate just like the in-document
    links.
According the the (scanty) documentation for Flashpaper,
Heading/Outlines, etc. are supposed to work fine and get converted
    into the SWF.
I've already tried creating fresh example files, to make sure
it isn't a problem with sloppy Word formatting, extra Headings,
etc. - no dice. I still get TOC and outline links that fail to work
in many cases. They mostly fail for things that jump to spots after
5-6 pages into the doc. But if I convert these same docs to PDFs,
the PDF bookmarks and TOC links and hyperlinks work perfectly.
We've also tried using Hyperlinks in Word to create "pretend"
Table of Contents (not dynamic, but we're desperate), and we find
that those hyperlinks that go past 5 or 6 pages into the 20 page
doc lose their acuracy also - they are a half to a full page off.
We already tried the method of saving the word docs as HTML
then converting to FP(suggested within this board) but that did not
    improve things.
    Thanks in advance.
    - Chris

We solved our issue. In our case we have Word 2007, but our
client is still on Word 2003 so our Word document was originally
created in Word 2007 and then converted by Word 2007 into the Word
2003 format. It appears that we were having these problems because
we were running Flashpaper on the coverted Word document. A
document converted this way is internally different than a document
created by the Word 2003 application.
To fix the problem we downloaded the Word 2003 application,
created a new Word 2003 document, copy and pasted the contents of
the converted Word document into the document created on Word 2003,
and then ran Flashpaper on the new Word 2003 document. Problem
    solved.

  • Table of contents page numbers to PDF hyperlinks ??

    Help!
Is it possible to have InD create automatic hyperlinks when it exports Table of Contents lines.  The idea would be that when someone clicks on a line in the TOC in the PDF file, it automatically takes them to the proper page.  I know it is possible to do this individually using Acrobat Pro.  I'm wondering if InD can set up the TOC to create the links automatically upon exporting to PDF.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I am having problems trying to do this very thing,  I have a book of about 350 pages and I have my table of contents, but I cannot figure out how to make the Table of Contents where you can click in the PDF to take you to that page.
There surely has to be an automatic way of doing this...Im in CS5
    Please advise.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How can I Create Hyperlinks on a computer generated Table Of Contents?

I am trying to create hyperlinks on a TOC that was generated in InDesign CS3. It will allow me to make each item a new hyperlink destination, but I would like it to be just a new hyperlink. Is there a way to do this without having to re-type the whole Table of Contents?

Are the hyperlinks you want to make supposed to go to specific pages of the document, or to a url.
If it's to go to pages of the document, then click the Create Bookmarks when creating the TOC, it's in the bottom left, you may need to Show Options in the TOC dialog box.
If it's for a URL, or to link to a different page other than what the TOC points to, then you can
    New Hyperlink Destination
    Choose URL/Page
    Insert a unique name
    Insert the url/page no.
    Then say ok
    Go to Hyperlink Options
    Type: URL
Name: Choose the unique name you've created
URL: it should show up as what you've put in the Name, if not just type it in
    similar for page no.
Remember to inlcude bookmarks and hyperlinks when creating the PDF too.

  • Creating a Kindle-friendly table of contents with pages

I'm trying to figure out how in Pages (I just recently bought it and want to use it instead of Word) to create a Kindle-friendly table of contents, so readers can click on a chapter title and go straight to that chapter, for the fiction I want to publish on Kindle. In Word I right click on Heading 1 while the chapter title is highlighted then click Update to Match Selection. Then I create a hyperlink to that chapter title to its corresponding title in the table of contents. This does not work in Pages. Do I need to use the hyperlink option in Inspector? If so I don't know how.
And does anyone know how I can create what Kindle calls "Guide Items", where Kindle users can go to from anywhere within the book?
I suppose I can write everything in Pages and then set up the table of contents and guide items in Word but it would be nice to be able to do it in Pages, thanks.
    Lyle

Well there is a standard body for EPUB - http://idpf.org/epub
And, Apple furnishes the TEMPLATE - the Pages 09 TEMPLATE - automatically (supposedily) makes the TOC links which - then - you can export to EPUB.
Again, the problem I'm daling with is that the Kindle for the iPad, does not see the TOC. It des see it in the Kindle Softward for the Mac - which is different - for some reason. I have authored two books on Pages but Amazon converts my EPUB file to fit the Kindle device itself.

  • InDesign Table of Contents won't display once exported to pdf

    Hello,
I am creating user manuals using Indesign books with CS5. When I export the book, I can view everything perfectly. But when I open the same file from a different computer, I get a message saying:
"An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the pdf document to correct the problem."
And two pages are blank - the table of contents. If you hover the cursor over the blank pages, the cursor changes and indicates the hyperlinks, and the hyperlinks still work, but since you can't view the text it's not very helpful.
Both computers are using Acrobat 9.
    Any ideas?

I systematically removed elements from the pages in turn and I think I've found the issue. I have a header/footer created in illustrator on the master pages for all the documents in the book, and when I remove it from the Table of Contents, it shows up just fine. Odd that it doesn't affect the other pages.
Thanks for your quick responses. Consider the problem solved.

  • Acrobat X, Word 2011, and Links in Table of Contents

I have a 300+ page document in Word 2011, with a Table of Contents that has been automatically generated by Word, based off headings.
When I "print" the document using "Save as Adobe PDF" from the Print dialouge, the PDF comes up, but the links in the ToC no longer work.
I've looked online for a solution, but I am noticing two things:
    1) The option to turn the ToC links into Hyperlinks is not present on the Mac version of Word (2011).
    2) I opened the file in Word 2010 on a PC, and enabled the above feature, and then brought it back to my Mac and Word 2011 - the links now seem active in Word.  However, when I convert it to PDF, the links still do not work in the PDF.
Is there an automated way to make the links convert, or to add them to the PDF?  With 300+ pages, a Table of Contents with working links is almost essential for navigation.
    Thank you!

That's a defect (bug) in Adobe(Mac) that has been going on for 15 years and Adobe refuse to admit it and fix it. In Reference to Links.
The only work around is to use iWork's Pages.
The links should be active. Then Create the PDF from there The links should be live.
I've heard you can do the same thing with Preview, But haven't tried. I know Pages will.
Its no wonder that Apple won't allow Flash on the iPad. Besides not fixing Flash issues on the Mac paltform, They have a history of refusing to fix problems with Acrobat on The Mac Platform.

  • Including Tagged Text in a Table of Contents

I would like to include only a few words from a given paragraph in the Table of Contents.
For example in the example paragraph, I would like only the term Blather to appear in the TOC "Blather - Blah blah blah blah."
Is there a way I can tag "Blather" and then have the TOC dialog include Tagged Text?
    I'm using CS 5.5.
    Thanks you.

    Thanks Peter,
I like the auto-updating feature of the second option.
So that I understand, you're suggesting I create a hyperlink destination on the text to display in the TOC (right-click --> Interactive --> New Hyperlink Destination), and then manually insert a cross-reference to that hyperlink destination in my TOC (Type --> Hyperlinks & Cross-References --> Insert Cross-References --> Link to: Text Anchor)?

  • Can I create a Table of Contents (CS6) in a separate document of book file?

I'm helping someone create an ebook. He has three separate sections of his book so there are three files that make up the Indesign book. I currently have a table of contents at the beginning of each of the three sections and when I pdf the book, it works great. But when I export it as a Kindle ebok, only the TOC for the very first section works. I don't know how to fix it so that I can have multiple TOCs so if anyone knows, I would welcome advice on that! Otherwise I was thinking of just having one TOC in a separate file so my book would be made of a TOC and then the three sections of the book. But when I create a new document and try to add a TOC, it won't do it because the doc is blank. I'm sure there must be a way to have a separate document for a TOC that is actually functional when the book is exported.
    I hope this makes sense!

    Hi,
If you need TOC for each file in itself then while creating TOC, select 'Make text anchor in source paragraph' and it will make TOC as hyperlinks in exported epub.
If you need TOC in a separate document, then add a new document to book and while creating TOC in this document select 'Include Book Documents' and it will bring styles from all documents in the book in this document and then you can create a TOC for all the document. Also select 'Make text anchor in source paragraph' so that it will work as hyperlink in exported epub.
And if you do not even want to place TOC in your document and need it in exported epub then create a TOC style in source document of book which is a TOC for all documents in book. When exporting to EPUB, select 'TOC Style' in Navigation drop down and then select your created TOC style in next drop down.
    Thanks

  • Table of Contents will not export to PDF

CS3: I have an InDesign Book with 10 documents in it. The first document is the Table of Contents which was created using ID's TOC feature.
When I go to export that document to PDF, it acts like it's working, but the PDF is not made. There is no trace of a PDF in the folder.
If I delete the Table of Contents text the file will make a PDF.
If I try to export the entire book, the whole process just crashes.
I tried exporting the doc to .inx (which I was able to do) and make the PDF and the same thing happens.
Of course, this is a 300 page book and I'm on a deadline...
The book also has bookmarks and hyperlinks throughout -- not sure if that would cause a problem
    Thanks for any thoughts! Jodi

There are some known problems with bookmarks and CS5 as well. As far as I know, the 7.0.3 update won't fix them, but it does solve some other problems, so you should install it.

  • How do I create a Table of Contents page for ePub that link?

I am new to E-Publishing, I have been able to my overall book but cannot figure out the Table of Contents. I need them to link to the chapter page. I have created a table of contents and they dont link. I tried to create hyperlink within the document but they only work in the pdf version and not the ePub. What can i do so that they link in the ePub version as well ?
I dont know if this information would be helpful but I also wanted to mention that All the chapter names are set to the same style, and that the Table of content I have created so far was made through the TOC option in InDesign. Also the layout is fixed and I am using InDesign CC 2014

Make sure the TOC is in the style source document
Thank you so much! This was the thing I did wrong. There had been another document marked for style source. Now it works perfectly.
