InDesign Table of Contents won't display once exported to pdf

Hello,
I am creating user manuals using Indesign books with CS5. When I export the book, I can view everything perfectly. But when I open the same file from a different computer, I get a message saying:
"An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the pdf document to correct the problem."
And two pages are blank - the table of contents. If you hover the cursor over the blank pages, the cursor changes and indicates the hyperlinks, and the hyperlinks still work, but since you can't view the text it's not very helpful.
Both computers are using Acrobat 9.
Any ideas?

I systematically removed elements from the pages in turn and I think I've found the issue. I have a header/footer created in illustrator on the master pages for all the documents in the book, and when I remove it from the Table of Contents, it shows up just fine. Odd that it doesn't affect the other pages.
Thanks for your quick responses. Consider the problem solved.

  • Pages 5.0 (2013 Mavericks) Table of Contents loses page links when exported to PDF

I'm using the new Pages 5.0 in Mavericks.  I have a TOC with page numbers that link to the sections in my document.  The links work fine in Pages.  When I export the document to PDF, the page numbers are no longer links.
I tried the same in Pages '09 (which I still have on my computer) and the links work fine after exporting to PDF.
Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and introduced a swag of bugs.

Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Archive/trash Pages 5 and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

Export the pdf from indesign some error Pop Up window (Failed to Export the PDF file). How slove the problem
Please some one help on this

You need to try exporting the first half of the book.
If that exports ok then export the other half of the book.
Whatever half it fails on - keep dividing the book in half to find the culprit page or pages.
For example if your book is 128 pages long:
    1. Export pages 1 - 63
    2. If these Fail to Export then
    3. try exporting1-32
    4. If these Fail to Export
    5. then try exporting1-16
If it doesn't fail (step 2)
    Then export pages 64-128
    and 64-90 etc.
until you find the pages causing the issues.

Set up the Preflight panel so it checks image resolution. Ask your printer what the appropriate resolution is for your printing process, and set that in Preflight.

  • Content won't display in iTunes

So i have the new shuffle, and i have put about 80 songs on it and it works fine... BUT, when hooked up to iTunes, i wanted to check the contents of my new shuffle, maybe remove a couple of songs, but the content won't appear on the screen, although there are tracks on my shuffle.
I have done the restore, restart, etc. but still nothing. Therefore i have no problems putting tracks on my shuffle, but no way of removing tracks without having to restore factory settings and delete the lot.
    Help will be much appreciated.

  • Table of Contents (.hhc) Not displaying in Web browser

    Hi,
I have just upgraded Robohelp Version 7 to 9.0. I have table of contents(.hhc) in the left frame and "Updates_and_Revsions.htm" in the right frame. After my first TOC update in the Robohelp version 9.0, i am not able to see anything in my left frame. It is blank.
After basic research I was able to figure it out that .hhc was converted into XML file. Here is the code (I have long TOC so i am copying only first few). I am using internet explorer 7.0.

  • Layered text and graphic in Word won't display when converted to PDF

I have several simple shapes with text layered in front in my Word document. After they are converted to PDF using Acrobat XI, only the shape will display. I can tell the text is still there, because I can use my cursor tool to select it, but it won't display visually. It looks like it isn't there but it really is. One bit of text is even an internal link, and the link still works but I can't see the text I'm clicking on.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.
    Thank you,

Hi Lori - this was perfect! It was an issue with the layers being misordered. I used the Edit Text & Images tool listed under Tools > Content Editing, found the layers, then by right-clicking I was able to bring the text to the front and it all looks great now.
I would like to know why this happened, or if not why, how I could make sure it doesn't happen again. If there's a check box or other setting I could use to remove this problem that would be fantastic.
Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction!

  • Table of Contents links not working after conversion to PDF

I have created links in a MS Word 2007 document, including in a Table of Contents, a List of Tables, as well as internal cross-reference links.  I have converted to a pdf file using Acrobat 9 Pro.  All the links were retained except for the page links in the Table of Contents.  Does anyone have any insight into how to correct this error?

    MG,
You can get links to work in Numbers documents that have been converted to PDF, but it's quirky.
No links survive Printing to PDF
Links outside of tables (links in text boxes, etc.) survive Export in Sheet View
Links inside and outside tables survive export in Page View

  • Why does object sequence change once exported to PDF?

I have a two-page spread that shows exactly how I want it to in Preview.  But once I export to PDF the sequence of the objects has changed (blocking an object that needs to be on top).  I can see the object when the pdf is opened, but just for a second.  I don't know if this is an InDesign problem or an Acrobat problem.  I'm using CS4 and exporting to Acrobat 8.
In the file "Step" and "Out" should be on top.  "Step" gets covered up, but "Out" does not.

This is the cross-spine bug. You have four choices:
    1) Take this back to CS3.
    2) Reconstruct things on your master spread so that text boxes don't cross the spine.
    3) Move the problematic cross-spine elements off the master onto a live page.
    4) Wait for a patch. A number of people have been bit by this, but the only reports I've seen have been quite recent, all in the last few months.

  • InDesign doesn't let embed the font while exporting to PDF

I used a font while working on a document in InDesign and later while exporting to PDF I got a warning that the software is unable to include that font.
Is there a way to go around it? It was a free cyrillic font and it's not possible to buy it. I suppose creating outlines is not the right way to go
    Thanks in advance

    Eugene Tyson wrote:
… Most free fonts that I know of don't allow embedding - for this reason it's not a good idea to use a free font. …
I'm no particular fan of so-called “free fonts” — you most often get exactly what you pay for. However, that having been said, in my years of gathering such fonts for debugging and problem solving, in fact very few of them are actually set with the protection bits to prohibit embedding. For TrueType and OpenType fonts, you can readily check outside of InDesign as to whether a font is embeddable in a PDF file. For Windows, right-click on a font file and check the properties; embedding privileges are described in one of the tabs. For MacOS, the FontBook utility can provide the same information for a font.
The problem is that when you attempt to use a font that is physically protected against embedding, you pretty much need to follow the advice given by Eugene. Personally, I would recommend the use a different font option, checking the font prior to using it for your rights to embed it in PDF.
Note that font licensing is legal minefield. Many fonts that are posted on-line are not really free. Some are shareware with restrictions in their written licenses that require payment for commercial use (often in ReadMe files which may somehow be “lost” when such fonts are reposted over and over again) or even pirated fonts (i.e., commercial fonts simply illegally posted on-line).
My personal recommendation is that for any commercial use, you explicitly license your fonts from a known, reliable source to avoid possible legal issues in the future.

  • Images will not display on Export to PDF

I have a BOXi Web Intelligence Document that displays two images that are 7kb each.
The Text for one of the objects is set to:
    http://cpolrhp.belvoir.army.mil/eur/images/CHRA_Logo.gif
That object is set to read the text as:
    Image URL
The images display on the report in web intelligence but they do not export to PDF when I select save to my computer as PDF.
Any help on this would be a great help!!

    Hi Christopher,
The behavior experienced by you is quite strange.
When we save the document with image as Excel, the image goes missing and this is a known limitation but we can save it successfully to PDF.
Suggest you to check for the Adobe version.
You can also follow these steps:
follow these steps to correctly redefine the object so that it appears on each page:
    1. Open the report.
    2. In the report, right-click on the image and go to Format Cell > "Alignment" tab.
    3. Check the option "Repeat On Every Page" and then click "Ok".
    4. Click on the dotted line representing the position of the header is and drag it down slightly.
    5. Go to Insert > Cell, insert a cell in the header of the report, and enter text in the cell.
    6. Right-click on the cell and go to Format Cell > "Appearance" tab and check the option "Hide Cell".
    7. Drag the header back into its original position.
    Regards,
    Ekta Srivastava
    8. Save the report and export it to the repository. The image will now be displayed on every page when the report is opened in PDF viewing mode.

  • Indesign ME CS6: Punctuation marks change direction when exporting to PDF

When exporting to PDF (for press) -  some punctuation marks (! & ") beahve as if they're "left -> right" (in the PDF only!) instead of "right->left" - as they appear in the open file.

If I understand this correctly, then before you opened a PC-sourced INDD, this never happened? And now it happens with all new files? Was that PC-sourced InDesign file from an English non-ME install of ID?
If doing so is not a big deal for you, I would almost want to suggest the "Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure" approach coined by Sigourney Weaver's character in Aliens. I.e. something happened to your ME install by simply opening up a non-ME file, and clearing prefs didn't fix it, so I'd be ready to uninstall, run the Adobe Clean tool, and reinstall.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
I hope that I'm wrong, and that there is some kind of preference that can be tweaked to get this to work correctly. I'd start by removing Font Explorer X entirely. It's also worth trying to make a new user in OS X and seeing if a fresh user experiences the same issue.

  • Dynamic gallery won`t display once uploaded on FTP

Hi, I builded this dynamic gallery page that display the
pictures using an UI Loader component.
When I test the movie in Flash the gallery loads and displays
the external picture with no problems. However, once the html and
SWF file are upoladed on line you can see everything correctly but
the clickable thumbnails won`t open any picture.
In the FTP I`m keeping the same exact path as my directory.
    The code says
    btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, ldr1)
    function ldr1 (e:Event) {
    my_ldr.source = "PICTURES/FASHION/fashion1.jpg";
So, I have a PICTURES folder in the same directory as the SWF
and HTML document and inside of it I have the FASHION folder
containing the pictures called "fashion1", "fashion2", and so
    forth...
I can send more code if necessary. It seems a pretty
straightforward process and it should work, but I can gigure out
    why is not working.
    Anybody have any idea why?
Here` s the website in progress
    http://www.erinbarry.co.uk/staging/home.html

I see in the directory tree of your web host that all of your
jpg's have all caps for their extensions (fashion1.JPG not
fashion1.jpg). If you change the path in the Flash or change the
filenames this will work. Often, your local computer OS doesn't
care about caps vs no-caps, whereas web servers often do care, and
in this instance your web server does.
To test this, if you put "
    http://www.erinbarry.co.uk/staging/PICTURES/FASHION/fashion1.jpg"
into the browser path you get a "404 Not Found" error. If you
    change it to "
    http://www.erinbarry.co.uk/staging/PICTURES/FASHION/fashion1.JPG"
    you get the image.

  • Email content won't display in Mail Yosemite

    Hi there,
I upgraded to Yosemite last week and until yesterday everything seemed to work fine. As of yesterday, my email contents stopped displaying in the content window. The only thing that changed before it started was that I used an external display. My mac is a MBP 13" mid 2012, 2.9 Ghz i7.
    see screen capture attached.
    I appreciate your help,
    Ben.

    Thanks for your quick answer,
And sorry, I should have said that before:
It started on the external display and actually the very first time I could still see the message content, it went blank only when I clicked on the "see more from..." hyperlink to unravel the message's full content. Then it started happening to the message as a whole and just by selecting a message to view it. Also, it happens on both the external and laptop displays, on the laptop display both when external display is connected or not, after successive restarts and shutdowns.
I hope this gives you a better idea, but do get back to me if you need more inf.
    Thanks again,
    Ben.
