Hyperlinks in footnote

Hello everybody,
after using PDFG and implementing it for customers for quite some time, I have just noticed that PDFG doesn't seem to be able to convert hyperlinks in a Word document when those links are placed in a footnote.
If I try to do the same thing manually using the Word/Acrobat pair on the PDFG server, everything works as expected. Is this a known issue or a limitation of the product? If not, is there any setting that I'm not aware of?
Any hint would be greatly appreciated!
Steffen.

Sorry to come back to this but I have a related question if that's ok.
When I export to pdf from indesign, I made sure that the include bookmarks and hyperlinks was checked. When the pdf was created, I was able to click on any of the TOC entries to be taken to the correct page. However I thought that all the entries would be included in the bookmarks tab but there's nothing there when I view the pdf.
I wondered if you could tell me how to get the bookmarks to appear?

  • Importing IDTT, hyperlinks in footnotes move around

    Hi,
    I've found a bizarre situation when placing IDTT, and I'm wondering if anyone has encountered this or can shed any light. I assume it's a bug, but I'm not sure if there's much use in reporting an IDTT bug at this point.
    My IDTT has embedded footnotes that include hyperlinks. Here's an example:
    <ASCII-MAC>
    <DefineCharStyle:i=>
    <DefineCharStyle:hl=>
    <DefineParaStyle:chapnum=>
    <DefineParaStyle:foot=>
    <DefineParaStyle:para=>
    <ParaStyle:chapnum>Chapter 1
    <ParaStyle:para>Here is some paragraph text preceding a footnote.<cPosition:Superscript><FootnoteStart:><ParaStyle:foot> <CharStyle:i>See<CharStyle:> some text.<FootnoteEnd:><cPosition:> Here is a bit more text.<cPosition:Superscript><FootnoteStart:><ParaStyle:foot> Here is a hyperlink within a footnote. It should be around the following text: <Hyperlink:=<HyperlinkName:HL1><HyperlinkDest:http://fakeurl.com><CharStyleRef:hl><HyperlinkLength:21><Hidden:0><BrdrVisible:0>>text of the hyperlink<HyperlinkDestDefn:=<HyperlinkDestName:http://fakeurl.com><HyperlinkDestUrl:http://fakeurl.com>>. And here is a bit more text.<FootnoteEnd:><cPosition:> And here's some text to fill out this paragraph.
    <ParaStyle:para>Here is a second paragraph that also has some text.<cPosition:Superscript><FootnoteStart:><ParaStyle:foot> Here is another hyperlink within a footnote. It should be around the following text: <Hyperlink:=<HyperlinkName:HL2><HyperlinkDest:http://ersatzurl.com><CharStyleRef:hl><HyperlinkLength:33><Hidden:0><BrdrVisible:0>>this is the text of the hyperlink<HyperlinkDestDefn:=<HyperlinkDestName:http://ersatzurl.com><HyperlinkDestUrl:http://ersatzurl.com>>. And here is a bit more text.<FootnoteEnd:><cPosition:> And here's some text to fill out this paragraph.
    <ParaStyle:para>Finally, an exception. The upcoming footnote is the last thing in the document and therefore the hyperlinks are situated correctly.<cPosition:Superscript><FootnoteStart:><ParaStyle:foot> Here is the last hyperlink within a footnote. It should be around the following text: <Hyperlink:=<HyperlinkName:HL3><HyperlinkDest:http://pseudourl.com><CharStyleRef:hl><HyperlinkLength:16><Hidden:0><BrdrVisible:0>>last bit of text<HyperlinkDestDefn:=<HyperlinkDestName:http://pseudourl.com><HyperlinkDestUrl:http://pseudourl.com>>. And here is a bit more text.<FootnoteEnd:><cPosition:>
    Each hyperlink source should be the text following the colon. Instead, when I place this into a new document, I get results that appear random (although I assume they aren't). The first link's source is the text "nd here’s some text t" in the second paragraph. The second link's source is the text " It should be around the followin" in the second footnote. Interestingly, the last hyperlink is correctly placed. This only works if that footnote is the very last thing in the IDTT file, followed by a return (without the return the source is offset by one character, meaning it does not include the first character of its intended source text and runs one character long). Given that last point, I'm sure there's some sort of offset pattern but it seems like it would be extremely difficult to ascertain within the IDTT. (I've tried counting characters and occasionally the results seem meaningful; other times there's no obvious pattern).
    I'm halfway resigned to having to relink all of my hyperlinks, but I thought I'd try reaching out first. Has anyone encountered or heard of this, and is there a fix?

    You would be best off replacing pdf pages in your existing linked pdf.
    Edit your original Illustrator file and creating a pdf of that. Replace (don't delete!) pages in your existing linked pdf with your updated pdf. The links will remain and you'll have the updated image you need. It is also a better work flow to maintain your Illustrator file.

  • Footnotes as hyperlinks in pdf

    Hello,
    I'm using Framemaker 11. I made a dokument with footnotes and cross refenrences on those footnotes. After exporting the document to pdf the cross references became hyperlinks of thoses fotenotes (i.e. while clicking on those refenrence numbers it jumps to the corresponding footnote entry) but not the original footnotes themselves. What do I have to do, that after clicking on the actual fotenote number the pdf jumps to the fotenote entry at the bottom?

    To what exactly is the footnote cross-ref entry pointing to? You should be targeting the actual footnote at the bottom of the page with the x-refs, not the original footnote insertion on the page.

  • Footnote reference hyperlinks in exported pdf

    Hi everyone,
    I have a large document with an automatic table of contents. When I created the TOC, there was an option in the table of contents styles dialogue box to check a setting called "create pdf bookmarks". I checked this and then when I exported to pdf, I made sure that the include bookmarks and hyperlinks were checked also. When the pdf was created, I was able to click on any of the TOC entries to be taken to the correct page.
    The document also has footnote reference numbers within the body text that relate to footnotes at the bottom of the page. Similar to the way the table of contents created automatic bookmarks, I wondered if there is a way to automatically create hyperlinks from the footnote reference number to the footnote at the end of the page? If yes, is there an automatic way to achieve this?
    Appreciate any assistance.

    Sorry to come back to this but I have a related question if that's ok.

  • Using footnotes as a hyperlink to supporting pdf documents

    How do I create footnotes that are hyperlinked to source pdf files in combined binder?  I recently completed a 50 page report with 65 footnotes for a consulting firm.  The consulting firm took my pdf report and used the footnotes as a hyperlink to the source backup documents.  they then used the source documents with my report and combined all the files - some 2,000 pages - into one binder.  So now I want to know how to create a reeport using the footnotes as a hyperlink to the source document.
    I am using a very current iMac running OS X, and using in Adobe X Pro.

    The labels idea seems like the simplest to me. I know there's a way to do hyperlinks in an HTMLEditorPane (don't know if this is exactly the right classname) but it isn't simple, and I have no experience with it myself. I really like your idea of displaying the licence agreement in Notepad though, it gives the licencee a chance to modify it before agreeing to it. Other licences I have agreed to are so rigid, they don't let you change anything.

  • Hyperlinks are dead when Pages file is exported as a PDF

    When I export a file from Pages '09, version 4.0.5, to a PDF file, the hyperlinks do not work. The Pages help menu states "Hyperlinks in your Pages document are exported to the PDF file. Hyperlinks are also created in the PDF file for table of contents entries, footnotes and endnotes, webpages, email addresses, and bookmarks." I am opening the PDF files in Acrobat Reader. What is the problem here?

    For sure, putting background objects *_at front_* is not a good idea

  • Hyperlinks in Word 2007 not appearing in PDF file

    I am not sure if this is more of a Word problem, or an Acrobat problem.
    However, I have a document in Word that contains a table of contents and several cross-references that are hyperlinks to locations in the document. In the Word file, you can CTRL + click and you will be taken to the destination of the hyperlink, for example to a topic in the Table of Contents.
    I used to make these a couple years back and they worked fine.
    I am using Word 2007 on a PC with Acrobat 8.1.2. I have tried both the Standard and the Rich Content PDF job options and neither of them seems to give me hyperlinks in the finished PDF file. Am I missing something?

    I've also had problems carrying links over from a Word file (I'm using Word 2002). External links in footnotes are not carried into the PDF file unless, using Change Conversion Settings - Settings, the 'Enable Accessibility etc.' box is ticked. Even then, in a 2mb file, with a lot of footnotes, whether the links are carried into the PDF file seems to depend on which computer I use. OK with XP and 1.5gb; but with Vista and 3gb the links do not appear in the PDF file. In either case its a 10+ minutes process.
    If you don't tick the box, links in footnotes are carried over only if the actual URL appears in the text. However, the process is much quicker.

  • Hyperlink + ctrl click opens the page in new tab in my website. it should open it in the same window of my website

    When i do a ctrl+hyperlink click in my website running in firefox, it opens up in a new tab, I dont want the ctrl+hyperlink click to open in new tab or new window. It should open in the same browser. (works as required in IE 7)
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

    Ctrl+left click on a link or bookmark will open in a new tab. That is a standard Firefox keyboard shortcut. Middle-click will do the same (Middle-click = press the scroll wheel). On the following page, scroll down to "Web Navigation" or Find (Ctrl+F), enter "Ctrl+lef" (without quotation marks) in the Find box. Read the footnote 4 about how to change from background tab to foreground tab.
    See: http://www.7is7.com/software/firefox/shortcuts.html
    To open a link or bookmark in the currently active tab, simply click on the link or bookmark. Your current tab will be over-written with the new link or bookmark.
    The following page shows the shortcuts for IE7. Click "Working with tabs". It shows Ctrl+click will "Open links in a new tab in the background" and on the next line, it shows CTRL+SHIFT+click will "Open links in a new tab in the foreground".

  • Is Framemaker a better option than InDesign for footnote-intensive reports?

    We currently used InDesign to layout our reports and briefings, and are exploring it's XML capabilities with a view to output in multiple formats: high-res PDFs, web pages within our CMS, and e-Pubs. We are unable to tag our hyperlinked footnotes for XML output in InDesign, and wondered if Framemaker would be a better tool. Our layouts are in colour, in a 2-column format, contain charts and tables and occasional exhibits, and we adhere to a strict template with both paragraph and character styles.
    Any direction or insights would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Andrea

    Andrea,
    Your sample does not look like being »foot-intensive«, I only find two footnotes. And those will not be a problem for FrameMaker.
    For 2-column text layout FrameMaker (as InDesign) gives you the option to create one text frame set to have two columns, or create two connected text frames, each of them one column. To keep the footnote in the original column, you would use the latter method. More information can be found in the online help:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS6C3D24E6-2965-48bb-B6CF-50D1439AEB01.html
    Regarding other elements of the sample pages I don’t see any stumbling blocks. Just be aware that the general approach to layout, and especially when using XML-structured documents, is completely different from InDesign. With InDesign you just move all the frames wherever and whenever you want. With FrameMaker you plan ahead, create master pages and paragraph styles and then follow this original design. Creating layout changes »on the fly« is just not the way you work in FrameMaker. But this limitation is the reason for a higher layout consistency.

  • Placing Hyperlinks via IDML

    I've managed to put together a few XSL stylesheets and scripts (perl, awk, bash) to transform my own 'markup' into IDML. (I found this to be the most convenient and reliable method to automate placing footnotes.)
    To do that, I've consulted the IDML specifications from Adobe, as well as the official 'cookbook'; and I've tested my XMLs with Adobe's own schemas inside the SDK (via EMacs's nXML mode); and everything is working fine with the documents thus produced—with a single exception: the hyperlinks (to refer to text anchors within the same document).
    When I'm referencing 'static' bits of text inside the same document, I prefer Hyperlinking over Cross-Referencing, in that the former allows me to use any text for my links. On the hyperlinks panel, and in the story editor, I do see my IDML-placed hyperlinks; but when exported to pdf or html, they don't work. More precisely, one or two of them work as expected, and the rest is all broken; although there's absolutely no visible difference between the 'source code' for the two kinds.
    I prepared several 'templates', in order to see how hyperlinks look when defined inside InDesign, and then exported into IDML. Having examined those, I still can't see what I'm doing wrong.
    Acrobat recognizes all of my 'HyperlinkTextDestination's, but not the links themselves; and exporting to IDML/Re-Importing to .indd doesn't help either.
    This is hugely frustrating. Now—I'd be really grateful if someone could tell me what's wrong with my link sources and destinations, and so forth, that they refuse to work. I hope it's just that I'm making a careless mistake with the XML attributes and such (I'm a novice in all these matters):
    This is how an 'HyperlinkTextSource' looks, inside my main story xml:
    <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]">
    <HyperlinkTextSource Self="#THE UNIQUE ID OF THE DESTINATION, ASSIGNED BY ME#" Name="#UNIQUELY GENERATED (RANDOM) NAME#" Hidden="false" AppliedCharacterStyle="n">
    <Content>#THE BIT OF TEXT THAT WILL SERVE AS THE LINK#</Content>
    </HyperlinkTextSource>
    </CharacterStyleRange>
    My 'HyperlinkTextDestination's look like this, inside the main story xml:
    <HyperlinkTextDestination Self="HyperlinkTextDestination/#THE UNIQUE ID OF THE DESTINATION, ASSIGNED BY ME#" Name="#UNIQUE (RANDOM) NAME#" Hidden="false"/>
    And this, the Hyperlink specification inside designmap.xml:
    <Hyperlink Self="#UNIQUE (RANDOM) NAME#" Name="#UNIQUE ID OF THE DESTINATION, ASSIGNED BY ME#" Source="#UNIQUE ID OF THE DESTINATION, ASSIGNED BY ME#" Visible="false" Highlight="None" Width="Thin" BorderStyle="Solid" Hidden="false">
    <Properties>
    <BorderColor type="enumeration">Black</BorderColor>
    <Destination type="object">HyperlinkTextDestination/#UNIQUE ID OF THE DESTINATION, ASSIGNED BY ME#</Destination>
    </Properties>
    </Hyperlink>
    This is the bit of XSLT that produces the 'source':
    <xsl:template match="#MY CHOSEN ELEMENT NAME FOR LINKS#">
    <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]">
    <HyperlinkTextSource Self="{@linkend#THE UNIQUE ID OF THE DESTINATION#}" Name="{@linkend}_{generate-id(.)}" Hidden="false" AppliedCharacterStyle="n">
           <Content><xsl:value-of select="."/></Content>
    </HyperlinkTextSource>
    </CharacterStyleRange>
    </xsl:template>
    The destination producer:
    <HyperlinkTextDestination Self="HyperlinkTextDestination/{@id#THE UNIQUE ID, ASSIGNED BY ME#}" Name="{@id#...SAME AS BEFORE#}" Hidden="false"/>
    And, this is responsible for the Hyperlink elements inside designmap.xml:
    <Hyperlink Self="{@linkend}DEST{generate-id(.)}" Name="{.}" Source="{@linkend}" Visible="false" Highlight="None" Width="Thin" BorderStyle="Solid" Hidden="false">
    <Properties>
    <BorderColor type="enumeration">Black</BorderColor>
    <Destination type="object">HyperlinkTextDestination/<xsl:value-of select="@linkend"/></Destination>
    </Properties>
    </Hyperlink>
    ps. I don't transform into InDesign-XMLElements; all of this becomes regular text. I don't think it's worth the hassle: Id's XML-handling capabilities are too rudimentary.

    I was able to solve this, finally. I'm posting the solution here, so that others with similar questions might benefit:
    Well, my mistake was this: I transgressed the #1 rule of IDML—if an element has a 'Self' attribute, it has to be unique inside the entire package. I had given the same 'self' attribute, to all links pointing to the same destination. Once I fixed this, the hyperlinks started working. (I should have read the specifications more carefully...)

  • Hyperlinks in iBooks Author preview

    I have created a hyperlink in iBooks Author (1.0.1) and it shows up and works perfectly when I click on it - i.e. Safari launches and displays the expected page on my iMac. When I send (Preview) the book in question to my iPad 2 (running iOS 5.0.1) however, the link doesn't work at all.  Is this because I am only looking at a preview of my book on the iPad and it will work when I publish it or am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

    Great work, Timmy.
    Having solved that one, we now need to crack on with the following wish list:
    - creating a touch screen accessible footnotes function
    - a show/hide option for answers to review questions
    - providing a starter set of notes at the editorial stage
    - additional text editing functions not currently in pages
    - touch-activated pop-ups on screen
    - text resizing by gestures, like the Macbook trackpad
    And the real biggie .. How institutions like our uni can serve course material on this platform (free at the point of use) but with access restricted to those enrolled in courses. Does anyone know if Apple has an institutional support business option.
    It strikes me that the early adopters need to be vocal about how powerful this could be as an educational delivery tool as soon as IBA's teething problems have been sorted. Let's add to the wish list and build the teaching platform of the future.
    Cheers,
    MicroGnome.

  • How do you make footnotes in ibooks author

    I have not been able to make footnotes nor does iBook import the footnote format from Word. This is frustrating since the software (iBooks) is intended for the creation of textbooks which contain many footnotes.

    IBA doesn't support footnotes. The next-best thing would be to use numerical superscript references that you make hyperlinks to the notes. You should be able to select superscript as a character style in the font palette. Alternatively, use "[1]" as the footnote style and make the entire thing a hyperlink (including the angle brackets). This creates a larger target for tapping.
    Be aware that, even if you do this, it will still be clumsy for the reader because iBooks does not have a "back" button. Once the reader follows a hyperlink, there is no way to easily get back to where the reader came from. For this reason, it's probably best to avoid internal hyperlinks and only use external ones (to web pages), because these links open in Safari, so the reader does not lose context.

  • Change Formatting of Footnote Indicator when Exporting EPUB, how? CS6

    Hi,
    Well, it's all quite impressive so far. CS6 ePub capabilities are miles
    ahead of CS4, my last version, that's for sure.
    One thing I'm stuck on, though, is how to change the formatting of
    footnote indicators when exporting an ePub from InDesign.
    No matter what I do, when the ePub is viewed in ADE, the footnote
    indicator in the text comes out in blue, raised, and underlined. Also,
    it screws up the leading of the paragraph line it's on -- because the
    digit is raised, there line spacing above that line becomes bigger.
    I've tried applying a charater style in InDesign to footnote indicators,
    and I've played around with the settings in Document Footnote Option,
    but no joy so far. It's always raised, blue, and underlined.
    Anyone know how contorl the footnote indicator formatting in an exported
    ePub without opening up the ePub in an external editor?
    Thanks,
    Ariel

    Sigil is good to start with. As you grow more confident in editing e-pubs, you might want to ditch it though (it has its own personal set of annoying features).
    Superscripts are prone to mess up paragraph spacing in HTML, and with everything said and done, that's just what an e-pub is. Nothing you can do inside InDesign, it takes raw CSS editing to "fix" it (meaning, to make it less conspicuous than the downright stupid default handling!).
    But the blue-and-underlining bit is nothing you can fix -- for a real web page you can, but iBooks, for instance, INSISTS on having hyperlinks formatted that way, whether you like it or not.

  • Can one include footnotes in a blog?

    I used to include footnotes in my blog but Word has now stopped doing blogs and I cannot find an easy way to continue using the footnotes simply using dreamweaver cs6 which I have done for 2 years. Is it possible? David B

    Footnotes are commonly used in printed technical articles. On web pages however, they are best replaced by normal hyperlinks within the actual article.   As an example, compare this to definition of ‘footnote’ in WWWebster. No special technique is required here because hyperlinks are styled differently from normal text.  This makes screen reading much easier.
