I am a forensic examiner with an iPod 5G in Recovery Mode. As a 'non Apple' person, what does 'restore' imply with reference to the 5G? Does it affect any data on teh iPod, like pics, and videos?
As stated in the title, I am a forensic examiner, although most of my work is on Windows devices. My problem is an iPod 5G with Touch Wheel that I received to exam, and I have not been able to get anything from conventional methods. But not really understanding enough about the Apple architecture and iPods, when I plug it into a computer, it appears to be in Recovery Mode, and calls for a Restore. The questions I have are:
1) How does the iPod get into Recovery mode
2) How to get it out of Recovery mode
3) But more importantly, what does Restore do to the device? If there happen to be items of interest (pics, videos, etc), does the restore affect them?

- Many internal errors in the iPod resul in the iPod going automaticlly (default) into recovery mode.
- Usual method is to restore the iPod via iTunes to get the iPod our of recovery mode.

Sometime RecBoot will do it if the iPod was intentionally placed in recovery mode
- Unless RecBoot or similar will get the iPod put of recovery mode the iPod will be erased. Restoring the iPod erases the iPod.

Any one else unable to backup pics and videos to the cloud?
I noticed today when I went to backup - I go for a while in between backups - that it acted like it was backing up but only did the contacts. Then I noticed that my pictures and Videos hadn't updated since July...

Let's see what's causing the problem! Which device do you have? Do you experience the issue while connected via wi-fi or the VZW network? Do you receive an error message?

I had forgotten my password for my ipod touch and followed the steps to put it in to recovery mode now it will not allow me to take it out of recovery mode

Very disappointed in my LG G2. My screen freezes all the time especially when texting. This started after the update. My husband's phone is doing the same thing. We have done a hard reset, deleted pics and videos to clean up the phone but nothing helps. Any suggestions? Our phones are new.
Lots of Frustration. In some cases the LGG2 is rendered useless even as a phone.
Here is what I did.
Got replacement Phone.
Same problems but I shut down all apps that I purchased even though they worked before KitKat.
Found that If I have both WiFi and LTE Data on at the same time battery chewing stops. Do Not know why.
Then I got 2 CM free utilities. The Clean and Wash utilities. Run them and find the culprits grinding CPU
cycles and running down the battery. Number One is the Verizon Voice Mail service constantly turning on and off
and retrieving data not there. Turn of the extra Voice mail and use the old access with the *6. Unless you have
100 messages a day for business your hosed until this KitKat issue is fixed. Get the CM battery utility.
YOU can see the battery suckers and shut them down when not using automatically.
Start putting back one application at a time you used often and see it they work and if the utilities will tune them
down if they cause problems. The LG will get better but with some limitations.
LG and Verizon have a problem with what was a great phone.turned bad overnight.

All you can do is restore from backup if yu have one. If you backed up to iTunes make sure that autosyncing is turned off. Otherwise when you connect the iPod to the computer the backup with you data might be overwritten. To turn off go to iTunes>Preferences>Devicesand check the box that says "Prevent iPods...".

Try putting it in DFU mode and then restore.

my ipod was in recovery mode and fixed it. i can use it. but the problem is whenever am i connect it with itunes it says IPOD is in recovery mode even after recover is done. i cant sync ipod rite now. it showing same msg again. nyone knows wat to do plz??
I did the restore and it cleared and reset the iPod but after it finished the same error came up. I tried this 3 times. Also it no longer shows up as a drine in My Computer.
if it's relentlessly doing that to you, it's plausible that the message is being caused by a Windows drive letter confusion. (that's consistent with the disappearance for My Computer, too.)

my daughters ipod 4th gen will no longer charge past 20% and will not connect to a pc in order to back everything up. the cable is working fine, otherwise it would not even charge to the 20%. i have tried the reset to not lose any data and no luck, home+power for 10-15 seconds. I really would like to not lose everything she has, again, because I can't back it up this time. I have tried charging via a wall outlet and PC and both charge fine, just only to 20%. Because once it has charged enough to be powered on as soon as you turn it on it says battery is at 20% and will not charge anymore after that, it just runs for about 5-10 minutes before the battery dies again. The battery cycles discharge/recharge daily and its not on the charger at full charge for more than a couple hours and is never totally dead for more than a couple of hours.

Try resetting the iPod.
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Next would be to sync with yur computer
After that would be to restore from backup
Last would be to restore to factory defaults/new iPod. -
i have a bunch of pics and videos that i have taken with my digital camera that i am trying to transfer from my pc to my macbook... i have saved them all to a usb stick however when i open them on my macbook they appear in "preview" and so when i close the program they all disappear... where can i put them so that they dont disappear and also so that i can upload them to my ipod??? also, my videos open quicktime but again as soon as i close them they disappear... where can i put them so they stayed saved??

They need to be placed in the iTunes or iPhoto libraries respectively to become available for transfer to the iPod. In either case, this can be done by dragging them into the open window of the respective application.

I forgot my password and am trying to reset my ipod, but it won't work.It says that my ipod is in recovery mode and that I must restore it. I click ok, and then click on restore and update. Then it says connecting ipod software update server and a screen pops up with ipod software update on the top and iOS 5.1. It lists a bunch of stuff this update contains and on the bottom it says next, which I click and nothing happens, it just goes back to the ipod restore page. Help, what am I doing wrong?

Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.

How can I transfer video taken with my iPhone to my iPad WITHOUT using a computer or iTunes? I'm going to Europe for a month and want to use my iPhone to take pics and video, then come back to the hotel room and use my iPad to edit/store each evening. I don't want to use my iPad to take the video...too large/bulky. And I WON'T have a computer with me...I purchased the iPad to take with me so I could use the RDC to my home computer and avoid taking my computer at all. Is this possible?
here is a cheaper solution than camera kit and a lot easier if you have WIFI available.
I use the PhotoSync APP (I think its a $1.99) will transfer videos and photos over WIFI to any other IOS device or even PC/MAC. Great app since I like doing video and photos on my IPHONE and transfer to IPAD2 without synching through computer or doing cloud based storage.
You can even send photos/videos from your MAC/PC to your IOS devices that way too. Makes it so much easier.
