What you would need to do is make a movie clip, with a button inside it.
On the mouseOver, the MC, will go and stop at a keyframe, which displays the equipment data.
No idea about integrating data from an excel sheet....guess you'll have to type it there.
Hope that helps

    plZ help

    Hi there,
    New user to discussion forums.
    Are you able to help?
I have checked out the iTunes.exe in Task Manager, and yes it disappears from the Processes view in Task Manger when I close the frozen application (by 'right clicking and closing' on the minimized iTunes tab at the bottom of my screen). I do not appear to have QuickTime installed now, also.
Also when open iTunes I get a 'Warning! The registry settings used by iTunes drivers for improting and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other cds burning software. Please re-install iTunes' message, which needs to be 'OK'd'. After a slight pause iTunes opens but immediately freezes. JAY
I am having a similar problem. A few days back I was asked to upgrade my version of iTunes. Since then it won't open correctly, and when it finally decides to open it freezes on my PC. I am then unable to close the application using the close option on iTunes. I need to close it via my Task Manager. I noticed the iTunes download includes a QuickTime download at the same time. I cannot open QuickTime due to a 'Buffer overun'. I am so confused and have no idea what to do. I have lost count of the amount of times I have uninstall iTunes and then re-install it. I have noticed I do not seem to be able to uninstall QuickTime using the uninstall option. CAN ANYBODY ADVISE PLEASE? I have a PC and use Windows XP Home Edition.

  • No 5.1 sound at all, beging for help plea

Ok, I got Audigy 2 ZS.
I got some new speakers - Logitech X530 5. speakers.
    I run the speakers test.
    This is what I get.
    left channel
    centre channel
    right channel
    rear left
    rear right
    subby
Ok, all is good and all speakers work.
    Now I run a DVD.
I get a stereo signal from every speaker. Simple terms I get the same sound from EVERY speaker and of cause this is crap.
Now The CMSS thingy is for stereo sound only, this way you get all sounds from all speakers, so this CMSS is not the issue as its off and has to be off, its usless to me and serves no point to true 5..
Now, Do i need a new sound card that is not made by Creative or is there a sercret setting I need to employ to get proper 5. sound.
I have 5. enable in windows speaker settings.
I have 5. enable in Creative settings.
The speakers and CAL test all pass and work perfectly.

Ok, for week everyone can call me a numb nut
I was using power DVD, after looking at the settings for sound I could only choose 2 channel. hence crap sound in DVDs., Im not paying for a licence to get 5. sound, do they think I'm stupid ( hush )I got Win DVD and it works fine plus WMP works great also.
Thanks for your advice, as soon as you guys said what DVD player in have, it hit me like a ton of bricks. DOH,DOH.

  • Create Support Message via Help - Limitation for certain people

    Hi,
i try to configure my SolMan, so that only a couple of person can create a support message with Help -> Create Support Message.
I look for a role, but can't find anything to solve this issue. Does anyone now what I have to customize, that only people I allow can create a support message in that way?
    Thanks in advance
    Michael

Thanks for your replies, but this doesn't solve my problem
    1) When I don't create a business partner for those people, they can create messages, but then then the filed "message processor" would be empty in SolMan
    2) which role do you mean? I tested with a test-user without any role - he can create support messages as well...
    regards
    Michael

  • Deception, no or few replies to people asking for help

I'm so sad about this new forum. There are many questions asked and few replies or replies that don't go deep.
I remember that in the old forum there were very interesting discussions, very deep (technically speaking), I always found a solution or at least I found out that I wasn't the only one to have that bug/problem.
I could read some of the discussions, even if I didn't have that particular problem, only because they could teach me something.
Now it is difficult to follow what the people ask and what others reply. It's a sort of chat with 20 people who ask for help during the same minute.... how to follow that How to help?

    Patrizia Franchini wrote:
And remember also that in Europe Apple and the Mac are not so important (or weren't before the iDevices). In the shops you couldn't find ONE webcam compatible with your Mac, ONE software for the Mac, ONE book, .. It was necessary to order the items on the Internet. No version of the State tax program for the Mac,... It is/was a fight, a challenge.
It was the same way in the US before the Apple Stores. There is nothing Apple can do about tax software. Contact the company that makes it and ask for a Mac version.
Here the price difference with the PC are enormous... in the United States the prices are more competitive.
Because the US doesn't have a VAT. I've been to Europe many times. Everything is more expensive there. I live in Canada now and it is much the same here. Currency exchange rates are meaningless. Everything is more expensive in Canada. If anything, Apple products are actually marked up less than other products.
And you also have some privileges: there are many promotions only available in the United States. You lose all your purchased music? In the United States there is a way to have it back with a click, but not in Europe. In your iTunes store there are many free songs and video,.... In Europe it's only a year or two that there is ONE free song each week.
I sincerely doubt Apple is responsible for that. Europe is a huge, wealthy market. Apple would love to offer Europeans the same deals that they do in the US. It has taken years for Apple to make agreements with all of the various rights holders to make iTunes the market that it is. Compare iTunes to the iBookstore. These things just take time. The European companies just don't want to make any deals.
Well, just to explain why Apple has/had a little part of the market here, and why it is/was difficult to find Apple products and help for Apple products.
Keep in mind that Apple's newfound success is due to its intense focus on devices for consumers. The PC industry is still 85% PC. Just try to use a Mac at work. I dare you. Given the entreprenurial nature of the US vs the heavily industrial nature of Europe, I can see why it would be worse there.
I forgot to say that to obtain help from Apple is very difficult where I live. No phone service from Apple, no chat with the customer care, no Genius bar (or very far away, 300 km), no companies that can help you if you lose your data from the hard disk. The Apple Store is in German and French and customer service people only speak French and German, and not Italian. If you want to speak Italian, you must contact the Italian Apple Store, but they can't help you with a problem in the Swiss Apple Store.
You have to find yourself the solution.
It is the same everywhere. Apple Stores are only in major markets. Many people in the US or Canada still have to drive 300 km to find one. I can't help much with the language. There are something like 500,000 Italian speakers in Switzerland. How many of them own Macs? If Apple hired some Italian speaking customer care representatives would they then have to increase the price for Apple products for everyone in Switzerland?

  • Trying to get a computer repaired, getting the run around - a plea for help

    First, some backstory:
I ordered a refurbished ThinkPad T440s from the Outlet on July 21 after two weeks of fighting with the bots and snipers.  It was a nice machine: it had an i7 4600 processor and a FHD IPS display.  The outlet shipped my computer quickly and I was happy to receive it.  I opened it up and... it was the wrong computer altogether.
I contacted a CS representative and she told me that the only option was to send the unit back for a refund and try again.  Apparently there is no inventory system in place to tell me if the computer I originally ordered was even available, or if it had been sent to a different customer.  Begrudgingly, I sent the original laptop back and received my refund.
I decided to try again, and successfully managed to snag another machine with similar specs on July 29 after camping out on the Outlet site.  I was overjoyed, but this order has turned out to be a nightmare.
After the status of my order sat on "Released to Manufacturing" for two weeks, I contacted bgriffin2 on these same forums.  After giving him my order information, my laptop shipped on the same day, August 12.  I was delighted.
When the computer arrived, I opened it up and I was pleased to see that it was the correct machine.  However, the laptop had severe scratching all over the rear LCD cover, as if someone had taken their car keys and dug grooves in the lid.  The edges of the computer were severely worn, and on one corner it looked like the pc had experienced a pretty nasty fall.  To make a long story short, the laptop did not look reconditioned at all.  It also had not been function tested, as there were numerous problems with the machine besides the cosmetics.  The fingerprint reader did not work and was not even recognized by the BIOS, the speakers made loud popping noises intermittently, and the external battery was not even recognized by the machine.  I still do not know if this was a battery issue, or if there is something wrong with the motherboard of the machine.
I used to work at a facility that refurbished handsets for Verizon Wireless.  I will tell you up front that this sort of shoddy reworking and QC testing would never fly there.  This unit should have never left the facility as a scratch & dent, much less as a refurbished and remanufactured unit.
Do you think that's the end of my sob story?  Oh no, we're just getting started.  Bgriffin2 acknowledged that this was unacceptable and he suggested I send it in for warranty service to have these issues resolved.  I spoke to a very nice woman at the Atlanta service center and she was very helpful in getting me a prepaid carton to send the laptop to Memphis for repair.  I sent the laptop off and it was deliviered to Lenovo on the 19th of August.  Since then, the status of my repair on the EasyServ website has looked like this:
    http://i.imgur.com/t3Qs03e.png
Each and every time I see "Hold for customer information," I place a phone call to the tech support line and ask what they need from me.  The first two times I was redirected to the actual people doing the repair, as the representatives that answer the phone couldn't seem to discern what is going on with the repair.  Both times, I was told that they didn't need anything from me, that there was a glitch in the system and the hold was accidentally placed.  I was told that the hold was removed and that they would begin repairing my laptop immediately.  I was content with that answer until I received a phone call last Thursday from someone from billing.  This gentleman said that Lenovo wanted $300 to fix the scratched rear LCD cover as it was not covered by warranty.  I was stunned.  These people had my laptop for two weeks before tellling me that they wanted money from me.  I was appalled and told him that there was no way that I was going to pay for it.  I had to tell him twice that the unit was not a scratch and dent model, it was a refurbished model.  The scratching on the lid is not minor, and the machine does not work as it is supposed to.  He said that he would see if he could get the price reduced for me; I said absolutely not.  He said that he would see if they would fix it for free out of the goodness of their hearts, and I said fine, do what you can.  He promised to call me back and tell me about his findings; I have not heard from him again.
Upset by the previous phone call, I immediately called the tech support number again.  A representative named Arva tells me that she sees that I am to receive a new laptop.  Confused, I tell her that I had one sent in for repairs.  She puts me on hold for a little while and comes back saying that the computer was damaged beyond Lenovo's acceptable specifications and that they were going to send me a newly refurbished laptop with the same specifications, and that I should expect a phone call within the next 24-48 business hours.  Of course, that was on Thursday.  I did not receive a call on Friday, and it was Labor Day weekend, so no calls then.  I also did not receive a phone call yesterday, but I noticed a new "Hold for customer information" popped up.
I called again today to find out what they needed from me.  This time the tech support representative tells me that the battery won't hold a charge, and that's the reason for the hold.  Now tell me, why on earth would they not have another battery laying around to test with?  She tells me that there is no ETA, but I requested a phone call from someone who knows what's going on, and also an escalation of some type.  Notice that she did not mention a newly refurbished laptop as Arva had promised.  These people can't even keep their story straight.
I am crying out for help here.  I am a grad student in CS and I absolutely NEED a computer.  I have a desktop at school, but it is not portable and I need a laptop.  Please, can someone get something done about this?
     My case number is A07YFM9.

    Hi massmercury,
I want to apologize for your experience here with the service center. I am moving forward to have your case escalated for further review. Please see my private message.  I will be your point of contact until our Customer Advocate team reaches out to you.

  • I am writing to this forum to ask for help in determining whether Aperture will satisfy my needs when I switch from Windows to MAC in the near future.

I am writing to this forum to ask for help in determining whether Aperture will satisfy my needs when I switch from Windows to MAC in the near future.
I am currently using Photoshop Elements 8 on Windows 7.  After several years of use, I am self taught and adequately proficient for an amateur.  What I didn't realize (until I started researching my upcoming migration on the Internet) is that I actually use PE8 for two functions: digital asset management and digital editing.
Regarding Digital Asset Management: My research leads me to understand that PE on MAC does not provide the same level of organizational capability that I am used to having on Windows, instead providing Adobe's Bridge which does not look very robust.  Furthermore, iPhoto, which come on MAC will not support the hierarchical keyword tagging that I require to organize my library of photos. The two SW applications which I am thinking of switching to are either Aperture or Adobe's Lightroom.  Frankly, I'm thinking that it would be smoother to stay within the Apple product line.
So the remaining question is whether Aperture will support my digital editing needs. The tweaks that I do to my photos are not very complex (no, I do not want to put people's heads on other animal bodies).  But could someone who uses Aperture tell me whether It will allow me to do the following kinds of edits?:
    - If I have a photo where someone's face is too shadowed, can I lighten just that person's face, and leave the rest of the photo as-is?
    - if I have a photo where the background is cluttered (eg, 2 people in front of the Parthenon which is undergoing renovation), can I remove just the construction cranes?
    - Can it splice together several separate photos to give a panoramic?
If, once I get Aperture, I find that it cannot enable the kinds of editing that I do, I would probably get PE11 in the future. However, if people in this forum tell me that Aperture will definitely not  support the kinds of editing which I've described in the previous paragraph, I would prefer to get PE11 with my initial configuration (since someone will be helping me with my migration).
Thanks in advance for your consideration and help!

I am concerned, however,  about using a non-Apple Digital Asset Manager in OSX. I would really like to avoid integration problems. Is using PE11 to import and catalog my digital photos likely to cause conflicts?
Thanks for any insight on this
    Amy,
Not so much conflicts as maybe a little less seamless integration with Apple software and perhaps some third-party software providers in the Mac App Store where some programs build in direct access to iPhoto and Aperture libraries for getting images into those programs easily. Typically, there is a manual command to go to Finder (think Windows Explorer) to browse folders.
One caution to mention however, is that the organization you set-up in PE Organizer is unlikely to transfer over to either iPhoto or Aperture if you decide to change at some point.
The only real stumbling block that I see in your opening comment is that you want hierarchical keywording (Kirby or Léonie can go into the details on keywording limitations as I stay at one level). If you can work with the keywording schemes of either iPhoto or Aperture, then using PE for your external editor (either program supports setting an external editor) would probably be ideal since you know PE well. This is the idea with the Mac App Store version of PE (editor with no organizer).
Note - I use Photoshop CS6 (full version) with Aperture and it works really well. The only downside is that Aperture has to make either a TIFF or PSD file to send to an external editor so that the original file is protected by not sending it to the pixel editor. While TIFF or PSD files protect the integrity of the image information without degrading it, they are typically much larger file sizes on disk than either RAW or JPEG files. Therefore, your library size (iPhoto or Aperture) will balloon quite a bit if you send a lot of files to external editors.
One other possibility for an external editor would be a program called Pixelmator. It is pretty similar to early versions of Photoshop, but built for Mac. Other than the panoramics you want, it will do most pixel editing that PE can do. It is not an organizer, so it is built to go with either iPhoto or Aperture. It does have differences in how you complete certain procedures, so there is bit of a learning curve when you are used to doing it the Adobe way.

  • Got a problem? Here's how best to ask for help.

Working with video editing on an NLE (Non Linear Editor) program can tax the most robust computers. Depending on many factors, this can be a daunting task, at best. Many of the components of one’s computer can be stressed, more than with almost any other operation, that it will ever perform.
Getting help on the forum can seem almost as daunting, as the first thing that a poster is likely to encounter is a list of questions, before any answers. This is the natural flow, because people are trying to help remotely. They cannot come to your office and sit behind you to determine your computer system’s capabilities, and observe just what you are doing, when and how you are doing it. Do not be put off by these questions, as they are very necessary and will very likely give the respondents some clues on where to look for your problem.
Problems can normally be broken down into these categories:
    1.) System
2.) Assets (the Audio, Video and still images)
3.) Project (how it is setup and with which Preset)
4.) Workflow (what you are doing, and how you are doing it)
If you prepare a checklist, before you post your problem, it will save everyone a great deal of time, and will likely yield your answer much more quickly. The more detail that you furnish, the fewer questions will remain, that have to be asked. Remember, you have to be the "eyes" for the others on the forum, if they are expected to help you. They could be thousands of mile away, in other time zones, and will not know about your system, your Assets, your Project or your workflow, until you tell them. Help them get started quickly, by telling them in your first post. Do your "homework," so they do not have to ask questions for the first five responses, and can start giving you answers much more quickly.
Forum regular Bill Hunt offers these recommendations:
    System:
Be very specific about your computer. Just saying that "I have a Dell" doesn’t tell them much of anything. List your CPU type and speed, i.e. Core2 Quad Q6700 2.3GHz. Same for your RAM, i.e. 4GB of DDS. Also, list your Video Card, type, connection and driver number and date. Same for your Audio System. Note: most of this data can be found in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager. Pointing people to a URL on your computer company’s Web site isn’t a bad idea, but giving the exact details of your system is far, far better. It is likely that that Web site will have the general configuration, and who knows if that is exactly what you bought. List it for them, so they do not have to go and guess, and write down the specs. of your system.
One of the most important aspects of your system will be the I/O sub-system. What is that, you might ask? Well, it’s your HDD’s (Hard Disk Drives). The important info is how many physical HDD’s do you have. List their size, their speed, their connection, the amount of free, defragmented space and how they are allocated. This would look something like this: "3x 200GB SATA II. Drive C:\ OS, programs and Windows Virtual Memory with 185GB free, D:\ media with 120GB free, E:\ Project files, output and Scratch Disks with 150GB free." If you have any drive partitioned (not a good thing nowadays), let everyone know and give details. If you have a RAID, give full details on how it is managed, the type and how it is used in your system. [As an aside, most RAID’s should not really be considered for a system drive, unless one has built in redundancy in the RAID, i.e. 3, or more, physical disks. Remember, this info can be critical. If you have CD/DVD burners, list them and their connections. If you have external HDD’s, list them with the same details as for your internal HDD’s.
Next, tell about your Windows Virtual Memory (Page File). How large is it, where is it located on your system and how is it managed, i.e. dynamically by Windows, or static? Again, this can be critical. For info, you will need to go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance and look. In the Settings>Advanced, you should see things like Process Scheduling, Memory Usage and Virtual Memory. This is where you will find the answers. Note: depending on which OS one has, the exact location and syntax may differ.
While we’re on the OS, list the exact OS that you have, i.e. Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP-2 with all updates and hot-fixes.
What version of the NLE are you using and has it been updated, i.e. PE3.0.2.
Finally, list any other programs, that might be in use, while you are editing, such as MSN Messaging, etc. These can be critical, even though you are basically editing video.
    Assets:
Give full details on your Assets. Just saying "a bunch of .AVI’s" tells people nothing. Be very specific with the details. Same for your Audio and for your still images. Size in pixels, file type, etc., are very important for the stills, and file type. Sample-rate and sample size are important for the Audio.
    Project:
How is your Project setup? Which Preset did you use? What is the Duration of your Timeline. This gives someone the "lay of the land," so to speak and is very important. Note: your Project Preset should match your Video Assets. You can always Export/Share to some other frame size, or format, but your Project should match your Video Assets.
    Workflow:
How have you arranged your Assets on the Timeline allows someone to "see" your Project in their mind. Information such as one 00;10;00;00 AVI (remember, you will have furnished complete details on those AVI’s, or MPEG’s when you listed your Assets above) on Video Track 1 (VT1) with its Audio on Audio Track 1 (AT1). One AVI used as a PiP (Picture in Picture) on VT2 with its Audio on AT2. One MP3 soundtrack for the full Duration on Soundtrack and my Narration on the Narration Track. List any Transitions, or Effects used. If you have Titles, list them. If you have any Keyframing used, list where and what they control.
List exactly what you are doing and to which Asset you are doing it, when your problem occurs. If you are doing something like Export/Share, list the full settings (Presets) used, and be sure to mention any other tasks being performed by your computer, while you are doing the Export/Share.
If you have already done some trouble shooting, list what you have done and the complete results. Were there any error messages? If so, give the full description. To say, "I had error messages," tells people nothing. What exactly did they say?
This information will help people get right to your problem and will get you up and running much more quickly.
As an aside, think about the title of your post. Saying "Problem" is not good enough. Instead, something like "PE7 Fails on Share to MPEG-2" would be better. First, you are trying to let everyone know something about your Problem, so they will see it, and be interested in helping you. If you are having an Audio issue, mention "Audio" in the title, so the right people will find your post. Not everyone knows everything about all aspects of Video. You want the right people to see your post and to be working with you, to fix your problem. Also, later on, it is good to have a title that will be easily found by others, who may have the same exact problem. If you get an answer that works, please post back that success, so others, finding your post, will know what worked, and what did not. Note: do not put your entire post into the title. That is just tough to read and understand. Use a few words, but make them the right words.

Please note that this Tip was produced by Bill Hunt (the_wine_snob) and not me. I would never have the extent of knowledge needed to write this Tip.
    Cheers,

Thanks everybody who sent me ideas on how to play a .mov Quick Time Movie Codec HDV 720p50, 1280x720. It's for playing on TV, as well as Mac and PC. Someone suggested H264, but I thought this is for the Internet, not for HD quality 1280x720?
Could it be that the Mac and PC people who can't play it don't have a strong enough video card in their computer? I'm looking at various answers.
    I appreciate any help gratefully.
PS: I didn't see Helpful above the window, only Yes question answered and No.

if you can't play an HDV file on your computer, it most likely means you don't have the HDV codec on your computer.
It's a free download - google it and you can find it. You will have to drop the codec into your Quicktime library - it's all explained in the download. I've installed it for several people and it solves that problem right away.

  • BPM and ALEAUD Response - Looking forward for help

    Hi ,
I tried the using the concepts from the blog (/people/mitesh.parekh/blog/2008/12/01/receiving-aleaud-as-acknowledgment-in-ccbpm)where i have the Message ID which entered into BPM
but not the message Id which triggered the IDoc send . I think i m missing some small detail where i need to capture the send step MSG Id
i'm aware that its not possible to get the Msg id in BPM . How is that ABAP Mapping in the above blog captures the message id ?
    TRY.
    l_msgid_ref = param->get(
    IF_MAPPING_PARAM=>MESSAGE_ID ).
    catch CX_SY_REF_IS_INITIAL into oref.
    endtry.
Alternatively one more thread has some info
if someone can let me know where you can get this SourceDocNum would be great in this RFC Look up . in the thread Re: Idoc Acknowledgements and BPM.
    "<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?><ns0:RFC_READ_TABLE xmlns:ns0=\"urn:sap-com:document:sap:rfc:functions\"><DELIMITER/><NO_DATA/><QUERY_TABLE>IDXRCVPOR</QUERY_TABLE><ROWCOUNT/><ROWSKIPS/><DATA><item><WA/></item></DATA><FIELDS><item><FIELDNAME>SNDLAD</FIELDNAME><OFFSET/><LENGTH/><TYPE/><FIELDTEXT/></item></FIELDS><OPTIONS><item><TEXT>IDOCNUMBER EQ &apos;"
    + SourceDocNum
    + "&apos;</TEXT></item></OPTIONS></ns0:RFC_READ_TABLE>";
Since i do not have the Message ID it just creates the below payload from my mapping
This is the request being sent out using the ABAP Mapping as the Messgae ID is null .

  • Is there a way for two people to play music on Apple TV.  We both have itunes [she on windows, me on mac [mt lion].

Is there a way for two people to play music on Apple TV?  We both have itunes [she on windows, me on mac [mt lion].  We can turn on home sharing but we have separate email accounts.

    Use Boot Camp Assistant in
    Applications/Utility
    Remove the partition.
There is also a full pdf help guide built in Help menu there.
There are other methods also. Use OS X DVD and delete it but you can't do so while booted from your hard drive.
Memory = "RAM" that programs use and get loaded into to run
Your partition is part of hard drive physical storage where OS and applications are kept until needed.
And yes, Mac needs to have 20GB or 20% minimum to avoid problems and will run slower with such small amount of free space.
You could also do one of a number of ways to backup and then boot from another device and reformat and then restore your drive.
A "Mac Pro" is a workstation with multiple internal drive bays so really easy to backup, put Windows on its own hard drive; and no need to have someone else do anything - at all.

  • Is there any hope for Help Viewer?

I have read through as many discussions about Help Viewer problems as I can find, and still, help in Finder doesn't work. I have tried all of Dr. Smoke's suggestions and many others to no avail. Help Viewer still ends up going back to a blank screen, links that don't work, and the search just keeps searching.
All of the suggestions I have tried fix Help Viewer temporarily, but it has always gone back to its same old broken self.
If anyone out there can REALLY help, I would REALLY appreciate it.
    Thank you!

Hi Jordan. Hopefully I can offer a solution for this which bugged me enough to really try to resolve it, and have now done so, at least for me.
    First the essentials.
System Setup: Powermac G4 Dual 1GHz MDD. 1GB. MacOS 10.4.3
Issue: Loading Mac Helper from the Finder will result in a blank screen after the first launch. On first launch you will be able to click one or two links then it will not work and search will not function [issues may vary but blank screen always]
This problem occurred with earlier versions of Tiger. I have since done a clean install. Tried replacing the Help Viewer app from the Install disk and also the MacHelp.help document too, but it did not help. I even tried the same items from other disks just to check for corrupt files but still no change. Trashing the prefs does not seem to make any difference, nor the same with the cache folder but it can resolve other issues, just not this particular one.
NOTE Before others try this fix I strongly suggest you try the solutions suggested by Apple and those on the very good XLab web site. Here are a few related articles:
XLab. The most comprehensive guide to the Help issues.Check out the 'Help Viewer displays a blank window.' link.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/helpviewer.html
Apple. From the source. Not quite the same symptoms but offers Help advice on
'Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: Mac Help Viewer unexpectedly quits'
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107013
    Solution:
    1. Go to User > Library > Caches > com.apple.helpui [note: you need to launch Help Viewer at least once so that this folder is created]
    2. Delete ALL files/ folders in the com.apple.helpui folder, if any.
    3. Create a new folder inside com.apple.helpui and name it 'Mac Help' [the same as that created automatically by Help Viewer, case sensitive].
    4. Select the new folder and use Command + I to see the folder 'Info'. First
label it red [to aid further diagnostics] and then change ALL the permissions at the bottom to *Read only* [click Details to see the options, not just 'You can'. Include Read only for 'Owner', 'Group' & 'Others'. You will need Admin access for this]. Close the Info panel.
    5. Launch Mac Help from the Finder menu bar. If it was blank before, the Help Viewer screen should show the Mac Help homepage again. Try several links and search and Index. They should all work, and quicker now. Quit and relaunch. This time the Help Viewer works now and no blank screen. The issue with Mac Help is fixed ( but be aware that any other Help folders created could well cause the same issue, so check for these if it still happens and read on for details of how to deal with this other part of the issue)
    *BUT*
Although this resolves the Mac Help issue, AS SOON AS OTHER MAC APPLICATION HELP's ARE LAUNCHED, IT IS MOST LIKELY THE ISSUE WILL RETURN!, hence the labeling of the Help folders red, to track newly created Help folders (i.e. Mail Help, Safari Help etc). If these are launched this automatically creates help folders in com.apple.helpui for them and they also cause the blank screen problem.
So, the best thing is to create Help folders in the same way that you did for Mac Help, for ALL Mac applications to avoid having to do it incrementally as and when you use another Mac application Help [or if you do a search it may well create folders anyhow]. These are the Help folders I have created, with the red label and 'Read only' permissions:
    Activity Monitor Help
    Address Book Help
    AirPort Help
    AppleScript Help
    Automator Help
    Bluetooth Help
    Calculator Help
    Chess Help
    Console Help
    Dictionary Help
    Directory Access Help
    Disk Utility Help
    DVD Player Help
    Font Book Help
    Grapher Help
    iCal Help
    iChat Help
    Image Capture Help
    Mac Help
    Mail Help
    ODBC Administrator Help
    Preview Help
    QuickTime Player Help
    Safari Help
    Script Editor Help
    Sherlock Help
    Stickies Help
    System Profiler Help
    Terminal Help
    TextEdit Help
There are probably more but these are the ones I could find fairly easily. If they are labeled red then it is easy to see if any others appear and cause the issue. Once I have done this I make a backup copy of these folders with the permissions set and archive it for use as and when I need to replace them.
Result: For me and my setup this has resulted in my being able to use Help normally without the blank screen issue for nearly two weeks now since I spent a lot of time looking at this issue. In fact I find Help works a lot faster and suffers fewer delays. Because this only requires amendments to file permissions, in a folder which is automatically replaced if deleted anyhow, I feel it is a safe and easy enough for most users to do if they have this problem.
I hope this offers a solution to other users with the same issue and who have tried the other suggestions (Including Dr. Smoke's and from Apple etc) but still have problems with the blank screen.
    The Cause & Other Notes
Having been frustrated with this issue for several months now I spent some time trying to find the cause. It clearly does not effect everyone, and others have found the suggested fixes, such as trashing the com.apple.helpui cache folder and relevant preference files, have worked for them. It makes it a more complicated problem to identify. It appears perhaps to be related to your type/ speed of connection from the computer to the Apple help servers where the cache folders and files and downloaded from. This seems likely from error messages. It also appears that, for whatever reason, some of those files being automatically created when Help Viewer is launched are the actual problem. In order to explain why I think that, if you have this issue then you should get the exact same repeatable test which led me to find the solution.
    Do this:
    1. Firstly navigate to > Library > Caches > com.apple.helpui and trash this folder. Then before proceeding launch the following apps to help diagnose and follow what is happening:
    a. Console [so you can watch for error message in console.log window]
    b. Activity Monitor [to watch internet traffic during launch and browsing the Help Viewer]
    c. Leave the FInder window so you can watch what happens.
    2. Launch Mac Help from the Finder menu bar. It should launch and show the home page on the screen. Immediately you will see a new com.apple.helpui folder being created. Navigate into this so you can watch what is being placed in the newly created com.apple.helpui folder.
    3. Now click on any of the Help links on the right (not the link to the apple web site). Immediately (slower if dialup and not already connected) you should see traffic over the network as the computer connects to the Apple help servers. Then, in the com.apple.helpui folder you will see a new folder called 'Mac Help'. Also some other numbered (0-15) cache folders which are not of interest right now. And on quit a file called 'TOCCache.plist' which does not effect things. Soon you should see an error in the Console console.log window something like this:
"2005-11-19 01:57:45.585 Help Viewer[1313] Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: * End of archive encountered prematurely at 400"
I am not sure exactly why this is but it appears to be related to some sort of timeout and failure to fully download some items.
    4. Now try to click on any link or Index. For me, nothing happens and I get only more error messages like:
"2005-11-19 02:02:21.190 Help Viewer[1313] Uncaught exception - * End of archive encountered prematurely at 400
    2005-11-19 02:02:21.190 Help Viewer[1313] * Attempt to remove unrecognized exception handler 0xbfffdce0"
The only option is to quit out.
    5. Immediately relaunch Mac Help. If it is like me then it will now be a blank screen accompanied by the following my critical error message:
"2005-11-19 02:03:33.543 Help Viewer[1319] * NSRunLoop ignoring exception '* End of archive encountered prematurely at 400' that raised during posting of delayed perform with target 375df0 and selector '_setupTOC'"
Now, everytime I quit a launch Mac Help it is the same error and blank screen.
This seemed to me to point towards an issue within the com.apple.helpui folder because when it is trashed Help Viewer will launch one time then stop.
So I went through each folder (I had a number of Help folders the first time) and tried moving it out of the folder, rather like testing for bad prefs in OS8.
Eventually I tracked the offending file/s down to this:
    User > Library > Caches > com.apple.helpui > Mac Help > Contents > Resources > English.lproj > pgs > pgs.helpindex
As soon as this file is created then it all stops. Trash this file and relaunch and the homepage appears again until it appears and once again the problem reappears. This is totally repeatable for me.
Once I had isolated the problem file I tried various solutions to resolve it. The first was to replace it with the same file which is already in the System within the MacHelp.help documentation here (the system Library, not the User path)
    Library > Documentation > Help > MacHelp.help
Copy MacHelp.help and then use Command + I and 'Show Package Contents' to navigate to:
    MacHelp.help > Contents > Resources > English.lproj > pgs > pgs.helpindex
(right at the bottom of the pgs folder with hundreds of .html files)
I then replaced the existing pgs.helpindex with this one. It is different at it has an earlier Created date of 16/03/2005 (my vary), the one in the cache folder is Created 20/10/2005 (may vary?)
This allowed Help Viewer to launch correctly, but after a short time and re-launch it returned to the blank screen. Examining the file showed it was being overwritten by the later downloaded version, the one causing the problem. This led me to change the permissions to 'Read only' to prevent it being overwritten and after this the Help Viewer worked normally on relaunches.
I also changed and altered the permissions on the pgs/pgs2.helpindex folder in the same directory as the pgs folder as it seemed to also cause a problem.
So, finally I resolved the problem, with no error messages, the Help Viewer loading correctly and a working Help. However, I noticed that after a while the blank screen came back. Knowing the pgs.helpindex was OK it seemed likely that other .helpindex files in other Help folders created in the com.apple.helpui folder. This proved the case because, on trashing the new Help folder, it launched again. Swapping the downloaded .helpindex in say, Mail Help, and changing the permissions fixed it, until another Apple application Help folder was created and it re-occurred. The problem does not occur with all the Mac application Helps, but with some (notably for me, Mail Help, Safari Help and some others).
Finally I found that rather than digging into the apps contents I could get the same fix and also quicker Help browsing by simply creating the actual Help folders as described above and ensuring the .helpindex (or other folders/ files like idx) was not created.
From nearly two weeks trials it so far appears to completely resolve this issue.
Just be aware of any new Help folders/ files being created.
The are a few other observations:
    1. I tried just altering the permissions on the actual com.apple.helpui folder to 'Read only' but whilst it allowed the Help Viewer to open fine, it broke links within the application Help windows.
    2. I have not tried many Helps on other non Apple applications. I find that Toast help triggers error messages:
    "2005-11-19 02:27:02.229 Help Viewer[1340] -[IdxSearchController openIndices:] caught a VTWIN exception. Bad index file is /Applications/Toast 7 Titanium/Toast Titanium.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Toast Help/Toast Help idx
It is not possible to change the 'Toast Help idx' as it is an exec file. The errors do not seem to break Help Viewer. I had similar error messages from Quicktime Help when it loaded. I suspect that the Toast help is broken for similar reasons as mac Help b (it works for links to installed pages but not external ones). But it could be from the alterations to the Help folders. Either way at least Help works.
    3. It is possible to get most .helpindex files from the relevant application contents but just using the Help folders is a quicker solution.
    4. I can't help feel that the difference between those that have or do not have these issues is a slower connection, i.e. non-broadband. I have a 64k ISDN connection through a router which is pretty much 'always on' with solid 7KB speeds, but it seems this is insufficient for Help to work properly. I read elsewhere that connection speed appears to be an issue and Help is sensitive to this. It would be interesting to know what type of connection people with the issue have. I also have a hardware firewall in the router which may be a factor but it does not stop any other normal traffic and allows the files through anyhow. It has been in place for 6 years and with no issues. Just wanted to note it.
    5. Certainly for my situation, it appears that the files being downloaded from the Apple help servers are actually causing the problem at my end. I can't explain why or how other than the tests explained above are repeatable and that using the same file but from the System file resolves the problem. It remains unclear why a slower connection would lead to files downloading which affect some people but not others? It may be something totally different of course but the error messages in Console do seem to point towards this.
    6. I imagine the reason why the files and folders are downloaded are to ensure that they are kept up to date, as the pgs.helpindex for instance is a later creation date. However I do not seem to have any problems browsing or looking at topics, especially with the 'Include product Support Searches' option selected in the Help View menu. It means that there is extra traffic but gives a wider range of responses from Apple. Perhaps it is better to deselect this option if you have a slow dialup connection?
    Summary
I hope that this solution can help others with this issue and perhaps other related problems. There is no way of me testing it further and I do not know how others who seemingly do not have a problem can check this. I just know it resolved it for me. I am no expert but a long time Mac user who is used to simple and elegant functionality, not the ongoing saga of the current Help, and wanted the thing just to 'work'.
    Good luck
    Simon
