I am paranoid about malware. I go to the Mozilla site, click download and up pops a box that says its from tux.rainside.sk Am I being hijacked?

bottom line I am not sure if I am getting a real version of Firefox or has someone redirected me to a rogue site that will install malware? Why wouldn't the dialog box say run or save a file from mozilla.com?

Mozilla uses mirrors from all over the world for downloading and updating Firefox. tux.rainside.sk is one of the places that is used, it is one of the primary sites for downloading Firefox in Europe.

  • An Animated GIF displays, i.e. moves, for about 5 minutes, then freezes. Other GIFs from the site work indefinitely, and this GIF works indefinitely on IE. Why does it freeze in Firefox?

An Animated Avatar GIF file moves as expected for about 5 minutes, and then freezes. Other animated avatars from the same site work fine, and move indefinitely. To confirm that the site had not exchanged the file for a non-animated version, I right-clicked and selected 'View Image Info' and when I did so, it moved for about half a second. (The image file was the one uploaded.) Loaded the page in IE, this avatar moves indefinitely.
Any ideas why an animated GIF stops in Firefox?

The answer is that Animated GIF files include a Loop Enable Flag as well as a Loop Limit Count. This GIF had a count which should have allowed it to loop for almost 2 hours. But in Firefox it only loops for about 5 minutes.
It appears Firefox is misinterpreting this value to be a Frame Count rather than a Cycle Count.
Is there any Firefox Employees reading this, and can acknowledge this has been added to their Opportunity (a.k.a. Bug) List?

  • What can I do about an iPhone 4S where the on/off button has quit working?

I've heard this is a common problem.   Will Apple pay for fixing it as a product defect?

You can make an appointment at the genius bar at your local Apple Store or take it to the AASP in your country and see what they have to say about it. If it's under warranty and hasn't been physically damaged, it should be replaced. If it isn't under warranty, you'll have to pay.

  • I'm trying to make a ring to for iPhone and about 20 sec into the playing of the song it fades out and goes silent. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

I'm trying to make a ring to for iPhone and about 20 sec into the playing of the song it fades out and goes silent. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Im not sure what garage band is, but i can tell you the way apple recommends making ringtones. Highlight a song in iTunes, right click and select get info. Goto the options tab and youll see the time lengths (write down the ending time) for the start time type in where you want the ringtone to start, ringtones can only be 30 sec long so make the ending time 30 sec later. Exit it out of the info and while song highlighted goto the "advanced" tab at the top of iTunes where you will see an option that says "create aac version". after creating the aac version you will have a duplicate song in your iTunes, change the original back to the correct time length. Take the 30 sec aac version and drag it to your desktop, right click the icon and click "preferences" You will then be able to change the name of the file which will be somethign to the effect of "songnamehere.m4a" you just change the m4a to m4r. you now have a ringtone, drag the new file to iTunes where it will pop up in a new tab labled ringtones. If you cannot change the name of the file when it is on your desktop let me know and i will give you instuctions how to be able to change it. Once you get it figured out you can use any song you have on iTunes to make a ringtone.

Under Pricing and Availablity in this press release they mention 2 Gigs of ram.

my iPhone 5s does not turn on at all , so I can't reset as it is recommended here in support... iTunes message that is in recovery mode... gives Error 40

Hold down the Power and Home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears. That forces it into a reboot. If that doesn't work, contact Apple for warranty replacement.

  • Paranoid about FULL setup on new PowerBook

Just updated my 2003 G4 PowerBook with the 2.66GHz 13" i7 PowerBook Pro. My old G4 is running so slow that when ever I do video I go through Mac Janitor, Disk Utility, reboot and make sure the AirPort is OFF and FCP manages to work for about 20-30 mins then it can't handle more that 4 or 5 layers. Managed to get that Stupid Trojan Horse the redirects URLs in Safari and CAN NOT get rid of it, so ...
I am REALLY Paranoid about setting any web stuff at all on the new one. Just putting FCP Studio, After Effects, Photoshop and any other video programs on it. Used the web to update drivers but NO MAIL tool.
My plan is to use the G4 for internet stuff, script writing (I guess that could go into the new one) and anything NONE VIDEO. Probably wouldn't have updated the G4 if I hadn't just bought an HD video cam that uses AVCHD and needed an Intel chip.
SOOO... Am I crazy? Or what?

Malware is always looking for lazy users, or that more than half will still click on and open email junk, spam, phising and URLs.
The most recent java hole, Windows only, required zero action from user except for a web page to load.
Security is gradually being taken more seriously.
I'd guess your i7 has enough RAM, power, and faster disk I/O (and nice new and clean) that it isn't bogged down as easily. Still a good idea from time to time to clean out caches and such.
There have been cpu resource bugs in audio codec in 10.6.2+ (just playing iTunes or other media, external speakers, Firewire audio) affecting Nehalem-based Macs.
On your PC I'd use MS Security Essentials, but on Mac... ClamXav (part of the Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner utility $9) - I've been using Panther-Tiger and later versions of the utility and found, when there is something to deal with, to be a good and well supported tool.
Windows 7 is hardened and rugged, for driving down streets of Baghdad during a firefight, while OS X is safe only by small target, not beause it is inherently more secure though. (And that isn't just me talking but others, too.)

  • Can I safely transfer all my music on my iPhone to my new Macbook pro or do I need to use a Time Machine to transfer my old iTunes to my new laptop? Am paranoid about losing music

Title says it all. I have had a bad experience with losing my music before and I'm very paranoid about transfers, so I want to make sure I go about it right. I would like to do it myself if possibly and quickly.

The iphone is not a backup device.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backu copy of your computer.  Copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • Paranoid about Software Update

I've been running Os 10.5.1 for a month on a brand new Intel 24in iMac and I discovered from VersionTracker tonight that a Front Row update v2.1.2 is out. Software Update has downloaded plenty of stuff (on manual checks, not automatic) including the new versions of Quicktime and iTunes but it hasn't ever offered me a Front Row update. My installed version is 1.0 and I was surprised to see on VersionTracker that Software Update has apparently failed to notify me about Front Row 1.0.1, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.3, 1.3.1 and now 2.1.2.
Some sort of conspiracy surely? Now I'm getting paranoid, is there a neat list somewhere of the latest versions of all the Leopard system software components and bundled applications?
    Simon

    pr,
Leopard came with version 2.x of Front Row.
The Front Row that is in the applications folder is basically for the people that do not have a remote and is listed as 1.0
To find out which version of Front Row you actually have, look inside the System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row
You should however show the Front Row update of 2.1.2 in Software Update.
If you don't, you can download it directly from Apple as you probably already know.

  • Paranoid about battery?

Is any one else paranoid about their batteries? I have a new iPad, and a Macbook Pro retina, but I am always so paranoid about the battery capactity degrading over time. It henders my enjoyment of the product, because I hate that it gets worse over time. I can't stop worrying that the battery is getting worse and it is my fault.

I have many Apple products and never worry about the battery life or anything else's life at all and it is always completely fine.
For example my MacBook Air is on about 600 charge cycles and 84% battery health which is more or less on par with the 1000 charges -> 80% thing.
I never ever do anything whatsoever to look after my battery health.
To be honest I never do anything to look after any aspect of my computer and they always work fine, and on the rare occasion there is a problem and I need to go to Apple store they are always extremely helpful.
This is the point in AppleCare, that you have peace of mind. If you are constantly worrying about looking after your machine, you don't have peace of mind!
The product should be able to go through normal use without being treated like a baby, and if it cant, well that's what the Genius bar is for.
    I hope I helped

  • Pop-ups. I have deleted cookies, checked security etc. worried about malware.

    Hello!
I recently tried to reinstall MS word but I think I must have come across a fraudulent site. Now I get a pop-up almost every click! The pop-ups seem quite intelligent, for example, if I search malware I get a pop-up for MacKeeper (which I would never click on), or if I go to Netflix I get Megaflix an so on..
It is criminally expensive to speak to a specialist on the phone, and I have already deleted cookies, uninstalled any software I don't recognise, checked security settings, reinstalled adblocker; I don't know what else I can do...
My browser is Safari, but I checked Chrome and got the same results.
    HELP ME?!

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that this Internet criminal has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • HELP! I had a Flashback Trojan/Malware on my Mac, I deleted it in trash, and now my Mac won't start.

At first my Mac Finder showed n81, n82, etc when you right-click it, instead of the commands " open new finder window", "hide" etc. I also noticed that sometimes, when I would go to sites such as facebook, it would redirect to a different site and I'd have to type in the address again to get to the site. Nothing else was wrong with it. Safari was not shutting down. It wasn't slow.
I did some research and found that I probably have the Flashback Trojan/Malware virus (whatever that is?) And so I followed what some people did (which got their mac fixed) .. I downloaded clamvax and tinkertool to find the malware (hidden files) and I deleted it in trash.. my computer seemed fine but when I restarted it, it wont turn on anymore.. the screen remains blue, the mouse could still be moved, but it stays that way..
did I lose all my files? am I being hacked as we speak? Is this virus very dangerous?! I am very paranoid and know nothing about this kind of stuff so please help!
BTW, the malware was from the game Farm Frenzy.. I have no idea how I got this... I never play online games.

@Thomas, Thanks for jumping in. I had to take my wife to a Doctor appointment and things went down hill from there.
I note that you are using Mac OS X 10.5.x.  It's important to understand that the Java vulnerabilities that allowed this malware to get established on your machine cannot be fixed in 10.5.x.  You would need to upgrade to at least 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to be able to get a version of Java with those vulnerabilities fixed.  (Correct me if I'm wrong there, Al!)
That's 100% correct. Natalia has the distinction of being the first OS X 10.5 user confirmed to be infected by Flashback as far as I can tell. That operating system is becoming increasingly dangerous as the days go by. The OS has not been updated since Aug 2009 and the last Security and Java updates were in June 2011. There is no XProtect system and more and more third party's have dropped support in updating their Applications.
    Natalia_ wrote:
I actually ran disk utility, and it said that the Macintosh HD is fine... I also tried safe mode/safe boot and did the FSCK command.. even that said that my laptop was fine? but somehow it still stays blue when I start up!
And I think it probably is fine, except that something is hanging during the initial loading process. Could be most anything.
As for my files, I appreciate your advice but I am scared I might do something wrong and mess my laptop up even more!
There is almost no chance of that and at this point it should be obvious to you that if the files on your laptop are that important, you should already have a backup.
I will take it to Apple and hopefully they can help me... because it seems that my files aren't wiped out... yet... It still displayed that I had my files in there..
One word of caution, then. I have been told that Apple has instructed their support folks not to attempt to clean up a malware infection. If I were you I wouldn't bring it up unless you have to.
By the way, while the disk was running, it was making very loud noises.. humming/grinding/etc... what could this mean?
Only one thing in my experience, you're hard drive is toast. All the more reason to try and get all the data you can off it immediately.
The only way to test it is to do a surface scan which Disk Utility cannot do. You would need a third party utility to do that. If it tells you there are bad sectors, that is 100% proof that it's going bad, as modern hard drives repair themselves of bad sectors until they run out of reserves to substitute.
