I think it must be an IMAP account then, & in Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Advanced>Keep copies for Offline viewing:>Don't keep copies, then on the Server, or maybe it's just this one itself, but on the Server you have a setting to remove eMails after 30 days.
If it's a POP account we'd have to investigate that... but you didn't say so I'm guessing here.

Why do emails sent to my iCloud alias address sometimes get bounced back to the sender

I'm using iCloud email on a Macbook Pro Retina display 15" laptop with Yosemite 10.10.1 I'm using an alias address for much of my email. Fairly often, messages sent to the alias address are bounced back to the sender with a message that says "illegal alias". But often the same sender can get a message to me without problems. Any ideas about this sporadic and annoying problem?

Hi there, this was the initial reason that I joined the Apple Support Community. I can tell you that I'm facing the same issue. I've switched over to the '@icloud.com' domain in the past few days after using the icloud mail feature for a couple of months with the '@me.com' domain.
In the iCloud.com settings within the Mail 'app' both my email addresses (the same name, only seperated with the iCloud & Me domains) appear with the option of selecting which one I'd prefer to receive mail at.
I'm just going to stop there to make sure we're both on the same page,

My emails are getting bounced back to the sender. It says it would have caused my mailbox quota to be exceeded.

Why are my emails getting bounced back to sender? The error message to me says it would have caused my bytes quote to be exceeded. I have no excess of messages in my trash or inbox.

It might be helpful if you disclose who your email provider is.
As stated above, the mail messages on the server may have exceeded what your provider allows for and if you have the mail account to never delete messages from the server on the iPad, that could be why you are getting the messages.
In other words, you can delete messages on the iPad and they could still be on the server.

What id shows in Settings > iTunes & App Store ? If it's the old one then tap on it and log out of it and then log in with the updated version

Welcome to the Apple community.
Once you have created a rescue address, you cannot delete it, nor can you change it to the same address as used by your ID. There are numerous providers you can get additional email addresses from, such as Hotmail, Yahoo, Google etc etc.

If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact Apple ID Support, upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
You will need to show patience with the procedure and be prepared to demonstrate without question that the account belongs to you. Don’t expect access to be restored immediately and if you aren’t the owner of the Apple ID registered to the device the account won’t be reset.

Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to perform unauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the headingBlocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. Thanks so much but none of that helped. It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive. I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!

CHANGING APPLE ID/EDIT ACCOUNT INFORMATION/CHANGE ITUNES COUNTRY
Tap Settings / iTunes & App Stores, then tap the Apple ID signed in. Sign out of the current Apple ID account and then sign in with another account or create a new Apple ID http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2731?viewlocale=en_US
Go to settings/facetime and tap the ID there and log out and log in with new ID.
Go to settings/messages and turn off imessages wait 30 seconds and turn it back on, go to “receive messages at” tap on the ID there, sign out and sign in with new ID.
Go to settings/icloud and delete the account and when prompted select “keep information on your device” then turn it back on with the new ID.
To edit account information tap Settings / iTunes & App Stores / Apple ID: / View Apple ID
To change your iTunes Store country, sign in to the account for the iTunes Store region you would like to use, tap Settings/iTunes & App Store/Apple ID/View Apple ID/Country/Region
