I am trying to update my version of firefox but it keeps telling me that i don't have sufficient privaleges to update, what does that mean?

I am running mac os x 10.5.8, my firefox crashes during use at various times. I am trying to upgrade from firefox 8.0.1 to 9.0 but when i try to install it will not let me because it says i don't have sufficient privileges. What does that mean and how can i fix?
