I am unable to hold down command + select and highlight different texts.

I am aware and have been using the "command+drag" in order to select different texts in different areas; however, I am now unable to do so. When I hold down the command button, and drag over different texts in different places, the highlight instantly disappears. I am only thus, able to highlight one portion of texts at one time.

I do not have a clue about enabling non-contiguous select in Pages. A quick look at the preferences and menu items did not show me anything.
Firefox seems to allow non-contiguous selection.
Safari, No
Thunderbird email client, Yes (but is from the makers of Firefox, so most likely has common code).
Reeder, No (RSS feed reading client)
Messages, No
Adium, No (3rd party chat client)
Evernote, No
iTunes, No (but it teases you by highlighting while dragging across the 2nd text area, but when you release the mouse, it unhighlights)
Terminal, Yes
iTerm, No (3rd party terminal emulator)
So it would seem this is a function of the application.

It could be your timing if on a bluetooth keyboard. I find it best to hit the keys as soon as i hear the chime, release and hit them again but this time holding them before the chime ends....like a fake pump in football.
But....you can always open up system preferences, startup disk, and select your bootable clone for booting. If it doesn't show up there, the Mac doesn't think it's bootable.

If you're pushing Option at the exact moment you're clicking the Dock icon, it's supposed to do that. Wait until just after clicking it.

When i hold down command and r at the same time after restarting it comes up with a black screen and a lock symbol and a field bellow where you would input a password, i have tried ALL of my possible passwords including my password i use for the mac and it stil will not work! all that happens is the text i put in bellow erases itself after hiting enter or clicking the arrow.

I've tried my apple ID password and that doesn't work either . I don't recall seting a password for an encrypted disk either :/ if it was for an encrypted disk, would it be in keychain anywhere? if so how can i find it?

Thanks for prompt response - I tried what you suggested but I'm afraid it has not helped. It seems as though the line of number keys along the top aren't actually doing what is printed on them. Some are OK, but the further towards the right hand side of the keyboard you go, the less predicatable it becomes. So whilst the second key from the left gives me 1 and ! when holding the shift key, by the time I get to the 6 when I press and hold shift I get ^ rather than & symbol which is what is actually printed on the key. The & symbol is actually on the next key along - and when I hit the key with 8 I get * rather than the ( which is printed on they key but actually located on the next key along. Things get even more muddled by the time I am over on the right hand side as rather than a question mark (I have had to type the word as I cannot find the symbol anywhere!) I get this _ and the other symbol marked on the key is a comma, but I get - instead. It is going to drive me mad if every time I want to type something it is a guessing game....! What do you suggest - question mark

It's just the battery sign - nothing else. I've tried to reboot by holding down both power and home key for 10+ seconds, waiting for the apple logo - but nothing happens. It's plugged into the imac at the moment. I tried to recharge it overnight using the normal charger - but no luck. There is a thread or two about the home button and how to fix it at least temporally. It sounds like some people have found it to be a rather permanent fix. Do search on something like "Home button won't work". It has something to do with putting the charging cable into the phone and applying a little extra pressure upward on the key. Don't take my word for it though look for the thread/s. You said originally that your "Power" button was broken and the thread I have seen is about the Home Button.

open itunes on computer
plug cable into computer not iOS device
turn phone off
hold home button and plug cable into phone. do not release home button until an itunes graphic appears on device.
look to computer should have message about recovery mode click ok and restore

You have done everything correctly so far. Try charging again with the wall charger for at least 30 minutes. Maybe the iPhone will turn on itself. If not then try the Reset again, hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone restarts, keep holding for at least 30 seconds if necessary. If still nothing, make appointment with Apple Genius and have them fix or replace your iPhone under Warranty coverage.

Yesterday, I have downloaded the APPSGONEFREE and there is one App called the Victorian Mystery that is still free and i downloaded it. After a few minutes it pop up on my iphone homescreen, it can't be loaded. So I tried to delete it but it cant be deleted. (there is no x mark on top of it). I then use my itunes to synchronize it through my iphone but it wasnt able to delete it. If you can actually get to restore, maybe (I estimate a 0.01% chance) you'll be able to do a backup before the restore. Actually, from the symptoms you describe, I suspect a restore won't work either and you'll need to do a recovery.
Just in case, if you need to recover (restore fails), here's how. Note you may have to try to get into recovery mode more than once.
