I am unable to install Virtual Machines on my Mid-2013 MacBook Air

Dear Apple Support Community,
I have recently moved away from a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro to a new Mid-2013 MacBook Air. As much as it pains me, I have a need to install a virtual machine running Windows 7 in order to utilize an application called vSphere. The vSphere web interface is too unreliable to use via any web browser, so running a Windows VM is the only way forward.
However, when using VMWare Fusion 5 (I know 6 is available, but I do not have a license for it) or VirtualBox (very latest version) I receive an error which states that my CPU is not 64-bit compatible. I was under the impression that since Snow Leopard (10.6) was release that Mac OS was fully 64-bit. My MacBook Air is currently running Mavericks (10.9.1). It has a 1.3GHz Intel Core i5 CPU.
I read that Apple restricts access to the EFI firmware settings, as I originally thought it was a case of enabling Virtualization capabilities on the processor. To further add to the dilemma my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro has no issues running VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox, so I am at a loss as to why I am unable use these virtualization platforms on my new Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I remember reading somewhere that the new macbook air's from 2013 have a 64 bit core i5 4250u processors.
Also intel mentions it here:

  • My Mid-2011 Macbook Air becomes extremely hot when installing apps from the Mac App Store and when deleting apps

My Mid-2011 Macbook Air 13-inch (OSX 10.8.1 Mountain Lion) becomes hot to the touch when trying to delete large documents, watching videos after waking it from sleep-mode and when installing applications from the Mac App Store. This has also been happening with OSX Lion before I upgraded it to Mountain Lion.

What needed to be done the day that you set up the new Mac was go into the Mac App Store (MAS), sign into your iTunes/MAS Apple ID, go to the Purchases pane and Accept the iLife apps that would have been there in a special section. That would have sent you Mac's unique identifier code to Apple's servers and verified that this Mac was eligible for the bundled iLife suite and then registered these apps into your MAS account.
You might try going to  ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist, delete the adption plist, restart the Mac and then go to the Purchaes pane and see if you can Accept the apps into your account.

  • Can't install os mavericks because don't have macbook air flash storage firmware update 1.1; can't install firmware update because OS is too old (10.7.4)

Hello, I have a Macbook Air, bought May 2012 or so that came with OS 10.7.4 on it.  Did not try to upgrade OS until recently.  Tried to upgrade to OS Mavericks, however received error message 'Before installing OS X Mavericks this system requires MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1."  I then downloaded and attempted to install said Firmware Update 1.1, but received another error message, to wit: "This update requires 10.7.5 or 10.8.5 or later"
Who can help me out the this Catch-22?  I thought about first updating to OS 10.8, but apparently that is no longer available?

    Hi CursedIn,
If the Firmware update required for Mavericks requires 10.7.5 to install, you may be able to download it directly from the following link:
OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo)

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

OK. Now, you say you got this alert through App Store when trying to download Mavericks or after you downloaded it and were trying to install it? Which is the correct case?
The error you are getting may sometimes occur when the computer has already been updated, but I don't know why you would be getting this message. I can only suggest that you take it in for service to find out why this is happening.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X has got its own security systems, so you don't need any antivirus. Furthermore, they will only slow down your computer. If you want more information, read > http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg
If you want an antivirus, install ClamXav, but you don't need an antivirus

  • Install Snow Leopard on a 2013 MacBook Air

    Hello.
I'm quite interested in buying a 2013 MacBook Air.
as far as I'm aware, that Mac model will have OS X Mavericks unstalled, but, due to work related circunstances, I would like to create a partition, and to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on that partition. Basically, i would liek to make a dual boot: Snow Leopard / Mavericks.
Question: Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on a 2013 MacBook Air?!
(And yes, I'm aware that Snow Leopard doesn't bring most of Mavericks functions!)
Thank you for any hel you may provide me.
    All the best!

  • Can i install os x mountain lion in another macbook air with my apple id?

Can i install os x mountain lion in another macbook air with my apple id?

It depends. If you purchase an OS upgrade it can be installed on up to 5 devices that are registered with your ID. However if you purchase a computer with that OS you cannot install it on other computers you own. The OS that comes with your computer is tied to the computer and not your ID.

  • Unable to install Snow Leopard to a brand new Macbook Pro

I have a new MB Pro that I'm unable to install 10.6.3 onto. This is a machine I got for work, and it has a corporate image on it. I thought I'd be able to create an additional partition on the hard drive and do a fresh install of 10.6.3 on it.
If I just put the disc in and boot, holding down <option>, then I can choose the Mac OS Install Disc. However, after a few minutes, the DVD spins down and the machine just sits there.
If I boot into the existing partition, and run the installer from there, I can point it to the new partition and it starts installing. However, with around 36 minutes left, the machine reboots, and ends up sitting on the grey screen with the Apple logo. Again, I can hear the DVD drive spin down.
I tried this with 10.6.0 discs as well, but since this is a brand new machine I realized that it would probably need 10.6.3. Unfortunately, even that isn't working.
Is it possible that our IT department has done something that would prevent me from booting off of install media?
    Thanks for any help...

It sounds like your computer is trying to use the install disk and is having some issues reading it.
Your IT department may have put a firmware password on the computer (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352) but I don't think this is the case as you are able to use the option key to enter the start up manager and select an install disk an start the boot process.
It might be time saving to just ask your IT department if there is something about the computer's setup that prevents you from booting to an Install disk. A basic task that many users want to accomplish requires that ability, repairing the disk with the install disk: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782
Make sure you are using the original install disk that came with the computer. If you are using the original Mac OS Install disk then check the disk in good lighting for scratches or smudges. A dirty or damaged disk may not respond like it should.
Do you have an original Mac OS X 10.6 Retail Install disk? If so, try using the C key or option key with that disk. It should at least start up using that disk and eventually (1-5 minutes) bring you to the Language Selection screen. If it does then you have dirty or damaged install disk. Try cleaning the disk with a soft, clean, lint-free cotton cloth.
    Hope that helps.

  • Install Leopard (10.5) to mid 2010 MacBook Pro 6,2

    Hello,
I need to run some older software that only runs on Leopard (10.5), not Snow Leopard and above. Is there any way for me to install Leopard on a partition? I tried booting off of a Leopard DVD I found but the installer does not even start. It freezes after you select the DVD (held alt-option while booting).
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Jubei

If your machine came with Snow leopard installed, it can't run Leopard except perhaps in a virtual machine via Parallels, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox. I can't explain how to do that, having no experience with doing it myself.
It definitely can't boot into Leopard.

  • Trying to install Win 8.1 with Bootcamp on 2013 Macbook Air

I went to the MS website today and bought a Windows 8.1 license for $119.99.  (I need this software to run some windows-only stuff for work.) Then I tried downloading it to my Macbook Air for use with Bootcamp.
But what MS sold me was a Windows executable... and Bootcamp needs an ISO.  So I went looking for ISO's, and downloaded it from two torrent sites. I made two attempts to get Bootcamp to work with these bootleg ISO's.  In each attempt, Bootcamp burned them to my USB stick, then I downloaded the latest Bootcamp drivers partitioned the HD and started the Windows install.
The windows setup program failed, saying there was no install image on my USB stick.  Maybe I need a different USB file?  Or a different Win 8.1 license?  If I have to go buy an external DVD drive just to install this crapware on my Mac, I'll be ******.
    Can anyone give me suggestions?
    Thanks

Is there anyone nearby with a 64 bit Windows machine (it will need to be 64 bit).
I had one already and downloaded the setup.exe, ran it and once downloaded it gives you the chance to make install media. In that option is a chance to create an iso file and that iso can then be used by Bootcamp to install Windows.
I'm not sure there's a way to do it with a Mac. Maybe someone else will give you a better way.
