How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
Sluggish Finder - Bunch of icons on your desktop? An overcrowded desktop slows down your Mac.
Get rid of needless Finder calculations - Open a window in Finder/View/Show View Options: ensure "Calculate All Sizes" option is unchecked.
Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck. You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is. If your web browser specifically performs slowly, quit and relaunch it.
If browser remains sluggish, empty its cache.
Safari/Empty Cache
Firefox/Preferences - select the Network tab of the Advanced preferences and click the "Clear Now" button in the "Offline Storage" area.
Application related - Launch "Activity Monitor" - Applications/Utilities - click the CPU heading and see what float to the top. If an application takes up a large chunk of CPU and won't let it go, it could be dragging down your Mac's performance. Quit it by clicking the Quit Process button at the top of the Activity Monitor window.
Too little ram - max out your ram.
It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions. Which model Macbook Pro are you using?

I have Lightroom 6 (not CC) on a Windows machine. I'm prompted to log into Creative Cloud when I restart my computer (I don't have, use, or pay for Creative Cloud), and then when I launch Lightroom, it tells me to use the application I have to log into my Adobe account...AGAIN! And then to further add insult to injury, I'm prompted to enter in the license number of my product. I've gone through this process a dozen times now...SCREAM!!!

Which OS X is installed on your Mac ?
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac. The version is noted there.
Make sure your Mac OS X software is up to date.
Disconnect the iPad from your Mac.
Open System Preferences > Software Update > Check Now
If any updates are required, make sure to restart your Mac after the updates are installed then connect your iPad and see if iTunes recognizes it under Devices. -
This community is great -- very helpful. What is the best way to read "word" docs on my brand new iPad 2? Is there an app for that?
If you're just reading them from email attachments, you can just open it to "view" the document.
However, if you wish to do editing and work, you'll need an application. I use Documents to Go, but there are other versions that people are happy with - do a search in the App store for "office suite" or "word processing".
The next challenge is getting docs back and forth. Doc2Go and others have their own ways to physically sync docs when connected to a computer; you can also email changed/revised/new documents from the iPad to yourself. However, I use a "cloud service" called DropBox that stores docs in the cloud (so I can get to them anywhere) - I paid for the Premium version of Docs2Go to allow that kind of syncing. -
UML too slow, so what is the best processor ?
I use Java Studio 8 to develop my new game. The game engine is going to be very powerful so I use JS8 UML features to see things in their globality. But it is extremely slow ( 8 seconds to show a class diagram ) on an Athlon 64 @ 3.2Ghz with 1GB RAM.
Can I expect some improvements by using a P4 with a dual core ? What are the options to disable to boost class diagram generation ?I am also experiencing extremely slow responses when dealing with UML diagrams.

Platform: Windows XP Pro, SP 2, JDK 1.5.0.5
Hardware: Mobile AMD Athlon 64 (running 32 bit XP edition) 4000+ 1.58 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X600 Video card (with it's own memory so no system RAM is used)
After initially trying Studio 8, and experiencing very slow responses, and even crashes on an old system (756 Mb Ram 1.75 GHz process), I purchased the new system described above. Studio 8 does not crash on the new system, but is still extremely slow (10 to 15 second wait, although performance noticeably improved over the older machine) when doing anything, even just moving a class to a different area of the diagram.
I looked at the jstudio.conf file and noticed that an Xms of 256 and an Xmx of 512 is being used (I don't know what the PermSize is though). This seems to be an adequate setting as the java process from Studio shows about 347 Mb. I haven't yet tried to change the heap setting yet.
I hope these performance problems can be resolved, they're the only thing holding me back from making the switch and migration from Eclipse 3.1 -
I have windows Vista and have the updated version of Firefox. I also can run OPERA and LUNASCAPE with no problems. When running Firefox I have to constant re log-in to my Yahoo account every time I leave the page. For example: I log in to check my email on Yahoo and then leave my email page. Then when I return to recheck my email I have to log in all over again. I can't stay logged in. If I run my OPERA browser I stay logged in for days without having to sign in all over again.
Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.

To clear cache and cookies do the following:
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and ''Cookies'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.

Apple engineers say, that to reset SMC, you follow the procedure outlined in KBase Article HT1379.
How much you've posted to the forums is irrelevant rkaufmann87. You're not one of the engineers who created the product. The engineers who created the product, say to follow the steps outlined in that article HT1379.
The procedure you listed is incorrect and will not work to reset SMC on an iMac. Read the article. It's there in black and white, with very clear steps. As the article states, you have to unplug the power cable from the back of the machine, wait 15 seconds, plug it back in, then wait 5 seconds before turning it on. The article says nothing about holding the power button for 5 seconds.
People come in here, for computer science advice. I cited my source, for this scientific procedure. My source, is an article from the computer scientists who created the iMac product. I'm also an Apple certified repair technician - so I listen to what the Apple engineers say.
Can you cite your *official* source for your incorrect procedure? Didn't think so. -
My computer is running super slow. I can correct the problem briefly by zapping the PRAM but is resumes as a problem after a few hours. I have good time machine (capusle) backup daily. I have done a disk verify and there doesn't appear to be anything wrong there.

I was given an older iMac (from 2010) on the condition i first create a complete, reliable copy of everything on her hard drive and then wipe it clean. Is Time Machine the best way to do this so that she can use this data when she needs it? I started Time Machine but it is so slow, at this rate it will take at least 10 days to do the first backup. I'm already on the 3rd day now at about 2.5 GB per day. Is there a better way that is reliable? perhaps some kind of disc copy? This iMac has 4gb memory,processor: 3.06 gHz Intel core i3, model iMac11,2, 1 processor, 2 cores. thank you

I'm starting to notice something. Of all of the users who are (rightfully) complaining about the whine problem, it seems that none of them are those with the 2.16GHz upgrade. I recently ordered my MacBook Pro (and therefore do not have it), but a quick glance over the forums affirms my suspicion.

I Just recieved my 2.16GHz MBP today, and it does not have to LCD inverter buzz. I do however have a slight CPU whine but it is not terrible. Furthermore, I don't care much for notebook trackpads and am using a bluetooth mouse. The Mac Book is silent when the mouse is connected. I've read on these forums, that Apple knows of the CPU whine issue and a software update will be released. So far this is a very cool machine. I am calibrating the battery so I haven't tried out everything yet. By the way, I am using The MouseBT by Chwang Yi (formally MacMice) and I like it so far. I like that it's very similar to the Mighty Mouse which I use on my G4. Good Luck with your MacBook!

"Slow menus" - what's the problem?
Hi Swing people,
Here is my first experiment with menus. For some reason they seem "slow" compared to menus in other apps. Is this because of me (and my bad programming) or is Java menus just "slow"?
Also, I'm running OS X and would like my menus to be in the menu bar at the top of my screen as "real" OS X apps. How do I do that?
