Look for them on your old computer, when found copy the files to a USB drive and move them to the new computer.

Open System Preferences and select Users & Groups. Assuming the migration was successful, you now have a new account - it was migrated. Migration Assistant doesn't copy files, it copies accounts. To see your documents you'll need to log into the account you migrated. (It has the same password it did on the other computer.)

  • I transferred about 400 gigs of data from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac using Migration Assistant, but it doesn't show on Finder. How can I locate my data?

I transferred about 400 gigs of data from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac using Migration Assistant, but can't find any of my data on Finder. I'm thinking that the data got transferred but not cataloged. Finder shows about 400 gigs of my hard drive being used, but the files it shows don't come anywhere close to 400 gigs. How can I find out what is really on the hard drive and how can I access my MacBook files I transferred?

I suggest that you start over, boot into Internet recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, erase and reformat the HD with one partition and GUID option, quit Disk Utility, restore the OS, and on first boot, use the Setup Assistant to migrate from the MacBook, following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide. If that doesn't solve your problem, contact Apple's Support. If they recommend the same steps, I'd opt to return the machine and get another (you can do that the first 14 days you own it, no questions asked).

  • Can't find data after transfer between macs using migration assistant

I wanted to transfer data between my Macbook air using Mountain lion and a MacBook pro using Mavericks. I did it using migration assistant through Wi-Fi. The process was completed without problems but I can't find the data on the MacBook pro!
It was my pictures folder, about 50Go and I can't find it anywhere on the new computer. It should be easy since there is almost nothing on there at the moment. It is a new install.
The disk utility tells me that I have now an extra 50Go of space used, so it must have been transferred...
    Any idea?
    Thanks

I found my data in the shared folder. Not all of it was there and in the end a nice lady from Apple told me to start again from the beginning and delete the mess the import program created
I am still a bit confused over the red circles but make sure you are in the right account when trying to see the data as I dont think even as admin I could see the main user account (I had 5 for the family).
There is a button under the get info tab that can change some of the permissions
    Frustrating isnt it

  • Used migration assistant but can't find my stuff

I recently purchased a new iMac 21.5 inch screen.  I ran the Setup Assistant and then later ran the Migration Assistant.  I migrated my files on the old computer (2006 iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8) first using an ethernet cable between the two computers, and then second using Time Machine.  I followed all of the instructions but now can find my migrated files.  They don't show up on my new iMac running Mavericks.  Help!!!

If you used Migration Assistant it creates a second user account. Log out of your user account and log back into the new account and you will find your data.

  • Just used Migration Assistant but spotlight won't index files on new iMac computer.

I just used Migration Assistant to move files from my old 2008 Mac Pro to a new 2013 iMac 27" both Intel based. Files and applications all moved over fine and I can access them in Finder but Spotlight won't index the files. Should I be reindexing something or do I need to do somethign for spotlight to recognize the new filez I migrated?
    Thanks!

You can force a Spotlight index, just let it run and your migration should be just fine. Instructions are in:
Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes located at: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409

  • HT5097 How do I find my files after a TC restore using Migration Assistant?

How do I find my TC backup?
My difficulties started with my MacBook Pro going totally dead.  Took it to the Apple Store, where they identified a problem with the RAM.  They fixed it, and also reinstalled Lion, but without my applications - Pages, iPhoto, my documents etc.
When I got back home, I used Migration Assistant, which I found in Utilities, connected to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, and it said at the end that it had transferred all my info.  During the process I had to create another ID.   I added a "1" to my old id, of course...easiest thing to do....and then I changed the Login procedure so I could switch to that user ID.  I'm not sure that worked, because when my MacBook Pro went to sleep, I found the original icon, rather than the one for the name1 name.  So that may be part of the problem, but I don't know.
Anyway, then I entered Time Machine, but all that is there is the last few days/hours of activity.
I don't know much about computers, but I think that the new name1 user ID and the restored data may be linked somewhere and if I could just find it perhaps this would get resolved.
I can see the applications now, but when I look for, for example, Pages documents, there is nothing there.  Ditto for iPhoto.  For iPhoto I also tried file>import, which brought in some old files from MobileMe, but not the photos I had on my MacBook.
I would prefer not to have the name/name1 and just have everything back as it was, but I don't know how to do that either.
Hope someone can help me!  Many thanks!!!

Never mind!  I finally figured out - duh - that if I logged out and then logged in under the new name1 ID, I could find everything!  HOOORAY!

  • I have used migration assistant but new profile is created, how do i merge into one

I have recently purchased Mac book and have used migration assistant to transfer files from my old windows PC.
Due to some issues when using migration tool i had to transfer in segments, each time i did this a new user was created.
I have asked for  some help and was advised that users cannot be merged however the files can be shared via dropbox.
I have received instructions as to how to do this but am stuck as once I get to the point of dropbox, I do not know what step to take next to add files into dropbox?.
    Below are instructions
Pick a User Account your going to keep, make sure it's a Admin account and if need to, log into another Admin account and make it so in System Preferences > accounts.
One logs out of their current account by using the Apple menu > Log out.
Next while in one of the accounts your later planing on removing, go to the Finder > Go > Computer and window opens.
Open  the MacintoshHD partition, then the Users folder and the User Account  you plan to keep, then the Public folder and then locate the DropBox  folder for that User. Any files placed in there will change permissions  and be accessible to that user when you log into it.

The Dropbox folder is a subfolder of the home folder, which has the same name as the user account. It's under the Users folder at the top level of the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.)

  • Will windows os under parallels migrate to new mac using migration assistant

I have been using parallels 7 with windows 7 on a 2008 macbook pro. I have gotten a new 2012 macbook pro and plan to use migration assistant. Will windows install without my having to call Microsoft? I also have Office 2010 and wonder if I need to call Microsoft to allow me to use it on the new MacBook?
I have made a clone of my older computer. I have done Time Machine also

Migration Assistant only migrates - it does not delete anything from the 'other' machine.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Used migration assistant but now new software is gone

OOk, after a somewhat nightmarish experience of trying to transfer my data and applications from my old MacBook pro to my new macbook air, by wiping the MacBook Air clean and using migration assistant, I've discovered that the new version of pages, presentation and imessage etc are all missing. Is there a way to get them back?! I rather liked the new version of pages.

What exactly do you mean by "my profile"? Your user account may or may not show up in various places but if it exists it should have a home folder visible in the root level "Users" folder, identified by its short account name. Even if you log into your wife's account, you should be able to see this folder (although you won't necessarily be able to open most of its enclosed folder).
For example, if your user account was named "jay" on your G4, you should see a folder of that name in the Users folder.

  • Migration Assistant created multiple users.  After receiving my new MacBook Pro and seeing that Migration Assistant would take 40  hrs to transfer my data from my PC, I decided to do it incrementally - now my info is under 3 different users.  Ideas?

First time Mac User.  Just got my MacBook Pro 2 days ago.  Uppon setup, I founf that Migration Assistant would take more than 40 hours to transfer my data from my PC.  Thinking that I was taking a smart approach, I decided to break the transfer into smaller parts performing them when the PC was not needed.  What I've ended up doing was migrating my data into 3 diferent user's on the Mac.  So now I have an extensive iTunes library and contacts under one user, all of "my documents" under another user, and all of my pictures under a 3rd user.  Anyone know how to get all my data over to one user and then get rid of the other user names?

Erase the drive, reinstall Mountain Lion, migrate using Setup Assistant.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
To restore wait until the installation is completed and the computer restarts. You should restart to the Setup Assistant where you'll be given an opportunity to restore directly from your Time Machine backup. Be patient since the restore will take so long. If your backup drive can run on FireWire instead of USB then use FireWire instead. It will cut that time down substantially.

  • Discrepancy between old/new mac using migration assistant

Replaced G4 Powerbook with new Macbook Pro. G4 was saying disk was full (80 Gb), Migration assistant showed it was copying only 41 Gb of contents. What did the other 39 Gb consist of? A mystery to me! Can this all be system files?

There are many things that are not copied by Migration Assistant such as swap and Trash.
Is it possible you have significant amounts of data in Trash?
