I can't get past the Apple sign

I have spent about an hour reading the various posts on this site. I am hoping that I'm not going to have to do what I think I'm going to have to do.
I'm on my third iPod, but my first 5th Generation. I was running yesterday when it froze in the middle of the song for absolutely no reason. When I reset it, I had my menu, but I immediately turned it off again because I was so worried something was wrong. I wanted to get home.
I charged it overnight. When I try to use it today, this is precisely what happens: the dim Apple sign comes up, and then the backlight lights up, and then it makes that horrible clicking noise. I don't have a sad apple or an exclamation point (I've had those before and am well-versed in what follows).
I know I'm probably going to have to restore and lose all my playlists. I have all my songs backed up on CD-ROMs, but the thought of uploading the 3000 songs all over again and recreating the playlists is making me sick to my stomach.
Just a note: I've only had this iPod for 6 months. I had the latest updater. What concerns me is that if I restore, and it works again, what's to keep this from happening again six more months down the road?
I love iPod but I'm becoming very frustrated with the quality as they have become more popular.

  • Can't get past the Apple screen

Hi. My Powerbook froze - its memory is nearly full. But when I restarted, the grey screen comes up, with the Apple logo, and nothing else happens. It's critical that I get this working, and I really appreciate any help.
    Thanks, Ol

Hi, olparker. You're probably confusing memory (RAM), which is emptied whenever you restart the computer, with hard drive storage space, which isn't, and which is almost certainly what you have too little of. If your PB and the data on it are important to you, then presumably you've backed up all your data on other media. If that's the case, what you need to do now is get access to the files on the Powerbook's hard drive and delete some of them. If your data isn't backed up anywhere else, you may have to decide to give some of it up permanently.
The operating system on the hard drive needs a certain amount of free space on the drive for its own use. Without that amount of free space, it can't run, and that's probably why your Powerbook doesn't start up now. You'll need to start up from some other suitable disk or volume that gives you access to the Finder.
If you have a bootable clone of your internal drive on an external FireWire drive (the most convenient and useful form of backup), simply start the Powerbook from that drive, and use the Finder to trash files from the internal drive and empty the Trash. If you don't have a bootable clone, but you do have access to another Mac with a Firewire port, connect the Powerbook to it in Target Disk Mode and use the host Mac's Finder to delete files from the Powerbook's drive.
Throw away 2-5GB of files, but start out by trashing just a few items at a time and emptying the trash after every few files. Paradoxically, it takes free space even to empty the Trash, and loading the Trash up with too many files before emptying it may make it impossible to empty.
Choose large files to remove. Movies, music, and photos are often the largest files stored on a computer, apart from a few very large applications (notably iDVD). If there are large applications on your hard drive that you could easily reinstall from original source discs, those are good candidates for removal too.
If you can't comfortably reduce the amount of stuff on your drive to create 5GB of free space and maintain it indefinitely, you need a larger internal hard drive in the Powerbook ASAP. 5GB of free space is the smallest amount you should plan to maintain at all times. You can make do with a smaller amount (2-3GB) as a very short-term expedient, say for a week or two, but doing something as simple as burning a CD (never mind a DVD) under those conditions could easily put you right back where you are now, with a nonfunctional PB. With any drive of 60GB or larger, aim to maintain 10% of it as free space at all times.

  • Can't get past the Apple Logo when starting my MBP

    Hi,
I recently tried to install a new programm on my macbookpro with mac os x. The installation was successful, but the computer restarted afterwards, and hasn't been able to turn back on since. I always hear the startup sound and see the apple logo with the little circle that rotates, but then nothing else happens. I have tried to use the "c" button to set it up again, but it doesnt work.
Does anybody have any ideas how I could fix it?
    thanks a lot
    raphael

Raphael, what kind of installation, an Archive and Install, an Erase and Install or was it the usual Upgrade (without Options)?
Try starting in the Single users mode (S key down) or a Safe Boot (Shift key down) and see if either works.

  • I tried to master reset my I pod touch, now all I have is a apple skull with a flame on its head I am trying to sync and I can not get past the apple with a flame

I bought my daughter an I pod touch 3 gen. I tried to do a master reset so I could sync it with my Itunes account. After resetting, all that is showing is an apple that looks like a skull with a flame on top. Does anyone know what I am supposed to do so I can sync it?

Master reset...? Your device was jailbroken prior to you purchasing the device. The only symbol you should see on reboot is an Apple symbol. Download redsnow... google it! Download the latest version and your IPSW (ipod restore firmware) it has to be the correct version. And the "just boot tethered" should fix your device.
But that's only if you didnt back the device up. If you don't care about any of the data on the ipod then you can simply open itunes navigate to the device and click the restore button. This will restore the ipod firmware and install a fresh copy. Good luck let me know if you have any problems.

  • I tried to update my ipod, but it now it is not going past the apple sign.

I tried to update my ipod. but now its stuck.
if you turn it on, you can´t get past the apple sign.
I tried to restore it with itunes, but it says it can not restore.
because you have to get the latest version of itunes.
but I already have the latest version, so I can not restore.
please help, because I can not do anything with it now..

    - On your computer go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and see if a backup is listed.
    - For iCloud backup. , with the iPod setup with the same iCloud account go to Settings>iCloud>Storage and Backup>Manage Storage and see if one is listed.

  • HT202649 Hello, I just bought a used iPhone 4S but can't get past the ID to continue set up. I went to iforgot as requested to reset my password to my existing account. Still can't get past the ID.

    Hello,
I am having setup issues with a used 4S iphone. I can't get past the Apple ID step.
First it said it was an existing ID and I should go to iforgot and reset my password.
I did, but still keep getting the error message.
Then I entered the serial number online support and it said the ID was another account. Would that be the seller?
Do I need to get them to unregister under their name before I can proceed? Or...
Please help. I start  new job on Monday that required me to have a smartphone. I need it up and running.
    Thank you
    R

Yes, you have encountered Activation Lock (Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support). The only way that phone will ever be usable is if the owner the phone is locked to releases it (see: Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a device from a previous owner’s account - Apple Support). If you are lucky the phone is locked to the seller, so you can ask them to unlock it. If the seller is merely a middleman and the previous owner is not the seller it gets much more complicated. It's even possible that you bought a stolen phone, in which case you will never be able to use it and you should return it for a refund.

My newly updated iPad 2 wants an email for the apple ID.  My apple ID is not an email address.  How can I get past the set-up screen?
I can't change my Apple ID.  It would mess all my stuff up.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone (if you're using iOS 7), then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • I verified my email, then went to sign in and I can not get past the Sign In.

I need some help. I made an account and verified my email. I then went to sign-in and a box pops up saying I need to review my account. I go back to review it and it takes me to the support page. In other words... I can not get past the Sign In.

Thanks, Andrew for your help.  Not sure if you will see this, but I did the above and it said the HD was okay.  Rebooted it and still won't go past login page.  Tried it again and this time typed in the line /sbin/fsck -fy and then it came up and said HD was okay, but said something about being modified.  I once more rebooted, but it still won't get past the login screen.  Besides taking long to reboot, as before, I am able to enter my password, but then it hangs up with the rainbow icon rotating continuously.  Does this mean that the disk is corrupt or partially so, and if so, can you advise how I should proceed?  TIA again.

  • I created an allowance for my daughter but can't get past the edit Apple ID details. I get Your information could not be saved at this time.

I had to create an account for her because she is underage but I can't get past the edit Apple ID details page. I have confirmed the email address and was able to set up some of the services on the iPod but can't finish setting up the account.

I'm experiencing the very same thing.  I assumed that the site was down, but it looks like there are multitudes of complaints about this.  What's up Apple?  I can't seem to find an answer to this online...  Thanks!

  • My MacBook Air can't get past the gray screen with the apple logo. What's the fix?

My MacBook Air can't get past the gray screen with the Apple logo, so I can't login. Does anyone know the fix for this?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Before reconnecting an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode.* The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Post for further instructions.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see above for instructions.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it produces. Look for the line "Permissions repaired successfully" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

    Try:

    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Claudius, either you didn't read my post, or you jumped to conclusions. I had a skype account that was created using a microsoft account (NOT THE ACCOUNT I AM USING NOW). PURE MICROSOFT ACCOUNT NO OTHER ACCOUNT LINKING.I had to change the primary mail of that account.I was told "no can do" by skype support.I found that if I went to account settings and clicked on the link on the line below the one that said "MICROSOFT etc" (labeled something along the lines of "TV or Device") I got the opportunity to set the password of the "live:username" account (WHICH YOU COINCIDENTALLY HAVE TO DO IF YOU WANT TO USE SMART TVs ETC).Once that was done, I COULD SUCCESSFULLY DO WHAT SKYPE SUPPORT SAID WAS IMPOSSIBLE- I could change the primary mail address. once that was done, and NOT BEFORE, I linked the account to a facebook account as well, just to be sure I have more than one way to access the skype account. What caused you to get the impression that I was writing something else? furthermore this sentence - "The solution you described in your initial message isn't actually once since all the time you were operating on different account that weren't actually linked" does not make sense, I think you mis-edited it.and I need to point out that you are incorrect. I WAS NOT OPERATING ON DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS I WAS OPERATING ON ONE SKYPE ACCOUNT, THAT WAS CREATED USING A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT just like you say you recommend. I still don't know how you can misread my initial entry like that.  If you have a better solution to my initial problem - changing the primary mail of a skype account created throuth either a microsoft account or a facebook account, Please write a sticky to explain how to do it, and please inform skype support that Yes it can be done, and this is the way it is done. So far my "lucky shot" seems to be the only way to do it.
