I can't get sound to come out of my TV when hooked up to my computer?

Hi there- I have been trying to watch movies from my computer on my TV (a Samsung), but I'm having problems getting any sound. I am currently running on OS X 10.5.8 on a 2008 Macbook. I originially tried using an HDMI cord and have had no problems getting an image onto my TV, but I wasn't getting any sound and was told the cord was for both audio and visual capabilities. So my next attempt to get sound was to use an RCA to auxillery adapter to my computer, but I'm still not getting any sound. When I go into my sound preferences and see if I can change the output to the TV, my only option availiable is the internal speakers on my computer.
I'm thinking that because I have both the HDMI and aux plugged in, my TV is only trying to read the HDMI cord and not recognizing the RCA input, but I could be completely off. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for your help!

As far as I know, 2008 Macbooks do not send audio over HDMI. HDMI on these models are Video only.
Also, many TVs do not accept RCA input when there is a HDMI video signal. Some TV's have options to use HDMI and an alternate audio input at the same time. My Philips TV can accept HDMI video and a separate audio in at the same time via a headphone-jack type input. However my TV cannot mix any RCA input with HDMI.
I have sucessfully used my 2006 Macbook on my HDTV using HDMI for video and headphone-jack-input for audio, so it is definitely possible. You just need your TV to play nice.

  • I need help getting sound to come out of my TV when using HDMI. Any solutions?

I'm able to pull up my picture when connecting my HDMI cable to my Macbook pro...however I can't get the sound to come out of my Toshiba TV.  When I go under system preferences, then sound and select my Toshiba TV as an option.  It says it has no output controls.  I fiddled with my sound setting in my TV and stil no luck.   Does anyone know any solutions for this problem.  Help is greatly appreciated.

    Hey jbarwins
Check to make sure that you are up to date on your computer. Another recommendation would be to try a different cable and also reset the NVRAM on your computer.

  • Can't get sound to come out of speakers; new to Logic

Just installed Logic Studio on my new Mac tower intel machine. Have Bose companion speakers plugged into Mac. iTunes etc comes out just fine, but nothing from Logic; Logic comes from the towers tiny internal speaker.
    Help?

Go to the audio hardware preferences, and select which audio interface you want Logic to use.
I strongly recommend getting started with the Getting Started manual, which walks you through all the basic setup stuff.

  • Why does sound only come out of 1 speaker when I dock my iPod?

My son's Ipod only plays sound out of I speaker. When I dock the ipod on his ihome radio or my sony radio, sound only comes out of the left speaker. When I put other ipods on the same docks i get sound out of both speakers. It is just this one ipod that won't produce sound out of both speakers, no matter what docking station I use.

Likely it is a hardware issue for the iPod, you need to bring it for service

  • Can't get sound to play back on Movie Maker when recording with internal webcam/microphone

I have a Windows 8, 64-bit  Envy notebook.   I tried using Google Hangouts but there wasn't any sound (the camera was fine).
Later, I decided to test the  internal microphone myself by  creating a Movie Maker file,  and clicking on Webcam and making a recording.  The camera worked but it played back in total silence.
I checked the settings for the microphone and the internal mic was properly set as the default.  I turned up the volume to the maximum.   Then I found directions for doing a sound check, and I was able to do the Sound Recording check and get audio when I played the file back.
But when I tried again to make a video,  i got zero in the playback.
    Any idea what's going wrong?
    Thanks,
    Pat

    Hello Myerspat,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I have read your post on how you are not able to get sound from your notebook computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To restore the audio to your notebook, I recommend following this document on No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8). This should help with the playback on your system.
In addition, you can also follow @SuperMario1's thread on Troubleshooting Guide: Audio does not Work after a Certain Period of Time. This guide should help with your notebook's audio output in regards to a recent Windows Update.
For more assistance, I will need to know:
The Product and Model Number of your notebook computer.
If your computer has completed all of its important Windows Updates.
If you have updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant.
If this is an on-going, or recent issue.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

  • Have a 2 year old ipad2 and while speakers work fine I can no longer get sound through headphones, how can I get sound through the headphones?

I have a two year old ipad2 and while the speakers work ok I can no longer get any sound through the headphones? If any one has any suggestions on how I can get sound to come out of the headphones I would be grateful.

System Preferences --> Sound --> uncheck the mute button next to the Output volume (assuming it is set).  Or move the Output volume slider.

I have a iPad and I connect it to my tv through hdmi but would like the sound to come out through the headphone socket, can I make this happen.

Go to System Preferences>Sound>Output  and make sure that you selected the right output. I think if yo use HDMI you might not be abe to select another output.

How do I get the sound to come out of external speakers?

Thanks for our reply.  My speakers are powered Bose speakers but still didn't pick up the sound until I tried this suggestion from another discussion thread.  This worked like a charm:
Re: External speakers don't work created by ally100 in MacBook Pro -View the full discussion
I had a similar problem a while back. The issue was with the speaker jack plug and the macbook phone socket. For some reason the jack plug was not a good a fit, as say the jack that comes with the iphone ear phones. A few tiwsts and turns of the speaker jack plug and it eventually became a snug(ish) fit. Have a look on you tune. There are a couple of videos on there that might help if this is not the issue.

  • TS2634 I bought a ipad back in December and the ear buds never worked.  The sound doesnt come out of what you put in your ear but comes out of the little hole on the outside of the ear buds.  Is this supposed to be this way?

The earbuds that came with my ipad have never worked.  They have sound that comes out of the outside hole of the earbuds.  When you put them in your ears no sound can be heard.  Has this been a problem or did mine just come broken?

I have the same problem and it has just started in the last day or so...
Got the phone late July and then in the last day, everytime I plug into PC or take a photo,  I get the same "Disk Error / Retry message"
What is interesting is that I always had the Photo Storage location as the Memory Card (detachable).   Seems odd that sometime in the last month or so the phone decided to change my setting to the Mass Memory. Might have been an firmware update that I have done in the past but not sure.
Changing the Photo Storage Location back to the Memory Card has stopped the error coming up everytime a Photo wastaken, but the message continues when I plug in the phone to the PC.
Phone was just updated to latest firmware this morning and that has not helped, although during the back-up process I could not save some files from the Mass Memory.
I wonder if Optus will shout a new phone because their technicians are useless with past experiences and to be honest the N97 really promises so much but offers very little compared to all of my last Nokia's.

  • Can't get sound from many websites.

I can't get sound on my PowerMac from MANY websites (such as Hallmark.com, YouTube, some blogs, etc.). Yet I'm able to get sound on those same sites on my iBook. The PowerMac has no sound problems on other websites or in iTune function, sound effects, output or input. Anyone out there experience a similar problem or have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Thanks.

Hi, why wouldn't you suspect the earbuds, since if I'm reading this correctly, they don't work with different software, or any of your devices?
On the Mac Pro, Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • Can't get sound from Insignia BT headphones w/ BT-equipped dv3t

Both are brand-new, I charged the headphones and downloaded the updated drivers from www.broadcom.com (actually Vista seemed to do it automatically) and the device is paired but I can't get any sound out of it (it's turned on:-)).
Under the Playback tab in the Sound control panel there are three items:
    Speakers: Bluetooth Hands-free Audio
Speakers and Headphones: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Independent Headphones: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
All say they are working, but when I test the sound of each one I only get sound from the notebook speakers using the second option. The only weird thing I can think of is that I had the USB adapter plugged in when I downloaded the drivers, so maybe it downloaded drivers designed to work through USB? (I can't get sound with the adapter plugged in, though, either).
Any suggestions welcome, I really want to get this to work and not have to send the headphones back to seller (which is what Insignia tech support told me to do).
P.S. I know I have BT turned on because I'm also connected to a wireless home network, they go together.

    Hello again,
oops, I must have missed your last message... sorry for that!
I have to say, that I don t have my digital sound system that long, that I can answer this question for sure. However...
You re right, that it should be possible, although I wasn t able to find a way to do that... yet... Somewhere (don t know if it was this forum or another place) I ve read, that the SPDIF support for Windows Vista isn t that nice at this time... perhaps a new driver will solve this
Furthermore... I don t use the Media Center that much. So I don t even know if there is any option to set the output device (within the application Media Center). That would be important to realize "the best of both worlds". Explanation: If you want headphones support, you (always) have to leave the Speakers device as default. Other applications (such as Winamp,...) allow us to set the output device (in Winamp for example you can set it under the preferences Output -> Directsound device) to the SPDIF device, although we have selected "Speakers" as default in the control panel... nice, isn t it's For sure... if it would work...
That way you don t get a(n) AC3/DTS signal via SPDIF... so, if you use Windows Vista (I can't answer your question related to other operating systems, because of my newly purchased system -> I haven t used it on XP) the only way that I know ( til now) is to select the SPDIF device as default...

    hey webazoid,
i would suggest contacting the manufacturer of that device and at the same time, have you tested it out on a different machine? Does it work ?
