Please HELP! i cannot open any Adobe PDF files anymore. i DL the new version XI and since no files have opened - so i recently uninstalled it and re-installed adobe reader 9 but i am having the same problem - no pdf files open and its really causing a problem as i can not open any work documents. please help

Three things to try (Reader XI)...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

I own CS6 -  why is it asking me to sign up for a trial copy?  I cannot open any of my files.

Have you purchased the CS6 with a perpetual license? Or do you have a Creative Cloud subscription?
If you had the former, you'd have a serial number. If the latter, you'd use your Adobe ID to login to your subscription.

  • Cannot open any au.dmg file. "There is no default app. to open the doc."

I cannot open these free audio plugins. What application should I use to open these AU.dmg files?
    ex: http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=1

Are you referring to this specific file?
    http://www.smartelectronix.com/refer.php?url=~bram/adrian/SupaPhaser_au.dmg.gz
The rest are all .sit files which are Stuffit compressed and require Stuffit Expander or The Unarchiver or something similar to open.
.gz is gzip compression and should already be on your computer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gzip
This will decompress to a .dmg file which is a standard OSX image file and should open with DiskImageMoutner in /System/Library/CoreServices
.au is an audio format which is somewhat archaic now I believe. I haven't encountered a file in that format in many years. Presumably the software package you are using will open it. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aufileformat]
While Pacifist will open .dmg you should already have DiskImageMounter on your computer as part of the basic package. I start to get worried when something like that is missing because who knows what else may be missing and why? Perhaps early stages of directory problems?

  • Cannot open any Internet Explorer  files

Here's the other question. ( I have Tiger. I still have OS 9 with Classic. )
    2) when I click on a file in Mac Intosh HD that was created under OS 9, with Internet Explorer 5.1.6, a file with the IE logo (the letter e + a globe), I see now a message saying:
"An error occured loading the "MS Internet Library (PPC)" library. Re-installing should solve the problem".
How do I do that ?
I tried to trash MS Internet Library (not PPC- I didn't see that) and restart but that didn't help, so I put it back. (That's why I didn't empty the trash.)
If I actually see a thumbnail photo, I can open that without problems.

Well, this has unexpectely been resolved.
I checked on the link you gave (just the first one) but after seing all the negative reviews about IE 5.1.7 and remembering my own bad experience with it (I upgraded to 517 about a year ago and it was worse than 516, nothing but problems so I trashed it and went back to 516) I decided to try to re-install 516 since I have the application. Well I just click on IE 516 and it opened to the Apple page. (why I don't know)
I didn't install or re-install , nothing ! I just click and voila ! So I try other pages (yahoo, etc and everything is working).
Then (and this is where I had the problem before, I could not open them ) I went to my HD to try to open a file done with IE and to my surprise it just opened without problems!
So is that the answer ? I need to OPEN Internet Explorer before being able to see any documents done with IE ?
It doesn't really surprise me :
With OS 9 when I click on the Yahoo Check mail (I have an account with Yahoo) even if I'm not on line, the computer will start going on the internet, it will dial, etc and open the page.
But I did notice with OS X that when I click on Check mail it tells me "You are not connected ". I must first click "Connect" then when I'm on, I must click "go back page" because what I see is the "You are not connected " page (so it won't even bring me there even if I clicked on Check mail 30 seconds ago). That is not an improvement.
Is that with everything ? I must open before I can use ?

  • Cannot open any inDesign CS4 files, "import failed"

Suddenly inDesign CS4 will no longer open anything. When I attempt to open inDesign files it says "import failed". I have trashed my preferences and tried checking "show import options" to no avail. I can create a new document but not open documents. I am on a 2007 iMac running Lion. Any ideas?
    Thank you.

Maybe. Trash your prefs again using the directions at Replace Your Preferences and then delete the additional files joun listed at Adobe Forums: InDesign crashes at startup

  • I apparently got stung with the Adobe flash virus.  Now I cannot open any .pdf files from the internet.

I apparently got stung with the Adobe flash virus and now I cannot open any Adobe .pdf files from the internet.  Fix?

Go to F_Secure's Flashback Removal Tool web page, download their Flashback trojan detection/removal tool, and follow the instructions you find there.
Also install the latest java update which also tries to remove these trojans.
Java for OS X Lion 2012-003
And only download the adobe flash plugin from the adobe site.
    Update:
Just because you cannot download pdf may not be an indication of the trojan.  There's been a number of reports about problems like that with pdf's.  Look at the More Like This section on the right side of this page.

Recently I had to install windows 7 in my notebook because XP doesn't have more support. Before installing I backed up all my files to my external HD. If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • Safari cannot open any file - online or local

    Hi Everyone,
I'm struggling with this issue: Safari cannot open anything. It can't open any website. It can't even open any local HTML files. When I put something in the location bar and hit enter, I get about a half inch of blue progress bar and then....nothing. Safari just stops. No error. Not even an attempt to do something. It just sits there. All the other functionality not involved with displaying HTML files works fine. I can change preferences and show the Develop menu. I just can't use the application for anything.
Catch 1: Firefox, Chrome, Opera, iTunes, every other app installed on my Mac works fine and can access the net. With one exception...
Catch 2: The App Store doesn't work either. I can't sign in. When I create a new account, I can't download any apps. (I get a "We could not complete your purchase. Unknown Error.") Nor can I sign out. I read that webkit is the same under the hood for both Safari and The App Store so maybe they are related.
    Here's what I have tried:
    - Deleting, re-downloading, and reinstalling Safari.
    - Deleting .plists from Preferences and Safari folders in my Library.
    - Checking Proxies settings (none set)
    - Removing third party virus software (Didn't have any. I don't have FruitMenu or Application Enhancer either)
    - No parental controls are set
    - I've tried a whole bunch of other suggestions, from deleting com.apple.whatever files to repairing permissions, to resetting account permissions.
I'm using OS 10.7.5 and Safari 6. Firefox 15.0.1 and Chrome 22.0.1229.94 are fine. I have a separate MacBook pro with the same proxy settings and Safari settings that works just fine.
Please send help. I know it's something simple. I just want to find it so I can punch it in the face.

Did you log out after moving com.apple.LaunchServices.plist?
If you did, proceed as below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • I downloaded Redear to see if it could open an old .pdf file.  Now I cannot open any .pdf files.

What is wrong with Reader?  Having loaded it I now cannot open any .pdf file in my computer or on email.

Cannot get over the impression that the fault is deliberate.  Building in the requirement for all users then loading a weak link, that drives you to purchase.
Shockwave is FREE... Flash Player is FREE.... Adobe Reader is FREE... Adobe AIR is FREE... Those four products are, and always have been, FREE... Flash Professional, which is for creating and editing Flash animation and video files, is a paid licensed product. Acrobat Professional, which is for creating and editing PDFs, is a paid licensed product. Neither Flash Player nor Adobe Reader have any links to prompt an upgrade to the professional version of software for the file format. Never have. Viewing Flash content and PDFs needs to be universally available to the public who receive such content over the Internet. Creating and editing Flash files and PDFs is not something that everyone needs, so it's only available at a cost for those who need it and choose to use Flash Pro or Acrobat.
There are Creative suites with several Adobe applications for everything from photo and graphic editing, to video editing, to making e-readers, to web design, but those are for developers of the individual media.

Thank you for responding.  Here is what I get.

This may come from a new software I just installed. Is that possible? I

  • Cannot open any photos/movies in Entourage, message comes up saying 'folder cannot be found'. Last week I deleted lots of old documents/downlods and fear that I have accidentally deleted file that opens photos/movies.....any suggestions???

I cannot open any photos/movies in Entourage, message comes up saying 'folder cannot be found'. Last week I deleted lots of old documents/downloads and fear that I have accidentally deleted what is needed to open photos/movies.  Any suggestions please? Should re-install the whole Office:mac program, and is it easy to do this without disturbing what I have on my computer?

When you password-protected these folders then you did so to prevent anyone from accessing the pictures unless he had the correct password, even if he deleted the password application itself. Are you now asking how to get around this protection? If you
selected a robust protection scheme then you probably got what you wanted: uncrackable encryption. You need to check the FAQs of this application and/or google for clues. Alternatively you could restore your files from your external backup medium (if you have
    one . . .).

  • I cannot open any pdf files in Safari on my Mac Book

I cannot open any pdf-files using Safari anymore. Does anybody know what is going on?
    Thank´s a lot!

    Found the solution online!
An easy way to locate a file is to open the Finder. From the menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this in exactly as you see it here >     /Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you see the PDF Browser plugin, move it to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari to test.
