I did a fresh install on my computer, but when I tried to sync, it put the new bookmarks (standard firefox ones) onto the sync data instead. Is there any way to recover my bookmarks?

I can't pull them off my old install since it was erased.
Lets hope that you did not really erase your old profile, you would have had to go a little out of your way to do that. I've never used Sync but you have to have something to Sync to.
Use the following to see if you have more than one profile or your lost bookmarks
in the bookmarkbackups folder.
Type about:support into the location bar the click on "Open Containing Folder" that will take you to your current profile. The bookmarkbackups folder has 5 backups (.json files) any of which can be restored with Firefox up through restore bookmarks.
It doesn't sound like the install pulled in your old bookmarks, so continuing ...
Sounds like you created a new profile instead of using your existing profile.
Open your profile folder and go up one level to see if you have multiple
profiles ...
HELP (Alt+H) --> Troubleshooting information... --> "Open Containing Folder"
(or type about:support into the location bar then click on "Open Containing Folder")
note the filename, then go up one level to see if you have additional profile folders.
Check the dates of places.sqlite (new in Fx3) for update date just before you went to Fx4.
Since it is updated each time you close your session that would be a good place to check.
If you find one then note its filename (the profile name is part of the filename) and
then start the Firefox Profile Manager and open with that profile.
To prevent the problem in the future don't let Firefox start up for you after
downloading and installing a new version. Instead exit the install at that
last point, and restart Firefox in your normal manner.
If you really do want to start with a new profile like the one you have, them look in the bookmarkbackups folder of the other profiles and look particularly at the dates and the size of the .json files to find one that you can restore to your current profile -- restoring is complete replacement of what you have for bookmarks.

On Jun 19 my pc wouldn't load Windows & HP decided to do a system recovery on my pc on Jun 20.
Prior to the system recovery being performed all of my files & programs were burned onto discs.
A few days after the recovery was performed I re-installed Firefox. It was the same day that the newest version of Firefox was released. I was unable to reload the version I was previously using (I believe that it was version 4).
After re-installing Firefox I discovered that I lost all of my Firefox bookmarks.
I thought that the bookmarks would be on the back-up discs but I can't find them on the system recovery files that I loaded onto my pc.
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a HP G60 series laptop.Thanks for the info.
I did find the folder as described above. Under Profiles the sub-directory I found was: t6jyvmtf.default
There are 2 files in that sub-directory:
blocklist - which is an XML document &
bookmarks - which is Firefox document
When I selected bookmarks the document that opened does not contain (to my knowledge) the bookmarks.
The heading for the page is '''''Bookmarks''''' & right underneath that heading is '''Get Bookmark Add-ons'''
Underneath that is a heading '''Bookmarks Toolbar Folder''' with the following under it:

I checked each of the items that could be selected but none of them had my bookmarks.
I also checked the blocklist XML document - it opened Windows Internet Explorer with what appears to be programming language (although I could be wrong). At the top of the document it says - ?xml version="1.0" ?
followed by
- <blocklist xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2006/addons-blocklist">
Should I be selecting one of the above to find the bookmarks & I'm just not seeing it? -
I have been trouble having trouble with my browser and actually had to get to the Firefox web site by going through Safari since my shortcut was not getting me there. i saw that there was an upgrade to 7.0.1 so i downloaded it, installed it, and now i can't get in to any web sites through firefox at all. by browser says it can't find it. when it was installed, it was save to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
The problem is with desktop shortcuts or links in external programs?
First, turn off Firefox's setting to check whether it is the default. This is in the Advanced Options as described in this article: [[Advanced settings for accessibility, browsing, system defaults, network, updates, and encryption]].
Next, go to your preferred browser, and use its internal feature to have it make itself your default browser. I have cs4 installed on my old computer, i have since lost the disk and serial #s. Is there any way to recover this information and install the programs on my new computer? I used my old computer for college and haven't used it in awhile, now I have a job that can benefit from having those programs. Due to recurring problems with Windows 8, I had to "refresh" my laptop. As a result, my computer was reset to its factory settings, and Mozilla Firefox was stripped out. I have lost my bookmarks, browser history, and cookies.
Is this lost information still present somewhere on my computer's hard drive? (I did get a list of removed apps afterwards.) Is there any way to recover and restore my bookmarks, at the very least?

I had the same exact thing happen to me - except it was my wireless keyboard that disabled my ipad. I also have documents on Pages that I did not want t to lose. This worked for me! Found it on another help site....I was able reactivate my ipad - nothing lost - all is good!
1. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
2. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
3. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
4. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
5. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
6. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
7. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm. -
When my wife's Mac Book Pro was being updated to the latest version of OS X the laptop locked up at a grey screen with the Apple icon and status bar. Did the restore complete?
If you backed up the phone to either computer or to the cloud you should be able to retrieve them. If the restore is done, try retrieving info from the iCloud. If the restore did not complete, when you do the restore, at the end you can restore from previous backup. -

It's probably too late to mention this, but the bookmarks could likely be retrieved if you had a recent backup of your Mac's files. (Of course, any sites bookmarked after that backup wouldn't be in the backup.) You would just need to retrieve the bookmarks.html file from the backup.
If you don't regularly or often backup, and this and other things like this are common enough to warrant it, it might be worth considering at least a very simple daily or weekly backup of user files, maybe just some important Application Support folders and the Documents folder, for example. (I do a daily incremental backup of a subset of work files to CDs, using the Backup program Apple includes with .Mac, because someone I work with is apt to mess up some of the online files we both work on. ;-)) -

In order to recover something that info has to exist. Where is it? Tell us where your data is backed up and you will get your answer. Places where your contacts can be recovered from: Facebook app, emails like gmail or yahoo, windows contacts, Mac contacts/address book, outlook, exchange, iCloud backup, iCloud synced contacts(that one is unlikely, or you wouldn't be here), iTunes backup.
