I dont understand the file.encoding parameter

Im running Windows Vista and using Intellij Jetbrans.
I have a file with the name divisionǿ (In case not displayed this is unicode charcter \u01ff) the filename displays fine on In Windows Explorer, and fine within my programs gui, but on StandardOut File.getName() returns it as division?
Why does it show the question mark, when it can display it ok in a Jtable within the program.
Also, jetbrains runs with -Dfile.encoding=windows-1252, ( i didnt set this myself). What does this option actually refer to:
The format that java text files files are encoded in
The format filenames are encoded in
or something else
This isnt just an academic question, it is causing a problem when creating a file and trying to create a script, because it is putting the line with the ? rather than the real charcter in it.
thanks for any help Paul

paultaylor wrote:
The format that java text files files are encoded inThat's the one, but it's much more than that. Any time your program converts bytes to chars or vice versa, it will use the system default encoding unless you specify something else.
The default encoding on a Windows machine is windows-1252 (or 125-something else, for other locales), and it doesn't support the ǿ character. If you really want to use that character, you should either use Unicode escapes (e.g., \u01ff), or save your source files as UTF-8. If you do save it as UTF-8, you'll also have to specify the encoding when you compile your code.
However, you still won't be able to display that character on the command line, because its default encoding (cp437 on my machine) doesn't support that character either, and you don't have the option of switching to UTF-8.

    I keep getting this error when trying to open some of my illustrator files. Usually after trying 5 or 6 time it will mysteriously open without a problem. I've reinstalled Illustrator and that didn't work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled CS3 and that didn't work.

    CS6, bringing in info from CAD 2014, on a PC, I got it to work, apparently, when I xref images from county assessor page, AI doesnt' recognized the file type imbedded with the CAD file.  I believe the image attaches as a png.  Once I detached the image from the CAD file, I was able to open it sucessfully.  Thanks for the response.

  • What determines the file encoding for ${C:file.txt} = 'abc' ?

    What determines the file encoding for

    I'm always getting ASCII as the encoding for file.txt after executing that assignment.

    Thanks so much.   I'll keep looking for the MSFT doc on this.  I scanned Bruce Payette's book and did not find anything there.
    It turns out to be one of those "by rote" things you have to learn about PowerShell.
    My concern about the lack of documentation is that MSFT might change the underlying code in the future to use Unicode and that might break some existing code.  If there was some MSFT provided documentation declaring ASCII as the intended encoding they
    might provide plenty of warning if they do a switch in encoding.
    I note also that if you try to write characters outside the ASCII set (see example below) that character substitution happens to find an ASCII character to use in place of the one outside the ASCII set.  In the example below a 'v' is substituted for
    the '√' character:
    ${C:xo.txt} = '√'

    Hi, i have the problem that i want to show my voltage output (4 channels) on a graph, by saving the data (the saving process is in a SubVI) on the PC  and reloading it in the mainVI when all actions are done. If i open the file with a editor, like UltraEdit, the data looks right, but on the graph, some parts of the voltage output are shown wrong (as vertical instead of horizontal line)... Anyone got a idea why? or how to fix it?

    First, let's get the chastizing out of the way:
    Was it really necessary to upload a 4 MB text file as is? Ever hear of compression?
    DO NOT UPLOAD BITMAP FILES OR CHANGE THE EXTENSIONS TO GET AROUND THE BAN ON BITMAPS. THERE IS A REASON THE BAN IS THERE.
    I don't understand what your VI's purpose is. Why are you continuously reading the file in a loop? Is this something you created on the fly for demonstration? If so, the Read From Spreadsheet File needs a True wired to the transpose? input. The graph is showing you exactly what's in the data file. Look at your data. At line 66100 it jumps.
    NOTE HOW I DID NOT UPLOAD A BITMAP.

  • CS4 error message: Could not read the file because the plug-in could not understand the file

    I get the error message in the subject line of this thread when I try to open a AI file in CS4. The file in question is a master plan for a river parkway. It includes a TIF of an aerial image of the project site (created from a SID file) with Illustrator generated linework for the various trails and other master plan features.  Illustrator attempts to open the file, which appears for a brief time but without the aerial image TIF background visible (only the Illustrator linework and text is visible), then this message pops up, I click OK and the file closes and I'm put back at the opening screen.
    I am running Windows 7 Pro (32-bit). My colleague created this file on his computer (same OS and programs as my computer) and he can open it fine. He did have this same issue for a bit, but then ran Updates under the Help menu and this seems to have fixed his problem. Before then, he had been re-starting his computer and having only Illustrator open, and was successful in getting the file to open.
    I ran the updates yesterday and am up to date but the problem persists.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi Sam,
    This is an issue that has plagued Illustrator CS4 since it's release. The problem is a memory issue. Adobe has never addressed it satisfactorily and likely won't since CS5 has now been released for almost a year now - tho I've read somewhere that CS5 has the same issue. On their site, Adobe has made a few weak mentions about it and has posted a hit-or-miss workaround, but their explanation kinda sounds like B.S., really and it's fairly apparent they're not sure what's going on and likely it's a compound problem and the result of a few different issues. They talk about some bug with color books between Photoshop and Illustrator, but that's DEFINITELY NOT the whole problem.
    Here's a solution, tho it's certainly not perfect and will not always work:
    1. Start a clean instance of Illustrator - DO NOT LOAD ANY FILES EXCEPT YOUR TARGET FILE, and
    DO NOT HAVE RUNNING OR LOAD ANY OTHER FILES DURING THE WORK SESSION.
    2. Find a good free memory manager that will allow you to free up memory with the click of a button, such as CLEANMEM - Google it - it's free.
    3. Free up memory before you start Illustrator and, if the file opens, after you get the file loaded.
    4. While you'll be able to work with the file, save it; manipulate and create new vector objects within the file, likely you will not be able to add additional linked files.
    In the past, the times that I've had this issue have been when working with really large files and large linked graphics - like convention display graphics. The issue just gobbles up, or limits memory allocation. Good Luck!

  • Don't understand: "the file [eg] 'Stained Glass l jpg' is offline..."

    Hi there,
    New to Lightroom 2; making some progress. I thought that I imported 800 images from either Elements 7 (that I have and want to use as Editor), or my hard drive--but I think there is something amiss. After I surveyed about a hundred images I came across a batch of about 60 pictures that I took of the new Opus Dei complex in NYC last November.
    Well, after the 1st. image of the Opus Dei batch was labeled (right word?) "The file named 'Stained Glass L JPG' is offline or missing " I said, Shucks! and went to the next photo of the batch--then I realized that all of the images are inaccessible in Lightroom.
    I must have botched the Import procedure, but I cannot figure out why lots of images are accessible--a lot of them are not.
    Thank you.
    Bill P

    Bill- If you go to grid view in Library, you can see easily what photos are offline or missing. Missing in this context means LR cannot locate the file. This happens when a folder has been moved or renamed outside of LR, i.e., in the Finder or Explorer.
    The first thing to try is to locate physically the image file, then direct LR to it. It most likely is on the disk where it started.

    Okay, This subject was just covered in a mag I was reading today..MacWorld. Startup in safe-mode [hold the shift key down when you hear the tone and release it when you see the Apple logo]. One you are booted up open MacintoshHD>System>Library>Extentions. In that folder look for the bt broadband or whatever the update was. It will have .kext on it. Throw it in the trash and restart.
    If you are not sure which it is you could open the Update you installed with Pacifist and search the files of the installer.
    Pacifist can be found at:
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
    Good Luck, Glynn

  • Imovie freezes on startup but i dont have the file com.apple.imovie.plist

    Can anybody help me please?
    Greetz

    If you have Lion (10.7.2) this is a hidden file.
    You can find it by opening a Finder Window. Then, in the top menu bar, click Go. Hold down the option key, and you should see Library. Go to the Library.
    There are multiple Library folders. There is the Macintosh HD/Library folder and also the Macintosh HD/Users/<your user name>/Library/ folder. You want the one under your user name.
    In this folder, look for the preferences folder. There you should find the plist file.

  • I dont understand the errormessage...

    Who can help me about this errormessage:
    main (09:33:23): FATAL ERROR in native method: JDWP "util.c" (Apr 6 2001), line 1013: Unexpected error, error code = 113 (JVMDI_ERROR_INTERNAL)
    I dont know where i can find anything about this error and what it means.
    I get the error between running my prog...
    Before everything runs fine!

    AFAIK, this is a problem with the JRE runtime. Your application/jdk uses some dll's which are either not present in the right directory or are corrupt because you may have installed other jvm on top of the original one.

  • Index issue - dont understand the cost

    Hello
    I have a 112mil row table that I have copied to a new tablespace, which worked fine
    I'm then adding indexes to the copied table, but gets huge costs in the plans when trying to do a query using the new index, compared to quirying the original table/indexes
    To begin with I tired changing my main index to another tablespace and bigger initial extend, but even if I remove all this, and put it in the same tablespace as the original index and created the same way, I get the same huge difference.
    In most om my system queries this will cause that the CBO doesn't use the index, and the queries get very slow. If I do a simple select and the index is actually chosen, even though the cost is huge, the actual query time is the same as the origibal table/query. I cant get the index cost to change by trying different dbms_stats.gather_index_stats settings
    Can anybody tell me why this new index comes up with such a huge cost, and what I can do to bring the cost down, so that the index actually gets chosen?
    Here are the basic information:
    It's on Oracle 10gR2 (10.2.0.4) EE
    The simplyfied create statement for both the original and the new index:
    CREATE INDEX IDX_POS_DATE ON FMC_POS
    ("UTC_DATE" DESC, FMC_LOGVES_ID)
    CREATE INDEX IDX_POS_DATE_P2 ON FMC_POS_p2

    You are exactly right. The plan for the original table is to good to be true when searching for recent dates, because the statistics are outdated. If I do searches for older data, I get the same cost for both selects
    The funny part is that the outdated to good to be true statistics gives me the better performance for the more complex selects in the system, because the index always gets chosen. I guess I will have to use hints in my complex selects
    It's possible that the clustering_factor of the index is not a good model of how well the data really is clustered. The method the optimizer uses to calculate this figure is very naive and can easily be much too high if the data has even a fairly small degree of scatter (relative to the index). You may find that modifying the clustering_factor in a realistic way will solve the problem. Since the optimizer is also pessimistic about branch block caching in nested loops and in-list iterators you could also consider reducing the blevel by 1 or 2 to encourage it to use a good index.
    There's a note on my blog about adjusting index stats: http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/2010/01/06/copy-stats/

    Hello ,
    I got a project from school , that I need to build a game like this :
    http://www.levelgame.net
    Ok , I divided it to two classes.
    one its the level class and one its game class.
    for now , I have build level 0 and the background of level 1 , but when I run it , it make some errors...
    first of all , here is the code
    Level class :
    import javax.imageio.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.awt.image.*;
    public class Level {
         public BufferedImage backgroundImage;
         public JPanel PanelOfLevel;
         public Level(String adress)
              InputStream img = getClass().getResourceAsStream(adress);
              try
              backgroundImage=ImageIO.read(img);
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
         public BufferedImage getImage()
              return backgroundImage;
         public void setImage (BufferedImage img)
              backgroundImage=img;
         public JPanel getLevelPane()
              return PanelOfLevel;
         public void setPanelOfLevel(JPanel newPanel)
              PanelOfLevel=newPanel;
    }And here is the game class code(for now)
    import javax.imageio.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.awt.image.*;
