Hi, Ralph,
The problem is that I did erase the partition, using disk utility, but I can't go back to my original disk size pre-partition, as disk utility won't let me do it and gives the message "Couldn’t modify partition map because file system verification failed." When I try to use Boot Camp Assistant it won't let me select the third option to remove windows.

You will have to call AppleCare and give them the model and serial number so they can advise who it is locked with. Then you will have to contact that cell provider and find out what their unlock process is, if there is a fee, and if you qualify. If it is locked to a company that does not have an unlock policy then you will not be able to unlock it.

  • I recently downloaded is x mountain lion and while it finished it erased all my data, some of which I need. When using disk utility I found my old data but it says corrupted. I can't repair and while restoring the error code 32 Broken Pipe appears. Help?

My data I need is on my computer but it needs to be repaired but can't and when I try to restore it/back it up it ends abruptly with error code 32 broken pipe.
It was damaged while installing os x mountain lion and I found my data on disk repair (utility)

Sounds like your hard drive is badly corrupted, likely due to problems that were already there when you started trying to install Mountain Lion. The problem is, if you don't have any backups already, you may not be able to recover all your data from this state. Do you have backups of that data already?
If not, I assume when you say that "it needs to be repaired but can't," you mean that Disk Utility tells you there is a problem with the disk, but that it is unable to repair it? If so, you can try repairing the drive using DiskWarrior, which can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. That may give you access to your data again, but may not.
Also, it's important to understand that if your data is not backed up, everything you do with the computer runs the risk of overwriting or corrupting that data. You may want to go straight to trying to recover your data. See Recovering deleted files.
Regarding the error code, if you're trying to back up the drive using Disk Utility's Restore tab, note that that is often not successful when the drive you're trying to back up is corrupt.
Once the situation is resolved - either because you have backups, are able to recover your data files or are forced to accept that they are gone permanently - you will need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system and all your apps from scratch.

  • Hi! I can't reply, delete or do anything with my emails on my iphone 5, It doesn't give me the opion icons anymore.

Everytime I open an email I don't get the icons for replay, forward, delete, archive anymore.
My kid as playng with it and I have no idea what he did to it!
    Thanks!

First quit the Mail app then reset the iPhone.
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally.
Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Resized partition using Disk Utility and now Windows 7 will not boot

    Hi,
    Hopefully someone can help me!!
I had previously used Boot Camp to install Windows 7. However, I later realised I had not given myself anywhere near enough disk space as I started using Windows for things I hadn't originally planned on using it for.
Anyway, long story short, to solve the problem I uninstalled some applications on my Mac OSX and used Disk Utility to decrease the size of my Mac partition. My plan was then to reboot to Windows and use a Windows application to increase the size of the Windows partition. However - I coudln't even get that far.
Upon decreasing the size of my Mac partition (succesfully) I restarted my Mac in order to boot to Windows. However, I was greeted with a message along the lines of "unable to boot to Windows please insert boot disk and press any key" (I can't remember the exact message).
I was wondering if anyone knows of any way to restore my Windows partition, retaining all of my previously saved files on my Windows disk. It's probably a long shot, but the thought of losing everything I have been working on for the last few months is a sickening one.
What does give me a bit of hope is that, if I click Boot Camp it seems to recognise that Windows 7 is installed as the option that appears is to uninstall it.
Furthermore, if I view partitions in Disk Utility, a "DISK0S4" is listed. However, it's only at 20gb - if this WAS my BootCamp partition previously, it was originally at something around 60gb (I think - either way, definitely bigger than 20gb!).
On top of this, my current Macintosh HD parition is at 260gb and with the DISK0S4 partition at 20.21gb, there seems to be some space missing... I'm hoping this is the files I've been working on over the last few months!
Anyway, I've done some searching on the net and it *seems* that GPT fdisk *might* be my savour. I've downloaded it but have no idea how to use it and don't plan on playing about with it as I could no doubt do some real damage. If it is likely to solve my problem however, I'm certainly more than capable of being walked through what I need to do.
    Please help!

    Hi Christopher,
I also have problems with Windows rebooting after partition resize trying to reduce Mac side and increase Windows side. I do not see the BootCamp partition labelled as such while running disk utility. The Windows partition shows up when I boot up while pressing the ALT key. However, when I try to run Windows, it says " error loading operatig system".
I also followed instruction and went through to run gdisk successfully. Results towards the end.
What can be done? Windows still does not boot and It shows ? Suspicious MBR at sector 0.

  • Using Disk Utility for Boot Camp to work

I'm trying to install Windows 7, but Boot Camp gave me the old error message about having unmovable data and needed to use Disk Utility to format it as a Single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume. So I backed everything up and am ready to go, but when I open Disk Utility and select my hard drive/disk, all the options under "erase" are grayed out. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

You can't format what you are using.
If you cloned your drive you would be able to boot from that; if you used another method and you don't have OS X installed on another hard drive, you have to use your DVD.

  • Upgrading HD and cloning using Disk Utility

I'm going to upgrade my MacBook Aluminum Unibody with a larger and faster hard drive (500 Go Seagate Momentus 7200.4 SATA 2,5" 7200T 16 Mo).
As you'd probably expect, I will need to clone my current system to the new HD.
To achieve my needs, my strategy is the following:
    1) booting up using Snow Leopard install DVD
    2) connecting my new drive through a USB enclosure
    3) using Disk Utility's "Restore" feature with Macintosh HD as source, and the new drive as destination
    4) switching the drives
I came across tons of people in the same scenario as mine during my research for the best solution, but it always ended up with Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Almost nothing about Disk Utility.
If they seem to work fine for most of us, I find Disk Utility more trustful (1), and I prefer block-to-block to file-to-file copy (2), as the last method will necessarily skip some "uncopyable" files.
I have none of the above software, and according to its documentation, I believed to understand that CCC can't achieve a block-to-block copy running on the source system (which does make sense).
So, considering I only need to clone & switch (no backup purpose or whatever) my hard drives, why would I use CCC/Super Duper over Disk Utility?
Yeah, a file-to-file copy will kind of defragment my system, but is there something wrong with my method? I really don't understand why DU is so underrated.
    Any feedback much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mickael

I see nothing wrong with using disk utility to do what you want. If I'm correct, you can only create a disk image with disk utility, so it will not be bootable. It will accomplish the same goal as other software to restore as you described. The advantage to cloning you drive with the other applications is that you will be able to boot from the external drive if problems arise. Both applications are free to download.
I used super duper to clone to an external drive as a backup and keep it updated. I always have it to boot from if my main drive fails. The process is up to you.
Note: I though you needed a disk image to restore from, but I was wrong. You can do a restore from the drive itself.
As i said, I see no problem. It's your choice.

  • Builidng RAID on mac pro using disk-utility

    Hello,
i want to build a RAID on my Intel mac.
First idea was using Disk Utility (DU).
Is DU able to create RAID 5 or only RAID 0/1 ?
If yes, and hints / or useful links ?
I have googled for a while but most hints are regarding raid 0/1 and/or mac xserve systems with specific cards/controllers
or should i use: softRAId app ?
    and:
    if there is a solution:
is the software raid 5 at apple really too slow to be happy ? is hardware-raid the only working solution ?
    best regards
    fidel

Check out some of the PCIe hardware controllers. There is CalDigit
RocketRAID reviewed by AMUG (they do excellent in-depth reviews).
Areca ARC-1220 RAID might be an option at some point. Would be nice if it did - but I don't see Mac Pro or OS X support.
    http://www.areca.com.tw/products/html/pcie-sata.htm
I prefer SoftRAID, but you'll have to wait for 3.6, or do as some and use Apple's and create RAID 1+0. Or XRAID

  • Unable to erase windows ntfs partition thru mac using disk utility

i connected my desktop hard disk to my mac. i am not able to delete any files from the Windows NTFS partition. in disk utility the erase option is greyed out.

NTFS is a read-only filesystem to OS X. You can read and copy files from an NTFS formatted drive but you cannot write to one.

  • Boot camp probl"back up disk and use disk util. to reform as single MAC OS.

The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
I am trying to install win 7 32 bit but before i partition my mac osx an error message pops up with the above wording...I went to disk utility and it is already a single mac osx (journaled). any help would be great and much appreciated..thank you for viewing.

The error message must be the title of 100s of threads.
Do you know how to backup?
It can't move files, some are fixed, the free space has to also be unfragmented contiguous chunk at the end of the drive.
Disk Utility Restore tab (and Help menu).
and of course external backup drive. And backup is step #1. There is a PDF you can save or print from the Boot Camp Assistant.
If you only have TimeMachine for backup you might want to install OS X anyway on a small 30GB partition (shrink partition size) or use your OS X DVD.
From OS X DVD go to Utility and then Disk Utility. Restore to another drive and that should be then bootable.
Or pick up SuperDuper or Carbon Copy to clone-backup and use one of those.
iDefrag $$ may be able to optimize the free space.
But it is wiser to first insure any data and files are backed up before changing or installing another OS, and before changing partitions around.

  • Problems erasing window bootcamp partion using Disk Utility

Hi guys, ive removed my windows partion before in the past without any hiccups, but this time i seem to have run into some problems.
If i go into boot camp assistant, it wont let me proceed beyond the start menu. When i click continue it says
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
So i went into Disk utility to erase the Windows partion, only now i get this message
    "Volume Erase failed
Volume Erase failed with the error:
    MediaKit reports checksum operation failure."
I dont have any other programs such as diskwarrior, and in the past Disk utilitiy served me well. Im just wondering whats going on here, and if anyone is able to help fix this problem? Thanks in advance

Hi thanks for your help man, but i still cant get it to restore the partion. If i go into the partion tab i see my two partions under the Volume scheme... but i cant do anything as it is all greyed out. Would you or anyone else have any recommendations... or should i invest in Diskwarrior? at the moment disk utility is just not working out for me. Thanks

  • I accidently used Disk Utility to fix a partition. I cant boot in with any USB drive. Help.

I accidentally used Disk Utility to fix a partition.  It erased it.  I desperately need to restore it.
I have an imac without a cdrom.  How do I create a bootable usb with testdisk as for some bizarre reason it seems impossible to create a bootable usb drive for osx.  I tried GParted and the ultimate boot disk that both have test disk.
I am stumped.  Why can't I boot into my imac with a usb?  I have a mac air that I just cant seem to create a usb drive with testdrive thats bootable.  I even tried rEFit but no luck.
Anyone have an idea? How do I fix my system ?

I have an imac OSX 10.8.
I tried creating a usb drive of testdisk on my mac air so that I could use it to boot into the iMAC and restore the partition table.
    I created it using:
    hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o target.img ~/Desktop/ubcd530.iso
    dd if=./target.img.dmg of=/dev/rdisk1 bs=1m
It did not work.  It would not boot.  I also tried Gnome Partition tool and that did not boot either.  I need my old system as it has important data
    Any tips? Thanks!

  • Boot Camp Assistant: Using disk utility? (PLEASE HELP!)

I am trying to download Windows XP with boot camp and I waited for the disk to be partitioned (I'm not even really sure what that means) and then it says:

Okay, so I went to Disk Utility and now I have no idea what I am supposed to do. Please help!

If you use Time Machine you can reinstall Leopard and then using the Install Disc go to the Utilities and go to the Restore from Time Machine. You can restore your new drive to any of the saved days. It would save them to the hard disk defragmented. Another program is SuperDuper! which can make a clone of your Macintosh HD to an external disc as a bootable option. This is easier and faster though this program has not been confirmed to work with Leopard yet. And as I said before you can buy iDefrag for $30 and not have to restore and erase anything. But what ever you do, make sure to back your files up.

  • Start up and shut down is slow after erasing free space using disk utility?

I went to Disk Utility, clicked Erase, and then "Erase Free Space." When I saw that it was going to take 1 hour and 30 minutes, I tried closing disk utility. It wouldn't let me exit, so instead I pressed "Skip." But when you hover over the "Skip" button it says, "Erase all data and reformat the disk."
I'm wondering if the fact that I pressed the skip button has anything to do with my computer shutting down/starting up A LOT slower now. If so, what can I do to fix it?
    Thanks!

Just wanted to give an update. I called Apple and apparently, you shouldn't empty the free space using disk utility while you're logged in. I had to insert the Installations CD and press the "C" button while my computer restarted, and used Disk Utility from there. My start up and shut down speed still isn't exactly the way it was before, but this definitely made a difference.
Thank you to those who replied to my question!
