I have a MacPro 3,1 with 2 Nvidia 8800GT Kernel Panic
Ever since I installed Lion it is Kernel Panic Central! It seems to be Graphic IO related I submitted the crash....
This box was completely indestructuble till OS X Lion, It ran great for about a week after the upgrade, but now it's crashing like crazy is anyone else having this issue on a similar box?
I'm dreading a re-intall from scratch but.....running out of choices.
usually I get some graphihc artifacts then the Kernel Panic presents itself
Try with first just one 8800, then the other, removing one, and see if the panics go away.
Every new OS has done something similar. people said the same back in 2009 with their 8800GTs failing thnking the new OS and drivers, or added stress (and heat).
Toasting an 8800GT in the oven has been known to bring it back to life, apparently weak solder joints?

I have a MacPro, circa 2012, with the 27in monitor.
I am having issues with photo booth going into full screen. And I have not been able to find a place where I can change the preferences.
Thanks for any info or suggestions. The Mac OS X kernel is the heart of the Operating System. When it gets in a jam that cannot be fixed, or when certain Hardware problems occur, it halts with a kernel panic.
Kernel panic logs are saved, and can be read back later. If you cannot boot up normally, sometimes you can boot up in Safe Mode to read out the kernel panic from the log:
Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic

I have a late 2009 iMac, with the default Nvidia 9400 Graphics card.
I was wondering what my options are for upgrading. I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp, so I need a card that is compatible/has available drivers.
This is for gaming. On the lowest settings of "Call of Duty 4", I get about 100 FPS... Was hoping to be able to play on higher resolution w/o the fps lag.
I'm not good with the hardware part of computers at all, but know how to get around the OS.In most cases the graphics cards in iMacs are Not upgradeable. They are usually soldered to the logic board. RAM is considered, along with harddrives, the only component that is upgradeable in an iMac, unlike in PC's. So basically you would need to sell your unit and purchase an iMac with a more powerful graphics card.
Hope this helps -
RAID mirror with software utility caused kernel panic every time
Using disc utility to make a mirror of 2 drives, click create and i get kernel panic and have to power off machine. if i try to start the machine with either of the two disks in it (together or individually) i get same kernel panic and have to power off.
The disks are in an external storage array (sonnet d500). I have a second storage array with raided disks in and i have raided disk inside the mac too. these all work fine..
originally 2 weeks ago i had the 2 disks working in a group of 4 disks set as a mirror of 2 striped disks. One disk in this setup failed and with this config you can never 'recover'or rebuild it - you get a degraded mirror and you can backup the data, but you must completely rebuild the raid again as the mirror of stripes never lets you add a new disk in again.period. not good.
I replaced the failed disk and rebuilt the mirror of stripes. this lasted a day until a second disk failed (all 4 were bought at same time so i was kind of expecting that to happen once one failed).
i replaced the second faulty hdd and thought about my disk usage and decided i would not make another mirror of stripes and i would make 2 mirrors instead for safe-ish storage and then transfer data to a striped raid set for editing from instead of direct from the mirror of stripes volume.
i tried to delete the raid but got a kernel panic
if i started the machine with any of the 4 disks i would get a kernel panic.
i moved the disks one by one into an older G5 running Tiger and managed to erase the raid info on 2 of them. The two new ones had some strange raid info and the Tiger machien thought there was an extra disk in the machine and would not erase or partition or allow me to destroy the raid whatever i tried.
I will be moving these now into an old XP PC to try to erase the boot records etc and erase them to be able to use them again in either mac pro or G5. painful..
so.. i ended up with 2 erased drives and have 2 new drives with dodgy raid info that causes kernel panics on the leopard machine and wont go in the Tiger machine.
The two erased drives are what ive now been trying to use in the mac pro to create a mirror - this now caused kernel panics when creating the mirror to start with and when installed in the machine at all. so i will be erasing them again in the tiger machine soon (its busy erasing with zeros another new disk that i added to the Tiger machine 2 weeks ago which seems to have some fault when raided!!! but thats another story).
so.. is anyone else having problems with creating basic mirror in 10.5.4 or is it just me??
i have a sonnet tempo e4p card with 2 external sata disk enclosures, latest firmware for the e4p card. all other previously existing raid volumes are working fine. i have one set of 2 striped disks, one set of 3 striped disks and one set of 2 stripes which are mirrored - all happy and working fine. but i cant make a new mirror of 2 disks...
I phoned Apple support and they said all raid info was kept on the disk itself and nothing on the actual machine and suggested i take the machine to an apple care centre for some tlc (although its disk i am having a problem with). since all my other disk arrays work fine i don't really want to rebuild the whole machine from scratch if i can avoid it.
Any suggestions of what i can try ??well it turns out the new disk i bought just werent any good. my g5 powermac raid mirror issue was related to one new disk with lots of bad blocks (speed tools showed that up) so i have learnt my lesson on cheap non raid disks for raid..
am waiting on a couple of new ultrastar enterprise disks to tuen up so i can go back to the macpro and try to add a mirror again.
i am still stuck wih several new disks that i cannot format now in the macpro on leopard or on the g5 powermac with tiger.
ive tried softraid and that cant do it, speedtools pcformat util cant do it, disk utility crashes when i try to eras them and diskutil from termianl starts then doenst get anywhere and my pc sata card doesnt work so my last resort pc option still doesnt help me clear the partition map on these drives - ones that diskutility on leopard made for me - and drives which still cause kernel panics on the macpro if i put them in it..
here is what diskutil says on my g5:
/dev/disk0

disk0 is the one with the bad partition info.
it thinks it has a double raid as the console shows on startup:
(both store45 and cache it thinks are on this disk - cache was my old mirror of stripes set on other machine, store45 was new name for my mirror, so seems like it hadnt deleted the original raid partition info before making new info which now kernel panics)
Jul 18 18:48:05 localhost kernel[0]: AppleRAID::degradeSet - starting the set "STORE45" (B9C48619-6B2C-4547-A01E-4864754EA7E2).

so currently i have 2 new 500gb disks which cant be partitioned back to anything at all on either machine. looks like i will have to buy a new pc to reformat them..
any suggestions of how to clear the partition map info and get them back to freespace ?? -
SERIOUS Problem with mac pro and kernel panics
Hi guys, I have a mac pro with 6 gigabytes of RAM + a RAID 0+1 system with 4 750 gigabytes HD's. ( 2 drives work in stripped mode, and the other 2 drives mirror them )
I was experiencing some frecuent kernel panics when using final cut or trying to watch DVD's a few weeks ago. I saved some error logs then and uploaded them to my e-mail. The problem is that now the frequency of the panics is so high that the computer has turned unusable, it reaches the desktop without panics, but when I click finalcut and it starts opening , it panics all the time, if I start to open folders, it panics, anything I try = panic.
Weeks ago I made the Apple Hardware test, testing the memory a lot and the memory seemed to be fine,
Could you guys help me to identify the source of this?, I am desperate because the MacPro is my Working tool. Is there a way to check the hard drives also? ( remember I have raid 0+1 )
Here are the error logs that I managed to capture.

System model name: MacPro1,1 (Mac-F4208DC8)What you mention is really interesting , maybe I could try to benchmark the card very hard to see if I get the panics there. I will try that for sure, because my RAID wasn't actually a 0+1. It's what they call a RAID 10 , ( two groups of mirrored drives, + striped )
It's like this post in macosrumors, but instead of two groups of striped disks, the big group is striped, and I got two smaller mirrored groups.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=445731
And I think that sould be working just fine without the RAID PCI-X card right ? ( maybe I'm wrong here , that's why I need your input guys . ) -
Macbook pro 2009 unibody with white screen and kernel panics
I upgrade to Lion a month or two ago and things have been working fine. A few days ago, I try to wake my computer from sleep and it freezes on a white screen. I reboot only to continue to find the white screen. I hear the chime every time on boot. From then on, I am having different responses on startup.
Initially I could boot to single user mode no problem, but would continue to get white screen on regular boot. I tried to reinstall lion, and on restart midway through install I got the half-gray "you need to restart" kernel panic screen.
Yesterday at apple store, it would not boot to single user, OS select, verbose, etc. modes. They told me it was logic board or hard drive.
Bough a SSD, successfully installed Snow Leopard, and then continued to have similar kernel panics.
Now, replaced originaly harddrive and successfully reinstalled Lion, although got a kernel panic on the halfway reboot (log posted below). Install finished, and now up and running for about an hour. Decided to reboot to check, and big surprise, one more kernel panic. (2nd log posted below).
Is this a logic board? Seems like the HD is not the problem since same issue with a SSD.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated, apply was very unhelpful (I am out of warranty, no applecare). Thanks

How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
Some "common" error indicators:
SNS - sensor error
MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
MOT - fan error
Cannot guarantee that it will reveal anything. As for using the other GPU all I say is you can try switching to it in Energy Saver preferences. -

Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Mid 2012): Issues with three displays and multiple DVI, HDMI connections
It's not the USB data that is needed to run three displays. It's the extra POWER. If you read the Apple article, they say the only solution they endorse is their US$100 Dual-Link adapters. Check the table at the end of the article.

I have an early 2008 macbook with the nvidia 8600m video problem just started
Is it possible to get a logic board replacement part for this?
Just my luck this had to happen now this problem was covered by apple until december 7, 2012. I never recieved any information about this from apple.

I have several new mid-2011 21.5" imacs that kernel panic
The are running fully updated OS X 10.6.8, booting to a 64bit kernel. All the available firmware updates for the graphics card and bluetooth have been done. If I boot them into Safe Mode or into 32bit kernel mode, they do not panic. That being said, I know it is possible it is a piece of software that could be causing the issue, but I wanted the crash log posted and looked at anyway - incase I am wrong.

Following an Apple Support Team member's advice, I retrieved as many files as I could and erased and repaired the HD before completing a fresh install from a bootable USB. Once I restored all of my software I set it backing up to Time Machine over night only to find that it had crashed and restarted over night before that had completed. I attach the crash report below:

MacPro whirring sound with Flash video
I have a MacPro (early 2008) with an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT card. Whenever I'm on a website using Safari that displays Flash video (an ad or a slideshow, etc) I hear a medium-pitched whirring sound. Despite sticking my ear close to the inside of the Mac, I can't determine if it's coming from the video card, a fan, or a hard drive. I read that there is a recall on certain serials of this video card but the defect would cause distorted or no video at all. I'm using the latest version of Snow Leopard with 8gb ram. Mac Pro QuadCore Intel Xeon 2x2.8Ghz.
Any feedback is appreciated.
GlenThis could be coming from the fan on the video card. Think of it this way, when flash comes up on screen, it uses more video processing power. This in turn heats up the GPU, which in turn can increase the fan speed and thereby elevating the volume level of the fan in operation.
This isn't necessarily the issue, but there is a better than average possibility, and it does happen to fit the facts. How does it sound when you try other graphically intensive operations on the computer? If it does the same thing I think you have found your answer.
Doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong, but I don't have alot for comparison as I have a pair of video cards in my computer, but they never got the chance to use factory cooling as before I installed them, I added Arctic Cooling Accelero Pro V2 to each card. These are super quiet. -
MacPro early 2008 kernel panic at startup - need help!
I have a MacPro early 2008 with OS 10.7.5 and I can't get it to restart without getting a kernel panic error. I get it at the grey screen at normal startup, safe mode, and trying to boot from the original install disk. I reset SMC and PRAM and still nothing. Running the extended diagnostics last night turned up no error codes. Any ideas?
Not sure what else to try at this point other than ordering a replacement graphics card which could be a chore to find in itself. Is there anyway to confirm if that is it?
Thanks!this is the last one I got before everything stopped.

MacPro 1,1 10.6.8 won't boot after kernel panic
I apologize for the long post, but figured I'd lay out the whole scenario.
I had a kernel panic in Safari yesterday. Powered down. Powered on. Message appeared saying to power down, and restart again. Did that. Then the fun started. The restart was slower than normal, with each screen (gray, blue, Snow Leopard background screen) slow to come up and move to next. Finally, it stopped on the Snow Leopard screen but the login screen never appeared.
I have my fair share of kernel panics, sometimes triggered by something Virus Barrier is guarding against, sometimes for other reasons. I regularly save the reports but can't say off the top of my head that I know of something that could be implicated in this present issue.
Since this issue surfaced, I've tried multiple interventions to no avail. I used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory and optimize the disk, both reported by the software as successful. The SMART status of the disk was normal. Verified and repaired permissions. As is typical, some were reported but nothing noticeably out of the ordinary. Still not able to reboot.
Used Apple's Disk Utility to check the status of the drive, and ran through the other available diagnostic tests. Still not able to reboot.
Among different attempts to restart, sometimes it stopped at blue screen, sometimes at Snow Leopard default background screen image.
Reset PRAM. Still no reboot. Booted into Single user mode/verbose mode. Then fsck -fy. The second time I ran the latter, it reported "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" and I ran fsck -fy once more.
The report on screen in Single User mode showed some things I don't know how to interpret. Lines of the report beginning with "AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= " were as follows:
AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=1
AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=7
AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=6
AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
Other things from the report:
• Mac Framework successfully initialized using 16384 buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers
• BSD root: disk1s2, major 14, minor 5
• jnl: unknown-dev
• com.apple.launched 1 com.apple.launched1 *** launched[1] has started up. ***
Do things in this list look normal? Any red flags?
As it stands now, none of the measures have enabled the computer to reboot. When I power on it goes straight to the default Snow Leopard screen. Oddly, if I power it off but then later go back and hit the space bar, such as one would do when the computer has been idle and the computer or screen has gone to sleep, the computer instantly powers itself on. Likewise, trying to power on and hold down the "c" key to attempt to boot from the system CD to Disk Utility does the same thing. That's really odd. Powering on via any key on keyboard is not expected behavior!
So ... what I most want to determine is:
• Were Disk Warrior and Disk Utility mistaken in reporting that the hard drive is functioning normally? Was it actually failing?
• Did the fsck -fy routine, with the reported action "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED," hasten it to its death?
• Is it more likely that the processor or some other major hardware issue is involved?
The computer is old, and has been more fitful over the past 6 months or so, but I've also had more issues with Virus Barrier forcing kernel panics during that same time, so it's been hard to say whether it was the computer that was acting wonky or Virus Barrier causing the wonkiness.
I just need to know whether I should wipe and reformat the existing WD disk, go buy a new disk to format, or give up on the computer and order a new MacPro model to replace it. If the latter was undertaken, I would really prefer to get the old MacPro functioning long enough to have use of it while I can complete an order and get something new set up. I have some tasks that I need to be getting done and data that I need to access to take of other tasks. I have a current Time Machine back up. But now that I can't even boot from Disk Utility, it seems I will have to buy another drive to do the interim solution.
I would very, very appreciative of any expert advice.
DebbieHi hatter,
Good to talk with you again about my Mac Pro 1,1. Can't believe I still have this stalwart machine, but it just keeps on keepin' on.
I have a Mac Box Set with Snow Leopard. That's the disk I was using Disk Utility from. I did the hardware tests that I saw among the tools available when one boots from the disk. Could be I'm missing something.
While I was waiting for a reply from someone at Discussions, I went looking at Walmart for an SATA disk. They were completely out of them due to local storms that fried a lot of people's computers and hardware. It's a small town. Not a lot of options. So I came back home and thought I'd try again to boot from the Apple DVD. That time it worked. I was going to do a restore from the Time Machine backup, but then decided to just reinstall the OS from the DVD and see what happened. Clean seemed better than dirty, you know?
At any rate, I installed the OS - to the same WD Caviar Black hard disk. When it restarted, everything came up looking back to normal, except that I need to update to 10.6.8 and reinstall iWork apps and other Apple add-ons as needed. Oh what a relief it is!
I would like to do some hardware testing though. If you can advise, I would appreciate it. -
Please help with a Kernel Panic Log
I was wondering if anyone could help me with my wife's kernel panic log. I have reseated her ram twice, and did the command option p +r to reset pram and she is still getting them. I can boot in safe mode with no kp's. I definitely don't know what I am doing just reading as many posts as possible. The computer is a Macbook Pro 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo upgrade to 6gb of ram about 6mths ago. The most recent change she has made when getting her first kp was at her new job she logged on to the wireless network and said she was getting a lot of page erros from sites. They are a PC based network, and that's all i really know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Current Flash - Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.235. Preference panes are in /Home/Library/Preference Panes/ or /Library/Preference Panes/. Also, search for SIMBL and remove all instances if you find it. Use EasyFind 4.9.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:
AppZapper 2.0.1
AppDelete 3.2.6
Automaton 1.50
Hazel
AppCleaner 2.1.0
CleanApp
iTrash 1.8.2
Amnesia
Uninstaller 1.15.1
Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
