I have a windows vista pc and want to use migration assistant to copy files over. From what I understand, it will copy over my user profile and settings as well. Is there anyway to just copy files?
Hey everyone, I just bought a new macbook pro 13-inch (late 2011 model) and I want to use migration assistant to copy over my photos, iTunes library, documents, etc. I know this can be done wirelessly or by connecting the two computers by Ethernet cable (windows vista pc --> macbook pro). Which is faster?
I also have heard that using migration assistant copies over the user file as well and makes it the new one on the mac. I would only like to copy over files, not user settings. How do I do this?
Thanks!
P.S. I'm assuming that when my iTunes library is copied, the mp3 files are copied too. Could someone please confirm this?

How to migrate Address book and Stickies without using Migration Assistant
Can anyone direct me on how I can copy over my address book and all of my stickies from one OSx HDD to a new HDD?
I noticed when I went into the Migration Assistant, that some of the options were greyed out such as "Other Data" in my profile and seemed to be pretty huge. So I don't want to use the Migration Assistant because I did a clean install on this machine and I am worried about migrating garbage from my old installation.
Thanks.Hi
With Address Book you can simply open the application, go to File/Export/Address Book Archive, and save. To import on the target Mac/Installation go to File/Import/Address Book Archive.
If the system has become a non bootable system but you can mount the drive then simply go to the relevant users home folder ~/Library/Application Support/ and copy the Address Book folder to the same location on the target Mac/Installation.
For Stickies data simple go to the relevant users home folder ~/Library/ and copy the file entitled StickiesDatabase to the same location on the target Mac/Installation. -
when i use migration assistant to transfer my iTunes music it creates a new and separate user account which is annoying but even worse when i attempt to play songs iTunes states that it can't locate file???

See this -> Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support
"If two user accounts have the same name
If your new Mac already has a user account with the same name as one you're trying to transfer, Migration Assistant lets you decide what to do. You can either replace the existing user on your new Mac, or give the user you're migrating a new account name.
Selecting the option to replace an existing user overwrites that user's Home folder on your new Mac. This can be convenient if you just set up your new Mac using the same account name and of your important data is still on your original Mac. Don't select the option to replace the existing user unless you're certain you don't have any important files stored in this user's Home folder on your new Mac."
I create an new account named Admin, then log into this account to run Migration Assistant. -

Hi! I just bought a new Macbook Pro with the latest OS (10.9.3). I have an older macbook pro with 10.6.8. I want to use the migration assistance but it says that the OS is old and has to be updated. When I search for updates, it doesnt find a new one, but I read that with 10.6.8 I should be fine. What should I do?

Changed computers and can't use migration assistant - erk!!
I just got a new Macbook - both Word and Appleworks are on my ibook and I don't have the original discs to hand - is there a way to migrate them onto my macbook? Problem is my ibook doesn't have Migration Assistant on it as it runs on 10.3.9 - I don't really want to have to buy both iworks and Mac Office again when I have already bought earlier versions of both I'm familiar with and like. Any ideas?
Hello
It's really simple. Read the License delivered with every application. It claims that you must have one legal copy of every Apple's application for each machine on which you want to use it.
For µSoft products, I don't know the rule.
If you keep the two machines, you must buy new copies of Apple's programs.
If you sell the old one, you must sell the bundled apps with it so, AppleWorks will leave you and you will have to buy a new copy.
If you destroy the old machine, you may keep the programs which where bundled with it.
To transfer AppleWorks to the Mackbook, link the two machines with a Firewire cable and use the ibook in target mode so you will be able to copy the AppleWorks folder from the ibook to the Macbook.
Don't forget to delete it from the ibook.
Doing that, copy also the fonts delivered with AppleWorks.
A safer track would be to use the ibook to burn a CD with the AppleWorks folder and the AppleWorks fonts so they would be available in case of you will be forced to re-install things on the Macbook.

Missing notes and documents after using migration assistant
Hey there,
I recently "killed" my macbook with a glass of water and tried to at least save all my documents, notes, safari-bookmarks and anything else from the hard disk.
I managed to copy all my word / excel documents and downloads and photos etc. manually to another mac, but I'm struggling to find my notes from the desktop bar. I tried using the migration assistant to get them from the hard disk to the new mac, but they are just not showing up, when I open the notes on the desktop bar of my migrated user account on the new mac. Also none of my documents, which I copied manually to another user account before, are showing up. Except for my Safari bookmarks and contacts nothing seems to be moved to my new mac.
Has anyone dealt with this problem, too and knows how to get the notes back? Restarting the mac didn't help.If the 2 computers have the correct cable connections, try the Target Disk Mode.

Any advice would be apprecitated.
ThanksSystem Preferences/Users & Groups shows you the various user accounts you have.
Look at your hard drive in the Finder sidebar. You should see Applications, Library, System, and Users. If you look in Users you will see a Shared folder. From the user Migration Assistant created, find the iTunes folder and drag it to Shared. Log out and log in using your normal user account, go to the same place and copy it to Music in your normal user account. Another option is to leave it in shared so any user can access it. You will have to tell iTunes where to find the music by going to iTunes/Preferences/Advanced.

As above - first time I have used a forum, so thought I had to put all the details into the heading
Migration assistant doesn't move all the necessary files.
You really need to reinstall your Adobe apps on the new system to get all the support files in the right place (and with the right permissions). -
I have an iPad 2 that I want to use with video mirroring to give lectures with. I bought a VGA Adapter for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod as I want to be able to connect with any TV, monitor or projector for lectures, not just an HD device.. After plugging in my iPad to the VGA adapter and then to the video device, it appears that there is no connection with the iPad. Anybody have any thoughts?
Thanks, SteveThis article outlines how to use the Apple AV adapter or VGA Adapter to connect your iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation) to an external TV, projector, or display. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4108

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro Retina, and I have an old Macbook Pro w/o Retina and wish to use migration assistant. I still want to use the older Macbook Pro and keep all the files on it, but copy them and also put them on my new Macbook. What I'm trying to say is, can I use migration assistant to move files to a new Mac, while keeping the files on the old computer?
You can omit some broad categories, but you can't pick and choose individual items.
See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion (preferred method), or the similar Using Migration Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the gory details. -
Transferring iMac 27" to my Macbook Pro and not using Migration Assistant?
Hello,
I have my new iMac all set up and used Migration Assistant from my old iMac but created a new user account when I first set up my iMac and chose the do not migrate option. I didn't have the right Firewire cord so had to use Migration Assistant to transfer over after I was all set up with internet.
My new iMac is all up and running and I'd like to now migrate all my files to my Macbook Pro without doing it wirelessly (as it took over 24 hours to do last time). I'd like to transfer over files using my external hard drive.
elmac gave me some information in regards to another question which I edited here:
Hi, I use both TM & SuperDuper (2 different EHD's) I copy from SuperDuper (updated daily)(My Home Folder) iTunes you can enable sharing between computers and transfer that way..Photos from iPhoto Library..dragNdrop I use my Network, not as fast as FW..but easier on the mind. When I unpack my mac, I just set up with my email & Apple passwords..After that I repair Permissions then go about transferring.
Can I just transfer my home folder called Tuley from the main hard drive on my iMac to the user account section on my new Macbook Pro? Then I can transfer over the itunes folder etc.? I just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

Creating an account in System Preferences isn't the same as just putting a home folder into /Users/. The account needs to be created first.
Then I can transfer over the itunes folder etc.?
Yes.

How to recover Mail and Mail Downloads when you can't use Migration Assistant
I have a MacBook 2.4gHz that had a 750GB HD that crashed yesterday. Disk Utility said "This Hard Drive has failed, recover or backup what you can, then reformat." So, I removed the 750GB HD and replaced the original 160GB HD and reinstalled OS 10.7 on that Drive. I put the 750GB HD in an external case and hooked it up by USB (only available hookup with my external case). I can see all my content and tried to use Migration Assistant, but it hangs up at "preparing content to transfer." So, I decided I would have to drag all the old content onto my new user on the internal HD. I moved Movies, Pictures, Desktop, Documents, Music, and Downloads. However, I can't move any of the parts of the hidden User Library, primarily because I can't find or see it.
My question is how to access the User Library in a non-bootable (although having OS 10.7 installed) External HD. I've tried the ~/Library/ in Go>Go to Folder, but it goes to the running HD User folder, not the external. Can anyone tell me how to crack into this folder? I'd like to retrieve preferences, mailboxes, address book, etc.
I realize it could be lost, but literally everything else is still present. FYI: I plan to hang onto the 750 until the replacement HD arrives, so I can be reminded what Applications I had installed. There isn't room for all of those on the smaller HD.
Thanks,
RondaUpdate: I managed to get Migration Assistant to move something, but it didn't work out as I expected. Because I've already installed the OS and some applications that I need, as well as copying over most of the user files except the library, there wasn't much room left on the smaller disk. I purchased the firewire 9pin to 6pin cable that would allow me to use the firewire port on the external drive and selected the main user. There wasn't enough room to move all of the user, so I selected only the "Other Files" folder (about 2 GB), not all the items I had already copied. I set that to install last night at 9:32pm. At 4:00am it said there was still 10 hrs and 29 minutes to go. My husband checked it at 6:45am and it said 19 more minutes. When he arrived home at 4:30pm, it was finished. When I arrived home and logged out of the administrator and in to the main user, immediately it showed my desktop with all the folders that I had placed in the sidebar of the Finder window and everything looked exactly like it had on Monday before the crash, then the beachball started spinning and when it finally came up for air, all those folders were gone, my dock appearance was gone and everything was back to the bland new user settings that Mac OS starts with.
My mail file did get moved over with its thousands of messages, but not mail uploads nor the desktop appearance settings and it doesn't appear that any other settings have migrated either. It's difficult to tell, since I can't install my applications on the smaller drive.
The replacement drive from WD arrived, but it is a 2TB "upgrade" and it doesn't even fit in my MacBook, so I have to send that back and wait longer.
I'm still trying to recover my appearance, and combine the various users into one. If anyone has suggestions on how to get the mail uploads folder, preferences, etc. I'd love to hear them. -

Will windows os under parallels migrate to new mac using migration assistant
I have been using parallels 7 with windows 7 on a 2008 macbook pro. I have gotten a new 2012 macbook pro and plan to use migration assistant. Will windows install without my having to call Microsoft? I also have Office 2010 and wonder if I need to call Microsoft to allow me to use it on the new MacBook?
I have made a clone of my older computer. I have done Time Machine alsoMigration Assistant only migrates - it does not delete anything from the 'other' machine.
Good luck,
Clinton
