I have just bought a used 2009 macbook pro, I have updated to OS X but I am completely new to mac, are there any fairly priced utility softwares out there which will help me keep my mac running smoothly?

I have just bought a used 2009 macbook pro, but I am new to computing and mac so can anybody please tell me if there is reliable software that will help me keep my macbook running at its best without breaking the bank?

In General 3rd Party AV Software and Cleaning Utilities tend to cause More Issues than they claim to fix...
They are Not Required...
Mac OS X tends to look after itself.

  • Just bought a used '06 MacBook Pro. Where can I get instructions for starting it up?  This is all new to me. When I powered it on it showed "Utilities".  Asking me to select startup system - am I supposed to insert the Snow Leopard disk?

I'm so lame at this! I bought the laptop used and was told that Snow Leopard was installed. I don't want to mess this up. Are there detailed instructions anywhere that will take me through this step by step?

The utilities window is giving me 4 choices: Restore from Time Machine Backup - You have a  backup of your system that you want to restore
Reinstall Mac OS X - Set up and install a new copy of 'Lion'.
Get help online - Browse Apple support
Disk Utility - Repair or erase a disk using Disk Utility.
If I use Time Machine is it going to restore all of the previous owners content?

  • I Just bought Lion for my MacBook Pro. Do I have to buy it again to install it in my Macbook?

I Just bought Lion for my MacBook Pro. Do I have to buy it again to install it in my Macbook?

Nope. Just login to your Mac App store account on your MacBook, under purchased, re-download it. Then, before you install, do this:

    Nice to keep around.

There are no XP or Vista drivers for the new Apple computer hardware. Apple stopped XP and Vista support. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4410.

  • I was just given a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro. It does not have a system on it.

I have my original disks from my early 2009 MacBook Pro. When I try to use the OS Install disk to install 10.5, which is what the early MacBook came with, it won't boot the computer. I have the upgrade to 10.6.3, but it will not work either, since it is only an upgrade.
I have 10.6.8 backed up to an external disk, but I want to have a different administrator name so we don't get confused. I have used the backup to at least get the mid 2009 working. I am unable to do an Erase and Install, which is what I want to do, even though there is nothing there.

Is there any fix? Are the earlier, early 2009 disks incompatible with the mid 2009? Am I stuck with having the same Administrator for two computers? Does anyone have any suggestions?
There are compelling reasons that I don't want to upgrade past 10.6. I won't be able to get at MOST of my data because of Apple no longer supporting Rosetta. I have two other computers running Mountain Lion and Mavericks, but want to keep 10.6.8 on the MacBook Pros early and mid 2009.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Or you can purchase replacement discs from Apple:

It's possible that even the retail copy of Snow Leopard will not work because that model came with a special build of Snow Leopard. You cannot install Leopard on that model.

  • I have just bought a 2nd hand MacBook pro and need to wipe the previous owners details. How do I do that?

Hiya, so I've got this old MacBook Pro and need to wipe the admin user but have no password to work with. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to get rid of her and set myself up please? Thanks.

You will need the original Tiger installation disks.  Insert the install disk, open Disk Utility from the UTILITIES menu, erase the HDD and inatall the OSX.  That will create your own Apple ID.  The second option is to use a retail Leopard or Snow Leopard disk instead, but they do not come with all of the applications.

  • Just installed Lion on 2009 MacBook Pro moved from Snow Leopard - img. copies of movies will not play on DVD player

I have a MacBook Pro 2009.   In order to get iCloud I have moved to Lion.   Mountain Lion will slow machine too much.  I now find that DVD player will not play the Disc Image  .img  movie files.  When I open DVD player and click File and Open DVD Media, the Disc Image files are greyed out.  The .dvdproj files are not greyed but if I click on them I get a message that "the media type is not supported".   I could play the movies without any problem before I switched to Lion.  The switch was done at the Apple store by an Apple Technician.    Any idea what is happening?

Download and install VLC. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html and get rid of DivX.

  • Used 2009 Macbook Pro?

I was offered a used Macbook Pro 15', 2.66 GHz, 4GB, Anti-Glare Screen, 500GB for $1,000. Is this a good deal or no? I just need it for school use. Should I trust this?

2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Built-in HD Webcam with Microphone
Includes power cables, and a few other adaptors. Rarely left my desk. No dings, dents or dead pixels. Perfect condition.

Look on ebay for similarly spec'ed Macbook Pros. $1000 seems high to me.

  • I had purchased a used 2009 Macbook PRo from my friend and I was wondering how I would go about restarting it to factory settings?

I really need to reset it to factory settings as it has all of her information on there.

Hopefully, your friend supplied you with the discs that originally came with the computer.
Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • How do i transfer pictures from icloud to my pc, i have done the back up but want to make sure the pictures are there before turning off icloud on my devices.

How do I transfer my pictures from icloud to my pc?

    Hello citcatprincess,
Importing the photos from iCloud is relatively easy. I would first take a look at the first article that will walk you through with making copies of your Photos as well as other data from iCloud if you need it. The one piece that you will need is iCloud for Windows so that way photos will sync up for you.
