If the phone is locked to a particular carrier only they can unlock it. You would have to contact Telstra and ask whether the phone is locked to them and if so whether they are willing to unlock it - they may not be. Apple can't do it for you.
If your phone is asking for your Apple ID does it do so by giving part of an Apple ID? Is the ID in question yours? Did you buy this phone new or second-hand? Please quote exactly any error messages you are getting. -

You may only need adapters for the different kind of sockets, depending of the country you want to travel. A voltage converter is not needed.
The Apple power units are multi voltage devices, supporting a range from 110 V to 240 V. as you can see on the labels. O.K. for most of the labels you need a magnifier, but its on them.

Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.

It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data. Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!

You can cancel an iCloud storage upgrade but only within 15 days of buying:

Will an iphone 4 that was originally purchased from apple directly as a factory unlocked phone remain unlocked or will it have now locked to the network it was used on. I've been told by carphone warehouse that the iphone will lock to first sim used in it (in this case Orange) and will need to be unlocked again. If you bought it directly from Apple as unlocked it should be unlocked for all networks. There are phones sold that WILL lock to the first carrier it is used with, but this does not apply to phones where the receipt says "unlocked".

So your friend could just add '+research' to the username part of your email address, and you setup a rule at icloud.com to put all emails sent to that address into a particular folder.
